I’ve been trying to sell this Isle of trains game for six months and nobody will buy it for $10. I’m actually quite surprised by this. I’m always amazed by how some Games completely drop off the radar and nobody knows about them.
It doesn't really turn heads by its box or name, but its underrated for sure. Surprised no one buys for ten dollars though, I would sell it for £10 easily.
I like the revisiting of the lists a year later to provide an update. My 2023 Top Ten didn't really change: 10. Darwin's Journey 9. Amritsar: The Golden Temple 8. Sky Team 7. Expeditions 6. Barcelona 5. 3 Ring Circus 4. Scholars of the South Tigris 3. The White Castle 2. Nucleum 1. Voidfall
I think I did a campaign list a while back, or something like "story driven" games. Oh yeah all the way back in 2019 - problem is I tend to not want to play big campaign games any more because of time commitments. Tainted Grail is kind of my go to campaign game for something meaty and Lands of Galzyr for light.
Deep Rock Galactic is one of my favorite board games of all time, and I love to see it mentioned in top 10 lists! I painted the original game and the expansions, and my wife and I are currently in the middle of a deep dive. Rock and Stone!
I actually love scholars so much. That in my rankings it has surpassed architects of west kingdom. Every time I played it I was like, how the heck did this guy design these mechanisms… it’s so addictive! I would think it might be seriously considered to enter into my top 10 of all time. But still not as yet. But getting closer each time I played
None of them I would put in the Top 100 of all time on BGG though. And Uprising is just a clone of Dune so it shouldn't have a separate entry. Age is at least a bit different from Terra Mystica (and better but just). And I just found Darwin just so boring.
I definitely disagree on the South Tigris trilogy, for me it would be Scholars, Wayfarers then Inventors. Looking forward to the expansions coming out.
GWT NZ and GWT Arg both favourites for us, but I absolutely agree that it makes sense to play the original first, as it would be a tough learning experience to dive straight in. Only the simmenthal cow in the original gives something I'd happily have in the other versions. I don't quite understand the dislike for GWT Arg, which I'd heard people complaining about before I played it. There are foibles, mostly the stupid graphic design for the ships / ports that makes it too easy to get the gameplay wrong. It's highlight for me is the farmers. Rather than being reduced to a late game rush, they now form an additional strategy of helping them and if you have the money, recruiting them. Likewise grain as an additional resource gives some interesting complexity around deliveries. Maybe the new El Paso 'party game😏' version might serve as enough of a springboard to the series, that allows people to bypass the original version.
Thanks for mentioning Evenfall, it’s totally an under appreciated gem of a game that gets better with time. Btw, I have a question concerning that little sticker that comes with the expansion. I looked everywhere in the rulebook, and still have no idea which faction is it supposed to correct with that sticker? Any hints would be much appreciated. 😉👌🏼
@@TheBrokenMeeple Oh! The faction called The Star. Thanks a lot it's clear now. You would think they would bother to clarify this in the expansion booklet, but they didn't. Love your content btw, Thanks Luke.
Two crossovers with my top ten of 2023. 10. Stationfall (the party game for heavy gamers) 09. Sail (the best trick taker of the year) 08. Earth (like Wingspan, but not quite as good) 07. White Castle (thinky game that plays really quickly) 06. Barcelona (point salad goodness) 05. Come Sail Away (really nice venture into bigger games from S&S) 04. Taiwan Night Market (looks really cute but totally cutthroat) 03. Hegemony (how to get asymmetric play right) 02. Horseless Carriage (would probably be #1 if it played at two) 01. Nucleum (Brass crossed with Barrage crossed with Concordia)
I’ve only got a top 5 for the year - but zero crossovers Cyberion Knarr Marabunta Mind Up Perspectives Ahh well - it’d be dull if everyone had the same taste in games
Hegemony 🙅🏼 sorry way to big and scary for me. I really need to try a big game like this I know but I get scared of it way too easily. Evenfall is one that I would love to try at some stage. Anyways big fella good retrospective review! Can’t wait for your top 50 (I know you are dreading it 🙈)
I got Scholars and Vale, however Evenfall and Art still elude me. Hoping to get them on some FB marketplaces. Deep Rock is however definitive winner for my group. We loved every second of every game.
I think it has a decent amount of differences. The deck building and selling the sheep is the same and you could argue the boat board is similar to the Rail to North expansion for the base game, but having a 4th character who can shear sheep for cash as an alternative strategy is pretty huge. The bonus tiles are also different from the base game and it feels more open ended. You certainly don't feel pigeon holed into "must sell the biggest herd possible". You really ought to try it.
I don't think we have any crossover at all this time! My list would include Expeditions and Apiary, Voidfall and Forest Shuffle, Mosaic and the WOTR card game. Though if I expanded my list to ten titles, I'd include Hegemony and possibly GWT New Zealand. Evenfall I hated, and Earth gets booted by Forest Shuffle every time.
I understand why hegemony is a great game, but it's just not my kind of game, so I will almost certainly never try it. Earth is in my top 10 of all time and I will play at any time. I do like Forest shuffle very much, though, so I will disagree with you there, perhaps forever. I also enjoy world wonders.

Enjoy these types of lists, always interesting to see how games hold up down the track.
I like the revisiting of the lists a year later to provide an update. My 2023 Top Ten didn't really change:
10. Darwin's Journey
9. Amritsar: The Golden Temple
8. Sky Team
7. Expeditions
6. Barcelona
5. 3 Ring Circus
4. Scholars of the South Tigris
3. The White Castle
2. Nucleum
1. Voidfall
I would love to see a top 10 list on campaign games played solo (including LCGs). Tiering would also be cool.

@@TheBrokenMeeple Did you end up liking Kings of Ruin or Fall of Avalon better?
@EFiedorowicz kings of ruin overall but best to start with Avalon, try to get the 2.0 upgrade pack though.
Deep Rock Galactic is one of my favorite board games of all time, and I love to see it mentioned in top 10 lists! I painted the original game and the expansions, and my wife and I are currently in the middle of a deep dive.
Rock and Stone!
I'm contemplating getting my set painted but man it's a lot of money to commission it.

Darwin’s journey, Age of Innovation and Dune Imperium Uprising each entered the BGG top 100. GWT NZ is still climbing.
None of them I would put in the Top 100 of all time on BGG though. And Uprising is just a clone of Dune so it shouldn't have a separate entry. Age is at least a bit different from Terra Mystica (and better but just). And I just found Darwin just so boring.
Love it! Never thought I'd see you placing a Great Western Trail game in a top 10!
Nor did I!!
I definitely disagree on the South Tigris trilogy, for me it would be Scholars, Wayfarers then Inventors. Looking forward to the expansions coming out.
I also love love love scholar. I can’t stop playing it!
I also prefer Scholars over Wayfarers. And Paladins is my favorite out of the west kingdom triology

I'm curious about El Paso for sure - but I still want to try Argentina.

The faction who spends cards s resources and has a bunch of them, it balances out the cheap cost of their advisors (underneath your board)

Yeah Nucleum, Barcelona and Horseless ain't crossing over with me for sure! :P I don't mind Nucleum though.
Earth isn’t “crunchy” enough for me. It just feels like “everything is points!!”. I prefer Ares Expedition
Ares just dragged on too much with a full group, the end game never seemed to come at a fast enough pace.
One of us! One of us! YAY! Great Western Trail! 2nd edition with expansion is still great!
It's fine but I find the expansion kind of forces you to invest heavily in it
@@TheBrokenMeeple Would be great to get a video where you break down each edition and what you like/dislike about each one 👍
@Duxa_ have yet to play Argentina
I’ve only got a top 5 for the year - but zero crossovers

Ha ha, yes Hegemony is a big event and certainly not for everyone!
Will you play Hegemony solo?
Occasionally I do.
I got Scholars and Vale, however Evenfall and Art still elude me. Hoping to get them on some FB marketplaces. Deep Rock is however definitive winner for my group. We loved every second of every game.
YES! Glad to hear that!
Is great western trail New Zealand very different to second edition?
I loved second ed but now you tempting me to try out new zealand

Sounds like I should try it out! Thanks for replying!
