  • June 7-11th 1989 the ASP world tour made it's 6th of 26 stops for the 1989 season. Martin Potter had begun the year with a win at the Coldwater Classic in Santa Cruz, then followed up with 3 straight wins, in Australia (Bells and Coke Classic Manley) and the Mauri Pro in Japan. If he could make the semis of this event he would break the record for most consecutive heats won and get a near unbeatable lead in the ratings.
This was the third and final year of the Gotcha Pro at Sandy Beach on the South Shore of Oahu. Tom Curren won the first one and Derek Ho the second. Tom Curren was off the tour at this time and Barton Lynch was the defending world champion. Potter is gunning for his first world title.
This footage was taken from 80's TV (I claim no ownership) and was uploaded strictly for the enjoyment of others who love surfing history like I do. Enjoy!
