  • In this classic model kit review, I am looking at the Hobby Craft 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109C (kit no. HC1518). In this video, we'll be looking at the instructions, the surface detailing, the transparencies, the decals, potential problem areas to watch out for, and finally, I'll be giving my conclusions. Though this kit has been surpassed in accuracy and detail by kits from Classic Airframes, Modelsvit, and AMG, is it still worth building? Let's find out together!

Turned out nice, Jon! Nice subtle weathering. Academy bought many Hobbycraft molds, so you pay a bit more if you buy the Academy boxings

Thanks, Drew! I'm not sure if Academy released the early HobbyCraft 109s. I have built the Academy/HobbyCraft 109G6 and K4. I think the improved directions and decals probably justify the price increase. Cheers!

Great video and thanks for sharing. In the past, to ensure a good wing root fit, I used lengths of sprue to force the fuselage sides apart. Now I use Jon’s method of gluing the upper wings to the fuselage first. Works perfectly every time!

You're welcome! I'm glad to hear that gluing the upper wings to the fuselage first is working well for you. I appreciate the feedback. Cheers!

I haven't tried this method yet but wouldn't it be awkward trying to glue the lower wing in place when it does not line up precisely because the upper locator pins/holes are slightly more inboard than the corresponding pins/holes on the lower wing? Just wondering if there is a trick to this before I attempt it. I also slightly worry about getting the upper wing properly lined up using a butt join. Would love a video demonstrating this whole process, keep up the good work.

    • @jonsmodelkitreview4624
      @jonsmodelkitreview4624  Месяц назад +1

@frederickwarren2495 The butt join can be a little tricky at times, and having three hands would make it easier 🙂. For the lower wing, I start at the center section, sometimes letting that completely dry before moving outward toward the wingtips. That is a good suggestion for a video!

These older Hobby Craft kits are very under-rated. No extra fluff, but fit, finish and marking very sufficient. Actually the P36 series too. Thanks for making great comments on this old fella. 😂

Hi Jon. I've seen those other Bf 109C kits (and other kits of early Bf 109 types) and while nice, they are far from cheap for what you get in 1/48.
The Hobby Craft kit looks right and I think the Jumo/chin radiator/stub-less exhaust captures the early Bf 109 vibe well. Nice work sir. (What fun decals can be!🙂)

Really nice build. Your channel is criminally underrated and you're a very skilled modeler.
Also, I can never seem to get the color right for the interior of Luftwaffe planes and their wheel wells. I to go with too much grey and not enough green.

Good morning MKR team from Az!
Again Jon, very nice finish. Can't tell it's not a Tamiya!
Jon, nice up grades. I like the wing lights. And the guns in the cowling troughs. The "dead ended" gun troughs are noticeable. The muzzles sticking out of the hood are a 109 "thing" Very noticeable.
Where did you get the gun barrels?
Thanks for the decal info. I would have missed it! The instruction sheets in many kits have an "unclear" passage or two.
Another kit I have in stash. I'm a 109 fan. Still building my 1/48 Bf-Me 109 stash. And Jon, ya not be helping. "OOOHHHH, I don't have that one, or that one and I need that one too...." At least ya show us they can all be built into fine looking kits with a little extra elbow grease. And tips from MKR!!
Still trying to find a Prototype 109 1/48 kit at a reasonable price. The prototype had a Rolls Royce Kestrel engine and the cowling was quite different as the Kestrel was mounted "right" side up.
My first kit was the old Monogram 1/48 Me-109 kit. Still missing from my stash. My father had just taken me to see "The Battle of Britain" in 1969. I was all of 8 years old. Bought at the general store in the four corner town we lived in. Walmart before there was Walmart and a post office as well! If I remember right the price was 99 cents!
Jon, thanks for the inspiration, it really helps right now!!
Ya'll have a good one, take care, and............................

Good day George, If the part is the same sight, I have the remains of an Arii 109 G kit. I'll look and see if I still have the gun sight. Problem is I can't remember where I stashed the kit remains.
The kit was built as a crash on display as was done during the war in Britain for bond drives. So, it's "missing" a bunch of parts.

I'm sorry to hear that! It should be a relatively easy scratch build part. You can make the reflector glass from plastic packaging. The body can be made from any piece of plastic. Just a thought. Good luck with it!

Good day George. If you have not seen Jon's plastic packaging tip in action, it works very well.
I've been watching some Japanese modelers who carve such detail from sprue. A couple of pictures and a chunk of spure and off ya go.

    Most excellent build, Jon.
I have never gotten past the first stage with this kit.
You didn’t shave out the insides of the fuselage halves? I never liked the fit I was getting.
Straight out of the box parts?
If you did, I am doing something terribly wrong.
I have really wanted to get at least one of these on a shelf.
    Thanks, Jon

Nah, Jon, I think it’s on my part really.
      I’m not getting assembly right.
Build the interior tub first and place into the fuselage halves?
The top of the instrument panel sets on the front edge and the bottom sets back into the cowling?
      That’s the best way forward?
I appreciate the help by the way.
These seats in this 109 series are far superior in my view than any of the Hasegawa 109’s. I scoop these up any I see them at shows.

    • @jonsmodelkitreview4624
      @jonsmodelkitreview4624  Месяц назад +1

@cellardwellerproductions5125 If you build the cockpit tub first and set the instrument panel into place from the top, there are notches under the instrument panel's upper section that match up with the first notch in the cockpit walls. If everything is lined up properly, then the face of the instrument panel will be flush with the front cowling. I hope that helps.

One trick I learned from the Revelle model club hand book for creating Battle damage like bullets and flack is to use a ball bit on your dremel tool to thin the area from the inside being careful the not go totally through , you thin from the inside to the out so not to change seams and rivet. On inside paint it bright silver then push it through with a pin or nail depending on the size damage you desire and boom you got a beautiful bullet hole in your wing!

Hey Jon, great looking build out as always. I especially like the extra special " Jon's models Finish", the camo scheme is awesome.. Also the part about " not heavy parts kit" is good, some of these kits are way to expensive and overly parts heavy for sure like Eduard and ICM. Of course Eduard has the multiple variety builds. And ICM has awesome details, however $150.00 for a medium bomber is a bit high. Of course I'm just aviation and not responsible for an entire model company. What's next and how is the P-47 coming along. Cheers Bob

Thanks, Bob! I'm getting closer to paint on the P-47 builds. The P-47s all seem to have difficult-to-paint schemes - my nemesis!
I agree about current kit prices. There's no denying that they are masterpieces, but they can be challenging and time-consuming to build. Now that I think about it, I have several nice twins in the stash that would be fun to review...
