Review: Durafly Tundra from HobbyKing. part 1

- HobbyKing is making big claims for the Tundra STOL RC plane and in part 1 of this review I look at what you get for your money and how well it goes together. Unfortunately, because I fly from a (seldom used) full-sized airfield, I couldn't do the flight test today because nobody was available to act as spotter/observer for me so watch for part 2 of the review to see how it flies.
From all appearances and from a design perspective, this thing should live up to the claims made for it. I can't wait to get it in the air.

I really like your reviews. You don't just outline thing we already know like other channels, you actually tell us necessary information which we may need to know if we were to buy the plane. Thanks!
Thanks for your great review. I'm just building one of these using a stabilised Frsky S8R Rx. If I fly in stabilised mode does this mean I don't need to add an elevator mix when using the flaps ?
Wheels are molded from black foam BTW, not painted ;)
+HobbyKing Live Good to know! Damn, nobody at the airfield (aside from me) again today and I'm busting to fly this thing!
+xjet If you want to protect the wheels just wrap a few turns of electrical tape around them .I've done that on my MPX FunCub a couple of years ago and they're still as new! ;)
+Pedro Costa I used a bicycle tube cut and stretched over the wheels for concrete landings. Hit glue the edges- works great!
+7demo7 That's a way to do it, although I think it's overkill. ;)
I love your videos, you do a great job.
I always find it to stay entertain even if the topic has nothing to do to what I'm doing, just feel like I can always learn something new.
a big thanks
LOL...loved the comical exit stage left :p I watch your videos as much for the entertainment value, as loads of good info. Thanks and keep up the good work! Looking forward to the review on the Turnigy Graphene batteries.
Do you still have a plane with nitro engine like the trainer with MDS 60 engine?
Excellent. I look forward to seeing part 2 and your final thoughts. I have mine but sadly work has been so busy I've not had time to set it up. Maybe I will do it after I finish watching this. I will take your tips in hand and implement them.
ahaaa! I see a horus in the background !! ... looking forward to your surgical review on this new radio ! This channel is Number 1 by far ! Awesome job Bruce. thanks for your energy & passion too .
Do you have any intension to review the QAV210? Im just waiting on parts for mine from hobbyking witch ended up getting lost in transit :(
+Tom Not at the moment... I've already got a large backlog of miniquads to review and I'm also trying to squeeze in as many fixed-wing reviews as I can while the weather holds.
Is that a Horus I see on the desk.
want one, extremal antenna + ground station == flying from the comfort of the back seat of the car
was thinking of getting a multiplex funcub in the summer. not sure now :/
could you put a soft RC crawler wheel on it instead of what it comes with. if yes which crawler will would you suggest? and phone insert or not yes or no?
+Juno Mac RC Real rubber that size can be pretty heavy and weight is a killer for STOL flying but I guess truck/crawler wheels are an option -- but be warned that the wire (which becomes the axle) for the undercarriage is pretty thin so you'd also need a bushing so that it all fitted together properly.
8:36 I use glued back to back sandpaper with a proper sized hole for the prop shaft between the propeller and adapter. Seems to work fine for me.
+lasersbee i used one layer of electrical tape on the backside of the propeller, worked as well. It build up enough friction so i could easily tighten the nut while holding the prop.
Good that you still remember about FMS SuperEZ, I am still waiting for part I to build mine, Do you still have plan to upload it?
Thanks,
+Vishal Kapoor Yes, it will be up this week.
+xjet Yipeeeeee . . . !
Loved the review, thanks Bruce. Do you honestly expect us to believe that those tires never left the grass!
can the spotter be a remote observer , looking trough a 360 head tracker camera ?
+Jahroen Sadly, no they can't. It also doesn't matter that you can hear an aircraft coming a *long* time before you can actually see it and when flying a small electric model, the sound of the prop and motor doesn't mask the noise of an approaching aircraft in the least. Rules are rules and must be obeyed regardless of their efficacy.
Great review. Thanks for bringing loads of data. The hard wheels may have pushed me towards the Timber.
Everytime I fly I break a prop or at least chip it. Been flying less than a year. Really looking at getting on of these. Thank you for this review.
Do want to see test flight review. Just ordered one myself should be in in a couple wks. Possibly could your talk about what to expect when using the flaps as that I've never used flaps in the past. And thanks Bruce for your opinion.
+Todd Howitt I did a video on how flaps work and how different types of aircraft usually respond to flaps so if you have a hunt you should be able to find it. Generally speaking, high-winged aircraft like the Tundra will pitch-up when modest to medium levels of flap are used but with the barndoor type, all bets are off once you get past a certain angle.
+xjet I'll do that do a search . Thanks
I wish you talked about the easy connections on the wings that just join together... What do you think about this and should other models have it as well?
+우희도 I'm of two minds. Yes, it does make easy connection if you have to fit and refit the wings for transport -- but then again, you have to fit and undo the struts every time which is a negative point so when comparing to some other models (such as the FMS trainer with its one-piece wing), it's still a slower model to put together and pull down. However, at 1.3m it's probably small enough to fit in most cars without the need to pull the wings off anyway.
Thanks!
Nice Bruce. Always enjoy your reveiws. A question, do you fly any helis? Would be intresting with some reveiws on helis. There Are near to none on youtube. Keep up the good work
You should add down elevator mixing coupled with the flaps. I needed about 30% to compensate for ballooning when the flaps are deployed.
Just a thought Bruce. The kit comes with a large foam rectangular block. This just happens to be the right width to fit in the battery hatch, so. Wrap the bottom and sides of the block in parcel tape, put a 2200 battery with the wire up on top of the block and draw around it, scoop it out till battery just fits. Push a knife straight through the bottom about 5 mm up side to side. Put in a battery strap. Cover with parcel tape around the side again. Pull ESC out to one side, Push foam block in, pull to the front of the plane and it will friction fit. push the ESC back down the side of the block, and instant battery tray. My CG was spot on :o)
+S700KY Nice idea. I just used velcro in the end but I do like your suggestion.
+xjet coming from you that means the World mate. Thank you 😃
I listened to a podcast with Stuart from hobbyking. He mentioned that it's ok to leave out the tail struts if you glue the tail in place. It's mainly there if you absolutely need to be able to remove the tail for transport.
He also said that the plane flies great with a high-C 1300 battery all the way to the front.
Just bought one yesterday and I hope its as good as all the reviews.....
Horus Horus Horus!!
We all want a review of it... We have saw this radio or banana sandwich (as you said) and we want some radio reviews or in your case sandwich reviews
+Ido Botnik :->
+xjet will we see the video coming in the next few days?
Like a lot of people i was pretty disturbed by the Horus on the bench behind you lol
This plane is really beautiful! A lot of people deeply enjoy it!
Great camera work, Bruce.
I've fitted a 5000mah 3s Multiplex FunCub, which us very similiar to this, and it flew great!
Excellent review as always Bruce, great idea to use a rubber band on the wheels.
Bruce, again, not a fan boi but you are WILDLY beneficial and for folks like me who need to be "shown" how to do stuff I, once again salute you for ALL you do! Please, oh please ignore the trolls who, bizarrely seek a perfection that does not exist! Now about that HORUS you scamp!!!
You better do a video on that FrSky Horus x12 back there sometime Bruce!
Non-tundra questionCould a person build a simple antenna tester to check SRW? I've noticed my video transmitter will get hotter depending on which antenna I put on. ( got my Ham but did'nt make me as smart as I'd hoped. )Love your stuff up here in Canada!!!!!!
+Daryl Jenken Building an SWR meter that works effectively (without in itself disrupting the SWR of a system) is not such a simple task at higher frequencies (such as 5.8GHz). I am aware of at least one DIY project out there on the Net so Google will be your friend.
Review on the Graphene Battery coming up soon?
+jedi22300 Yep... and it includes a shootout with some other popular options as well as a bit of "white board" stuff on battery theory.
***** Cool!
+xjet Be very interested on your take of the so called HV LiPo's Bruce
+xjet awesome
+jedi22300 It has exact same specs as the nano-techs, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.
Nice stuff Bruce! Beautiful looking plane
I was thinking the same thing as Beyondwrittenwords, I go straight to RCModel Reviews and see what Bruce has to say, it's a compliment to find you are relied upon for information, to suggest others provide the pictures is a bit like car reviewers giving a great description of the curves of the body and sound of the engine but not providing pictures and sound. No flight video at the end was such a let down. I watched the Horus video prior, didn't even turn it on, come on Bruce, you are normally way more interesting than that. Handy info on the Tundra but a few specific shots would have made it more interesting and useful.
anyone else notice the Sammy in the background lo. top review Bruce
BTW what was in your sandwich that was on the beach? I don't know why I want to know but I do.😕
I already have a Tundra assembled and ready to test fly but wind and rain on the days I've tried :(
I think the wheels will be OK. I also have a Multiplex Fun Cub which also has foam wheels and they've lasted a few years and 100s of take off/landings/touch and goes but I do tend to avoid the tarmac. My main reservation is the number of tiny screws needed to assemble the wings and struts at the field. I can get it fully assembled in my small hatch back (Mitsubishi Space Star) if I don't take too much else so I'll do that for the test flight. I do have a few ideas to make it easier.
Looking forward to see what you think, Bruce. I've set mine up with the throws as specified but I think I have the servos on less than maximum. It's so long since I set it up with my Taranis I forget :)
A tiny spur washer on each side of the prop bites quite well.
Nice review and nice t-shirt btw! :-)
My flaps were not aligned with each other, and one was being forced into the foam making a clicking noise... sooo uhh yah.
I Haven't bought a model for a while Bruce,this might be it.
I`ve just boarded a plane for NZ to help our neighbour in need, see you soon Bruce.
O my God! Horus X12S! Please review it!
Yea ok I want one!!!
That didn't take much hair pulling or arm twisting lol, good show as usual.
+NZToddy With the weather having turned to crap until the weekend, you might even be present for the maiden.
candy dropper optional? what :D
informative video. thanks. will buy one.
Thumbs up for the shot @ 12:09, well done
How about a review on that sandwich.
How about 2 Tundras side by side on Bruces patch .. oh yes the second one has a Candy dropper and Graupner GR18 on board.
!,!,,
Agree about the battery holder. So many models don't include a battery holder. Then if you don't make one, and the battery shifts you end up doing what AliShanMao did with his X8 and losing it in the drink.
Can you do us a review on your sandwich please Bruce getting a bit hungry watching it :)
+Breathe - RC Sadly, I ran out of time to eat my sandwich yesterday and I suspect that by the time I get back to the studio today it will be "sub-optimal" :-(
***** lol nothing wrong with curled up edges :)
Yeah, what's in the sandwich?
Great info as usual...
Hmmm. Is that a Horus radio on the shelf? ?_?
+Xuan Phu Vo I think you were just looking at the banana sandwich I made for my lunch. That was on the bench beside me.
+xjet My eyes are failing I guess. I hope you'll do a review of this sandwich soon :)
Here in UK on the instructions, the size of the screws is mentioned one way on the written part and on the photo is another . Fortunately the measurement on the photo correspond to the on the bag. But it is true ...lot of screws not a transport friendly one. Here we have an hurricane after the other ad mine will be maiden maybe next week end. Winter in UK go figure.... grrr
The bit at the end was great
+apo234 Thanks... but it's incredibly frustrating. Not a single (full-sized) aircraft anywhere to be seen all day but, because of the rules, I still couldn't fly :-(
When's part 2 if ?
+steve cotterell As soon as I can find someone to act as an observer for me. Unfortunately, the wife's away and everyone else works during the week so I'm on my own at the airfield most of the time :-(
Look forward to it Bruce enjoy the weather it's freezing in the UK at the moment
+xjet Lucky you!
Putting the prop on backwards was an oldish free flight trick to calm the thrust of an engine down. Maybe Bruce isn't old enough to remember those halcyon days before radio control!
+jgruppe27 Yes, I remember those days but I flew mainly diesel engines so reducing the power of the engine was simply easier -- open up the needle, turn down the compression and you'd get a diesel to run at *much* reduced power quite easily.
Everyone. Don't get too excited about the Horus. It is only a pre production sample. It still needs quite some work to bring it to market. Had one in my hot little hands for a week and I will be interested to compare what Bruce has to say about it compared with my own observations. PS Bruce check your Email queries @.....
Like it... but before dinging up the wheels spin the wheels and apply several coats of Shoo Goo thinned down with Toluene solvent making it thicker on the "tread"and you'll have light weight rubber tires with decent balance if it's EPP foam... but better test it first as Toluene straight softens EPO and causes the cells to expand and requires extra care working mixed ratios that needs a thin base coat to cure in the air FAST working up to the desired thickness in layers working fast. But how do you "exercise" EPO hinges? I tired by hand for 15 minutes with little improvement and now it's been a week flexing back a Cloud Surfer elevator with balsa wood brace to keep it straight applying constant pressure with a rubber band changing sides every 24 hours and very little difference... will take months to stretch out the outer layer of foam at the hinge line.
The Bixler 2 has hinges and so should everything to keep digital servos happy and cool. Give it a few more days but if it's not noticeably looser I'm cutting it off and using some proper HK hinges at 20 cents a pop... and mounting the control horn vertical on the hinge line so flaperon symmetry is maintained and that's a pain. I think they put the darn control horns set back from the hinge line to have more leverage fighting with the foam hinges and didn't mind that the top clevis holes tilt back even further from the hinge line. Computer radios need control surface top and bottom rotation degree symmetry to work....ERRR!
Great shirt
review the horus next time please. .....And the sandwich! thx
Bruce this video was made in 2016 right? Take care mate, that sandwich could have gone off by now! Safety Sally was here.
You, sir, are awesomely funny.
why do people wear t shirts with graphics on it?
i just dont, i wear plain t shirts and jackets, i cant imagine me walking through a busy place with some crazy graphics on me.
Amazing craft, & origin
What's for lunch Bruce?
Washout is what a meat pack gives you the option for. Yes very short take off and landings.
Love my Tundra haven't need to mod it at all control throws are enough out of the box FPV is good too just dont let a mate Fly it into a tree :( only broke the prop
peanut butter and banana?
Are you OK out there Bruce, I heard there was an earthquake.
+Barry Cole Yeah I hope Bruce is OK...
+Barry Cole Yeah, that was down at the other end of the country and no, the rumours are not true -- it wasn't triggered by one of my "landings" :-)
This plane flys so great on 4s 2700-3300 mah
Exit stage left...
foam wheels!?!
That's it? That's the end?? Oh come on man! I was ready to see it fly! What's all this spotter nonsense?
+nicfishn1 Those are the rules (regulations) here in New Zealand. We flew at this airfield (when there was much more full-sized air traffic) for many years without spotters/observers and there was never an incident. However, times change, as do the regulations. You can see why anyone flying a model at most airfields would need someone to keep an eye out for full-sized planes but the rules don't differentiate between all-but-deserted rural fields like this and busy metro fields with lots of planes coming and going. It's a shame but there's nothing we can do about it. It's a bit like the USA where, despite there having *never* been a single reported instance of a drone and a full-sized aircraft colliding, drone owners now have to be registered and all drones must carry their owners registration number. It seems that regulators like to fix problems that don't exist -- probably because it's much easier to do this than to fix the *real* problems.
Pure rubbish. I feel for ya. That's got to be absolutely frustrating. Nothing worse than seeing freedoms disappear - especially when they're tied to our greatest passions.
+1 on the Horus!!!!!
Shirt is wonderful
+pokies100 That's because "shirt happens" :-)
+xjet butt of the shirt hidden. Stand and deliver.
Your face is ok but wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of the actual plane and assembly
+BeyondWrittenWords There are quite a few detailed build videos on the Net already so I prefer to simply highlight the issues that those videos don't always mention. As it is, the video was getting pretty long :-(
+xjet - blah, I for one don't really watch any other RC review channel other than yours. There's other RC channels but you seem to give the most honest reviews especially when it comes to planes. In this video you did have several shots showing what you were talking about which is extremely helpful especially if it is a concept or idea that the viewer doesn't know or understand about. Although when you mentioned the ball joint tool I was like "what is that" and "show me". But I do agree a bit with BeyondWrittenWords and it would have been nice to see a bit more of your assembly and maybe some close up pictures of this and that. Keep up the good work and I loved the end of the video! Kinda thought you were going to just do some taxiing after you said no one was there to help 30 seconds earlier. :-)
Haha. Funny ending XD
I agree on the ball link pliers. I managed to put it together without them, but, owww! I did buy a set the next time I went by the hobby store.
can I just watch 1 vid without a commercial
i like how its a copy of the multiplex funcub...
What's in the sandwich?
Nice egg sandwich ;)
+Armchair Pilot Banana!
+xjet Try Brie and Banana - one of my favourites...... ;-)
Bugger the plane, lets look at the Frsky transmitter in the back ground. mmmm Transmitter porn.
Maybe the manual was trolling
Fowler flaps
Funny!
nnnnnoooooooooooooo not a part 2 lol
Am I the only one who was eyeing off his sandwich?
are you gonna eat that sandwich
Rules made by fools!
another one...
all talk and no flight.
what a dud review.
you could fly it first then i could miss out on the 13 minutes of blah blah !!!
What's in the sandwich?
