L'enfant et les sortilèges Fantaisie Lyrique en deux parties Ballet version by Jiri Kylian and the Nederlands Dans Theater, Orchestra national de Paris - Lorin Maazel
What happens when a masterpiece is enhanced further by fantastically imaginative decor & choreography....? Pure magic! What a gorgeously unstoppably watchable & listenable feast.
thanks for posting the whole series!! It was fun to see the face of my husband who danced this ballet! (Jean Louis Cabané)! Also the costumes (John McFarlane) are an absolute joy! you've made my day! Rick
My favourite opera and ballet performance to date. I'm absolutely in love with the story. I've always been a fan of M. Ravel's work but as an artist, this whole piece (the music, story, choreography, costumes, scenery etc) has a very special appeal to me.
We just watched this in my French Impressionism music class. I always laugh when the teapot goes "I box you" and the teacup starts singing in fake Chinese. Thanks so much for posting!!
A fantastic performance, musically speaking - the singers show true character, and the rhythm and synchronicity of the singers and orchestra is almost impeccable throughout. But Kylian's choreography and the dancers! Such a genuine and captivating interpretation of Ravel's masterful and almost kaleidoscopic music, nearly everything in the music has a simultaneous representation in movement. I'm sure Ravel would be fascinated and delighted! The only fault I can think of is how there is no sign of the mother (not even a window with the lights coming up or some such) when the animals are calling for her near the end, and her theme returns in full force - but this is a minor fault in an otherwise wonderful whole.
This is a joy! My first was Hockney at the Met in 1980 as a kid. One of the most memorable musical events of my life! I'm in search of a video of Balanchine's 1981 made-for-TV PBS "Dance in America" version from the New York City Ballet. I had/have a video of it somewhere but can't find it! It was co-produced by Balanchine with one of Jim Henson's co-Muppeteers, and it's magnificent. Someone out there must have an old VHS of it.......
A fabulous recording - The ballet really adds character to the music ( and this is from someone who really does not like ballet that much) Likewise, as oboeshawn says above - that is an incredibly hard oboe duet at the beginning. If one doesnt double breathe, I dont know how it could be achieved. The Glybourne 1987 performance does it by discrete breaths, but that, whilst sill an amazing performance, changes the whole opening effect.
I heard 2:07 and the first thing I thought to myself was "DUDE! I GOTTA SAMPLE THIS IN A BEAT! IT WOULD BE SO SICK!" Man.... I still love that so much.
It is supposed to represent the magical world of a child: the story is about this: a very unkind boy refuses to do his homework and decides, very angry to broke everything. To get rid of him, objects and animals decide to scare him
Mon dieu c'est larithmétique ; tique tique tique tique tique tique ^^ mi-li-metre cen-ti-metre deci-metre deca-metre ^^ J'apprend ste musique en musique au bahut ^^
It's about a rude child who gets scolded by his mother then goes about throwing a tantrum and destroying stuff in the room. Then the stuff comes to life...........and eats his soul (j/k).
It's also about World WarcOne, when our pettiness and obstinance destroyed all the enchantment and beauty around us. Colette and Ravel heard so many wounded soldiers around them crying for their mothers.. It's not coincidence, they wrote about it. It's a child's tale, but it's so much deeper and darker. It's the music that makes it digestible, even today

Gracias, merci, thanks!!!!!!!!!1

Say what you will! I have no clue what this ballet is about? Dancing clocks, chairs ;-) It's interesting, the music is awesome.
The best version i've ever seen.Who is the choreographer? Cet homme (femme?) a parfaitement rendu la poésie de cette oeuvre.Livret de Colette.
