Things Get Ugly Between Two Legends At Charity Event "Agassi/Sampras"

  • Andre had expressed Pete's poor tipping in his tell all book "open" , so no need to reiterate on a CHARITY EVENT. The night was fun and great tennis was being played. Agassi was playing to the crowd a bit too mcuh in fact. He stole the crowd from everyother player. Maybe he cant handle being out of the spotlight. Pete decides to imitate Andre's famous walk to lighten the mood and to get some attention also. Andre doesnt like it. From that point on he gets personal and airs the dirty laundry. Pete takes offense and tries to nail Andre with a serve. This showed little class on both Andres, and Pete's Part. Pete could have easily talked about Andre throwing away 4 years of his life by doing drugs, but he takes the highroad, so he showed a bit more restraint. The Quality of tennis drops from that point, and the players seem to avoid hitting to Andre whenever possible. In the end, and in typical Sampras fashion, he finds a way to beat Agassi. Pete's book "A Champions Mind" is also available. The tennis channel rocks!

      I have read Agassi's book, and dress it up how he likes, it's obvious to me that he's just plain jealous of Sampras. There's nothing to despise abt Sampras. If he's tight with money, there are far worse faults to despise someone for. Like hypocrisy, for example - Agassi, the born again Christian who swore and spat at umpires, then lied about it, and bad mouthed a player simply because that player was better than him. He was not above gamesmanship either, whereas Sampras always played fair and square.

    I was there sitting directly behind Rafa's box. Crazy night. The vibe was really weird to see the least. The funny thing now that I watch this video, is that the game ended in vintage Sampras style. All of the drama, weirdness, intensity, etc.....all ended with one thing: Sampras winning the game and coming out on top. This is what defined him. I loved watching Agassi more than Sampras throughout most of the years, but Sampras always let his racquet and results do the talking. This is the best defense one can have. They let their results to the talking, and NO ONE can argue about results. Results are results, and Sampras was right up there with the best of them, ever.

Pete wanted to play, more serious, and also a health problem. They both worked hard, but Andre had more fun once the fame came, while Pete was always focused. Both great players. But this was definitely uncomfortable to watch. Andre was rude, but Pete did start it. Not sure if the pigeon toe was as hurtful and embarrassing and calling someone cheap. Neither was very funny. A lot they do for entertainment in these celebrity matches, but it just wasn't funny. Sad. :( People want to see their heroes after the rivalry grow up and be professional in public and get along.

Most people who know of Agassi know of his severe back issues that cause him agonizing pain on a daily basis. I think it was a pretty low blow to make that pain fresh again. Again, Agassi said something that was uncalled for and that's not ok, but Sampras struck a nerve there and led to that whole conversation. I remember the first time I saw this I was kind of on Agassi's side because Pete started it. But now that I watch it again I see that it was kind of getting boring and Pete just wanted to do a silly imitation. They ALWAYS imitate each other at these events. He even said "Okay Andre, I'm going to joke around a little bit, I'm going to imitate you". So that it would be completely clear it was just a joke. And it was really nothing offensive. It's just a characteristic walk. Then Agassi really, really, hits below the belt. It's weird in itself that he brings something up that he only talked about in his autobiography, very weird. If he couldn't think of any comeback, he could have just said so and they could've laughed it off.

    • @jackbronson4242

      Silly to you, but how do you know someone how is pigeon-toed their whole life doesn't take offense to that? Maybe it's a sensitive thing for Agassi too? Maybe he was bullied for it? Who knows. Either way, it was making fun of Agassi, so Agassi came back at him. It was a news story, it was a joke in the tennis circles at the time, everyone knew about it. He just turned his pockets out and said wait I have a dollar. It wasn't anything THAT sinister. Not that much worse than making fun of a physical characteristic.

    • @Hic_Rhodus
      @Hic_Rhodus 3 года назад +32

      @@jackbronson4242 I think you're wayyyyyy off. You can hear it clearly in the crowd. Sampras did exactly what was expected of him. Exactly what former players are contractually brought there to do: Silly personable jokes and tennis imitations, that insult no one, and really just remind everyone of the things they used to love about watching iconic former players. It's part of what made this charity events what they are. Even the commentator said in response: "I miss that pigeon-toed walk!" The crowd and everyone involved were all cheering along and enjoying the pantomime schtick... cheering it as much in support of Agassi as of Sampras' imitation... and waiting for Agassi to do something silly and similarly inoffensive. But Agassi, for some reason, misread the room. And instead, he basically brought up something personal that certain people (round Agassi) apparently used to secretly and bitchily say BEHIND the back of another player in REAL LIFE... Implying: Other players didn't like you. You really are a disliked as a person. They think you, as a person, are a self-involved, multi-millionaire, who doesn't give a cr*p about anyone and wouldn't spend a dollar on anyone else. That's not what the crowd came to see! And the crowd changed tone, the game changed tone, everything changed tone... right after he started insisting on it... and not even backing off at all and saying... "I'm just kidding." Instead, he doubled down on it, again and again, saying that its not even a secret, everyone KNOWS that ABOUT him. That isn't funny on-court messing-about for the sake of a bit of fun... that's just trying to be rude and cruel and publicly humiliate someone. I was an Agassi fan back in the day, not a Sampras fan AT ALL. That won't change just because of something this silly. But I wouldn't say Agassi comes away from this exchange looking good.

    Yeah, I never really liked Sampras....Too boring and serious. But in this case Agassi was in the wrong. Sampras was FINALLY loosening up for once and did a cute little Agassi impression. Agassi was way out of line with the bad tipper stuff.

    It's true about Sampras being a bad tipper. I moved to Tampa in the late 1990's and was talking to a driver for Dominos after ordering my pizza. Sampras lived in this ritzy golf community a few miles away. The driver said he got a dollar tip for a 27 dollar order from Sampras.

    The whole match it seemed that Agassi was trying way to hard to make jokes and make everyone laugh. It wasn't that funny. Sampras was always serious and all but when he imitated Agassi (completely fine as it's a known fact that he walks like that) he took it way too seriously. Calling him out on his tipping is awful, but seriously he's lucky Pete didn't call him out on a failed marriage, drug abuse, and countless other things, because Pete has class. That's why he'll always be the greatest American tennis player of all time, and not Agassi

      Perhaps Agassi shd check his own faults, before criticising anyone else. The man who wore hair pieces for years is one of the biggest hypocrites out there, the born again Christian who swore, lied, and disliked Sampras for simply being a better player than he was. Sampras may not be a good tipper, but he has a better character, and more class than Agassi ever will.
