  • In 2020, and to everyone's surprise, Nissan discontinued the Cummins diesel engine on the Titan - here's why.
In 2019, Nissan made headlines when it announced its plans to discontinue the Titan XD along with the Cummins diesel engine for the 2020 model year. This came as a shock for Nissan enthusiasts, mainly because the truck along with the unique diesel engine was only introduced in 2015.
The Cummins 5.0-liter V8 turbo diesel engine was first offered as an option on the 2016 Nissan Titan XD and generated 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain would have been a sure hit with eco-conscious consumers, as it achieved near-zero oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions. As well, Nissan offered the engine with an advanced ceramic glow plug system that kept it from freezing up, even in winter.
Sadly, its sudden demise means we're left to rue at what might have been if it had a long, successful run. Here, we detail how a promising powertrain ended up being a disappointment.

The reason they failed is primarily because they never, EVER marketed the damn thing. Let alone the diesel option... GM made the exact same mistake in the early 2000's with Quadrasteer. I had a Quadrasteer Suburban for about a year a while back and it was a really awesome system. But they never marketed the system in anything other than hour long infomercials that literally everyone HATES. So no one really knew about it. The same is true with the Cummins Titan XD.
The ONLY issues with the Cummins engine in these trucks is NISSAN Techs not having a GOD DAMN Clue what they're doing with a diesel engine. I called this from the start when they announced the plans to start selling diesels. I know Nissan is no stranger to diesels in other markets. But in America it is unheard of...Especially in a truck. And NONE of the Techs at their dealers had any clue how to even do a basic service on the Cummins. Let alone how to properly diagnose actual problems. I've been a Diesel Mechanic for 20 years so it doesn't scare me. But I know a few extremely good auto mechanics and when it comes to anything diesel they usually just say no. Nissan really needed to partner with known Cummins Dealers to get these trucks serviced and maintained PROPERLY until they had sufficient time to educate any of their techs that would have been interested in furthering their knowledge. I promise you there would have been at least a couple at each dealer.
I own a 2017 Cummins Titan and it's been a great truck with ZERO issues. No it's not the 1 ton dually I'd like. But it does everything I need it to do. It plows my driveway with a 10' Blizzard Power Plow. Which is an extremely heavy plow and it handles it just fine. It's actually got a WAY better Front Axle weight rating than Chevy. Almost 1,000lb more. So it holds up my plow with ease.
As far as towing capacities are concerned... It might be rated for slightly less than a true 3/4 ton and it might even be a little less than an Ecoboost F150. But pulling a load with a Gas V6 is DREADFUL. I've done it and it is horrible. The cummins on the other hand...It pulls trailers beautifully. I regularly load it to 15,000lbs+ and it handles that quite well. Does it pull hills as good as a 450hp Duramax truck? Of course not. But at almost 1/3 the price. I'm ok with not maintaining 70mph on a hill at full capacity. And when I'm just driving to work and back. I average 20mpg... The one thing Nissan did better than every other brand is the sound system. It's got a Rockford Fosgate system in it and usually these branded systems are kind of a joke. NOT THIS! It POUNDS for being a factory installed system! Of course they tried as hard as possible to slip that under the radar too by installing the cheapest looking and clunkiest operating head unit I've ever seen. In 2017 when the rest of the manufacturers were using screens from 8"-12". This one is 6.5" and looks like the cheap knock off units on eBay. However, as I mentioned the sound system is great. So I have no complaints other than the steering being a little heavy for my liking.

I have a 17 lifted on 35s, pull all over the country with it.
it has power to pull a 24' trailer, and does everything but turn 😂.
Did yall know it has 0 gravity seats designed by Nasa. literally simulates weightlesness for long hauls. Ive pulled 11-14 hour trips and never felt stiff getting out of my truck.
The one point I would like to make to the community as told by a Master Diesel Tech, is the problem with the motor is not related to the motor, but it has to do with the Bosch fuel pump components and ultra low sulfur diesel of the USA.
In Europe the lubricosity of the fuel is higher because of the sulfur content, and is what those Bosch components are designed for.
They were imported and warned that the low sulfur diesel of the USA would cause these components to fail.
You can use additives in your diesel to offset this, Ive used Heet in my truck, and had no issues.
Big Smiles, and Happy Miles! Truck on Black Sheep Diesels!

I have owned one of these trucks for several years now in the pro 4x version. I purchased the truck with only 12,000 miles on it and now it has nearly 163,000 with 0 issues except replacing injectors around 120,000 miles.
The reason why this truck flopped in my personal opinion is exactly what most people agree on when they express " marketing and updating ".
Nissan failed or neglected to push these trucks, gas or diesel. They also done the same thing regarding updating the exterior and interior design less often than most.
For years people thought these particular diesel engines couldn't be deleted and tuned like the big 3 could and yes they absolutely can!
These titans are extremely choked off and under rated regarding power from factory that it turned alot people off.
Resale value and depreciation is another nissan brand complaint that is unfortunate but very true.
So here's my personal and final verdict of owning one of these and ram/chevy 1500/2500 trucks combined.
The titan xd Cummins is by far my current favorite across the board. Once deleted and tuned with a couple more basic and common power add ons, this truck is right up there with the big 3 and they're factory specs!
If you Maintenance these trucks with a good reliable brand of parts and fluids regularly and properly, the chances of major expensive issues will drastically decrease more than not! Diesels are made to run hot and consistently hard not puting around the neighborhood or city for a short commute each day or throw an offset sticker on your window, squat the ass and raise the front 6 inches with 26 inch blades wrapped in spaghetti thin tires rolling coal lol....! 😂
Understand what your buying and why you need it first regardless what others say.
You also want a gas v8 that lasts forever? Titan and tundra own that category as well in the 1500 class, especially since 2009!
Nissan wouldn't compromise with the governments epa regulations like the deadly cylinder deactivation disasters so id say that has a role to play as well...

My local dealer ordered a couple of these. The trucks seemed to have every option available and were overpriced. They should have ordered a fully optioned truck and a base truck. The base truck probably would have sold and at least there would have been some on the street. Overpricing to begin with was the first problem here. I am located in Southern Indiana.

Same. I have a 2019 Frontier Pro4x and love it. The main reason I bought it was because it doesn’t have many of the electronic bells and whistles and it drives like a truck. I might still buy a Titan someday. I know lots of guys who have put over 200,000 miles on theirs with no problems. Can’t say that about any of the big three.

I have owned two of these and still have my 2018 cummins. I tow a 23 ft car hauler with 2 sxs so pulling almost 9k pounds. The 2016 is the only years with crankshaft issues. Fyi the titan has the same towing capacity as an f250, people need to look up actual numbers. These nissans are way underrated by consumers and they are awesome trucks. I got rid of my two year old f150 3.5l with 27k miles because it needed major engine overhaul. That is the second f150 i have owned that had major problems with less than 30k miles. Done with ford, and i will drive this nissan as long as possible. Also the comments on forums about coking is the same issue with all diesels, you have to get it out for a long drive and get it to regen properly. These new diesels are not a stop and go commuter.

The truck is classed as a 2B which is 3/4 category. It's a 3/4 ton with 6 bolt axles. Whether it's a reg cab, extended cab, or crew cab all the Titan XD diesels have the exact same GCVW with towing numbers I believe the truck and trailer weight is around 19200lb, or 19600lb total and that is within 500lb or so of 3/4 tons for 16. They built the truck to mimic the early 2000s diesel pickups. 300hp 500tq and could tow around 13000lbs.
