Wow...I've heard this piece many times and it's always beautiful and shimmery. But the way she plays it, for the first time for me, it truly sounds like one, whole piece. She puts it together, weaves the melodic and rhythmic motives together in such a way that I feel like I'm truly hearing Ravel's piece for the first time. I think what it is is that she doesn't use too much rubato, nor does she ever rush; she sounds whimsical and purposeful at the same time. Not predictable, but understandable.
If there was a more recent recording of jeux d’eau from martha argerich in her prime I would rather listen to that, but since her playing is so much more advanced than the rest of what’s out there on youtube i’ll forgive the static. Her playing transcends the technology of that time
One of the most fascinating aspects of this performance is how her hands appear to behave as fishes in a small pond on a Sunny afternoon. The absence of emotion as she plays belies the waterplay she is experiencing in her extraordinary mind. At the end, she quietly disconnects from her inner universe to rejoin ours like one looking up from the page of a book. I have been to the place she went. I bet you have, too .

Watching her hands snap into position is just incredible, she makes it look so effortless. I also really enjoy her unique interpretations, especially with this piece, very interesting and expressive variances in tempo. My teacher used to remind me of how Ravel was against pianists of his time taking liberties with his music, but I've always felt that there must be a medium struck between the composer's wishes and the identity of the interpreter, which I think Martha Argerich strikes brilliantly.
@@douwemusic You may already know this, but there’s a famous account of Vladimir Horowitz playing this exact piece for Ravel with many artistic liberties taken. After some light disagreement, Ravel eventually conceded that so long as Horowitz’s interpretation was sincere, he would accept the departures from the score that he took.

Heading on Ravel's manuscript: «Dieu fluvial riant de l'eau qui le chatouille» ("River god laughing at the water that tickles him") - Henri de Régnier. Martha grasped it!!!
It’s interesting that her posture almost looks “hunched” here but it seems that she’s using her core to support her body weight so that her shoulders/arms/wrists and hands can sort of dangle there and be totally relaxed... creating the fluid sound and look of her playing.
Something about the look on her face when she finished really charmed me. I wonder what she was thinking? "That was perfection!" Martha Argerich is one of my all time favorite pianists.
My favorite version of this piece, it just takes you to a distant place. And it shows you, that no matter how difficult a piece is you dont have to be moving around like a clown and it still sounds beautiful. it actually sounds better...
I endlessly wander around RUclips, trailing through the thousands of beautiful and breathtaking piano compositions that people have (kindly) uploaded... Rachmaninov. Liszt. Chopin... Such greats. But I always end up here... Ravel was a genius...
Really nice. I can see the water flowing in my mind. I've discovered the name of this track in the romance manga "This boy in class" chapter 26 when the MC played it for her classmate who is a good swimmer and her crush.
Possibly the best playing I have ever heard in my life...she looks so casual playing, perhaps if she was a bit flamboyant like the men who make a big flourish rising hands off the keys, with tossled hair their face, perhaps more people would write compliments..also, hard to believe this video is 38 years old.....is she retired now, or something?
Quel bonheur !
Why am I so fond of this performance from Argerich? I've watched about fifteen pianist's takes on this, such a range of approaches. The performance I would contrast this with is that of Richter. In my humble opinion he is overly strict in denying rubato, and he takes the most rapid tempo of anyone. Argerich becomes one with the instrument, and she brings languid beauty to this 'laughing water god'. Richter hunches over the keyboard like a demanding task-master, not missing a single note. It's an amazing feat but I cannot love that performance. I do love this one from Argerich. I also appreciate the justifiably proud smile that dances across her face after the final notes!
The quick beginning, sound almost magical but the way she plays it is in humane, the notes seems so light and played with perfection. Very busy piece with notes ranging mainly of higher tones writhing the melody
I think Archerich is the best performer of this song. Her performance was such a beautiful sound that, as the title suggests, the water is playing a travesty on the piano. She's a really great performer.
