  • Henry B. Smith Jr. of Associates for Biblical Research is the guest on Real Science Radio and discusses the numerical divergences between the Masoretic Text and the Septuagint in Genesis 5 and 11. Smith proposes that the LXX preserves (most of) the original numbers in Genesis 5 and 11. Most of the MT’s chronology in Genesis 5 and 11 does not represent the original text, and is the result of a deliberate and systematic post-AD 70 corruption. The historical and theological implications of these differences are discussed, and the impact that the Enlightenment and Darwinism has had on biblical interpretation. The conversation also addresses the preservation of the written word of God and the challenges of determining the most accurate representation of the original text. Henry outlines the motivation, means, and opportunity for systematic changes to the chronology. The discussion also touches on the significance of scripture in purifying and educating believers, as well as the responsibility to make all aware of their sin and need for salvation.
