Sonderkommando Elbe was a Luftwaffe task force that planned to take down Allied planes by ramming their aircraft into them, mid-air.
While the pilots planned to parachute out of their planes, the chances of returning home were slim. To achieve their aim, they flew stripped down Messerschmitt Bf 109's that were fast and agile. A story of bravery and desperation that still fascinates today.

f*cking legend
They're Basically the Gigachads of Kamikaze
not to mention moving targets
because of the anti aircraft fire
To be fair the turrets on the bombers do not compare to warships that are giant floating gun platforms covering each other and filling the sky with more flak and lead in one encounter than a B-17 gunner would do in their entire service. Way more difficult to successfully approach even an isolated ship covered in AAA.
Yeah I know 😄

Actually, the original Japanese kamikaze tactic was to ram the bombers

Great depiction with a minor correction-at this stage in the war, fuel was so tight that the Me-262s did not taxi to the runway for takeoff. Instead they were towed into position, typically using kettenkrads.
Yes, and what I read was that fighter engines were warmed up by fire from a bonfire lit up under the engine, thus saving fuel.
Yep, and that was one other major advantage the Me-262s had over piston aircraft. Jets (turbine engines in general) can run on lower-quality fuel, while piston-driven internal combustion engines needed specific and high-quality fuel.
@@AJKecsk yep, they need high octane fuel to power the piston engines. Jets on the other hand can run on lower quality fuel.
Also a minor correction:
The ME-262s & Bf109s both would have had the hakenkreuz (swastika) on their tails. Minor oversight, but you’ll see them in just about every historical photograph
That ìm sure wouldnt have been on every Occasion for quick take off I dont think so would have taken too long
I don't understand the title but i know the video won't disappoint me
@@Jack-zw5qn It's kinda like it, but the primary difference is in the idea that in Kamikaze you were to sacrifice yourself to the god emperor, but in Sonderkommando Elbe's case, emphasis was put into trying to come out of it alive.
@@mysteriousgadget7879 That was the idea, but it ultimately failed due to things like plane malfunctions, fuel leakages and being shot down by Allied fighters

Hitler wanted the pilots returned if possible, I should say the luftwaffe didn't want to lose valuable pilots to a now pointless war
The fact that in the begin he said "over a thousand bombers" shows how strong American production was.
Turn the sky to silver shimmering light, make the horizon disappear, the sky is covered in white trails our men are ready to bring them fear, 10,000 men take to the sky, make it rain at deadly rain, rain of steel to make their Nation disappear our victory so near, so keep the bombers coming and volunteer.
I have the lyrics but I have no idea about the song, it was part of my uncle's collection and it's meant for the piano.
@Please Change My Name RUclips Thats not even true. B17s had a higher survival rate then most other bombers and could take a pretty decent pounding. So its more like "Quantity _and_ quality"
@Please Change My Name RUclips lots of american stuff are better than german stuff. Like plane or tank for exemple
@@salviat1705 It was better mostly because Americans could afford to run a truly monstrous logistics chain of replacement parts and machines from the US to Germany, while also making sure that everything they sent across the ocean was thoroughly tested from drawing board to deployment.
Lots of others factors explain why he was better to be on a sherman than beeing in a tiger for exemple. And also the sherman is a lots better than a panther/pz4/tiger

Surprisingly, I know about this. There was a TV show called Dogfights, it was on History Channel, and it lasted 2 seasons. In season two, there was an episode called, "The Luftwaffe's Deadliest Mission", and it was about the Sonderkommando Elbe. It was pure desperation at that point. Turns out, one of the pilots interviewed, a German pilot named Klaus Hans, told why he joined the Sonderkommando Elbe. He said, "I saw the results of the allied bombing. There were dead women, dead children, and dead elderly, I had to do something."
That quote has stuck with me, showing that the Allies were also monsters.
I never been this early. Last time i was this early the allies still hold the maginot line.

To say the Luftwaffe (Or at least, the remains of it after Bodenplatte) is desperate is a huge understatement because on the same week they were launching "Mistels" which was basically Fw-190s throwing Ju-88s as a glidebomb on Remagen bridge as a last-ditch attempt on halting the Allied Forces' advance on Berlin.

Germany: Drive straight into Bombers!

He has done it a few times before
I don't know if kamikaze is the right word. The Japanese pilots NEVER intended on surviving. Their planes where even packed full of so much explosive that it slowed them down, the Sonderkommado Elbe didn't do that. Plus there limited training was primarily on how to hit the bombers in a way as to then fall out of theirs. The idea was to survive and do it again, theoretically.
Also, Yarnhub. Please do a follow up video on the Sacktime B-24 Liberator. That planes story is far from over after being hit and I feel would make an incredible video.
Considering that the term simply means "Divine Wind," I'm not sure it's wrong to use it to describe this doctrine. Kamikaze pilots sometimes - rarely, though - managed to survive. And even here, the chances of survival were relatively low. The main difference, though, is that the Japanese typically used the tactic against ships, which made bailing practically impossible; the craft would be below the minimum safe height for parachuting. Plus, if after all that, the pilot did survive, he would likely be lost at sea or captured by Allies.
Pilot : Sir aren't kamikaze used for attack ship ?
Officer : well.. Its a AIRSHIP !
Every video just gets better and better! Keep up the absolutely great work

“It’s April 7th 1945 and 1000 B-17s and B-24s are in the air over Germany” Ok let’s take a moment to reflect on that. The wingspan of a B-17 is 103 feet, about 32 meters and a B-24 is 110’ or 34m so lined up tip to tip those planes would form a line about 3.3 kilometers wide!
Each of those planes had a 10 man crew so there were 10 thousand men flying through the air over Germany, almost 7 miles above the ground. This truly was a battlefield unlike any that had come before or since.
You deserve a million subs for what you do. Love your content keep it up.

Great work, and glad you were able to get a sponsorship from Call of War!
Great video as always! I really like your animations. The models are a bit low quality and movement a little jerky at times, but you narrate with such enthusiasm that I get really immersed.
I would like to point out one historical inaccuracy though. At 4:36 you said "from the mustang's eight heavy machine guns." I found this a little weird as most P-51's only had six. Now Mustangs were sometimes fitted with extra gun pods, but this was a very rare occurrence and were used exclusively for ground attack missions. There was a P-51 variant, the A-36, which did have eight machine guns but half of them were .30cals and it was also used primarily for ground attack roles.
Now I'm not trying to bash on you, I enjoy your content very much. It was probably just a slip of the tongue that got missed in editing. Anyway keep up the quality content, and I look forward to your next video.
