Things Get Ugly Between Two Legends At Charity Event "Agassi/Sampras"
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 мар 2010
- Andre had expressed Pete's poor tipping in his tell all book "open" , so no need to reiterate on a CHARITY EVENT. The night was fun and great tennis was being played. Agassi was playing to the crowd a bit too mcuh in fact. He stole the crowd from everyother player. Maybe he cant handle being out of the spotlight. Pete decides to imitate Andre's famous walk to lighten the mood and to get some attention also. Andre doesnt like it. From that point on he gets personal and airs the dirty laundry. Pete takes offense and tries to nail Andre with a serve. This showed little class on both Andres, and Pete's Part. Pete could have easily talked about Andre throwing away 4 years of his life by doing drugs, but he takes the highroad, so he showed a bit more restraint. The Quality of tennis drops from that point, and the players seem to avoid hitting to Andre whenever possible. In the end, and in typical Sampras fashion, he finds a way to beat Agassi. Pete's book "A Champions Mind" is also available. The tennis channel rocks!

@2:56 when Roger and Rafa spontaneously react same way.... most awesome thing in tennis!!!!
This sums up the story:
The rivalry between the retired players is stronger than the current players
The point here is that Sampras had previously expressed disappointment at Agassi’s autobiography remarks, and had said he wanted to talk about it with Agassi man to man. This was a low blow and Agassi knew it. Pete’s impersonation was in the spirit of the event, Agassi’s wasn’t.
Sums up Agassi. He is low class, despite the nice guy act he puts on. With Pete, what you see is what you get.
I can’t find it on the internet (probably for a reason) but my dad said he remembers a time when Agassi said Sampras walked around like a monkey. Which could be a double edged remark at his posture and intelligence
That was too bad. Agassi's autobiography included some rather harsh and bitter comments about his love/hate relationship with tennis, with collateral disrespect toward former opponents.
On the debit side, he brought the bitter aspect to what was a charity event.
On the credit side, he eventually apologized for going too far here.
Being open can sometimes leads to being a little too open.
@@kextrzit was a great book though
@jlobiafra My GF worked for the main sponsor of the Cincinnati ATP event years ago. She got to play in the pro am and have dinner and hang out with some of the players. They all dished on Sampras not only being a cheap ass, but he refused to do things as simple as donating racquets (that he obviously didn't even pay for to begin with) for charity auctions. That was his character. Maybe he's changed, I dunno. But I don't think Aggasi went too far.
if you've read Andre's book, you know how much he despises Sampras. These guys never should have been out on the court together like this, it was a recipe for disaster.
I have read Agassi's book, and dress it up how he likes, it's obvious to me that he's just plain jealous of Sampras. There's nothing to despise abt Sampras. If he's tight with money, there are far worse faults to despise someone for. Like hypocrisy, for example - Agassi, the born again Christian who swore and spat at umpires, then lied about it, and bad mouthed a player simply because that player was better than him. He was not above gamesmanship either, whereas Sampras always played fair and square.
@@michelez715 Agassi just dont know how prank, that why he said that about Sampras being cheap, which is also true by the way, he is cheap lmao

@@thisishiphop1990 Andre doesn’t have good humor. In their younger years Agassi basically called Pete a monkey, which was probably meant as a jab at his posture but also towards his intelligence

I was there sitting directly behind Rafa's box. Crazy night. The vibe was really weird to see the least. The funny thing now that I watch this video, is that the game ended in vintage Sampras style. All of the drama, weirdness, intensity, etc.....all ended with one thing: Sampras winning the game and coming out on top. This is what defined him. I loved watching Agassi more than Sampras throughout most of the years, but Sampras always let his racquet and results do the talking. This is the best defense one can have. They let their results to the talking, and NO ONE can argue about results. Results are results, and Sampras was right up there with the best of them, ever.
Well, that makes one.

Both very different people / personalities. Andre was trained from the time he was born to play tennis. It wasn't his choice. I remember him hating it as a child. Pete wanted to play, more serious, and also a health problem. They both worked hard, but Andre had more fun once the fame came, while Pete was always focused. Both great players. But this was definitely uncomfortable to watch. Andre was rude, but Pete did start it. Not sure if the pigeon toe was as hurtful and embarrassing and calling someone cheap. Neither was very funny. A lot they do for entertainment in these celebrity matches, but it just wasn't funny. Sad. :( People want to see their heroes after the rivalry grow up and be professional in public and get along.
I think pete was just trying to be entertaining and all. Coz imitating a player at a charity match is entertaining and supposed to be taken in good humour. Players do it all the time, take for instance djokovic. And it's really funny too. I dont know why agassi had to get personal and cause unnecessary tension. Loved federer though, he tried his best to diffuse the tension.

i was there at this match, sitting right behind Nadal's camp. When Sampras tried to bean Agassi with the serve, Nadal looked over at his camp and gestured with his fingers, "one inch". His English wasn't that great at this time, but he understood what was going on. The highlight for me was this moment though, when Rafa looked over at his camp with that "what the hell is going on" look on his face.
Could he not have been joking saying ‘oh it was this close to being in’. If his English was bad I doubt he’d even know they were half fighting. Even a lot of the crowd didn’t seem to pick up on it...

im not agreeing with anybody here, just to say olympics is also important not the most important its true but it allows you to have the career golden slam. this is its only purpose because people forgets about olympics.

Gustavo Kuerten, Monica Seles, Lindsay Davenport, and the Williams sisters look forward to it enthusiastically, but opting to skip this Olympics are many of tennis's other big stars, including Pete Sampras, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Mary Pierce, and rising star Jan-Michael Gambill."

Agassi is classless. The walk imitation by Sampras was funny but why did Agassi have to make it personal? No doubt he despises Sampras
All of it was without class, obviously Agassi was hurt by Sampras his comment. In his anger and trying to get even he stepped over the line, but Agassi was provoked first intended or not. When angry people react in ways they should not and will later regret.
To bad Sampras and Agassi had to ruin the moment together,
this kind of tension is not what you expect at this type of event.
Yeah i agree. Coz agassi won most of his titles in the 2000s when pete was out of the way. In the 90s, sampras was untouchable. Agassi was great too but sampras was on another level. So maybe it was that long standing envy on agassi's part that led to this unnecessary tension.
RoadRage in charity matches, light fun making is common. Thats why it is been called exhibition matches. In this case agassi was trying to mock everyone from the beginning onwards. I guess this is the first time sampras mocked him, and agassi take it too far.
No reason to get your panties in a wad. They're great friends. Sometimes jokes don't land. Aggasi acknowledges he went too far. Don't make more out of it than it is.

tipping is voluntary and i dont see why you always have to give 15% to 20% on every meal. valet driving is even worse. it's valet's job to park the car. If you are in the mood to give them a few dollar, that's fine. But i dont see why you have to make it a requirement.
Tip in France and they'll snort at you and walk off. It's a practice to allow employers to underpay their staff below the minimum wage (in certain countries/industries).
Correct take.
the difference between the two was that sampras was 1) trying to be funny and 2) doing a "trait" that EVERYONE the public knows is synonymous with agassi his walk.. agassi however decided to divulge TO EVERYONE in the crowd something personal and private and NOT KNOWN sampras's alleged cheapness? THAT IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE! agassi wasn't trying to be funny he was trying to be rude and mean!..AGASSI IS AND WAS WRONG!.....
I'm not saying it was ok that What Agassi said was ok (it wasn't), but Sampras isn't exactly scot-free either. Most people who know of Agassi know of his severe back issues that cause him agonizing pain on a daily basis. I think it was a pretty low blow to make that pain fresh again. Again, Agassi said something that was uncalled for and that's not ok, but Sampras struck a nerve there and led to that whole conversation. (He does hate the game, he and Steffi-his wife-won't have their kids play tennis).
so agassi's "duck walk" was because of his bad back? he ALWAYS walked like this even when he first hit the tour...
Thomas Schmitz, he has had the back problems his whole life.
Oh please. So he exposed his bad tipping.... big fvckin deal lol
DarkShadow You cant have a serious enough back problem that prevents you from walking properly AND play tennis well enough to win grand slams. Stupidity. Everyone has a characteristic walk. That was Agassi's. Nothing to do with his back.
Yeah, I never really liked Sampras....Too boring and serious. But in this case Agassi was in the wrong. Sampras was FINALLY loosening up for once and did a cute little Agassi impression. Agassi was way out of line with the bad tipper stuff.
Why is it any worse than mocking someone for the way they walk? I think I'd rather be called a bad tipper actually.

I remember the first time I saw this I was kind of on Agassi's side because Pete started it. But now that I watch it again I see that it was kind of getting boring and Pete just wanted to do a silly imitation. They ALWAYS imitate each other at these events. He even said "Okay Andre, I'm going to joke around a little bit, I'm going to imitate you". So that it would be completely clear it was just a joke. And it was really nothing offensive. It's just a characteristic walk. Then Agassi really, really, hits below the belt. It's weird in itself that he brings something up that he only talked about in his autobiography, very weird. If he couldn't think of any comeback, he could have just said so and they could've laughed it off.
Silly to you, but how do you know someone how is pigeon-toed their whole life doesn't take offense to that? Maybe it's a sensitive thing for Agassi too? Maybe he was bullied for it? Who knows. Either way, it was making fun of Agassi, so Agassi came back at him. It was a news story, it was a joke in the tennis circles at the time, everyone knew about it. He just turned his pockets out and said wait I have a dollar. It wasn't anything THAT sinister. Not that much worse than making fun of a physical characteristic.
@@jackbronson4242 I think you're wayyyyyy off. You can hear it clearly in the crowd. Sampras did exactly what was expected of him. Exactly what former players are contractually brought there to do: Silly personable jokes and tennis imitations, that insult no one, and really just remind everyone of the things they used to love about watching iconic former players. It's part of what made this charity events what they are. Even the commentator said in response: "I miss that pigeon-toed walk!" The crowd and everyone involved were all cheering along and enjoying the pantomime schtick... cheering it as much in support of Agassi as of Sampras' imitation... and waiting for Agassi to do something silly and similarly inoffensive. But Agassi, for some reason, misread the room. And instead, he basically brought up something personal that certain people (round Agassi) apparently used to secretly and bitchily say BEHIND the back of another player in REAL LIFE... Implying: Other players didn't like you. You really are a disliked as a person. They think you, as a person, are a self-involved, multi-millionaire, who doesn't give a cr*p about anyone and wouldn't spend a dollar on anyone else. That's not what the crowd came to see! And the crowd changed tone, the game changed tone, everything changed tone... right after he started insisting on it... and not even backing off at all and saying... "I'm just kidding." Instead, he doubled down on it, again and again, saying that its not even a secret, everyone KNOWS that ABOUT him. That isn't funny on-court messing-about for the sake of a bit of fun... that's just trying to be rude and cruel and publicly humiliate someone. I was an Agassi fan back in the day, not a Sampras fan AT ALL. That won't change just because of something this silly. But I wouldn't say Agassi comes away from this exchange looking good.

The best part is how good his imitation of Agassi was, like he’d been practicing for this moment, fucking lolll
Pete took it to heart, should have just ignored Agassi and carried on doing the pigeon walk
he got personal ... that's why.
+Mohammed Huzaifa
really i mean really
+Mohammed Huzaifa everyone knows it, really.
There is no hate between Roger and Rafa. Anyone who says there is has no appreciation for the game or for the two great men that make it so remarkable.
I've done valet and trust me, you know who is going to tip before you even take the keys.
This video makes me love fed and Nadal rivalry even more
This is not funny, it's awkward.
Thanks for clearing that up for us
RICK ROSS
You're welcome. Any time in doubt...write me
Jetpack 😂😂😂👌🏼
It’s both
I agree it’s BOTH
The serve at Agassi was brilliant.
Awesome video!
I miss when Pete and Andre ruled the game. The big booming serve and volley Pete against the best returner in the game.
Yeah just like baseball whereas the pitcher is the server. Pitching well always beats hitting well. Sampras head to head both in prime spanks Agassi and gets better looking wife by far too.
@@jjoneski2203 In Agassi's book, he gives Sampras his due. It was Becker who Agassi couldn't stand
I love how philosophic and deep-minded Agassi is in interviews, etc...and here he's anything but.
One is the act Agassi puts on, this match was the real Agassi. He's never been able to get over the fact that Sampras was the better player.
I think Sampras was expecting an court impersonation, and got miffed at Agassi smart ass act
I’m sorry but you guys are far too sensitive, this is hilarious 😂
I think it was pretty awkward for Rafa and Federer.. Fed tried to defuse the situation but didn’t have much luck lol
Pete was just being just casual and everyone was enjoying, but Agassi did get personal.
Yeah, but only because Sampras force him into it by saying, "I'm waiting for you to do something". Andre didn't have anything but that
Pete made it personal. I guess he has nothing else to do.
That was so awkward lol
I applaud Pete on the way he handled himself. It is funny how Andre was making fun of people but when it came time for the kidding to be on him he could not take it.He is a sorry sport.I have no respect for Andre now.Andre came back with a knife to dig into Sampras but it totally backfired.
Agassi really showed his lack of class here.....
George Donaldson ??? Lol Sampras was begging for a comeback. The truth hurts
Agassi couldn't think of anything witty or funny to say so he had to get nasty.
vampurile
I've never been an Agassi fan.
I was once, but I haven't been for a really long time. Not after he questioned Federer's skill back in 05 before he retired. Just came off as a sour old prick.

He was a good player but a rather unpleasant guy.
This kind of shows how wrong Boris is about wanting players to be more honest and open if they don't like each other. It's just unnecessary and classless. I much prefer Rog and Rafa's generation who keep it civil with their rivals
You're soft and weak.
Like Nick Kyrgios, you mean?
@@sageantone7291 nah he just prefers class and role models like Agassi has a bigger mouth than nadal but nadal isn’t stronger mentally than Agassi and better in every way
In other news: Federer and Nadal reacted the same way, at the same time
Federer > Nadal > Sampras > Agassi
..."Wait!..l've got a dollar!!" LOL!!!
Lmao they were both funny 😂
