I am 5 min in and I appreciate your speaking speed and multitasking. As a adhd person this is the speed I need people to talk to me. Most people talk so dang slow.
I always have to speed it up, but didn't have to this time. I also took some hand sewing with me to a meeting once (it was in a stadium so hardly anyone could see me) and I was told I was being rude by my boss sitting next to me - for paying attention to that "instead" of the speakers. But I couldn't pay as good of attention when I had to set it down. I get the social norms and how it appeared to her, but she didn't get that it allowed me to pay better attention.
I love that you spent a year developing an understanding of how you work as a writer and optimize for that. Nobody talks about doing this when we transition with work identities. I constantly feel like a drag when trying on a new role if can't get it right away or even in a few months. Will take note of this to take my time and develop this new relationship with myself so we can work together instead of me against my brain
So glad I stumbled across this. AuDHD writer here, who was collecting notes to make a similar video somewhere down the road, and I can second everything you said! Especially the tread desk. When I had one, my words/hour doubled. Now that I don't have a tread desk, I use my timers to make sure I get up and walk for at least 10 minutes every hour. I will also add: sound! Some people concentrate well with music, but I found I either need to play white noise OR use atmospheric sounds that relate to what I'm writing. I'm currently writing a novel set by the sea, so I've been using ocean sounds, and it helps keep distractions at bay. The other thing I'll add is a tip I got from Alexa Donne (who in turn got it from someone else, can't remember who), which is to use stickers. It sounds silly, but every 500 words I write, I put a sticker in my calendar, and the tiny burst of dopamine I get from earning a sticker can motivate me to write more. BUT I discovered this only works for me if the stickers are really cute and if there's variety. I lose the dopamine reward if I'm just getting the same sticker over and over. Anyway, thanks for a great video! I think it will help a lot of people.
Your description around 10:12 of being able to concentrate and work longer with the walking treadmill cause it kinda distra ted the distraction part of your brain reminds me of me in high school, I would doodle these ever growing mandala-like circular patterns on the unused witheboard and that allowed me to focus on what the teacher said very well. At first the teachers would test me cause they thought I was screwing around but i always knew the answers so they left me alone. Same in elementary school i'd literally get up from my desk and wander around the class, between desks or sit and stare at the ceiling from my desk but as soon as a teacher asked me a question I knew it cause I really was listening. Again thankfully no teachers threw me in a box in the corner, but I did emerge from a high school filled with kids with learning disabilities yet my ADHD slipped under the radar (probably because i don't have hyperactivity) Luckily I was never reprimanded for this cause I certainly didn't understand why i did it just automatically. Finally was officially diagnosed a couple years ago and it's been a hard struggle to lesrn to live with this brain.
This randomly came up as suggested but it was so illuminating! I have read books and things about these strategies and rituals, but your connecting it to boundaries and understanding how one’s brain works really put it in perspective ! Especially reframing that “giving in” mindset. I’d love to hear more about that!
What a joy to stumble upon this video! I have come to the same conclusions as you, I just needed longer than a year, and I'm still not done with my first novel.
Thank you for this video!! I've recently been diagnosed with ADHD after years of struggling to conform to the "standard" writing tips. Your vulnerability and insight here is SO helpful!
I love this video so much!! I was wondering if you would ever elaborate on how you went about gathering data on your adhd and eventually building a relationship with it?? I just cannot work out how one would go about doing that and would love to know how you did!!
such an insightful video, I love your vulnerability. as an aspiring writer, forever stuck in the plotting & outlining phase - I really enjoying your empathetic perspective towards yourself, giving your self grace in the process & how you spoke on your relationship with your brain and how it is a companion in your writing. I saw your series on ig chatting about your neighbor, I remember commenting that he was marriage material when you posted that he read aloud to you, and also remember that I thought that would be such a cute love story element in a movie/book! I am so excited you are writing this. I GASPED watching this when you said the spoiler that you are together now in this video because I hadn’t seen that bit yet!! I look forward to this book and also your cozy fantasy!
New subscriber here! So happy I stumbled across your channel!! I just finished editing my own fantasy book (128k words) that has taken me over 7 years to write because I didn't know anything about writing when I started (also didn't know I have ADHD until recently) but the story has spiraled into a trilogy now and I'm weirdly scared to start writing the next book because I burned out so hard over and over writing the first one. These tips have already made me more confident to dive back in and I can't wait for the rest of the series!
Writing sprints in Discord and on RUclips! Body doubling with other writers and having time constraints is 🤌 Also, a foot roller/massager under your desk so that your feet can fidget 😊
i could relate mildly to almost everything you mentioned, i do love me a nice timer too, but then you brought up your struggle with vulnerability (and being a virgo, eldest daughter)... i just had to hit subscribe because now i need to know more about this adhd + writing journey.
Hi. I'm new here but I'd like to say this. I'm also a writer and I have ADD, which is kind of similar to ADHD. Your advice about having the disorder as a writing partner was very different. I always thought it was challenging since it's hard to stay focused, my main problem is the constant distractions. I love writing since I've written thirty-nine FanFictions and many books growing up. (No book has been published) I might try some of your advice like writing routines I've tried but I cannot time myself since it gives me some anxiety. I do agree that it's great to listen to music while you write and with the ambient sounds as well. Those are relaxing to listen to. Thanks for the video!
Excited for this series. I'm in the early stages of developing a writing practice, and this is really helpful. I love my Time Timer, too! I have a floor desk (I sit on a couple of cushions, so I can move around quite a bit) and could really benefit from getting up and doing things around the house as breaks.
Amazing video, thank you... lots of valuable every day tips coz all of my days are different with being a canine massage therapist but i still need to do the business paperwork and i still don't know when my brain works best (i suspect it lies to me on some days too 😉). So honesty, thank you xxx
Omigosh, I love you so much, lol, in a schoolgirl bff kinda way 😜 Just found you, as I’m coming to terms with being ADD, but it checks out, lol, no wonder I have a million notebooks, lots of ideas and projects and can’t finish anything. Until now 👍🏼😉 Your studio is great, light is PURRFECT for your eyes, and when you lean in to that mic, it actually does sound like a purr ;) 😸 Did you link the mic, too, I wonder, bc I wasn’t thinking of that as office supply, but I guess it definitely is, isn’t it?! 😛🤘🏼
How do you remember what thing you need to do when the timer goes off? Do you write a little note? I’m thinking of limiting my calendar and reminder apps to things I have to leave the house for because I tend to ignore reminders for other things. Maybe going back to a list or something.
Thanks for the video, it's very interesting! How long do you set the timer for the writing sprints? I've heard a lot of good things about the pomodoro method but I've never tried it because I don't like being interrupted when I'm hyperfocusing. But I have a pretty similar timer that I bought because it was very cute so I might as well try it out.
Wooow that was so rich and full of good advices and tools, I really love listening to you talking ! One thing I struggle with that you could cover: how do you get yourself started ? How do you set a frame of ideas which gives you a direction ? It seems like I always have ideas but when it's time to write I'm kinda frozen. Can't wait for other videos :) 🫧

For people with a lower budget, instead of a swivel chair I bought a skateboard to put under my desk!!
that is such a great idea!!!
As long as it's stable, great idea! I got one on Craig'slist for free, so that's another possibility.
"If I have a superpower, it is that I can hyperfocus myself into a burnout."
I'm with you 😅
love the video and can't wait to see more!
This video is So ADHD Friendly! I really appreciate it!
I'm 9 seconds in and "I can't make a RUclips video without having something to do with my hands" is already a mood

I think YOU’RE helping a lot of people, too! Thanks for these additional tips!
Who doesn’t love stickers, lol 🥳
@@rocky1raquel Thank you! I'm getting quite the collection of stickers, myself. Haha. 🙂

New subscriber and fellow (female) ADHD’er (and aspiring writer) here! Love your energy! 😊
What a joy to stumble upon this video! I have come to the same conclusions as you, I just needed longer than a year, and I'm still not done with my first novel.
THANK YOU!! This is a video i didn’t know i needed but i REALLY DID NEED🥰
literallyyyy 💫🌸😌

the irony of me getting distracted watching this video when I’m supposed to be writing lol oops
I love this video so much!! I was wondering if you would ever elaborate on how you went about gathering data on your adhd and eventually building a relationship with it?? I just cannot work out how one would go about doing that and would love to know how you did!!
I’m so glad I came across this video, I too have ADHD and writing my first book. I need all the help I can get so I’m really excited for your series 😊

Yay, i love you on insta and am so glad to see you dabbling in longer YT videos! Also as an aspiring writer, i'm def using these tips.
Thank you for sharing! I absolutely love your storytelling ❤
