Yes, maybe even some pseudo-random complexity like camouflage. I've often wanted something like that on set when using ultra bounce and feeling the same way about it that Nicholas describes here.
@@althenimble I don't think you'll notice any random pattern from a camo bounce. Perhaps use a projection gobo setup through a scrim? I haven't tried before.
Yes! that would be the ideal! It would make them much more expensive to make. Often there will be some sort of thin curtain built in to the set and that diffuses the transistion between the colours.
Maybe, but I’ve noticed that the horizon doesn’t softly transition between sky and ground. So really, I think the design they have now is MORE realistic than that.
Also.. I know it would get defused to all holy hell.. but I wonder what would happen if you put some random black rectangles, either to one side.. or in the middle.. like a backlit skyline.. what effect that would have on breaking it up a bit..
Tremendous intro. I love when cinematography/video channels actually weave some kind of narrative style into their reviews or breakdowns in that way. Stuff like that is often just as educational as the full videos because I get to see some techniques to use when you're both in front of and behind the camera at the same time haha.
This is great, I have always enjoyed using natural bounces in nature. Spots of sunlight hitting foliage or a brown tree bark. This is a very smart product that delivers a much needed tool for controlling lighting while also staying realistic
To quote Andy Bernard aka The Nard Dog; "Dude, you are so money. But you dot even know it. But you do." This is flow state kind of stuff. So visually pleasing. Thanks for dropping the knowledge.
That intro is crazy, respect the effort! Also great breakdown, I actually do like how the bluff bounce adds that subtle change in colour to the room or objects. 👌🏻
It's always a good day when I see Lewis Potts uploaded a new video. :) Seriously dude, thanks so much for making these videos and putting so much effort into them! This is the only cinematography channel on RUclips that I find genuinely inspiring instead of just giving me gear acquisition syndrome (or giving super basic advice).
It has its place. It works as a solid out of focus backdrop in windows. I think the harsh blue reflections on objects is completely unrealistic and the white bounce looks so much better. However, in the shot of the MacBook at 4:53, the blue reflection looks really nice. Not a replacement, just another tool. Cool to know it's out there.
Agreed! I wonder how blue the actual sky really gets in a direct comparison with reflections.. It feels like the effect doesn't really reflect what would be natural if it were just the blue sky out there. After filming a lot of objects through the years that must have reflected the blue sky in the background, I cant say that what I see with the blue reflection in this video seems relatable to the real world.
I really love the natural skin tone (even if it's just a minor touch). One personal note is the harsh line between the white and blue on the reflections (such as the cabinet) seeming a bit unnatural to me. Maybe V2 can almost have an ombre shift between the two colors. Sweet vid!
Yep... This v1 is a great concept. However, I agree if it was ombre in a variety of colors it'd be a hit, and make a ton of sense for a lot of practical productions.
I literally just got my rag delivered yesterday! I went with Amazonia cause if the climate I’ll be shooting in the next few months. So excited to have this tool in my “go-to” kit
The king is back! I’ve always wanted to try one of these. The reflections in objects around the room, and when you actually see it a little bit out the window are cool. Sick shades bro.
Amazing how clearly it bounces onto the objects but the skin absorbs 95% of it. Like the other comments have said I bet it would be better if the colors had a gradient to them 🔥
Man, Thanks for this! I found these bounces the exact same way. I was curious to see exactly what you showed! the reflections of the bounce was something great I didn't even consider. Glad you reached out and got to check them out.
Your comedic timing is on point my dude! Idky, but I died when you clapped with the prospective transition and then immediately cut mid explanation. As always, I love your content, and wisdom/knowledge along with the cherry on top with your deadpan humor!
Very cool product. I could see how it could be used outside a window with/without curtains. And you use the colored fabric to block nearby buildings/houses from being seen through the window. Instead, there is the blue from the Bluffbounce screen giving the impression of a sky when the location is across the street from other houses or in the city. Plus, as mentioned, the colors from the screen bouncing off of objects in the foreground. A great way of adding mood or depth to the shot.
Excellent product. I was taking photos of a person with a sunset behind me and loved the look of the colours in the eye's and refractions. Always figured a big bounce with the same pricipals would be cool. It would be nice to see if they could have some sort of fade so it's not just a hard line. Would make it look even more natural.
The hard cut-off between different colours makes this sort of a dealbreaker. The transition from one colour to the next on that fabric should be graceful and diffused rather than a hard dividing line.
I feel like putting your source through 4x4 gel frame that has some ctb and straw layed out in the same manner as the bounce would work better, better color, more subtle reflections. for a sun bounce seems cool though.
Great video. These peaked my interest when I seen them a few weeks back. I really like the reflection colours. In a similar vein for soft box's etc, I was looking at the Brokeh lighting system. Subtle difference to flat white but very pleasing on skin from the looks of it.
I saw something similar called Brokeh, same concept but with a bit more of random patterns to it. Would be interested in seeing a video looking into that system too, especially their facial series.
Interesting with some logic but not sure it makes sense in reality. Quite specific result but great that people are trying new things. I know using flags and scrim is what we are supposed to do but i have never really understood why we dont have graduated reflectors or graduated diffusion. Think Deakins cove light and creating a softer fall off would be so easy. I know placing flags or extra diffusion is more controllable but its so easy to end up with a spaghetti of stands and arms. Meanwhile my current favourite thing to do is use a mirror as a bounce as if its a window source. So often a room might seem dead or for practical reason the window is in the wrong place. I dont mean mirrored glass, more the plastic light and cheap ones. I know its not exactly news but doing that with some coloured filter in front or few branches or cucoloris to break things up often helps create a more lived in set of reflections and the highlights have a sharpness that creates some interesting texture. So many ways to do it and usually so little time. Thx as always
at first it doesn't look like much keying but it's a crazy cool detail when added as a kicker and on surfaces! I love it. Also, I love your clap transition haha!!
yeah, ultrabounce really has too much white in it. I found it ok for commercial or music videos, but when we were shooting a shortfilm with it I started to look for some other ways to bounce light. Especially sun on exterior shoots. So exept this one and ultrabounce, what other bounces do you use?
Muslin is always good too. some people I work with just don’t wash some of their ultrabounces, and all the layers of dust and sand take that bright sting out of it, which works well
I like what it's doing to the overall color of the image. Not a huge fan of the reflections on objects, but I could see it being useful in subtle ways.
Great idea, great video. Do you have any frame recommendations at all please? Would ideally like a modular design which can be made up to different sizes but choice seems pretty crap in the UK. 👀
Another excellent video from you! It's so cool to see some of the innovation in lighting and modifiers especially when so much time and energy is focused on cameras.
Wow! That’s a wrap) i’m just thinking about 50/50 color bounce. One side one color. To regulate the shade of color - how much or little a particular shade is needed
I think this has fantastic potential to make reflection highlights really interesting, but they look a little unnatural at that saturation level. Overall I like the concept but sweet spot to me would be less colour saturation in the fabric. Also smoother gradation and blending between colours would help as many have said.
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. I feel like it would be simpler to use gels on lights bouncing off white instead. More economical 🤔 It’s a cool idea! But super niche. I dunno
This is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing, this was new to me :) How would you characterise the reflectivity of the fabric? Is it something close to muslin? Or is there some sheen to it, like a silk?
any reason you wouldnt just add that color to the light and then into an ultrabounce? Kind of seems unnecessary if you have gels or a source with RGB controls.
I loved the intro so much
yooo
its so similar to your style
thank man, one day ill be at Gawx video tier level!
I was thinking about your style while watching this intro lol
@@kurvaczenkosame lol gawx came straight to mind
I think all that's missing in the bounce's design would be to make the edge between colors fuzzier. It would help making the reflections more natural
Yes, maybe even some pseudo-random complexity like camouflage. I've often wanted something like that on set when using ultra bounce and feeling the same way about it that Nicholas describes here.

2:26 ooooh I can see the difference! white bounce lets light in much more, bluff gives a cloudy day vibe and looks more contrasty
It's always a good day when I see Lewis Potts uploaded a new video. :)

Oh, and it's a brazilian company! Super cool, I'm going to message all the rental houses in my area to get these haha 🇧🇷

this is why i always make sure to have a rothko nearby to bounce light into
Haha!

All of those issues could be solved by bouncing a gradient of several feathered/colored lights off something white. What a WANK product.

Intro, and reflection on the objects 🫶 cool to see the remote call with the creator as well!
Super big fan of how you’re having more and more fun with your videos, while simultaneously keeping the quality 💯
That is a nice idea!!!
Thanks for bringing this up!
Hi Lewis , You got some charm in yourself that reflects. You are a great actor also. Loved watching you.
No one competes with your transitions 🔥
the medival lute music caught me off guard, so whimsical and lovely
I've used a rustic red brick wall as a bounce in June and it gave such an architectural feel to the light and skin tones.
Another classic! Couldn’t stop chuckling at all the bits. Love these videos so much!
This is GREAT PRODUCT!! I can't believe no one else figured this our before now, and then marketed it. What a GREAT PRODUCT!
One of the best cinematography channels I've ever seen, thank you for your work!
Perfect for shoots here in sunny Florida! Gonna check them out.
Definitely want to try these! Great video!
This is a very interesting idea and tool. Great to see people thinking outside of the box.
So happy to see a new video! I've been watching back through your old ones the last couple days, thank you so much
Thanks!
I do like how the Bluff bounce subtly affects hard surfaces. I will have to try some of his rags. Thanks for sharing.

@@lewispotts definitely unbleached muslin. Roger Deakins uses it all the time when doing his "cove" lighting technique.
I'm shook to see you shot on the FX30. I expected the Komodo. Would love to see a video with your thoughts on the camera.
Pretty cool! I would opt for a 600x and 600D into an ultra instead and offset the color temps to eye.
One of my favorite channels. just thanks) You're cool!
this is fantastic. I had so much fun, and that’s a really interesting produce too. Hats off… or on

This one was from matthews
It's one of those interesr8ng ideas that I wonder why hasn't it been done before. Thanks for awesome content.
You put so much work on this!😍
hahah that eye squint in the rearview!!! love it!
You have the best ways to start your videos ❤
Another excellent video from you! It's so cool to see some of the innovation in lighting and modifiers especially when so much time and energy is focused on cameras.
People have been bouncing with sky blues for decades.
But it’s nice to see it freshly marketed. It’s a great technique.
Holy shiiii… that intro was brilliant!! Another great video from the master
Keep. Making. Videos. Like. This. Lewis!

Funny enough Emmanuel Lubezki had something like this for Tree of Life. That was shot on film as well. It’s a subtle trick and works really well
yooooo this intro - you're such a film maker
OMFG..... The "woooshhhhhhhh" killed me.
The GOAT has returned!!!

Definitely a cool product! Little details!
BRAZIL, LETS GO!
This is actually a really fun idea…now I’m thinking of all types of uses. 🧐
Friend o mine was spark on dunkirk = loads of tinted diffusion (blue or green)
I’d hardly call a rotating sea lion playing the sax “mindless content”, more like a 5-hour-doc-worthy subject
SWEEEET!!!! Back in the day, we used to have to DIY.
wow this looks so promising. Cheers Karnt
Great video! Loved the intro, and the subtle humor.

Good lord the intro is a masterpiece in itself. The lighting is incredible.
What type of rigs do you use for the car setup and how did you film the box prespective taken out of the car.
subbed for the sly looks to the camera
Genius!! That intro tho. Good stuff man!
your style is the best... also the cheap but effective falcoln eyes "flexy light" ha hell yeah
Top tire intro!
This is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing, this was new to me :)
How would you characterise the reflectivity of the fabric? Is it something close to muslin? Or is there some sheen to it, like a silk?
Yeah closer to muslin
I love the idea! Maybe they should offer versions that are dyed so the lines between colors fade into one another? Like an ombré dip dye?
Love this concept, always cool when someone thinks outside of the box 👏!
Loved the video intro too 🎥 🍕 🥒 😆!
“Just a rag”…
I get excited about rags, lima bounce comes out on set it’s a good day
any reason you wouldnt just add that color to the light and then into an ultrabounce? Kind of seems unnecessary if you have gels or a source with RGB controls.
