Love all these breakdowns Lewis! Keep up the good work. Also, I'm sure I don't just speak for myself when I say I can't wait to see breakdowns for your own work and the feature you recently shot with the Alexa 35.
The only complaint I have about this video is that you should upload many more exactly like this. Super interesting and straight to the point, love it!
So many videos calling themselfs “master classes in xxxx” THIS is the ONLY type of content that can call itself a master class. Literally explaining how something happens at the highest level of (art house) cinema. Thank you so much for doing this and please do it more :)
“If it looks good, that’s all that matters.” Great quote. Applies more often than some would feel comfortable, but we have to always remember that audiences won’t notice if the beauty overtakes the “continuity” or motivation. And of course great performances and story will very much occupy their attention.
@ 2:20 The light outside was way warmer than the inside of the store. I'm wondering if they did that because they could sell the harsh light better. But you know who gives a fuck, it gives a peace of mind that we have some room for error.
I know these videos take time to make.. but I always want them to go on!! Thanks for taking the time to make these great videos! It's amazing to think that we as consumers have access to some of the same things these filmmakers use! 😮 What a great time to live in! Thanks again for your excellent work! I appreciate it! 🙏🏾
Imagine how much time you would save if all youtubers did this. No Intro of themselves...no self indulgent info about their personal life...just straight to the meat.
Something about"If it looks good, that's all that matters." reminds me of a quote from Andrew Lesnie on Fellowship of the Ring. He was asked where a light was supposed to be coming from and replied, "Same place as the music."
Hello! Your channel is really awesome. I was curious if you could point me to one or some of your videos that talk about which settings to use inside of the camera to match the lighting you are doing on set - I seem to struggle dialing in my camera settings just right. or maybe there is a channel you know that focuses on lighting/settings for Sony cameras? I am using a Sony FX3. I am sure you are a busy guy and I don't want to bother you, thank you in advance. Thank you for sharing these tips and tricks on your channel for free. It is so helpful.
6:20 I get the point of 'how much you can get away with', but it still irks me seeing film lights and crinkly blackwrap in shot. This cinematography isn't getting any awards, you know. But I'd be fine with doing it in a TVC. I suppose they'd have had real practicals put in if they had the budget.
Hi, I'm a writer/producer working on my own movie. I'm in the planning production stage and I'm thinking about how I want the film to look. I saw Stuart Dryburgh's cinematography on the film, The secret life of Walter Mitty, and I loved how the film looked. I know he used Hawk V-Lite anamorphic lens to shoot the movie but I wanted to know what else he did to get the look of the film. How did he get that texture to the scenes. The movie looks a little fuzzy and warmer than other films Thanks for your time
I’d love to watch you do some deep-dive breakdowns of individual cinematographers, like Deakins, Kaminski, Conrad Hall etc and their various styles/approaches when it comes to creating certain looks. (Totally understand that’s a sh*t-ton of work, but if you don’t ask you don’t get, right?) Absolutely love your stuff, mate
The worst lighting continuity I've ever seen was in Hobbs and Shaw during the last fight. The sun goes down as the battle starts, so The Rock can do the haka with his *family* to have intense lighting with fire. Then 3 shots later, the sun literally comes up and is fully noon day again. After that movie, lighting continuity has bugged me ever since.
@@3trmedia kinda looks like it was designed to be 'just before sunrise' --> 'sunrise' --> 'morning'. Although I haven't seen the full movie so I don't have context as to what happened just before this clip
Always love when you post Lewis. I learn so much every time. I'd personally love to see a video of you making cinematic images using only small budget lights like the Amaran 60D's. Would be rly inspiring for small one man band filmmakers like myself. Thanks for all that you do!
You’re awesome man, I dig these little nuggets that are jam packed with a ton of info and allows me to just learn so much quicker. Question - when they bring that dolly arm in for the shot at 0:07, is someone operating the dolly, while someone else is remotely operating the ronin, while someone else is pulling focus? Just wanted to confirm how many people I would need to pull that move off with something more DIY 🤔
Omg! I watched Banshees of Inisherin twice and didn't notice the lighting and the little slips with its continuity. As you said, it just worked! Awesome video! I'll be watching more of your videos. Ps I loved Banshees!
Hi Lewis! Do you think RUclips's compression creates noise? It's very weird for me that using Venice 2 there is so much noise in the shots from the movie
Banshees was such a good movie. loved this BTS
Hey Vuhlandes ! Nice seeing you here !
Best lighting coach in the game. Always love watching these breakdowns so much!
Lewis is great. You should also check out Wandering DP. His stuff is great also.
Yeah +1 for WDP. He covers Banshees in his Patreon breakdown.@@THEwrexFILES
You forgot to mention they’re using the donkey as neg

As an aspiring filmmaker, these videos are INVALUABLE! Thank you!
I definitely notice the lighting discontinuity for some reason 💀
@ 2:20 The light outside was way warmer than the inside of the store. I'm wondering if they did that because they could sell the harsh light better. But you know who gives a fuck, it gives a peace of mind that we have some room for error.
My friend, Kris Kimlin, DP’d American underdog! Super wild to see it referenced on a video like this. thanks as always!

It would be so nice if your videos would have a subtitle

Holy smokes my favorite DP is back with a BANGER!!!
please breakdown Empire of Light, such a wonderful lightning and photography!!!
I’ve never clicked on a video faster. I love your channel lol
Same here!
I did a double take.... then clicked FAST! 💨😂
So basically... Titan tubes everywhere?
I don't know if you read all the comments. Of course, I like movies, but I study English on this channel. Thank you.(With korea translater.)
1:31 These “custom” lights are Maluna Lucioles: well known in Europe, France for example. Not so popular in the US. Tungsten.
These lighting breakdowns are the most interesting and useful videos about filmmaking that I've seen recently. Please keep them coming!

youre right about the lighting continuity in banshees but now that you pointed it out it bothers me
we all luv lewis 🐐
I have a question for you. To make it where you are at, did u go to film school, or not?
damn.... the undressing of a set like this is wild! thanks for sharing!
awesome video! thank you for making these!
To DP: Is this gonna match dude 🤣🤣🤣
dude I love these type of breakdown
God of lighting
That softbox reflected on the car window lol
nice sony venice. love seeing it.
I can't stop hunting for this kind of thing now when I'm watching films/shows

It's pretty enough but yeah considering the title of the movie and the general vibes it's clear it's not gunning for any Oscars

unfortunately i did not work on these
I literally love these videos so much
Simple, straight to it, here is what I see and what they achieved by doing it. Great breakdown, earned my sub!
Thanks for these, not only are they informative but also chill af
Please do one for Haunting of Hill House!
Really enjoy these videos. Would love to see you take a look at the lighting set-ups in some Fincher/Cronenweth films.
Sir, we need more Alexa 35 content
I really like this type of video, I could watch hours of these
So good, thank you Lewis!
American underdog was a great movie.
You're the best, man. Learning and implementing so many lighting skills I've learned from watching your videos.
Wake up babe lewis posted a new video
Really nice breakdown!
That last movie was awful.

So rad! Thanks for doing this!
These breakdowns really help me. As others have said, please make more. Subbed.
Everybody is so tight up about how things should be made or look. I love how easy going you are
your calling the light so accurately !
i kinda feel like a shit dp for not noticing this things while watching the film
I wonder how many times they shot those binge eating scenes.. I wish I could’ve been behind video village for that.. giving them my sage advice

Dude - I just watched it and it is absolutely horrendous :D All over the place - but the acting carries the scene … jk
ngl i love these videos
Gaffers watch movies and critique the lighting…. 🤷🏽♂️

It’s the monotone of voice that keeps me coming back.
i want have nice cinematic shots in my photography and this channel helps visualize concepts so so so much
It's amazing to watcj how the magic comes. Thank you guys, your work is perfect!
awesome vid
man.... common.... when will be new videos?????
really like your channel btw)))
Thank you
You should do the Evil Dead Rising, that movie was so dark in the lighting department but they pulled it off so well!
keep em coming man! love these breakdowns
So relaxing and insightful at the same time. Calms me down a lot haha 😇
These are awesome. Thanks for the breakdown! If you can find any for the movie “her” I’d love to see it!
Yeah i also want to know about that movie pls make video on it's lighting
we missed u!

That'd be my guess! Did a similar DIY setup recently with a small jib and an RS3 Pro head on it.
Curious why they used that big crane? All they did is back away...
Yeah the lighting inconsistencies of Banshees really ticked me off during the theater viewing
such a great breakdown, love your content
Your awesome, showing us how the big boys do it with a crew
These are amazing to watch Lewis!
Bro we need more content like this , thank you soooo much for doing it for us 😅
Why do movies all look the same nowadays?
love this
Love that philosophy. If it looks good its fine ❤
They made that with lots of burgers
Omg! I watched Banshees of Inisherin twice and didn't notice the lighting and the little slips with its continuity. As you said, it just worked! Awesome video! I'll be watching more of your videos. Ps I loved Banshees!
Why is 180 shutter speed normal (6:45)? I would have expected less? Rookie here!
That's shutter angle, not shutter speed. It's a subtle difference but there's plenty of videos on YT covering it
6:57 Why was I told "your shutter speed should be double your frame rate" He explained: ruclips.net/video/9tacNTkG0sw/видео.html
You were told correctly, but this is shutter angle, not shutter speed. These filmmakers did this by the books

great commentary on inisherin haha.
I get more excited about your new videos coming out than anything on RUclips. Thanks!
Thanks!
