A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones Creator George R. R. Martin Interview
Plot twist: George RR Martin actually finishes Winds of Winter!
Let's not get crazy now. #FingersCrossed
He did say it would be out this year didn’t he
@@wilmafistfit4788 We have no reason to believe anything he says about when it will be out. He has always been shit at meeting deadlines.
@Rahat Uddin Mohammad why would we worry about the final book? We haven't even got this one yet? I mean isn't that like putting the cart before the horse or something ? doesn't make a lot of sense
I actually expect it to release this year. I heard he couldn't release the books because the show was still running and the showrunners wouldn't let him. Now that the show has ended, there won't be any problem.
Barristan is probably the character who the show killed but is still alive in the books and has a role in the twist.
or Stannis
Stannis is more probable. What major plot twist could Barristan have? I dont think so. Stannis or Lady Stoneheart maybe.
@@jonoc3729 Yeah Barristan's is mostly just a secondary character to Dany. The only reason he was a POV was to have eyes of what's going on in Meereen. He's probably either going to die in the Battle of Fire, or just lose POV status when his purpose is over and Dany has returned
I say Littlefinger
Mance Rayder?
Stannis, Doran, Barristan, the Black Fish, Mance, Lady Stoneheart, there are so many options
And Rickon... poor him nobody care about him.😣😔 He is the future of House Stark.
Stannis, Rickon and Doran makes more sense
Jojen
Blackfish does work, Jamie took riverrun in the books, that's when blackfish dies in the show, he escaped in the books, some things from season 6 has already happened in the books remember
Barristan. Once for blood.
Plot twist: Samwell Tarly invents actual plot armor.
PlotSteel Armor
George is a GOAT. He’s had a tough life, and I respect him in all different levels. Give this man a break he may not be the most productive author, but he’s in the middle of making history if he needs ten years for the next book then.... well if it finishes better then the show then why hate.
I wouldnt say he's not too productive. Have you seen the size of his books? One of them is bigger than the whole LOTR..
@@danielmgalhaes oh fs i have his first book, and ive compared it to many trilogies the same size as it.
For me it's not so much the amount of time it may take him but that he may not live to finish them
Yes..I have high hopes for Winds of Winter..and if it gives the payoff for all the things set up..it may actually be the GOAT of fantasy..
Because he has taken so long someone else will have to finish it for him, and we'll never know what the full story would have been like if he wrote it all himself.
Stannis and Stoneheart and Jon Connington and fAegon. I can’t wait to read something completely different from the show!
Me too!!!!
There's Ryan, a writer and showrunner for _House of the Dragon_ years laters. I wish him the best.
I hope it's Stannis
Stannis Stannis STANNIS!
Is that the cry of the knights at the battle beyond the wall of ASoS? سلطان الشمري
@@joshhoffman5233 indeed.
D&D aren't actually bloodier than Martin, look at all the characters they've kept alive with plot armor, it's ridiculous
Hitler has ploy armor too
If you want to talk about plot amor, please refer to book Tyrion
They seem to kill more off to end their scenes faster
@@sandisithebe673 You do have a point... But at the same time, while he somehow escaped the battle of blackwater, he still got horribly scared for life.
Name one. Just finished reading dance. I can’t think of a single character that lived in the show but died in the book. Dondarion trading his life for stoneheart is net neutral since Kat is dead in the show.
“D&D are more bloody minded” - GRRM
“We gon kill this man’s whole career” - D&D
Barristan? Roose? Mance? my money is on stannis tbh
I really think that it will be barriston. I DO think Stannis will do more, but the twist will be Barriston. Or the Black fish, who knows...
I agree it’s stannis
Stannis the mannis! OMG need that book out already
Tamar Schwarcz Stannis the Manis
*Mannis
About the character that's alive in the books, but dead in the show: i've read many comments, but everyone keeps forgetting Mago. He specifically advised them not to kill that guy in season 1, as he had plans for him. Small character, but still, he went out of his way to try and keep him alive in the show. So there might be a slight chance it's him.
My guess is Stannis, because the Battle of Winterfell has yet to happen in books and there are twists and plots brewing
@@saskk2290 yeah i also think its Stannis. i would love to see a redemption arc for him
I think Rickon
Euron
I feel like the ultra condensed Danny v Dothraki 2.0 storyline we got in the show would've been the same regardless of whether they kept Mago around or not, as far as they were concerned, so much was merged together, and so many stories altered and cut that they just needed a vague horse lord stand in . . . I also feel like Its not going to be THAT huge of an unexpected story progression in the book other than a more fleshed out story of self re-discovery for Danny, for which Mago ain't all that important but a means to an ends?
There are WAY more than 15 characters that are still alive in the books!
Hasn't he said that there's 15 characters killed in the show but alive in the books?
My guess is that it could be Mance or Stannis, possibly Rickon
Dragonblood811 This interview was before Season 6
its definetely stannis
I was thinking Lady Stoneheart with Brienne and Jamie etc
plot twist rickon decided not to run in straight line
@Matt I'm around book two of the series and Rickon is pretty feral, he' s as grumpy and vicious as Shagydog. It would be interesting if he does something with that.
Lord Petyr Baelish, Ser Barristan Selmy and One true king of Westeros Stannis Baratheon ❤️
Petyr! Petyr! Petyr!
The only character I care about is Stannis. The books will do him justice.
And then he dies in the prologue lol just kidding, dont know if i have a fav but if i had to choose the one would be the Mannis as well.
Why is he your favorite? I think he's a real interesting character but I don't get why he has so many fans, specially considering how he's disliked by most other characters in the books. Tyrion literally says "no one likes Stannis".
What books are you reading
I like tv stannis more than book stannis
@@0404chrisjz TV Stannis got a really horrible ending though
Oh it's definitely Stannis! They did my man wrong in the show...well they did the whole show wrong tbh
I hate how the self proclaimed "diehard" fans of the show justify Stannis's character development. "He was always a bad man, greedy for power, that's why he burned his own daughter" never ever was it stated that he pursued the crown for power. He always said it was his duty, and he never asked for it. Gtfo with your bs interpretations. The showrunners basically admitted it when they said they never liked Stannis. That's why they got rid of him so cheaply
@What ? Where do u got that idea that George was planning to kill Stannis in the battle of Winterfell? Afaik book 6 isn't out yet and I haven't read about any statements of George about it. And sry it IS their fault, how come two writers with a huge budget can't write shit on their own? Good writers would make their own logical story, with help of other people. But they aren't good writers, as we all know since season 8
@What ? Season 1 to 4 where the best. And that's because they faithfully followed GRRM's work. Starting in S5 D&D began making their own story mixed in with A Dance with Dragons. Season 6 to 8 are just terrible. Each one worse than the one before ending in the pile of dog shit that was S8
@What ? ok buddy...S5 is faithful to the books? Haha
So Jon Snow in S5 goes to hardhome himself to save the wildlings, that happened in the books? It does not. He only gets a letter describing the massacre that took place there. But the show needed the scene right? Big hero fighting the big baddy. Jon is more a of a general than a soldier in ADWD, spending more time planning than fighting. Fighting the battles in his head rather than with his sword.
Clearly I did not read the books, yeah...
Another one, Brienne.
So she goes straight to Winterfell to save Sansa, who in the books is not even sansa, they don't even THINK is sansa, they think it's arya and in reality is Jeyne Poole. What happened to all of brienne's and pod's story against the brotherhood in S5? I guess I missed that episode then...
Stannis burns his daughter in S5... if I remember correctly by the end of ADWD his army wants to burn asha, not his daughter, and he is AGAINST burning and does not go through with it, he might in TWOW but that book is not out yet, so yeah clearly that's not a faithful representation on Stannis in S5 where he burns his fucking DAUGHTER. In the books he actually leaves a statement saying that should he die his daughter MUST get the Iron throne. Yeah, I did not read the books...
Let' talk about Tyrion's story now. Jorah is the one that contracts Grey Scale in S5, i must have read the name Griff as Jorah in ADWD then, how stupid of me. In reality Jorah in S5 is actually a mix of Sir Connington and Jorah and after S5 he basically becomes Ser Baristan. Tyrion's whole plot of ADWD is underwhelming in the show because they nicked Young Griff, the false dragon. You know, the one that Varys wants in power in the books. But in S5 Varys wants Daenerys...yeah I clearly did not read the books.
And there is more, SO much more to say but man I'm tired of writting. But please...do tell me how I have not read the books again.
@What ? Your words dude: "S5 and 6 were following very closely"
I gave you FACTS about how S5 did not follow "very closely" (those are your words, see them in the comment YOU made).
So good on you to try to twist the meaning of what you said from very closely to not at all. You did a whole 180° just to call me a dumbass.
You sir, are the perfect example of a You Tube comment section.
Go ahead and live your life thinking you won an internet argument if it makes you happy, but next time try to not twist your words to fit your insults and narrative.
So long.
STANNIS WINS BATTLE OF ICE GET HYPE
Isn't that obvious from dance?
mr illis well....mostly no but somewhat yes. According to the pink letter stannis is dead but obviously that’s not legitimate. Winds of winter sample chapters seem to be building up to a surprise stannis win though, despite their poor odds
STANNIS! THE ONE TRUE KING!
Bend the knee or be destroyed!! Stannis is the best fucking character ! Davos is the man too !!
@@ronnietornado396 well, actually all the odds are with Stannis, thats what makes it really weird... he has the numbers, he is defending, he has a lot of surprises for the Bolton scum.
And now the real fans can go back to nerding on the real story. Unlike the show, at least it'll be well written and a real joy...
Unless Euron gets a tentacle up every bum across Westeros.
I can't wait to read more about Rickon in Skagos.
All the unicorns are dead though.
@@caterpillar1936 man i hope so Euron is a twisted sick humain being but at the same time such a geat charachter that forsaken chapter was epic

Imagine Stannis as the epilogue character for Winds. I don't know if I would love that or hate it lol
Or petyr baelish.
maybe for the prologue, theres no way he lives through winds
@@TD-lh9ph He is still alive in a released Theon chapter in Winds
@@pandapirate25yearsago33 If that is the end of Littlefinger I would rather read it in the last Sansa chapter in Winds
@@gregzane6416 ya but he will die at some point in the book, so he can't have an epilogue, potentially prologue tho
I so so so SO hope it's MYRCELLA. I think an arc with Tommen dying and her becoming Queen would be a fascinating arc for her. Especially if her gentle nature and genuine regard for the small folk makes her a beloved ruler. Would complicate things further for Dany, definitely.
And house Tyrell, as they have been plotting to take over for quite some time
ah right, a 10 year old will really influence the politics made in her name
“gold will be their crowns...”
@@lewieb101 I always thought of that as golden hair but ooooh myrcella could finally be queen
If Tommen died then the 7 Kingdoms wouldn't want a Queen. There was a big bloody war called the dance of dragons wich was fought over if a women with a higher right over a son should become queen.
When Tommen dies, then Stannis becomes King.
He's probably talking about the Jaime, and Brienne plotline with lady stoneheart
This is the thing I am most looking forward to... Also I think those two are much more connected in the books, it's the only rather romantic storyline of the books
I'm pretty sure that's not it. The one with stoneheart is bound to happen because it already started in the last book. But the plot they're talking about were one that he was thinking about making still.
@@kamelzyadeh490 lady Stoneheart's story began at the end of Storm of Swords
@@Msoldier94 yeah but I mean the one with Jaime... When he leaves to meet her. I don't remember the details since it's been a while but if I remember correctly that was in the last book. After ignoring the message of Cersei.
@@kamelzyadeh490 Lady Stoneheart is 'dead' for all intents and purposes. Using GRRM's own words she - like Beric - would be something of a 'fire wight'. That's why I feel he wouldn't use that word choice if he were trying to dance around it being LSH. GRRM dances around things, but he doesn't necessarily mislead in that way.
Winds of Winter in 2k20
Oh I hope so!
Very doubtful. I honestly dont think there will be another book. The show messed him up and revealed too much already.
@@j0hn00arthur to be fair, hes done that before.
lordcommander nope
lordcommander that was a joke. But 9 years is a long time. If he takes 9 years for the last book, you might as well believe that it isn’t coming out unless it is posthumously. I don’t think 2 books is enough to finish the story. The endgame isn’t there yet. All of the pieces are strewn across the map. Daenerys will probably make it to Westeros or be on the way at the end of Winds of Winter. Aegon will be king 🤴in the next book.

Doktor Cool thats his fault he needs to speak up
Mikado The Great dude he’s like 70 you sick bastard
My first thought was Barristan Selmy, but I don’t want any twists with him lol I hope he remains steadfastly honorable and loyal to Dany
Yeah I don’t need any twists from him lol. I just need him to lead armies fuck people up in swordplay and kick ass in general
R jr well said
He's prolly gonna die after the battle of meereen because his POV won't be necessary anymore
Oven Mitts I’ll be so disappointed. I could see him and Victorian facing off which might be a good match. I feel like all of the later POVS are bound for death. It would be refreshing to see George maybe take someone like Baristan further into the story and not conclude his story in Meereen. I imagine he will eventually die and Dany will have no more advisors when she loses her mind, but i would like to see him and Dany at least bond for a while. The only way i see him dying is by being deceived somehow.
My guess would be Ser Barristan, who might get the Varys traitor role from the show. He may end up seriously hurting Dany, by leaving her camp for Jon Snow, who's humanity reminds him of his real father, Rhaegar.
Oh!!! Im so geeked he said “the Stars my Destination”. Long a favorite of mine!!
At this point, the plot twist is that the book is actually going to get released at some point
Would've made that joke as early as late 2019 - now though it looks like he's on his big 'pre-release' touring circuit and spinning things up for a release sometime in 2020.
@@fuzzydunlop7928 lmao
If the book gets released in 2021 it would be a miracle. In 2022, I see it, but unlikely.
The sad thing is this comment is two years old and no less true.
@@jonoc3729Guess again
I'm just reading Feast For Crows and BRIENNE is in Duskendale looking for Sansa. The story gets told about The Defiance of Duskendale where Aerys gets held hostage by Lord Denys of that town because Denys wants more tax independence for the town than it already has. Tywin Lannister is about to besiege the place when Ser Barristan Ninja Selmy slinks in at night and performs a rescue of Aerys that Qui Gon Jinn would've been envious of. I thought "Hmmm, Selmy is going to be important in the present tale too"...
He's still considered to be one of the strongest characters (battle-wise) in the world even at such an advanced age. Knights in their PRIME from Dorne like Ser Ironwood were even saying "yeah we can prove we're knights by fighting but Selmy would probably still kill us lol"
"Broad strokes are broad strokes and the devil is on the details." Oh, se know that NOW.
Plot twist : Tyrion is actually Gimli from Lotr.
I'd bet you it's Lady Stoneheart and Jon. Something to do with Rob's Crown.
Sci-fi in disguise. Preston is totally right.
His theory was that Martin was unable to truely switch genre's.

Yeah this interview was in 2016
"And who has a better story than Bran the Broken?"
Even the Warlock child in the beginning of season 3 had a better story than bran ffs.
Ok, but that exact sentence has to be banned from writing
Put on the throne who you want to, idc, but don't reason it with Bran having the best story, especially not if he doesn't do anything for two seasons. (I assume he will not do nothing in the books)
Brans story in the books is by far and a way better than brand in the show. Such a line could pass in the books.
IkilledAGhostOnce If only. Lady Stoneheart, all the people who died yet live in the books, the Dire wolf Nymeria.. they really screwed the pooch and butchered this story and made it Hollywood..
@@IkilledAGhostOnce Welp, I think Bran is relatively boring to read, at least in the first two books.
But what I meant is that Bran would need to do more than what he did in the show for the last two books. Otherwise it feels even more jarring. In season 7 and 8 he exclusively cringed out the other characters which made the statement ridiculous.
Barristan, maybe? Possibly some kind of political intrigue involving Tyrion?
Could be, if Barristan believes Faegon is legit he could switch sides especially if Daeny starts to go mad. The "Treason for gold" could be Barristan joining up with the Golden Company (GRRM has said before prophecy shouldn't be literal so probably won't be a treason for actual financial gain)
@@ViolentMessiah666 Idk, that sounds really out of character for Barristan. If anything if Barristan suspects she could turn sour I think he would be more determined to help her.
@@bebos1262 Mayhaps, his biggest regret with Aerys was he didn't try to do anything when he started going mad. If he tries to help her & she doesn't listen or crosses a line he might think fAegon is a better option to support & technically he has a better claim than hers (the sons of the first son come before the second son or daughter in the line of succession)
@@HebrewsElevenTwentyFive Exactly, plus Varys & Illyrio are trying to pass him off as Rhaegar's son so surrounding him with some of the same people could add to his legitimacy in the eyes of the Westerosi nobles (Jon Connigton as Hand, Barristan as LC of his Kings Guard, mayhaps Gerald Dayne also on his Kings Guard)
@@ViolentMessiah666 Indeed. If Ser Gerold Dayne steals Dawn from Starfall before Joining Aegon VI's Kingsguard, the smallfolk will believe that they have seen Rhaegar and Ser Arthur Dayne reborn. Varys' multiple quotes of illusion, people seeing what they want to see and the power of perception feeds into this possibility.
Everyone's talking about Stannis... Am I the only one who thinks its Margaery?
I actually think it might be Barristan, because if I remember correctly, when he died in Season 5 there was a lot of controversy surrounding that decision and even the actor disagreed with his death because the character is still alive in the books. And since Winds of Winter is supposedly going to open up with the Siege of Meereen taking the main focus at the beginning, I can see some kind of plot twist being intertwined during the chaos of that whole affair. But Margaery as well would be another candidate for the plot twist. If anything she may not die like in the show and may survive the Green Trial and have the full force of Highgarden and the Reach rally for her to take down Cersei.
This made me think about the High Sparrow = Howland Reed theory. Might be a long shot 😂
(Of course the High Sparrow being the only dead one in the show, Howland is presumed alive in both).
Well, it's a character that's alive in the books but dead in the show, so that narrows it down to... EVERYONE! :p
Just think, If GRRM hadn't split Feast and Dance I to seperate books, he'd be working on DOS (ironic initials considering George works on a DOS machine) and we'd have ths WOW right now. I just really wanna see if the new book is gonna be published and on book shelves as the massive 1,500 page tome he said it will be.
Stannis becomes the last Lord Commander of the Nights Watch after his family dies, reigning from the Nightfort. He is the true Night’s King.
Is this the copy and pasted or was the other comment pasted. .hmmm
Haha this is the pasted one Alana!
Plot twist: Everything in the show after Jon's resurrection is a dream
Dude your books are gonna end way better than the show
If he doesn't die before finishing them...
Milton Hunter Amen! The man is definitely not the epitome of someone living healthy
6:32 foreshadowing the show
I always wondered if a crazy plot twist would be for the Mad King Aerys to be some sort of Night King style figure. Maybe when his body was discarded it was somehow captured and turned into one of the Others. I'm not sure how well that would work with the books as I've seen the show but only read the beginning of AGOT. I personally really like the idea of Aerys being both the ice and fire as well as him being the true big baddie of the story. He would also be the one already dead character George is talking about. Likely is just a wacky fan theory I came up with but it would be awesome
This is ominous.
George R R Martin talks more about the book than actually writing it.
Everyone's saying character names but he said there's a twist. I don't think the twist is that a character that dies in the show lives in the books. I think there will actually be a twist, meaning something you think will happen doesn't.
My guess is Littlefinger revealing his lengths of debt collection actually swaying members of even Northern Houses like the Manderlys, getting in the way of the Northern Conspiracy would be an amazing twist to involve the Vale in re-taking the North in a way that makes WAY more sense instead of "Sansa sent a letter and they saved them at the last second in the Battle of the Bastards."
Stannis is the reason why Littlefinger has no interest in the North at present, he has the key to Winterfell in Sansa, so it's MARKETEDLY in his interest to ruin BOTH the Boltons and Stannis, so two birds in one fell swoop, using his swathes of debts owed to him from houses, especially the Manderlys, make me think Davvos is going to be betrayed, AGAIN, by House Manderly. (oh they played double agent sure, but it's all posturing to rescue the heir from the Lannisters).
Honesty, I can't WAIT to see Stoneheart TEAR through all of House Fray. Black Walder is a character I want to see in my mind's eye dangling from a tree with his toes kicking out.
If I remember it right on the show, when Baelish put Sansa with the Boltons, he said to Sansa that Stannis must be there shortly and then he went to King's Landing to ask Cersei if she would support his attack on Winterfell. So I think he planned to do what he did during the Battle of the Bastards but with the war between Stannis and the Boltons, like wait till they are exausted and attack. Only this time, attack back camps. And bring Sansa with him to place her at Winterfell.
Remember kids, forcing an ending is much harder than letting a story flow to its conclusion.
I feel like Winds is finish and George is just keeping us in suspense
Surprised to see no one mentioned Aegon.. my intuition somewhy tells me it has to do with him. People also tend to forget he exists in the show too, just that he died way before S1. GRRM might have guessed people would forget he existed. That, of course, if he is actually Aegon. Maybe that's what the twist is about..
Who is the other writer in the interview and what show does he write for?
He mentions that one of the characters will go through this twist and it involves couple of other characters which one of them is dead in the show in that period. Almost all the comments I read here are certain that the allegedly dead character is the one who will have this twist, but I think the way George mentioned, actually it is one of the other characters he mentions here.
I fucking love Stannis I’m holding out hope that he’ll survive longer is the books
7:32 George RR Martin has spoken! It's pronounced "Games of Throne"
I had to look up old articles from each season of the show to see which characters were killed off, and here is the list of people the show killed off in seasons 1-5 who are verifiably alive in the text (as opposed to fan theories) of the books:
Pyat Pree
Xaro Xhoan Daxos
Mance Rayder
Barristan Selmy
Shireen Baratheon
Hizdahr zo Loraq
Selyse Baratheon
Stannis Baratheon
Meryn Trant
Myrcella Baratheon
I don't know if that helps, but it certainly narrows things down.
Note: I didn't include Lady Stoneheart, because Catelyn was definitely killed, and as many have noted here, seems to be a different entity. Not to mention that she was left off the show altogether.

Another old/new video. But part an interview that I haven't seen before. Why not also put the original date into the description? I think that would be interesting, and can't any reason not to.
I'd prefer a set publishing date for the book instead of it's promotion at this point.
Marillion! Anyone?!

@@Kriegerdammerung nah hes a double agent of Petyrs the whole thing was just a mummers show
@Maester Gryphon yeah I think petyr convinced merillion to take the fall, for gold or for who knows what. But rereading those sansa chapters with a critical eye I'm pretty sure he is a double agent
Marillion is alive. He wore bandages, so you couldn't see his wounds from torture, but in truth, he wore them because he wasn't tortured. He's unharmed and he and Littlefinger had a deal.
But Marillion isn't really dead in the show, just missing in action, so idk if George refered to him.

I got a little misty eyed when George mentioned Roger Zelazny.
The Colony is a good show. It’s like XCOM2 show where you follow resistance members living in ADVENT cities.
Although, I don’t know if I would qualify it is SciFi. Although the best sci-fi show on television right now is the Expanse hands-down.
