I used to be his neighbor. I was there when he won the big one. He was like a Hawaiian prince. I was a young carpenter surfing whenever I was done with my work. He was so humble and just a good neighbor to a regular guy like me. Good memories.
I remember being out @ Kaiser's, Ala moano & north shore in 74-78 when Derick would be in the line up! Although I didn't know him personally, I'd hooted my butt off after watching him pull off sum gnarly late take offs & barrels. Condolences to all of the Ho family. God Bless & RIP bra!
Legends never die they live on in our hearts and minds for eternity may the lord bless his sole and welcome him to take his spot in the lineup above where only the legends can drop in .......much love and respect to the ho family and may peace love and all that is good fill your hearts from santa Cruz nor cal
Wow, I remember seeing a recent interview of the two brothers in Brazil, Michael looked kind of pudgy and Derek looked more cut... and he's the younger brother.. and then he has a heart attack.. So sad. Mark Foo also had like 90% blockage in his arteries when they found him after the Mavericks wipe out. Then Jay Adams has a heart attack and dies while surfing in Mexico.. I don't know... genetics maybe?
Way too young to pass away. I am a beginner at surfing(I am 60 now)and remember his name, way back when I bought Surfing Magazines. May Lord give you Love, Peace and Happiness in Heaven. Rest In Peace, Mr. Ho.
Shocked and saddend by this news.I always looked up to the Ho brothers as two surfers that were inspirational to the sport and love of surfing ,with much admiration.Dereks influence will be felt for ever.✌⭐
DH Was always an inspiration , from watching him surf Ala moana bowl in surf movies at theaters in the late 70s to watching him surf live at the Lacanau pro in the early 90s, then of late blowing minds at pipe this year!! On youtube & instagram. Thanks for the ride , it was rad.❤
I remember as a kid going surf goat Island and Derek paddled out with Johnny boy . They were so cool to us kids letting us cut them off lol. we looked up to Derek so much. Rest in love, Derek Ho

My prayers are with the Ho family, with Michael, Coco, Mason and the rest of the family. I’ve been out of surfing for many many years(health) but have followed the Ho family religiously.
