Safariland defines their level 3 holster as having 3 levels of retention, the tension screw, the SLS (flip down hood), and ALS (lever that you pull down to lift the block which interfaces with the firearms ejection port and locks it in place). Whereas their level 1 is just the ALS.
Basically lvl 1 is just plain old, friction. The gun remains in the holster due to gravity and friction. Lvl 2 retention is either a button or lever that disengages a mechanism in the holster, that grips onto the gun somewhere, like the trigger guard. Lvl 3 retention is lvl2 + lvl3 mechanism like a hood that covers both the lever for release of lvl2, cover the physical gun so if lvl2 was disengaged the firearm would not be removed. There is LVL3+ with different mechanics, different devices and ways to rock or move the gun along with the other retention mechanisms. Alot of this is up to manufacturer, I use lvl3 retention (with a hood) for duty carry as private security. I don’t need more than that, and it’s required by law and by our policies to use that holster for safety reasons. We cannot open carry without a lvl3 holster. We can conceal without any retention (except friction) if trained, authorized and qualified with the firearm. So… just Google it lol you’ll get a overall better understanding. Look up lvl3/lvl2 holsters for duty, read the specs.
So what is the difference between holsters? In levels
