Awesome 🙌🏻 have you used ARTURIA Spark drum machine could you do a video RUclips how to use it for 80s tempo. Also in the mix how to keep all the layers time synced also how to have your mixed song and your video sync when you lip-sync the video. Seems not a super easy task
Thanks 👍. No I haven't tried Spark. I would like a couple of hardware drum machines though 😁.... Just don't have the room for them. Thanks for the suggestion.
I'd not use a computer for live. I'd take my Roland digital piano (which does quite a lot on its own), some pre-recorded backing tracks, and a couple of musician friends (for drums and guitar)... all fed into a mixer with built in effects. Honestly though, while I've produced for other people, the only live performance I've given was back when I was a teenager.
@@juliancroot Gotcha. I like to sound as close as possible to the recording. I was wondering about plugins to add live to make it sound better with bass guitar, drums, guitars. I know that playing live with VSTs will scare the hell out of most poeple. :)
Not tried that yet, but out of curiosity I just had a quick listen, and it sounds like it could be real violins played marcato style. But its probably more than that. If I was to do it now, I'd start with an orchestral sample library with a good marcato violins patch and work up from there.
Ooh, is that Howard Jones a hint of a song to come? 🙂 I'm looking forward to learning about mixing with EQ, etc. As it's something I'm not very good at. I just throw knobs all over the place.
Hey Julian. Van Halen's Jump's synth is actually an Oberheim, there is a very accurate VST that is pretty cheap (maybe even free, can't rememebr for sure) made by DiscoDSP.
Hi Julian, just came across your channel as I'm slowly starting to build my own studio. I was very interested in your choice of VST's and I really look forward to more videos about the mixing side, as you mention. Love your 80's recreations. You are super talented. Thank you
Probably something I'll do a video on at some point. It really depends what role each part is playing... And I think it's easy to over complicate it. EQ, compression and reverb should be all you really need... Just try to get your levels to an appropriate point first.
@@ATGamer-zv5sg just don't leave a compressor to do all the work. Set the volume of the parts you want to blend so it's giving you the sound you are aiming for. The compressor should just be the icing on the cake. Also if one of the parts has way more bass than the other, then you'll have trouble blending the two nicely unless you EQ some of the bass out first. That said, the right approach v for your goal might be completely opposite to what I've just said. I do think good mixing decisions come down to experience... Which basically means you have to make some terrible mixes before you make good ones. I made a video a while back describing my musical journey, and sharing some of my early mixes... Which were really bad. But I've learned from my mistakes.....I think 😆.
@@juliancroot thanks so much I’ll take those facts into consideration, I saw that video on the musical journey too. I think your an incredibly talented musician👏🏾👏🏾.Your video you made years ago called making an 80s synth wave track in 1 hour I was left stunned👏🏾

Thanks for your kind words, it's a real motivation to hear that. 👍

how do i replicate the strings used in 80s songs like rock with you by michael jackson

Nice video! …..and Cat 😄
So when people detune an oscilator, they are only detuning one, correct?
Yes... otherwise its just out of tune :).

Throwing knobs all over the place can be a legitimate strategy as long as your ears are engaged... In fact it's probably the best way to learn. 👍
don't u like arturia analog lab?

Yeah sure. I have it.
I just reach for other stuff first.

I never quite got on with the interface though.
Maybe I'm getting old 😁.

How do I blend sounds together for example pads or brass because I aim for those fat, warm 80s sounds
