@Branford313 Hi Branford, no - you could do this without ICON controller and use just a mouse, but the concept of the controller makes it faster & easier.
is the external piece of hardware that has the wheel he is using necessary to accomplish what he did with it, or can that be done in the software itself also?

You can use the mouse, everything that can be done in pro tools on hardware can be done the same using a keyboard and mouse

Yes pro tools is industry standard but it's completely arbitrary. It just showed up at the right place at the right time.
