I do believe the reason why this has fared better than most live actions. Is because the person who made one piece was pretty much hands on for this live action project. Making sure that the details were right and correct. And also they built physical props for this. Not relying on CGI the whole time. Those transponder snails that they use as telephones. Those are all handmade and real. Probably have some CGI support but that's about it. Also, I love the one piece anime and manga. It's one of my favorites. Because it just has a well built world

I must say, I watch it expecting to hate it and, is pretty good. Is the same as the anime/manga? No, but it captures the core of the story. Some things look weird like Zoro using 3 swords? Yes feels pretty accurate without over doing it. I in general was happy with it. It must be one of the best live-action adaptation Netflix has ever done.

I find the series to be more akin to Dragon Ball Kai, which was Dragon Ball Z but with heavily reduced episodes to focus only on the key plot points. Same here in that the first 66 chapters of the manga or 44+ episodes of the anime were reduced to just 8 60-minute episodes - and they pulled it off very well. Saint Seiya made the same attempt but ended up a disaster.

Big shout out to the costume designers, the practical effects people, and the one who made the decision to change up the Going Merry's figurehead, at least a little from the awful first version we were shown. ^^; Thank you. Season 2? I'd be curious to see more perfectly cast OP characters. Really so many were perfectly cast, from their energy and sometimes even physical / facial traits. I wonder if they did some subtle cgi adjustments/enhancements to their mouth movement. They seems to be larger and stretches wider across their faces esp. when laughing (may be using the magic of made-up?). Also, Sanji's legs seems to be longer during fight scenes. Overall, the characters just feels right at home, not at odds with the manga. Very enjoyable and entertaining.

I went into this live action adaptation after suffering with a horrible adaptation of Wheel of Time and Cowboy Bebop. So, I had very low expectations for One Piece. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good this show was. I think they did a decent job of condensing the East Blue saga down to 8 episodes.
As for my credentials, I'm just a fan. I own all of the English volumes of the manga. I am not a fan of the anime as it starts suffering from the constant releases of episodes and has to slow down the pace so that it doesn't overtake the manga. I only go to the anime for when I want to see special epic moments from the manga. I will continue to go to the anime for that because it is much more faithful to the manga. But the live action is a good way to bring in new viewers, so I'm satisfied. I hope they continue to adapt more seasons.

I think grounding the material in reality is probably the key to successfully translating anime/manga into live action. That’s why Kenshin did so well in fact the movie with Tomoe in it was the best example of that. The slice of life animes translate very well too because they’re already pretty grounded in reality themselves. It sounds like they’re starting to get it, which is good news. 👍

    • @garenthal9638
      @garenthal9638 10 месяцев назад +1

Thing is with one piece, there are parts that if you ground it, then it’s not one piece. What they did with Luffy was told the actor to purposely be as over the top as Luffy actually is and they will then keep toning it down bit by bit in each take until it still works. I think that was smart

Ah, I forgot it aired yesterday. I'm out to watch it. (will edit back when I watch the first episode)
I'm a fan of One Piece, and finished the first episode, it looks VERY PROMISING. Might not follow the manga storyboard panel by panel but the most important plot points, messages and damn, the atrezzo and attention to detail and the CGI is spot on an not visually tacky. Heck, I loved the outline of the first episode, and the actors chosen to represent the protagonists and other villains are quite close to the cartoons. Obviously the stylization of many of the characters makes hard to find the proper make-up and actor for each one, but so far, even Koby grew on me. My only nitckpick is that I still need to get a bit more used to the actor for Luffy, but he isn't doing it bad (I mean, I never visualized Luffy being curly haired and that ethnicity, but he isn't acting that bad, and does have a wonderful smile that makes me think he really is enjoying acting like Luffy, and that is a plus from me).
I believe this live action is doing good justice to the original work of Eichiiro Oda. I was a bit hopeless because of the previous live action fiascos, but this one looks promising. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched the original anime or even fans. I'm also very happy we can have a real ginger representing Nami and she looks quite good for the role (and she's a fan of the character to boot!).
Oh well, that's my little opinion on it, and I'm really hard to please. Will watch the rest of the season tonight because it really left a good taste in my mouth and I'm thrilled to see the rest of the season. I'm happy also that they preserved the messages from the original story like the concept of freedom but not by doing evil deeds. One Piece is quite a philosophical story and that's what captivated me the most when I started with the anime many years ago. Ah... Hope they keep steering the franchise nicely as they started with this season. I am pleazed... 😋

Wow Mr. Chato I’m surprised to here you say anything positive about this. I wasn’t sure about this since it is the same that made cowboy bebop for Netflix and it’s one piece. I’m a fan of one piece and I know that this is one the the more extremely difficult to do in live action. I know that these producers say that they learned their lesson, but there is one other factor that keeps me from believing them. It’s Erichiro Oda himself, the Author of one piece! Whatever contract that was signed gave Oda a lot of power on the show. Oda had power over the casting, reshoots, and more and he is also the reason why I only have sliver of hope for this.
Now with your video I’m going to check this one out.

I watched Ep 1 & 2 last night, and I really enjoyed it. Watching the rest this evening. When this show was first announced, I was very very very cautiously optimistic. But in the last 9 months, I found myself more and more excited to watch it. I didn't believe the Oda involvement at first, but it's true, he was the final say so on everything. The showrunners (not the Tomorrow Studios prod people like Marty Adelstein) were already long time fans of the manga and anime. But it was Godoy and Emily Rudd that sold me on the show. Every statement they made, everything they posted about the show - there was always the desire to do two things: 1) make a good show for the fans, 2) make sure Oda-sensei was satisfied. There was never any kind of attack on the fans or elitist tweeting or any of the BS that normally accompanies practically every adaptation that we've seen in the last 5 years. Chato is correct - there is no woke garbage on here. It is literally a show that the entire family can watch and not have to worry about content.
For sure, grounding it in a bit of a more adult (mature?) tone, cutting out a lot of the over the top stuff (especially Nami punching Luffy out every 5 minutes) and using practical effects as much as possible probably helps as much as anything.
And for my part, I like Godoy and Mackenyu (I hear the dudes that play Sanji and Usopp are good too), but Emily Rudd is killing it with her portrayal of Nami. Plus she is smoking hot. If the show sticks around I wonder if they'll figure out a way to give her the post-time-skip figure....

@@jenniferst.george810 Yes - at the rate it takes these days for a show to get made, not to mention the strike not seeming to have an end in the foreseeable future, they're going to have to figure things out if it keeps going. Inaki is 20 right now but Emily Rudd is 30.

Well, that's not exactly what Chato said. A lot of productions take a lot of stuff from the source material. What they take and how they interpret it to live action often fails. Compare the 1980's Captain America to the MCU Captain America. the earlier version was spot on with the comic costume, but failed in everything else. The MCU's version focused on Steve Rogers' character, made nods to the original costume, but did a more practical version to be passible. And the story takes place all in WW2!
JJTrek also takes from TOS, but views it through the eyes of what normies think Star Trek is, instead of the thoughtful, inspirational stories and characters fans see. JJTrek is all style (not even good style imo) and no substance.

I still think that One Piece is a bit rough. It's a step in the right direction compared to other adaptations, but I feel some important scenes were left out that makes the emotional moments not hit as hard. I just hope we don't accidentally end up with 4Kids levels of cuts.

I was so afraid that they were going to ruin this property a la Cowboy Bebop. I found it refreshing that it respected and echoed the anime. I think the moment that felt like maybe it was in good hands happened in the flashback scene where Binks’ Sake was playing in the background. It took me a moment to recognize why that music felt so right, but it was awesome. Fingers crossed for the balance of the series, and hopes that Netflix et al will learn from this experience.

Familiar with the anime, but was never a proper fan, so I didn't go into it with preconceived notions of how is "should" have been adapted. I will happily continue watching it, and recommend it to others with similar interests.

I'm impressed with your knowledge of anime. If you don't mind subtitled anime than I would recommend two series that are brilliant, but in very different ways.
"Monster" is a murder mystery with the greatest, in a way most terrifying villain of all time. There's obviously more to it, but that would spoil things. Guillermo del Toro wanted to make an adaption of this for years.
"Mushishi" is completely different, more of a meditative experience. Stories of a travelling "healer" in a Japan with its own lore. It's the Art and the music that make it stand out.
And if you don't know it, watch "Black Lagoon", it's dubbed. That would be a great series, well suited for an adaptation.

And to prove it if you actually look up on RUclips and find the final scene where speed racer is trying to start the Mach 6 in many people have actually substituted the music that the movie used like music from initial D.... And other beloved franchises in music. And honestly it just

Oh shoot my apologies I did not get to type out the rest of my message.
I was trying to say going forward if you ever cancer maybe make a graph that shows characterization in statistics that well going forward movies or live-action adaptations are going to have to kinda make that the standard.
So for me it's just a few things.
And you can disagree or point out any flaws that I might kind of bring up I am always open to have a discussion.
If we get actors I think they need to be vetted by some kind of social media security whatever title.
Their job is to make sure if they are pushed that they won't push back even harder. For instance if people don't like it we won't have one person who probably played a major role acting like oh you are just all stupid or don't understand how hard it was to make this or do this or whatever.
None of that.... I mean look at movies in the 90 I know social media wasn't as big as it is now but we did not have people speak out who were actors and worked on the projects they didn't say oh I'm sorry you didn't like it. You're all horrible people.
We need actors going forward to promise or sign some kind of documentation that says they're allowed to express some things but just blaming anything on the people who watch the production is now just a No-No.
I know that's kind of dumb but I just think if people going to act like children we need to treat them like children. You act up you get a timeout lol.
Second thing we need to make sure whoever is doing these live-action at that tations actually knows about the source material or a little bit about it.
With the cowboy bebop everything was completely changed they kept a lot of stuff close to the vest but it just did not make fucking sense.
We need to stop having adaptations basically become someone's fanfiction I know that certain liberties have to be compromised when making things like this I get that and I will never ever.
Helen actor they did a bad job because they did the best they could and they couldn't give me a one-hundred-percent replica.
We need some kind of person to make sure that a large amount of it obeys The source material. hell maybe we can call them source material director.
( PS please let me know about the idea of creating a new position called source material director. Whose sole purpose is to make sure that not too much is deviated from The source material.)

Great review! One Piece has been around since at least 2001 in the West (Europe and the USA) but 1996 in Japan.
Naruto, Dragon Ball Z and Bleach were its rivals during the period 2001-2010 and Naruto dominated in the West - while One Piece dominated in Japan.
Dragon Ball Z is a much older 80's show but it arrived in the West at about the same time as One Piece - but 12 years before One Piece in Japan.
