  • We had a few moments spare in the workshop so decided to make a few short shoot out videos. In this video we chose Celestion's A type and V type speakers.
    This is just a quick comparison video using only a few styles and limited gear. We will be making more in depth videos in the near future, but we hope this gives you all a little taste of the speakers.
    For the cab we used a closed back Zilla Fatbaby 1x12.

    You guys are doing God’s work.
    Dr Decibel at Celestion recommended that I mix these and I never looked back. I mic the V-type when recording though, as the A-type seems to get lost in the mix with my setup.

      They seem to be really quite popular in Fender style amps which is really interesting. Thanks for wastching.

    I use a pair of A-types for a kind of tweedy sounding twin 6V6 amp I have: the low mid emphasis and lack of prominent brightness mean you can really set up an aggressive sound on the amp but keep it sweet and, hate to use the word, but: 'woody'...they don't exactly sound like American speakers but they go really well with American style amps.

    I like the A-type. I also compared it in my Zilla Compact 1x12 with a Creamback H75, a Seventy 80, an Eminence CV 75 and a Jensen Tornado. The A-type did not sound like "WOW! Overwhelming! Mindblowing! In-your-face!" but always just right and very pleasing for a lots of styles. So it got the job. I think it's a great speaker for 1x12 cabs because of the warm low end.

      It sounds like you had some fun there testing speakers. I agree it has never blown me away, but I know a lot of people like it and have had plenty of success with it. Thanks for watching.

      Could you list your aforementioned speakers from edgier to mellower please?
      That would help me make some decisions as I have not experience with any of them but I am interested in those that you own particularly.
      Especially cv75/ creamback H.
      Can't decide which one is more clarious, brighter.
      I also would like to get a 70-80 for the extended highs and a type for full, mellow, lush lows.
      Haven't got any experience with the Tornado either, and how close it is to the classic Jensen spanky timbre.
      Thanks in advance!!!

      This is the exact opposite of my experience with these two. I've had the v in three amps and couldn't dial out the sharp fizzy harsh tones. One A type later and problem solved. Really well balanced and genuinely works well in any amp I've tried it from marshall to fender. I'd highly recommend the A especially for fenders.

    • @ZillaCabs
      @ZillaCabs  4 года назад +5

      I think the A was aimed more at Fender style amps, and I think ti works best in an openback too.

      I just got a used blackstar 30, has two v types and is a 6l6 amp with basically no gain or distortion. I feel the v type cuts well off axis but in front there is a tinny high fizziness to the distortion , I wasn’t sure what it was. I used the same pedals on a blackstar 6l6 studio ten and it sounded way warmer overall. I think the v type speakers are the problem. It’s actually oddly warm sounding too tho but when you’re in the front of the amp it’s so noticeable. Idk, in general being in front of the amp isn’t gonna be the most pleasant place but it definitely has a fizzy ness and makes distortion sound kinda thin. Although that could be the Blackstar’s base gain makin it sounds that way.

    The A type and the Greenback in the same cab would be interesting... The former proving the low end girth and the latter ticking my ears with just right amount of highs.... what do you think guys?

    • @ZillaCabs
      @ZillaCabs  3 года назад +3

      I think we did that shootout but never got round to showing the mix. I will be honest, Im not a huge fan of the A type but I know a lot of players do love it and I can see how mixing it with teh greenback could work really well.

    I like them both and have them both.
    The V30 is perfect in my Laney VC30
    The A Type is a much better speaker than the stock one in my Fender Deluxe 112 plus. Still sounds fender like but more warmth, smoother yet crystal cleans and smoother with overdrive ( fender SS amps can be very fizzy in the overdrive channel)

    You guys just don't get it !!!! Its not how a speaker sounds good in the distortion range. An old Jensen sounds great at that and will translate compression as well.
    Its how a speaker sounds clean able to handle bass, mids and highs with headroom without shrill or harshness. If it passes that test I guarantee it will pass distortion.
    And a FYI. The A Type is trash compared to the V Type. The V Type will surpass even the Greenback. In every genre. Only one better is the Creamback. That's a good one!!

      Comparing speakers with clean and distorted signals demonstrates how it handles different frequencies. The differences between speakers are much more apparent when the amp is overdriven.
