Bravo. C'est bien de faire découvrir à vos enfants ce genre de musique. La musique classique, baroque entres autres et sa complexité éduque l'oreille et ouvre aux autres genres musicaux pour après. Commencer ma vie musicale par le piano à 6 ans et un répertoire classique m'ont permis de maintenant apprécier et aimer le blues, le rock, hard rock, metal, rythm'n'blues, reggae, la funk, le blue grass, la musique électro, le rock progressif etc........
n'oubliez pas les "variations pour une porte et un soupir" de P.Henry ! Mais surtout, n'oubliez pas le verrouillage centralisé des portières si vous projetez de perfectionner leur éducation musicale en partant en vacances :)

I stumbled upon this clip 4 days ago, and have been listening to it more than 20 times each day since then. I LOVE the joyous energy of their performance, and the music is absolutely fantastic aswell. One of the internet's golden nuggets for sure.
This is exactly the effect it had on me, some time ago. I eventually bought the DVD. 'Les Sauvages' was extremely popular at its time and William Christie, the conductor of this staging said, that in most performances thr audirnce was on their seats clapping hands, singing and dancing. In the opera :)

I had to watch this twice to fully comprehend this. Singing AND dancing? I have to watch more of this period. This is absolutely wonderful. This is like going back in time 300 years, but better production values! (I came here by way of Rameau's l'égyptienne, also something I never heard before, but got transfixed with).
I don't think Rameau could have envisaged this, but I love it! Camp, crafty and mischievous - has a hypnotic quality, I feel compelled to go back and watch again.
Rameau wrote such beautiful music. Around the middle of the century, in the Carribean island of Dominica, a group of French immigrants were having a party, to which a number of natives were present. Rameau's "Les Sauvages" was played, and immediately roused the enthusiasm of the natives, who started dancing in their own fashion to the tune, and danced themselved to exhaustion. Rameau was informed of his success, which he found the most flattering because it was sincere and pure.
There's a little more to the story. Years previously some American chiefs had travelled to Paris and sang/danced some of their traditional music. Rameau witnessed this and incorporated the themes into his fourth act of Les Indes Galantes. When the work travelled back across the pond the natives recognized their tune.

Cette pièce fait honneur à cette belle symbiose que nous vivions en Amérique du Nord de l’époque du Roy Soleil et ce jusqu’à la fin du XIXe siècle.

What seems ridiculous to us is a paraphrase of how people tried to imagine foreign peoples centuries ago. This idea was full of fantasy with no understanding of nations and therefore so far from reality. At that time the purpose was to show how the "civilized" countries differed from "others". The choreography and the costumes correspond to such a vision. Funny but wonderful.

What I find a stroke of genius is that Ramaux managed to arrange a simple 2 part keyboard piece in a version for 2 soloysts, 4 voice choir and orchestra. Il faut le faire !

How quaint! This is surely the strangest bit of Ballet/Opera I have ever seen. It starts with a bunch of Pokemons dancing to Rameau's music. Then some Indians come in and do the Chicken Dance. Then the Indian Prince and Princess start walking like Egyptians.

A most marvellous performance. Years ago, I watched a band of Native Americans perform songs but unfortunately, these were rather modern, merely 'inspired' by their tribe's older culture. Then the lead singer nonchalantly showed some graciously light footed footwork. He probably wasn't aware that those few dance steps made a far bigger impression on the crowd than the band's singing. They should have redone the show and focused on their dancing! And of course, traditionally, the different tribes had to be able to sneak their scouts and hunters close to their unsuspecting prey.
I purchased Mr. Christie's recording of Les Indes Galantes on Harmonia Mundi almost 20 years ago. This is absolutely fantastic to have the visual experience. Thank you.

I think the hypnotic quality comes also from the music itself. It is made up of the continuous repetition of one musical motif and rhythm.

This is one of my favourite pieces of music, along with Handel’s Sarabande from this period. The dance Is fantastic. The two singers with pipes in their mouths. This is just brilliant.

They later danced three kinds of dances in the Théâtre-Italien , inspiring Rameau to compose his rondeau Les Sauvages.[1]

This is surely the strangest bit of Ballet/Opera I have ever seen. It starts with a bunch of Pokemons dancing to Rameau's music. Then some Indians come in and do the Chicken Dance. Then the Indian Prince and Princess start walking like Egyptians.

Porter un tel jugement démontre le peu de connaissance que vous avez de cette époque, celle de JP Rameau. On ne peut pas avoir le regard du 21ième siècle pour une oeuvre écrite au début du 18ième. Cela dit, vous avez raison. On n'est pas obligé de se comporter comme un idiot parce qu'un metteur en scène stupide à fait de ce passage non pas une danse sauvage mais stupide ce que n'ont jamais été les "Sauvages".

Years ago, I watched a band of Native Americans perform songs but unfortunately, these were rather modern, merely 'inspired' by their tribe's older culture.
Then the lead singer nonchalantly showed some graciously light footed footwork. He probably wasn't aware that those few dance steps made a far bigger impression on the crowd than the band's singing. They should have redone the show and focused on their dancing!
And of course, traditionally, the different tribes had to be able to sneak their scouts and hunters close to their unsuspecting prey.
