Mast Step and Alignment - Episode 152 - Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat

  • With wrapping up the bronze floors comes working on the mast step. This wild looking piece is built up out of live oak and black locust and looks more like a sculpture than a structural element in the boat!
    We also check alignment on Arabella to see if everything is still where it should be. Granted, we should have checked this before installing the knees but on our small routine checks, nothing seemed to have moved.
    And finally, we'll be getting started on spars soon!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

    RUclips notifications: I noticed, several months ago, that ALL of my "notifications" were changed to "personalized" which means that you don't really get any notifications. This happened on many of the channels that I am subscribed to so I went through all 100 + channels and made sure that they were all reset to "All." Hope this helps the subscriber base. Thanks, Stephen, Alix and Ben, for this wonderful channel. You keep reminding me of my older brother, GOD Bless his soul and may he rest in peace, as he had been in the U.S. Navy and loved sailing. I know you guy do a lot of testing and what not, however (as a metal fabricator with over40 years experience) can I make a suggestion in order to save some possible serious grief that will be coming down the road. When cutting the webbing on your bronze floors you may want to take great care in putting in radius corners internally and to some extent polishing (not a high polish by any means) but you do not want any sort of grind marks going sideways across the end of those plates that will absolutely cause a stress riser and eventually crack those floors in the corners where you cut them. Simply a suggestion nothing more.

    Guys mounting your mast step directly on top of your bronze floors is going to apply a great deal of fore and aft pressure on the floors that they were not designed to take. The simple expedience of adding oval blocks as packers to the bottom of the mast step and pinning through into the keel would eliminate the effects of fore aft strains and continue to allow bilge water to flow in the correct direction. As an after thought you could weld bronze plate into the floors notches in sections or as one long piece connecting all four floors and drill and screw through into the mast step, this would resist fore and aft side to side and rotational forces whilst at the same time spread any loading more evenly through that section of the boat.

    • @boooshes
      @boooshes 3 года назад

      I think the reason the step interface block is knotched is so that no downward forces are transferred into the bronze floors, but the vertical forces are widely distributed into the keel. I'm not sure yet how the interface block is being fastened to the keel or how the mast will be captured into the interface block.

    I am worried about the way you put the mast step on the floors. You basically put a large block of wood on four knives. If your floors are 1/2" thick and the mast step is 10" wide, the total surface of wood resting on those four bronze floors is 20 sq inch. The maximum safe pressure on wood "in general" is 60 psi, so you can safely put a 1200 lbs load on it, which is probably the weight of the mast and rigging. If you put load from tensioning the shrouds and heeling the boat in a fresh wind plus vertical acceleration in waves your mast step will gently lower itself on the keel. Not a good plan.
    I would say to reconsider this and come with a safe plan. Frank Mulder, Amsterdam.

    Hi, really enjoy following progress on Arabella each Saturday morning here in NZ - great job. I’m a little concerned that the step block appears to be being supported solely by the 4x ½" edges of the bronze floor uprights, rather than using the full underside of the step block resting on the keel timber. This doesn’t seem to me to be a very effective way to support and transfer the weight from the mast into what is effectively the strongest part of the hull. Or is the plan to eventually remove timber on the underside of the step block (around where the wings of the bronze floors attach to the keel) to allow it to then sit flush on the keel over the wings of the bronze floor?

  • @mashrien
    @mashrien 3 года назад

    Why is attaching the mast to a thin plank and 5 floors+frames stronger than attaching it to a GIANT timber and ALL the floors+frames?
    I broke it down in a comment on the last video but I'm fairly certain the keel timber, with the frames being wedge-shaped, attached to all the frames, floors, and even planks.. would be a much more sturdy attachment than a smaller hunk of wood that's only attached to half-a-dozen bronze floors.
    Steve's reasoning in the last video was that the keel is already under a lot of strain from everything else and that it wants to pull out the bottom.. But the keel is not only lined with a few *massive* planks tying it into the frames, but it's got like 30+ bronze V-shaped wedges on it that would have to spread all the frames, planks and everything else apart before it could push out the bottom of the boat.

    Edit: the other thing to check dimensionally is *diagonal symmetry.* Measure from centerline to a pair of points X" aft of that. Should be the same distance both sides.

  •  3 года назад

    What about filling that large check in the Black Locust with epoxy? Also, are you planning on rounding over the right angles on the bronze tabs you just cut? Seems like it would relieve the possibility of stress fractures, plus just look cleaner and be safer. The project is looking great!

    You could gain some floor space by channel cutting the outboard side (closest side to the hull), of the floor planks to slip past the ribbing, and then angle cut the outboard side (closest to the hull), of the flooring to provide some space for ventilation and drainage into the bilge. You could gain as much as 4 to 6-inches of floor space on each side of the boat with this process.

    Out of morbid curiousity. Why cut the bronze floors as deep as you did? I get needing to nestle it in there but seems like they (even the one) is significly weakers. Also are you going to weld on some tabs or brackets to better hold the mast block, and bolt it down?

  • @davidc6510
    @davidc6510 3 года назад

    I am puzzled as to why you mounted the mast step to the top of the bronze floors via slots in the wood as well as why you removed metal from the floors to provide clearance to the mast step when you could have put a rebate into the wood. This configuration appears to be weak to forward and aft loading and will cause additional fatigue stress to be focused on your welded joints. You both are really good at research and I am sure you have a reason for doing this and already have a solution in mind to mitigate this issue. Thanks for sharing.

      like and dislike is also there to help youtube giving you good recomendations.
      the dislike is not made to give the channel owner a bad feeling, its there to show youtube what you like and what not.

    I don't have the bell activated. I use the subscription tab to see if there are new videos

    • @99Etien
      @99Etien 3 года назад +1

      That is exactly where the videos sometimes don't show up if you did not activate the bell. The Subscription Tab is also influenced by the algorithm! If you don't watch a channel regularly youtube will show you less videos of it in the Subscription Tab

    • @mastex5575
      @mastex5575 3 года назад +1

      @@99Etien the subscription tab is NOT www.youtube.com it is ruclips.net/user/feedsubscriptions where ONLY your subscriptions are listed. I'm NOT referencing the page where you can see videos of channels you are NOT subscribed to! This page has never failed me and I visit it several times a day when I have spare time.

    Hi, a question if possible. Why are the ends of the bolts (stainless steel) sticking out? I assume they are temporary, waiting to be replaced by copper rivets. This boat you are building is a dream come true. Congratulations, she will certainly be a masterpiece.

      Temporary, yes. That's where the bilge bands will go.

    Why sell the parts? You should auction them, then you don't have to guess at what someone will pay, the buyers decide. (And you make more $$$)

    I'm sure you love hearing minor worries from random viewers, but is there enough clearance from the sides to the mast step to the sides of the floor athwartship braces to allow the step to swell when it gets wet? It looked pretty tight in the notches in the floors that you cut. Even four big bolts isn't going to keep it from swelling a bit at the bottom. I don't know how green that wood is, but live oak can shrink or swell 6.6% radially and 9.5% tangentially. www.wood-database.com/live-oak/

    • @willshen6597
      @willshen6597 3 года назад

      If that's clear as mud, let me put it this way: if the mast step swells, are the sides of the mast step going to press on the bronze floors anywhere?

      Thanks for the kind words! We don't think local officials would like getting pounced on by thousands of people, and in smaller towns, it's not necessarily a good thing that out-of-towners would try to influence what is, essentially, a community decision. In this case, calm and peaceful is the way. The parties involved don't need a battle, they need a truce.

    I don't get why you cut up the floors, that must weaken them pretty badly. And please cut off those bolt ends before you pierce yourselves falling on to them!

    Hi Gentlemen, I know you have a lot going on but I thought of an Ide athat may be something popular with the viewers and make you a little money. take some of the off cuts of wood and brand the acorn to Arabella logo into them you can have a branding iron made cheap easy and I know I would love to have one for my desk.

      Just don't send it overseas. Unless you want to be responsible for exporting pests to foreign countries. Send it to Australia and you might find the fines exceed the profits by a factor of 10. Probably even more if you send it to New Zealand.

    I am surprised you have chosen to set the mast step on the edges of the bronze floors.
    I would think the stress concentration would let the floors act like knives or wedges that would cut into the mast step.
    I think you need to add pieces of bronze to spread the pressure on the wood mast step timber.
    Thanks for the vids
