I just did this repair yesterday and while I definitely made some mistakes I followed your method and it worked like a charm. Personally it was difficult to get to the screws that hold the cable in so I dropped one side of the bracket down and did the repair and used the factory tire iron to get it back into place. Also if you do Roberts repair I’d maybe recommend using a torch lighter, it will drastically speed up your repair. You’ve helped me a buch with my new Volvo and I can’t thank you enough 🙏🏻
You are welcome
Robert, you are an honorary Swede. Thanks for all your help. You never let me down.

Very nice. Thanks for watching.
Was able to correct the twisting passenger seat problem on my 1998 S90 without removing the seat, using Robert's video as the guide. I determined which cable it was by running the motor and feeling the cable cover with my finger for vibration from the turning cable. I shortened the cable at the motor end, which was accessible from the front, once I raised the seat up. Also was able to get the seat to move and straighten out before removing the cable by pushing the cable towards the seat transmission (reengaging the cable) and activating the switch. One problem was getting the removed cable back into the motor. An hour later, the solution was to activate the motor while pushing the cable in; seems simple in hindsight. All is good, thanks to Robert.
You are welcome. Glad you got it done.
@@RobertDIYIs there any reason the quarter inch has to come off the end? Would one get the same result if they took 1/4 inch of the sheathing out of the middle, re engaged the shaft and taped up the splice? Seems like it would be easier.
Thank you for this video... just completed this repair on my ‘98 V90. Was able to reach under and complete the repair without removing the seat thankfully. So happy to be able to adjust my driver’s seat now and my wife can finally comfortably drive this car now too as it was previously stuck all the way back. Thank you again!
You are welcome.
Robert is certainly a real one! I have been looking at various auto repair RUclips videos recently and found it very refreshing to see Robert using a similar tool set/location as what I am more used to. All of these RUclips channels filmed in nice garages, with immaculate tool layouts, and technicians wearing latex gloves can contain a wealth of knowledge, but no way showcase what most DIY mechanics go through when working on things in their driveway/garage/wherever their vehicle broke down at.
Thanks for watching.
Gonna go out and and repair my '95 940 Turbowagon's driver seat - thanks Robert, you're the best!
David Silbert Cool, thanks for watching.
Robert- You are the Doctor! Actually found that the cable can easily slide out. Mine got caught on a baseball and pulled out. Just pushed it back in and seat no longer jammed. THX 4 the Vid.
You are welcome
i just did this repair on my daughters 940. i just removed the entire seat and viola!; it worked just as shown in your video. bravo sir and thanks for the video!
Eric Edmonds Nice. Those seats are so heavy I try to leave them in. LOL
Fixed mine 98 Volvo S90 this morning without taking the seat out. Works great $0 cost. Cut about 3/8" off cable cover just like you said. Thank You for the great Video. You can't imagine how I felt when I put it back together and the seat worked like new.
Awesome! Glad it worked.
I followed these instructions and it worked like a charm. I fixed the stuck/twisting front seat on my Volvo 960. I set aside 4 hours for the job. I was done in 2!
Well done sir. Very well done.
You are welcome
Robert, Excellent detailed instruction. Just shortened two cable hoses, grease them and clean the track. The forward/backward movements run as new. I push the steel cable to the end of the gearbox and the end of the motor in order to measure the correct length to cut off.
Very nice. Glad it helps.
6 years later this was a huge help for me! I still need to do the job, but man this is easy to understand
awesome. thanks for watching.
I'm from England and there are only three 3 ltr nine-sixty saloons left on the road. So it's really important to me to keep mine going. I had to take the whole seat out for ease but I wouldn't of had a clue without your video. Thanks.
You are welcome.
Just did this fix today on my 940, for the first time in over two years the seat it working fine. I was ready to convert them to manual controls, but this fixed cost me $0....Thanks Robert!
Matt C So this is the same on the 940 cars?
Robert DIY Yes exactly the same.
Nice, thank you.
Robert you’re a legend! Got a fixer upper ‘97 960 as my first car a few weeks ago. I’m 6ft and it was stuck so far forward that I’d have to drive spread eagle and it was starting to hurt my lower back really bad. I could barely walk around so I decided today would be the day I fixed it. I’ve never worked on cars before so it took me a few hours and a lot of lessons learned, but it worked! I’m going to frequent your channel to figure out ways to fix up and maintain my car myself, thanks for creating this great resource :)
you are welcome
I'm ready to try this. I've been thinking something was stuck in the tracks of our 1995 960 and jamming the right side of the front passenger seat, but I haven't been able to find anything. This video makes it clear that this is a common problem, and I should be able to fix it.
Yep.
I just bought a running and driving 960 wagon from a friend for $100. This was one of the problems with the car, and your video perfectly explained how to fix it. I would've had no idea what to do without it. Thank you!!
You are welcome.
Has the timing belt been done?
Another project on my daughter's 1997 960 fixed, thanks Robert!
RatnDat Cool. Thanks for watching.
Robert, you & your generous DIY videos are invaluable. Many thx.
You are welcome.
thank you very much for this video, I just got a 1996 960 volvo as my first car and it had this issue almost immediately.
+ethan barrett thanks for watching
This video helped me absolutely fix the problem. Saved me a ton of work. Thank you so much.🙏💪🏻😎⚙️🔧
you are welcome.
Worked perfectly! Thank you so much for sharing this info with us Robert
You're welcome!
Thorough and excellent video. Thank you. My '95 960 Wagon has this exact malfunction.
+Wally Berger Glad it helped.
Good info. Thanks. Jiggled the center cable while pushing the button to move the seat forward (where it will stay for now!).
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Robert!
You are welcome.
Robert you are The Man! I VERY much appreciate your taking the time to make these videos that are so helpful for those of us with not-so-young cars. Having finished this repair I can only imagine how much it would have cost me to get it fixed in a shop. And they might have tried to sell me a new seat motor or some other unnecessary thing. Thanks for saving me some major bucks!
In case it might help someone else, I'd like to add a few things.
My problem was that one of the motors quit working with the seat waaaaaay back so that the covers over the bolts couldn't be removed. No remove covers, no remove bolts! Hmmmmm. The two things that got me out of this mess were:
1) Right-angle attachment to my drill so that I could use a T-20 bit and remove the cable brackets. NO way to reach in there with my larger hand and VERY difficult to see the bolts to remove them from the brackets. I was able to *barely* see them with a mirror so I could use the right-angle to put the T-20 into the bolt and get them off. I couldn't have turned any screwdriver with enough force to get them off because no room for screwdriver OR hand to turn it. And even if I had been able to get them off, getting them back in place again? Yeah, sure. NO WAY. I have NO idea how you managed. You've obviously got more skill at it than I have. Or VERY skinny hands!
2) Once the bracket was off, I used my drill to turn the cable on the side that wasn't working. This brought the seat forward and I was then able to remove the bolts and fix the mechanism. With the bolts out removing the seat was pretty easy so putting the cables and brackets back where they belonged (after performing your marvelous FIX) was easy.
I'd love to know WHY this happens. It's hard to imagine that the thick, plastic sleeve stretches, and surely the cable doesn't stretch. How come it works for 20 years and then becomes too short? "Enquiring Minds Want to Know"
Thanks again for the GREAT work!
Over time the cable somehow floats in the sleeve and shifts to one end. 🤷🏾♂️
Brilliant vid Robert, thank you, my seat is stuck 1/2 cocked, so now i know what to do. Great !
You are welcome.
Wow. Great video, Robert. Hopefully I can pull this repair off myself.
🤞🏾
Perfect! Although, I no longer have the car I had this same problem 10 years ago in my 960, a very fine car by the way.
+jewllake My favorite.
You sure know what your doing. thank you for your information.
Thanks for watching.
The first thing I did was check the fuses,I tried pushing the seat and that may very well be the problem but it is VERY stuck,I used a 3ft crow bar and a friend working the mechanism and nothing I'm going to check all the negative connections tomorrow.I thank you so much Robert for your time,if you can think of anything else I would appreciate
+Terence Biggins do you hear the motor running?
Thank you sincerely Robert for a informative video, have got the seat out, now busy with the cable part. Regards Sean Cameron, Alberton, South Africa
awesome
Thanks again Robert, was a success!!
worked like charm. Thank you!
You are welcome.
Great vid Robert , thanks for that ...my seats stuck way forward...its ok for a 4ft 10 person but i am 6ft 4, and its painful. No worries now
Good deal.
Thank you. Just what I needed.
You are welcome
Thank you so much Robert you are the best brother thanks
Jorge Gallardo Thank you for watching.
What a great fix robert :-)), i like those chunky motors, volvo designers dont mess around do they lol.
i did a similar sort of fix to my mates old car, the speedo stopped working.
The square core snapped where it entered the speedo, so i took a small hacksaw and removed some of the spiral steel outer jacket and crimped the coller bit back on.
It worked and it saved buying a new cable :-)
zx8401ztv Good deal. Yes those are strong motors. I have seen them bend coins.
amazing how this info gets discovered along the way---great vid--Im thinking would possibly apply to a Camry as well..
+S Fiori I have no idea.
Love the videos! You are a huge help!! Thanks my friend!
+Jon DLT Thanks for watching.
Awesome video!
Thanks for watching
your a life saver!
+TwinsTec101 thanks for watching.
Thanks for the info!

found the one seat fuse near the steering wheel was good, yesterday here in Thailand. The driver's seat electrical connections looked the same as the video. The seat in my 1993 Executive came out the same, except the air bag wasn't seen. The three motors that were showing didn't change the reclining seat function. We found the fourth motor inside the seat back and twisted the cables on either side until the teeth on the mechanism counted 7 1/2 each, so the car could be driven. Then, the black part of the cable was done like the video. The wires were torn on the black part of the cable end, before I trimmed it. I trimmed too much and we couldn't get the two screws and bracket together. We took it apart again and got it right. In retrospect, only 1/2 a cm or less should have been taken off. The tip of the metal cable was rounded, but that would have taken a real saw. We also checked the switch with a multimeter. With it all back together, it all functions nicely. My guess is it was the black part of the cable that fixed it, but who knows. Thanks Robert!
+Pratyut Tit thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much, very helpful! :-)
you are welcome.
ok, I have to admit being a Raider fan from that era. There are two Raider fans in my town, so we lay low AMAP. :)
John Wuitschick LOL, lots of Raider fans here.
thx man, helped me alot!
Good deal, thanks for watching.
I've got 3 of these S90's... I love them (obviously) but I've done this on 2 of the three cars and one of the V90's I sold
Build broke.
Hi, the videos, this in specific, helped me so much to let old volvos running. Good work Robert! What I didn't find is a video about fixing a hanging roof in a 960/S90 Sedan. Can somebody Help me?
ruclips.net/video/gt9w-ZSxs9I/видео.html
Robert i have a 2001 V70 with a driver seat stuck forward. All the other positions are functional
ok, is the switch bad or the controller?
Hi Robert. Its finally time to send you BIG THANK YOU for all the great videos. We got ourselves a 1998 S90 and without you I would have spent quite a bit of money. Therefore PRAISE where praise is deserved SIR! I just removed my passenger seat as it wasnt moving anymore, at first it went sideways and then stopped altogether. I havent fixed it yet but am sure its the problem you described very well. Now when I disconnected the power cables I saw that there is a connector on the seat with a GREEN and a BLACK wire and it was NOT connected to the car at all. Do you know what that is for? It does not look like there is a male connector on the car nearby. Thanks again Robert and keep up the great work!!! PS: If one can remove a seat that is all the way back and not moving one will have 8 more joints in his limbs... lol
Maybe heated seat.
Thanks for watching
@@RobertDIY Thanks again Robert. I still havent found the other end on the car side but your seat mod is amazing. I did the forward backwards cables as this is the one used the most and it now works like a charm!!! People like you are often overlooked but the world is a better place with the "Roberts" in it!!!!
Robert,
I own a 97 Volvo 960 and your vids are beyond beneficial. Also, my horn was damaged in a minor accident. Is it possible for you to do DYI horn repair. Appreciate you!
Blessings,
I would replace it.
Man, i want those seats for my 940 xD
💪🏾
Performed repaired after watching video. It is the forward/backward motion that is binding. Now after the repair only the side of the seat closest to armrest is moving. The seat quickly binds. Any ideas! Your videos are great! Already done antennae repair.
+Stephen Bahen Cable, button or motor.
Hey man your videos are great. I own a 960 and I was wondering if you know how to remove the whole 3rd brake light system from it? I'm trying to completely get rid of it and use the wiring for the new brake light on the 850 spoiler I'm installing. if you could give me an idea of what liner I need to remove to access the mounting bolts that would be great!
+nickx1852 no I don't.
Thanks so much for the video, had this exact problem! I took the cable out, twisted it and put it back and now the seat travels forward and backward, which is progress! But although both sides are now travelling together, it only goes forward and backwards about 3 inches and then stops. Any ideas what the new problem is? The runners are clean, it's not getting stuck on anything and everything else is working fine! Thanks again for the easy to follow video 👍
Maybe it's out of alignment.
I have the same model Volvo. I am having this problem, and I'm trying to do it myself, but to no avail.
+Tony Oriji Remove the seat.
Hi Robert! Thanks for all your videos! I recently got a 97' Volvo 850. The forward/back button was not working when I got it, however, the up/down and recline seem to be working fine. I got the switch panel off and checked all the solder points and they seem to be fine. I got the back two bolts off the seat but I can't get the front two bolts off because the seat is stuck in the forward position on the tracks blocking access to the front bolts. When I test the button I can hear the motor trying to engage but I can't see any twitching in any of the cables. I was able to access the rear cable but it seems to be in a different format than the one shown in this video. Any suggestions on what to do or try next? Thanks, Elisheva
Not really. Maybe you can try jumping the motor.
Great video, Robert! Your seat fix worked on my 940. BUT, I now need to reset the seat on the tracks, as the tracks are out of alignment. Can you recommend a video or other information to assist with resetting the seat on the tracks? Thanks!
Disconnect the seat and run it straight and you should be good.
@@RobertDIY Thanks, Robert. I disconnected the seat and ran the seat back and forth numerous times and it appears - at least in this case - the tracks do not self-align. I got one track still sitting about an inch ahead of the other. If you have any other thoughts, I'd like to hear them. If not, then thanks again for getting me this far!
I was suggesting take one side loose, get it to align, then reconnect it.
@@RobertDIY Got it. Thanks again, Robert!
Thanks for the video. I have a V90 with the exact fore/aft twist issue. I took the seat out, shortened all the cable jackets, and re-installed. Now I can see the seat travels fore/aft on both sides, but only goes a fraction of an inch, like one little click. While I had the cables out of the motors, I chucks them into my drill to test, and was able able to see the seat travel fore/aft at least a few inches. What have I done wrong?
This was a major pain in the butt job, BTW with my limited tools. Thanks!
Probably something stuck in the tracks or the motors are damaged from years of abuse.
@@RobertDIY Thanks. Nothing in the tracks because it moves with the drill spinning the cable. Should be pretty easy to install a new motor and I'd only need one. The passenger side seat is completely dead in the water - no buttons work at all. Haven't even troubleshooted that yet. Any thoughts? Thanks again!
I think that panel has a lock out switch, it's red.
Ugh. Had a day off and had this project on my list. Got front bolts off and got the carpet off the back only to find I could not get at the 10mm bolt on the console side of the carpet bracket with any of the tools I have. Then tried to get at motor with the seat still in there but cannot get torx in there to get motor out while seat still in there. Going to borrow some other tools and try it again later. :-/
Ouch!
Ugh. Started working on it again today. Got carpet brackets out but got stuck this time when I could not get a wrench on the back right seat bolt. Sockets won’t go on because seat is too far back, closed end wrench won’t go on either. Finally tried open-end wrench but little metal tab blocks the access. Almost at point of giving up. :(
@@carlseiler6441 try to give the cable a little tension when you try to move the seat forward, if I'm correct the seat should move
Kevin Terbeek yes, someone on Facebook posted a video showing that. I was unable to get it to work that way. Our cable must be much further out :(
I always look for your videos when I have Volvo issues....but I'm not so sure until you lose that Steelers hat :)
Six-peat man.
Hi Robert, I Have a basket case of a 94' 960. My driver seat has the binding issue, in addition to the upper seat recline function being inoperable. Do you think this is motor related or a simple matter of replacing the control unit? my passenger seat is completely dead so I ordered a new control unit and i'm hoping for the best.
Maybe the controller.
I have a 2004 s80 ,"and by the way I love this car."both up & down forward & backwards both stopped working at the same time so it doesn't sound like what your talking about in the video.any ideas?thank you for your time
+Terence Biggins fuse
My mechanic things it may be stuck. He said push on it real hard or bang on it while pushing the button.
Hii Robert while driving my 850 i hit bump onthe road . My radio stopped PLAYING now powwer in on station is tuned 93,5 Fm BUT NO audio out . I pull out check connetion wirig all secured,Ireset the entire vehile on still remind the same. pls advie what esle tocheck .Thank you in advnce
Sad to say I have no idea. You can try installing a different radio.
Hello Robert. I have a 1998 v90. My seats move back and forth about an inch or so. I thought it may be the cable, so I cut a notch in the sheath to access the cable with pliers. I tried moving the cable side to side to no avail. If I get a small amount of movement from the seat, is it safe to say it is probably not the cable? Also, the cable stops spinning when the seat stops moving.
+James Sorensen Not sure. Pull the seat and make sure nothing is jammed in the track.
Do you know wich motor of this three wich is to move the seat forward and back?
The cable will twitch when you activate the button.
Working on this but the recline isn't working on one side. The motor is on the back of the seat. In the back of the seat, there are 4 wire loops holding the backside leather to the front. Pull those apart with needle nose (or cut them), fold the backside leather up as much as you can, and you'll see the motor. Same repair from there. I did this with full seat removal, but I imagine it's feasible with the seat in the car.
I'll be reattaching the front and back leather with zip ties.
Same on the 850's.
@@RobertDIY interesting. The X70 seats are direct drive, appear to not have cables at all. But I didn't see the recline part when I looked.
Never seen the issue with those. The 960's were designed pre '93. lol
I have a 1994 volvo 850, I have an issue when I drive the car it stalls sometimes....The lights are still on just motor stalls out, when I try to restart the car it's rare that it's starts........The things I did so far to fix issue are.....replaced ignition relay, trouble shoot fuel pump, also replaced coil. I would really appreciate if you can give me some ideas.
Jorge Gallardo Do you have any error codes? What is missing when you try to restart it? - Car Will Not Start Trouble Shooting Guide - Auto Repair Series
Hey Robert, I did this fix and both sides move the seat forward just fine now, but to move it back, I have to repeatedly "bump" the switch. Do you know what is causing this?
Maybe the switch is bad.
Would this work on a 2004 s 60??
Probably not.
im just waiting for this problem in my s90. especially since im back in the US from japan and we only have one car. my wife is 5feet 2. so everytime we each drive the car, we have to shift the seat big time. im only here for another 6 months anyway, then its back to japan. hopefully it doesnt break before then.
+stefhen bryan Do you use the memory buttons?
+Robert DIY yes. why? bad idea?
No, great idea.
+Robert DIY what difference does it make?
None, just easier to hold a button down. A lot of people don't know how to program and use the buttons. Just checking to see if you did.
How do i fix seat wont go back up, driver seat is leaned all the way back
Recliner?
@@RobertDIY The driver seat, it is stuck all the way back from the motor not moving it up. I can hear the motor run buy it dont move. Any way to rig it to at least go back up ? Thanks
How Robert does this apply for a v70 too 2003 ?
