My name is Marc Guidry. I grew up in the 60s in Houma Louisiana. Every year we had an airshow at the local airport. There was a father son flying team who flew the F8-F Bearcats. They were JWBill Fornof, and JW Corkey Fornof. Needless to say, I fell in love with the bearcat. Oh and if you like James Bonds movies, you've seen Corkey Fornof fly a Bee Dee 5 jet thought it aircraft hanger.

I'm a huge Bearcat fan but have never been fortunate to see one fly in person. The Fornofs were excellent pilots. Appreciate you providing some feedback and your experience. Cheers, Chad.

I was surprised to see this model build! I thought Hobby Craft was a thing of the past. When I lived in South Korea (1986-89), I did some research work for one the Hobby Craft kits which originated there. Be envious; I often went to Tongdaemun (East Gate) in downtown Seoul to the factory stores! I would buy hundreds of SKorean kits and stuff them into my living space on base. I still have a few of those kits in my stash. Because my command of Korean was so good, I convinced my Korean officer counterpart to go with me to the Academy prototype mold shop just outside of Seoul. At the time, they were refining the molds for the 1/48 F-111. I clearly recall their use of EDM because the machine was cutting a mold part at the time. In the background, old "ajumas" were laboriously hand polishing the molds. Ajuma is the Korean word that describes either a married or an older woman who is not a grandmother. Yes, I had a marvelous time in Korea! Next time we are together, I'll tell you a couple of stories. You know one of the very few, if not the only, American officer who has ever stepped foot on north Korean soil! We'll discount those brave guys who go infiltrator hunting in the DMZ.

Big fan of Mr. Leroy Grumman. Personally pick the F8F Bearcat for it’s perfect design. Well engineered Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp American twin-row, 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial aircraft engine with a displacement of 2,800 cu in (46 L), and is part of the long-lived Wasp family of engines. The fuselage was the icing on the cake that had wrapped itself around the wasp. Outstanding twin radial Fighter.

My first model of the bear cat was a solid wood model with metal detail parts. It did have a plastic prop. It had a highly detailed landing gear actually had the elbow bend so you could either build on the gr or partially retracted. There is a scale functioning rc landing gear set available in a couple scale sizes. I got to se a ral one at a local air show years ago. It was quite impressive starting up and taking off. It flew with a Corsair over the field.
A sight called Greg’s has a ver detailed discussion on how it was conceived and what was done to make its performance. Ironically it was speed limited in turns by G loading on the wings. Originally the outer wing panels were to break off if g load was exceeded but unequal separation was an issue so Grumman re designed he wing without the b
Teak away feature. It was nearly ribitless construction similar to the Corsair. The one I saw was indeed nearly smooth. I flew my big Corsair with guy who had he same scale size bear cat. We did scale flying things with another guy that had. Zero. We finally stopped after a very near miss mid air. I flew the Corsair for 13 rc. A big bearcat was the next to be built but age caught up with me and I have had to leave model building as I cab no longer see well enough. I still get out to watch and see what I can. Up close is ok but distance is out of sight. LOL. Nice model. I like your mods.
    Byron

Thanks for all the great details, Byron. The Bearcat has long been a favorite of mine. As you indicate, the landing gear itself is a thing of beauty in the way that it operates/retracts to fit that long gear into a small space. I bet it was a lot of fun to fly. I built the old Top Flite Bearcat many many years ago but never got around to putting an engine in it and flying it. As you say, time catches up to us so I too left the RC world behind and now just enjoy building at the bench. Thank you again for taking the time to provide a great number of insights. Cheers - Chad

Thanks! On the matte, I've been using AK's Ultra Flat Matte but sometimes, it's a bit too flat. I still experiment with other flats. I have heard that Tamiya Spray Lacquer flat, decanted and sprayed through the airbrush is really nice as well but haven't tried that yet.
