    Comparing three of my precious tools today. Three wonderful microphones from RØDE, each one good for each own purpose. Recorded all together and then divided the sound clips. I used my Soundcraft Notepad 12fx with my gain knobs at 12 o’clock for all the mics and my DAW is Cubase. I didn’t do any post processing. I only brought up the gain when needed and for some reason it was always +2db for the NT1 and +4db for the NT1000.
    I wish this review helped some of you decide, although it’s most of the times hard to tell the difference between these mics.

    NT1a : More "processed-like" color, and as if had an additional air. Sounds good for a while, but for a longer time sometimes tend to harsh.
    NT1 : Plain. Sound as it is. Very minimal color. Less harsh. Will need some EQ and saturation later.
    NT1000 : Natural. Had some little "saturation" in the mid area. More vintage sound. Not harsh at all.
    If i had to choose one, I'll choose NT1000. And also as a user of NT1000 for 3 years, it never disappoint. Very recommended 👍

      Very well said! I agree in all your points. I think that after this time passed I would also go for the NT1000. Although I found the NT1 very useful for studio work and the NT1-a very good for quick things that I don’t want to edit too much and of course for its exceptional value for money rate. I would say only “saturated highs” instead of “processed like sound”. Thank you very very much for watching and commenting. Greetings from Greece!

      Thank you for watching and commenting. Of course I mic much closer too, but in this case I put them in a longer distance so as to minimize the sound difference created by their position. So, let’s say I created a triangle with a very small base (distance between the microphones) and very long sides (distance between me and the microphones). Greetings from Greece!

    First off, thank you for the comparison video. I enjoyed your singing too. I recently bought an NT1. I don’t like the piercing, exaggerated sibilance of the NT1-A. The NT1000 sounds as though it is in the middle of the two profiles. It’s more open on the top end than the NT1, but not harsh or hyped like he NT1-A. However, I am very, very pleased with the NT1, and it does suit my voice very well.

    • @PetrosAntoniouMusic

      Thank you very very much for watching and for commenting. I seem to grab the NT1000 most of the times. Especially when I don’t want to edit in post. I use the NT1 when I record my original stuff and then shape the sound as needed. I like the NT1a on the “soundhole” side of an acoustic and also at about 10-15cm in front of a bass amp. I agree about the highs of the NT1a, but for the price it’s a pretty good mic. Greetings from Greece.

    Many thanks for taking the time to do this. Nice singing by the way! I'd like to be able to say that this was revelatory, but the differences, if any, between the mics are so subtle that frankly none of them would rescue a crap song and singer and all of them would do justice to a good song and singer.

    • @PetrosAntoniouMusic
      @PetrosAntoniouMusic  3 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching my video and for your comment! It’s true that there are not SO big differences between the microphones (just a bump in the higher frequencies in both the NT1a and the NT1000). Of course a better microphone will bring to the listener both the best and the worst parts of someone’s singing. Some of the microphones though, will naturally eq a voice in a positive or negative way. That’s why many singers have their “loved” mics that they use all the time. Great review ❤️ the nt1000 sound objective and soft, volume and gain are not a problem in the recording and on the mix, but his source is soft. Any way the difference is so gentle that I would live with any of them

    NT1 and NT1000 are very nice, hard to judge. NT1a sounds not close as good. But all of them are pretty noiseless.

    • @PetrosAntoniouMusic
      @PetrosAntoniouMusic  9 месяцев назад

      I agree with the noiseless part. As for their sound, it's really subjective. There were songs where the NT1a fitted perfectly and added a nice sparkle to some vocals and was used without any post EQing at all. Greetings from Greece!

      @@PetrosAntoniouMusic Yepp! Someday I give the NT1 or 1000 a try. Had some superlownoise KingBee V1, mighty mics but it was to hard to look at them.
      I've still got a 26 years old Superlux CMH 8C in the slightly better t.bone SC950 version with spider as daily. You won't find any information of the SC950 anymore in the www.
      Some PreEQ and a soft gate in the SoundDesk app, and I realy 'love' it for it's natural sound and overall performance in cardoid and omni. In this case 14 dB noisefloor is a small trade off, but no problem at all in real life.

    Using good audio equipment and headphones you can certainly tell the difference. I find the NT1a is great for acoustic instruments and the NT1 and NT1000 are great for vocals. As you say If I could only have one it would be the NT1 as you can make that microphone sound close to the others with post processing.

      You're surrounded by salt water and I'm surrounded by fresh water. And you have all the good food :) 🙂
      I just ordered the NT-1 and will be ordering the NT-1000 soon. I loved the sound of your guitar on the 1000. To me, the bass comes out better/accurate.
      My brother plays acoustic and I just recorded him covering James Taylor, "Fire and Rain" -- with only my cameras built in microphone. Can't wait to record him with the new Rode Microphones. Here's the video of my brother playing, please forgive the background noise, Mom's cooking in the kitchen with my other brother. This was just to check out what the camera (Sony A7R5) was capable of. The mic in the camera was not good with his singing voice at all. Made his voice sound like he was congested. I wasn't expecting great results with it. I just need those good microphones.

      Thank you for watching and commenting. If you don’t have an audio interface, I would recommend the 5th gen as you can plug it directly in your computer and record. If you own an audio interface, I think that the nt1 kit would be ideal, as it is somehow more “fast” than the nt1000. The nt1a is also a good choice but I think the nt1 is overall a better mic. Thank you for watching. As I’m saying in another comment, the NT1 & NT1a seem to be tighter and faster in their responses. So for fast vocals I would choose one of these two. Note that the NT1a will give you some more high frequencies, so if your voice needs them take this one. The NT1 is more neutral. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t recommend you the NT1000 for your kind of music. Greetings from Greece!!!

      Καλημέρα από Ελλάδα φίλε! Με το NT1 θα μπορέσεις να γράψεις πιο flat και μετά να κάνεις ότι επεξεργασία θέλεις. Παράλληλα το διάφραγμα του θα είναι πιο καθαρό και αρθρωμένο στα γρήγορα περάσματα. Το NT1a πιστεύω ότι ίσως είναι λίγο πρίμο για το μπουζούκι που ήδη έχει πολλά πρίμα. Το ΝΤ1000 από την άλλη θα σου δώσει έναν ήχο «σαλονιού», αλλά φοβάμαι μήπως σου λασπώσει λίγο τα γρήγορα περάσματα. Γενικά πάντως, όπως άκουσες, οι διάφορες δεν είναι τεράστιες. Στην ουσία μπορείς να μιμηθείς τις διάφορες τους με EQing. Για το μπουζούκι πάντως νομίζω ότι θα επέλεγα το ΝΤ1. Χαιρετίσματα από Ελλάδα!

    If you take away the high frequency boost of the NT1000 with an EQ, will it sound more like the NT1?

      Hello Dear Friend! If you take the high boost off, they will for sure sound very similar, but the NT1 is much more neutral. The NT1000 has a specific “vintage” character which is difficult to describe to you if you don’t listen to the mic for yourself. I’ll try to do a comparison with the high roll off for the NT1000. After one year of having them both, I nearly always use the NT1 for recordings and the NT1000 for live videos etc. Thank you for watching! Greetings from Greece!!!

      Hello Dear Friend! Unfortunately, I’m going to disappoint you… Although the AT2020 is a very popular mic among home studio owners, there is a difference in the sound, compared to the NT1A or the other Rode mics. There is for sure more presence, more detail and less self noise in the Røde mics. If the budget is tight, I would recommend to take a listen to other cheap mics, too if you want. For example the Rode M3 which is a multipurpose mic that can be handy in many situations, the t-bone SC400 and SC450, the BEHRINGER b2 pro, or the studio projects B1x. Of course you CAN get good sounds from the at2020 and it can give you a nice and clean recording, but there are reasons why these mics are more expensive. I hope I helped a little bit. Thank you for watching! Greetings from Greece!!!

I do not understand NT1, when I am listening to it it sound some kind of dull or veiled.... like that its flat curve would be made someway that destroys the presence of the sound..... I do not know...... I do not feel the sound to be "real" but somewhat artificial :(
