looks good... we have deadly spiders, centipedes, snakes and scorpions that come out at night. Maybe you should have mounted it on the inside of the coop?

We could use one of these. Right now we just leave the coop open but we have 3 dogs that run the property at night to keep predators away. Would be nice to have an automatic door on our new coop build though. :)

FYI. I’ve seen on some other channel s that are in very cold areas that the string sometimes gets wet and freeze’s during the winter and can brake. I’ve also seen some people mount it inside the coop.

my chicken gate has a rope that goes up to the back deck, I hook the rope into the groove between the railing 2x6's. but would love the "mindless" version
I am also a nonreader of most directions also. Although I do recall a few times that had I read the directions I would not have had to be involved in a do over. Another homesteader (Sow the Land) Jason has one that swings a door horizontally.

There is a known issue with this style of auto door that pops up when the string gets wet then temps drop below freezing before it can dry back out where the string can freeze on the spool stopping the door from working. A hair dryer or heat gun held away should be able to thaw the spool but want to watch out for overheating and melting of the plastic if you use the heat gun.
does the lock work well when dirt is built under the door?

Don't forget to install bulb so when it's getting dark especially.during winter in the house. So they get some form of heat from the bulb..or use hurricane light every night winter time.

You can buy cheap solar lights to put on the chicken house. That way you will know if there is wild animals are in the pin area. I had trouble with racoons and them lights help out a lot . Try it . The sun will keep the light charge up and there is so many shapes of lights and etc

@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving how about thinking about your family who were living in that home with winter coats on. the weather is nice now finish the house so they can live comfortable. you started out good than got comfortable just the way it was smh. grab the camera go ahead show us what the inside looks like again.
@@jemstudio I think his house is fully insulated and the roof is on. Only missing siding and some inside sheeting. But looks really comfy now.
@@sylhunt8230 its missing alot and i sure wouldn't have my wife and kids living in those conditions. alot of time has passed and that house should be almost done already. he should be taking advantage now that the weather is good to finish up so his kids don't have to walk around the house in coats again . you can play around outside later martin but give use some good building content. at least finish the inside up so the family is comfortable before winter hits again.

"BEST DIY Chicken Door" implies that design/component selection is DIY...which is why most people come here...they expect a real DIY design. If they’re all “DIY” because they all require install, then the label has no meaning anymore. Anyhow I regret making a negative comment. This was a great video with lots of helpful details for anyone who wants to install an out-of-the-box option. I’m going to check out some of your other videos and see what else I can learn.

If you use visqueen plastic as a moisture barrier between drywall and framing you will be very sorry. Mildew will form and the dry wall will turn black all you need if the vapor passing house wrap you already have. I'm a builder and have seen the results of such a horrendous mistake

Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living um ok I guess that’s true. You could pay someone to do the same job and then it’s not diy. But I’ve never seen anyone pay someone to install one of these doors. That would be silly because they are so easy to do. So it’s different. When I think of a diy chicken coop door it’s a door, electronics, switch and motor you designed and built yourself. This video is just an installation video. Neither of us are technically wrong, just in my opinion this isn’t diy. Search diy chicken door. They are all homemade doors
