THIS is the GOOD stuff Randy. THIS shows care for the meat. THIS shows it's NOT about the trophy. When I'm done, it's a pink skeleton, and I'm not trying to make a profit at cutting... I'm trying to end up with the most possible weight in meat. NOTHING chaps my hide more, than to watch a video of some knucklehead killing an animal and then looking at the lens and saying.... "Uhhh... guess I'd better go back to camp and get some help." Not ONE bit of effort to get that meat preserved/cooled. THIS type of video you're giving today is the reason you have a solid/loyal subscriber base. It doesn't get any more ethical than to properly care for your meat (whatever means you choose to do so). Nice work Randy/crew.
This, in my mind, is the most important part of the hunt. My parents and grandparents made proficient meat care the "right of passage" for acceptance into their hunting and fishing circles.
I can't thank you enough as a novice hunter for demonstrating this gutless field dressing technique, as well as the various factors and considerations one should keep in mind while doing this work.
Thanks Randy for real hunting videos! This video reflects 2/3s of my experience, in 20 years of hunting. Most of my successful days end - tired, cold, dark- and the works only begun. I’m glad my sons are old enough to start hunting with me last year. Shots feel less melancholy and gutting/ dragging sure feels less depressing with good company! Here in PA we have millions of acres of public ground that allows no camping so it’s all in and out every day. Bear are required to be brought into a check station within 24 hours. One of these days I’ll get some were that I can spike camp there and deal with it in the morning 😁
Great stuff Randy! I've done this method the last 2 bulls I've harvested and even converted my brother to the gutless method. First time he thought I was crazy and swore we wouldn't get as much meat as they way we have always done it. I was fortunate enough to be able to go home (Arizona) last year and harvest a bull under the CHAMP program and he couldn't wait to try it again! Hopefully this video will show guys that it's a great way to harvest as much meat as the traditional way and stay 10x's cleaner for both you and the meat. Can't wait to see what's next.
very nice , glad to see you have a different option other than thowe tiny injecer blades you use to use. I to have perfected my method. I really owe it all to you helping me understand alot of the gutless method. though I do things a bit different like you say there is no wrong or right way . what ever is most comftable for you. It does change the way I hunt now that I am getting older and my old injeries have got me limping and gimping more. Thank you my friend. P.S. we are almost the same age.
Thank you for doing these videos Randy, I have yet to go hunting due to a knee injury, but my son and I will soon have boots on the ground for our first time hunting! Just wish I didn't live in California!
Great videos Randy!! I love watching your channel and have hunted my whole life but still learn things from you. I also got a .308 because of you. I’m gonna take it elk hunting. I’m also originally a NE Montana boy displaced by the military retired living in AZ now and loving elk and deer hunting here.
Randy makes it look so easy. I'm getting faster at it, but drawing tags in Utah kinda sucks. I'm also one of those people who really enjoy the process of breaking the animal down.
Since I watched the first gutless video from randy I now use this technique every time. Just bought the new dts knife hoping to use it on a Colorado elk this year!
Great video Randy, thanks for the refresher. Recieved my DTS in the mail earlier this week that I ordered at the Pacific Northwest Sportsman's show, looks great. Hopefully I'll get to use it in September!!! Good luck hunting this year!!
Thank you. Great time for a refresher. Have been unable to find your knife in stock anywhere. Bummer. Seriously tho, you should come on my Az anterless elk hunt!!😜

Hey randy can you do a video on how to skin an elk to keep the hide for fleshing and tanning. I'm not the type to mount my animal's so I'm not to worried about doing the taxidermist Cape type cut. I just keep the head and do a European style mount. I would like to know where to cut the elk so I can get the whole hide for fleshing and tanning.
My father and I each got a moose in Alaska (same time/place). He started in on his, I started in on mine. We worked with knives ONLY. In five hours' time, they were gutted/skinned/quartered and ready to transport. The only difference was that dad's pile looked nicer (many more years' worth of experience). So, you can process an animal as large as a moose by yourself in that amount of time. The smaller the animal, the less time needed (easier to manage).
So it’s July 2021, I was drawn for a WA Bull tag in an area that has some nice bulls. Even though it’s 102* outside, I’m getting excited. I’ve done this gutless method on deer, but never an elk. No matter what, still looks like work for an elk.
hey Randy have you guys ever had to hunt Spike Bull elk only well the reason I am asking is because that is what me and my Dad are hunting this year for 2020
I stay in South Africa. You are the reason why my new rifle will be a 308 Howa. Love your videos thank you for showing the wins and fails of your hunting trips. When our lockdown in sa is lifted. Get in contact with me we will see how we can assit you in a real African safari hunt. Hu ting in the bushfield is a adventure tha you wil not forget or regret. God bless

Do people ever hang the animal between two trees then do exactly this? I can't seem to find any videos but it seems like it would be an easy way to keep the meat clean after skin is removed.
Just so I'm clear. To do a full body mount or to keep the hide in one piece to sell or whatever, you would have started between the legs, ie up the inside of each leg and spilt it up the belly to connect the 4 leg cuts then peeled the off and around the down the back then lastly the neck. Realizing that the job would be easier if the animal was hanging head down from a stout tree.
What do you do with your deer hooves? When you hunt deer? Is there a way we can get in contact because we use them for our traditional ceremonies and it’s hard to collect them when I hunt solo

People who think you need a saw to dress and Elk or Deer don't know what they're doing. I lost my primary knife one year and had to literally dress a Blacktail with my Leatherman. Dressed and quartered it with that little blade. Luckily I still had my stone!
This is unnecessarily complicated, time consuming, and puts you at greater risk of cutting yourself. Just break down half the critter, then gut the freaking thing enough to get the tenderloin and liver...and the heart if its not destroyed by a bullet....and then move on. I dont have time in grizzly country to prance around and f off larping trying to reinvent the wheel. Get it done and get away from the carcass asap.
Too much wasted time & effort taking the hanging tenderloins that way. I can completely field dress that animal in 2 minutes so the hangers are exposed and easily removed.

Thank you Randy! Going on my first ever elk hunt this year in New Mexico. Hope to put this method to use.
Thanks Randy! This has been the best video I’ve found so far. Having you show all the anatomy landmarks was amazing!
Man! This is such a great tutorial on the gutless method. I'm definitely using this when I get my elk. Great job!

Go north near mccloud. California has some good hunting, great turkey and duck, but good hunting up north.
This was more involved than others I have seen, but to salvage the cape this was an excellent method. Thanks.

Well done...👍🏼👍🏼 great video.
Call me weird but I enjoy the field dressing as much as the hunting.
Me too.
Definitely. The whole time I was imagining the smell of the mountain air and the animal. The sound track was there. Ahhh good times.
me three
I prefer it...makes it easy to find a hunting buddy: you shoot and carry the most weight back, I do the "hard part" :D
I love every part of the hunting experience including the processing.
Best video for this method out there!
Glad you think so!
Randy makes it look so easy. I'm getting faster at it, but drawing tags in Utah kinda sucks. I'm also one of those people who really enjoy the process of breaking the animal down.
Thanks Randy! Hope to use this technique this season 🤟

Well done. The best video on this I’ve seen.
33:25 "This Liver is not well" 🤣 Love it!
Excellent video Randy. I saved it. Hopefully I get a chance to practice this method for my first this September. 😊👍
How long did this process take in real-time? 2 hrs? Really nice video, thanks so much!
It's usually 2 hours when not being filmed.
Good information Randy. Thanks for sharing.
Great video! Looking forward to dusting off my field dressing skills this winter. Nevada antlerless in December, first elk tag ever for me.
Awesome again
Best advice is start with whats easy on A Big Bull
For sure!!!

No elk tag for me this year. Hopefully, I'll get to use this method on a deer though. Fingers crossed.
is it just me or is taking the hide off the most satisfying sound out there
I know right
thanks a bunch for going through the process...
You bet!
Talk about being patient that is a good lesson.
Great job and information!......love this kind of info

Dang man, that back strap is huge!
Randy, so thankful you shared this. How long does it typically take to do this, especially if you are solo hunting? Thanks again for sharing.

What do you leave behind? Do you leave it for the scavengers?

Love it Randy!!
Dang love these videos.
Just wondering the average weight of each hind quarter

Randy, how did you know that the liver was not well?
3:04 what was those red lines from??
AF infrared from a camera helps focus in low light
Hey randy I got to ask what happened to Marcus? We used to hear about him all the time but no recently.
He told Randy’s wife that Randy is “handy” and was subsequently fired.
zach 😂😂
You should show a cow or europeian mount skinning on your next video for elk

@@Fresh_Tracks are they going to be selling replacement blades as well?

Excellent best video on quartering and leaving prove of sex this will help newbies 👊🏻
Would you do a video where you don't cape?
It's getting dark man!!

Way slow
Too dark.
Too much wasted time & effort taking the hanging tenderloins that way. I can completely field dress that animal in 2 minutes so the hangers are exposed and easily removed.

Stupid lol 😆 8😂😂
