In this video I pulled a shifter assembly from a 1997 Volvo 960 sedan. This process should be the same for all Volvo 900 series cars built between 1992 through 1998.

Robert you are the best, third owner of a 97 965 in mint condition, 145k miles. You help me keep this baby fit. Today replacing the shift linkage bushing for that nice solid feel. Looked to see if you have any videos of it and sure enough you do! The part is about 69 cents BTW. So I was feeling generous and bought an extra one.
And BTW, this is the last of a level of car that is just no longer made. I have another newer Volvo and Mercedes too. But this Volvo RWD chassis was built to such a high standard. Smooth and solid, fantastic ride, supreme comfort. Such a shame that people dump these for reasons like the heater core (which I replaced and was not that bad at all). You cannot get cars like this anymore. It was designed as a million mile vehicle and it shows.
Fun fact--Volvo had no in house inline 6 and they needed one for this car, so they went to Porsche for assistance. Yes, this wagon has a Porsche-designed motor. Not many people are aware of that. Many people today jump on the 240 (which is a legend, of course), and overlook the 960. But I predict the 960 will reach classic sought after status in the near future.
Even though the 960 is my all time favorite car, I don't think they will get any better status than what they have now. When you can't get parts to fix them, it goes down hill from there.
Thanks for doing all of these videos. I've got a bunch of these 960/v90 platforms and its great to see people getting these usable parts back into circulation.

Almost got a Saab tha5 had a broken shifter knob. Was going to get it till I found out none of the dash electronics worked. Wasn't worth fixing as book value was only around 2500 fixed. She was a nice 9-5 though. Reliability issues with those sucked 😔

I have a 94 volvo 960 with a bad neutral safety switch and LITERALLY put in a auto shop hours before this video and would of save so much time tearing it apart can u do a video on one, mine is on the side of the trans right next to the exhaust and where can u get specific volvo 960 parts please

Hi Robert, thanks again for another excellent video. Question for you, I have a 1992 960 and I want to replace only the shift knob... all I do is pull it off? I pulled on it and it wont budge. I'm afraid of breaking something by pulling too hard. I found a nice wood trim knob from a 2000 S70 at the scrapyard that I want to use to match the rest of the wood trim in the car. Any suggestions? Is there a hidden set screw somewhere or something on the old shift knob you think?

Hi , do you think I can just disconnect the shift lock cable without taking the whole unit out ? My keys wont get out of ignition anymore becasue of this shift lock and teh shift lock button on bottom is broken .
Is the shifter release button on the knob all the way out?

In my volvo 850 1994, a 10 cents coin slipped and fell into the gear shifter area where the Gear knob goes to “L”. In that bottom area it just slid in. Is this going to cause any problem, can you please advise?
Also, I get belt noise when the car is cold started. It goes away when the car is warmed up and has ran a few miles and the sound goes away. I have seen this issue this winter. Any idea what it could be?
Edit: The timing belt on the car was changed 5 or 6 years ago
I don't think so.
I would pull the serpentine belt, if the noise continues, I'd be very worried. I'm not sure what was replaced with the timing belt or what quality parts were used.

It's not the serpentine belt issue that destroys the engine, timing belt parts.

This was a 960? And I wonder is the PNP-switch right under the skifter? So that I have to remove the shifter and change the PNP-switch from inside the car and not under it?

@@RobertDIY I have done that, You have a video on how to change PNP on a Volvo 850. But in a 960 it sits above the gearbox. So I wondered if the PNP switch should be changed from inside the car, under the shifter, or do we have to take the gearbox down to get acces to it. That is an awful much work I think

@@RobertDIY no my shifter is good. It's just the economy switch I'm needing where you can push the button to put it in winter mode. I don't know the name of it the buttons say E. S. And w.
