  • This Terry's Model Rod Shop video goes into the basic of how the base coat of paint effects the final color topcoat.
This is especially true with candy's (transparent tinted paint) but it also holds true with regular colors as well,(example such as bright yellow will be a darker mustard color if you use a darker base coat)
In this video i show some spoons i painted with different base colors, primer gray, white, silver, gold and dark cherry red metallic which i then top coated with dupli-color metal cast red (which is basically a transparent red)and you will see the difference in the final color by which base color i used!
Also as a bonus i show a few models which were painted with a gold base and topped with a transparent brown used for flowers.
The 37 ford was built by my wife and painted with 10 or so coats of brown to give it a nice candy root beer color, i built the hearse and used the same brown but only applied 3 or 4 coats and it gives it a nice warm wood look!

THANK YOU. I just repainted the front bumper of my car and used a grey primer/sealer (like the last spoon option) underneath my top base coat of Venetian red (metallic). I ended up not being able to blend it to the quarter panels because the bumper was slightly darker than the rest of the car... Now I know why!! Very helpful, thanks

I have no idea what base color to use cuz I don't know what dirtbag Brown is for one and for two I would just use to to the spoon test like I did in my video till you get the color you like

Said thing is I heard you shouldn't put lacquer solvent paint over other acylic enamel spray paints? I have a gallon of acylic white as a base also.
I think you can put some spray paint (krylon maybe) over the lacquer paint, but not the other way around.

i would recommend the spoon test, paint it over gold, silver, and gray and see which one you like best

May I ask which gold paint you used for the base coat on the middle spoon?

That's a good idea. Interesting how base coat affects top coat for different tones.

I'm a customizer and I usually paint action figures. But I used acrylic paints, not spray paints. So I'm wondering if it will affect the plastic different. Thx

@@roberthall3751 I have used gold under transparent red for a candy lookmy advice to you is get some plastic spoons and spray the paint starting with the primer that you're going to use to see what it looks like because pagan gold might have too much of something in it that makes the red look orange or who knows so test test test
