I don't know how people do it without ONx. Most useful tool out there for scouting. I use this same method but didn't know you can import points from Google Earth! Great video!
My thoughts exactly, and for roughly $20/month (with promo code ) you're crazy not to have it .... most people typically spend $20 on worse things. Good luck this year !
By far, the best escounting video I've seen yet. Damn. Just damn. Knowing what these things look like on screen is also helpful. Wow. Thanks man. I need to get off my ass and get your course.
Thanks for putting this up Corey. This is so much better than listening to someone describe how they e-scout. Is this really all you do before heading in though, or is this an abbreviated version of your e-scouting? For example, with bedding, do you also look at the topo for benches on those north facing slopes? Do you notice bulls bedding on the top 1/3 of the slope like whitetail? Do you notice bedding locations are wind direction specific? Also, how do you decide what elevation to start at?
The first time I hunted OTC Archery for Elk was in 2006. We didn't have resources like this back then. We leave to go again in 6 days, I feel so much more prepared than I was 13 years ago when we went. We never did find the Elk, we wander around without hearing a bugle and no fresh sign and came home empty handed having just enjoyed a fall Mountain vacation. NOT THIS YEAR! Also, UEH is worth every penny!
Corey, Thanks alot for this video, i had no idea i could do this with OnX maps and i have had it for several months now. I got it when iI got drawn for my first bull elk hunt Unit 6A Arizona. I can't wait to use this neat tip.
How does it work if you're in an area with no service. I know you can download the maps to use off-line, but the GPS function doesn't work right? Great video by the way. Very informative thanks for posting.
What if you have never hunted elk before? Such as myself. We hunt deer, Turkey, and pigs here and SC, and I know what they feed on and how they travel the terrain. We are planning our first ever elk hunt the beginning of September in Colorado. What do I need to look for? We will be happy with any legal elk, but do not have a clue what they eat, and where they bed. Why do they chose a north facing slope? Seems like water is very important in early September since they are such big animals? Any input would be appreciated! Thank you for all of your videos. I have watched about all of them, and they are very informative.
The mere $25 for 1 state/year is awesome tool.... You can use it in other states to track your movement & pinpointing locations for hunting/hiking/fishing/ect... You wont have all the features as the 1 state but, its been an awesome tool....
I've been doing this with Google Earth to hunt WT for years. I still don't know what I'm doing looking for Elk though. Wondering what the reasoning is for the north facing sites? What motivates elk to the north face? And sadly, the OnX maps are unavailable in Canada.
@@andyquinn4985 Nope...in your app at the bottom of left of the screen it will have "map layers." You touch that then you will have "My Layers" and "Layer Library." you will need to go into the layer library and then add it to your library. Scott Vasey in the last few years I have gotten into more elk in their beds within 1/4 mile of a road than I have going in 3-5 miles. So in my experience yes. Personally helped pack out a few killed less than that from a main road. Road hunters drive by and the rest just hike right past on a mission to get in deep. The elk know it !
Awesome video!!! Thank you brother!!! I’ve got an elk hunt in Arizona that I probably shouldn’t have put in for this particular hunt!!! It’s November archery which I’ve never done in November, got any tips for a successful hunt? Thanks again
I have to go about locating elk in a totally different way. The area I hunt in Colorado is mostly private land so access is limited. The elk in this area have a rotation they travel. For instance in 2019 I was hunting up high and the elk would travel through the property I could hunt about once a week. They would spend probably 24 hours there and then move on. The same happens in the lower country where I also hunt. When I was young there were very few elk in this area but now there are quite a few. These elk grew up here and almost anywhere I go in this hunting area I am able to hear the highway and the railroad so the elk can also. The elk are not afraid of a vehicle but if it stops they leave. Not in a rush but they don't hang around. This is probably going to all change though because in 2018 there was a large forest fire that burnt a lot of the public land and after the fire rains washed out access to those public lands. Then a high wind blew down a lot of living trees on other access roads. The forest service has never reopened any of these roads and doesn't seem to be going to. This will change the pattern of rotation of the elk.
I love how you guys take the time to really break down and explain every aspect of everything needed to have success on the hunt.
I’ve watched probably 15 different videos on e-scouting but this was by far the best! Thanks for the great info.

That’s the quick simple e scouting course I needed. Thanks man! Good luck this year.
Man you are the best resource for people getting into elk hunting. Thanks Cory!
And good luck this fall!
Thanks! Good luck to you as well!
I have heard a dozen podcast talking about KML files, this is the first time it has made sense.
Killer quick walk-through of e-scouting process. Thank you, Corey!

Thanks for this video, out of all the videos I've watched this one truly was the most useful to me.
I always learn something from your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for a short into, get right to the important stuff. Nice. Great info, will definitely use it, IF I get drawn.

This was awesome! Thank you for taking the time to demo your methods that have brought you success! Well done! I gotta try it now! 😊
I was able to transfer what you were teaching to base maps and found a water source and a feeding area I had no idea was there

Hi Terry! Yes, actually, the GPS function works perfectly, even when off-line.
It is almost uncanny how well it tracks you & provides everything when offline / no service.....
Up there recently and spoke with ODF guys building fence there, said they been seeing a pack of wolves every week with a large male. Pretty sucky.
WOW. Very informative. You sure put a lot of thought into this. Thanks for educating us on your process.
Definitely just learned a few things. Thanks a lot, great video!
When you say north facing slope. Is that the point of the hill facing north or the downward slope facing north
I’ve been wondering how the location transfer process works, thanks Corey!
Why do elk bed on a north slope? Weather? Planning a solo elk hunt. Thanks

Great question! That's why I created the University of Elk Hunting Online course, you can find out more here: www.elk101.com/onlinecourse/

Is northwest facing or northeast facing better for bedding? Northeast, because it faces away from the heat of the afternoon?
And the timber is usually larger and more dense on the north facing slope because snow lays longer and irrigates it better.
Are you using an older version of Google Earth? The new one doesn't have near the options as the old one.
Hey Corey. What is a true north facing slope? I guess I’m a little confused
A slope that faces north...
Awesome video with great information!
Why do the elk like to bed in North facing areas?
How much does elevation matter for a September hunt?
I've been doing this with Google Earth to hunt WT for years.
I still don't know what I'm doing looking for Elk though.
Wondering what the reasoning is for the north facing sites? What motivates elk to the north face?
And sadly, the OnX maps are unavailable in Canada.
On the new version of Google Earth it doesn’t allow you to pin anything? How are you doing it?
Do you need a certain level of OnX membership for the map layers that includes previous burns? I'm not seeing it for CO with my Elite membership.
No you do not need extra...everything is on there. Search through the map layers section and it will show it. You have to turn it on to apply it.

You're going to have to learn to hunt without the aid of the rut. Good luck.
Why do they bed in north facing slope?
When it is hot, do you like to take a nap in the sun or the shade?
Great content again!
how do you do this on the new goole earth? i can't add a pin.
Dave Anzara I have been trying all night how do you subscribe to google earth?
Thanks Corey!

How would you hunt unit 40 Idaho? I've done some scouting, and escouting
Why do they bed on north facing more?
What is so appealing about burn areas?
Burn areas of 1-5 years provide for some great new undergrowth that big game love to munch on.
Well that spot in the Eagle Caps is going to be full of bowhunters this year! :)
The amount of dust on that keyboard and desk tells me Corey doesn’t often use a desktop. 😂🤘🏹👊💯

Is that $24/yr or mo.?
That is per year. And you can find the 20% discount code in the video description as well.
One of the problems of using Google Earth for this type of planning is the unknown age of the photos/data creating the images.
What does the 29.99 get me that the free version doesn't?
There is a free version??
why north facing areas?
#1 lol. Thank you for sharing.
I live right there haha!
you chose a spot i have scouted. lol. what are the odds. plan c
AaaaaaHaaa, So that's how you do it. I recognize that spot, only trouble is it is in Australia
I wonder who's spot he just highlighted? Oops.....

I go hunting to get away from computers.
Which means you are missing out on a valuable resource that can make you a better hunter. But it's cool, more elk for the rest of us.

Go out and find it. Quit asking “not looking for honey holes but where’s a good place to start?” On Facebook.
