  • In this General Tire Review we're looking at the AltiMAX Rt45. The AltiMAX RT45 is a great entry into the all-season category for General Tire, and has new features that build upon where the AltiMAX RT43 left off. It was designed to be more comfortable and get better traction in wet and light snow conditions, and have a longer tread life. In addition, General Tire has included Lateral Pattern Edges. Check out the video to learn more about them.

    When measuring the tire for depth you need to measure the middle of the tire besides the exterior and the interior of the tire. If you measure inside middle and outside it will tell you if you are under inflated or over inflated. If you just measured that inside edge and outside edge and it tells you if you have a bad alignment.

    Excellent review video for an excellent A/S tire. Many thanks.
    PS: 4:41 / FWIW, I just bought a set of RT45 205/70R15s ('94 Buick Regal) during the final week of May, 2024.
    Again, I'm all convinced and I agree about the fine quality of this product as a "higher / middle class" tire. However, this set of four tires were made, alas, in BRAZIL, not the USA.
    Other sizes of RT45 may be manufactured in the USA but one must be careful in selecting the right Mfg. code. Now I'm looking for (4) A/S 205/70R15s made here from a company such as Cooper, Mastercraft, Continental or Goodyear. Preferably with 10 or 11/32 tread depth, 96 load range and 'T' speed rating.
    Anyone? Thx!

    Put a set of these on my winter beater (good luck finding many brand-name tire options for a buick century! there were only 3.) And they seem great. a set was 120$ more than the no-name tire sets, but anyone who's ever driven a car with something awful like a milestar or equivalent, knows that the price difference is worth it. Cheap tires absolutely are made ultra-hard, & consequently will be awful in rain, snow, anything other than dry conditions. and even in dry conditions traction is suspect. General is a subsidiary of continental, so you can feel pretty good that you're getting a quality product.
    The other tires I live by are the continental DWS06 all-season.

    I fell in love with the Altimax about 12 years ago. When I got four new ones, it was a HUGE upgrade to the overpriced Michelins that came on my Honda Accord. The Michelins would hydroplan too easily and were awful on first acceleration (at a traffic light) for squealing or not getting traction, even with non-aggressive starts. Wet traction and water displacement was AWFUL for such a pricey tire.
    Altimax had no real cons for me, not noisy at all, good traction. It's possible better traction due to softer material that would lead to shorter tread life, but I'll trade 5k miles for much better driving for several years.
    I need new tires for my low usage pickup, think I'll put four of these on it. The current cheap/bad Coopers are dry rotting. Probably been on it 8 years, so not knocking the rotting on Cooper, just age, but the so-so traction and floatiness on highway is not good at all.

      @ovp66223 9 месяцев назад

      @@Juanito0318 Great. The ride was HARSH when I got it back from Mavis Tires, but it was only because they had inflated them to over 40 PSI and I got new rear shocks which firmed up the ride a bit. Once I let air out down to 30 PSI or so, rides smooth and quiet. I took a 10 hour round trip drive, mostly interstate/state highways and no issues with noise, firmness just about right and ate up water on the road when it did come a scattered T-storm along the way. No real cons for me, but its a 4cylinder pickup, not a sports car, so take my take with a grain of salt.
      Given how little I drive this weekend truck, not going to have enough time on these tires to give a real review, but not disappointed at all. Feels good to have new tires and not those blowout-in-waiting aged ones they replaced.
      I have Pirelli's on my main driver, a 20 year old Honda Accord, which I have been very happy with, but I'll check Pirelli's v Altimax and choose best deal/ratings at that time (hopefully a few more years).

I can't recommend one over the other as the Altimax I got before the Pirelli was like 14 years ago. I am sure they're not made the same way now. I have no issue with noise or wet roads, my two big concerns. I am less concerned with wear/mileage because even commuting I am not putting enough on my car or truck to worry about wear ratings. I usually replace my tires due to dry rotting on sidewalls before I have to worry about too little tread left.

    I have the 14" RT45s on my 99 Camry highway cruiser. I drive "spiritedly" often in the left lane at higher speeds. I have had several sets of RT43s on this car as well and I received these RT45s the week they were introduced in early July 2022. I installed them 40 days later. I now have about 6000 miles on them at about 99% high speed highway miles. I just removed the front tires and installed my snow tires for the winter season. The RT45s stay on the back and I do not rotate tires.
    Compared to the RT43s, the 45s are definitely a harder compound. After recently installing my snow tires on the front really shows me how quiet both the RT 45s and 43s are compared to the snows. The visual alignment indicators on 45s showed my alignment is good.
    I'm having a little trouble talking about how the 43's and 45's compare because they are very similar and I haven't had any hard ABS braking or fast maneuvering events happen yet. I haven't ridden in any heavy weather events either, so the only thing I can tell you is that when it started getting colder out, I felt the need to change to my snows earlier than with the 43s. That would figure as the 43s were a softer tire. I can also say that with the little rain that I have ridden in, I had no hydroplaning issues whatsoever and the tires felt sure-footed at all speeds. In all the years with the 43s, they were wonderful in the rain and got higher marks in the snow than most other 14" all-season tires. I will keep ya posted about these 45s.
    Lastly, the only thing I'm not fond of is the Replacement Tire indicator on the center strip. First of all, it's not like it's easy to see on my car. It can only be seen when I take the tire off or if I happen to park with my wheels cocked to one side which I never do. I don't personally need a monitor to know when my tires need to be replaced because I know when it's worn from the way it handles, and I certainly don't need to give an inspector or thieving mechanic a written reason on the tire itself to not give me an inspection sticker or keep my car until I buy new tires from them. Anyway, that's just a pet peeve of mine.
    All in all, the 45's seem like a great tire and a great value, but my testing is still on-going.

Of course I can only talk about a mid-size front wheel drive sedan car, so hopefully that's what you have?

      Just put these on my car. Is it just me or do they have a lazy steering response? I don't feel super confident on curvy roads so far. But maybe when it warms up they will handle better since it was still in the 40s when I was trying them and since they do seem extra firm they probably need 65+ degree temps for better performance I'm guessing.

    • @guitartec
      @guitartec Год назад

      @@moonwvlf6919 I would give it some time. Keep in mind that it's a touring tire, not a performance tire. Every car they go on is different and driver expectations are different. Another thing to remember is tires are best at half life. When the tire is new, the tread block deform more when pushed hard, so they may feel lazy in the corners. The sidewall is a bit thin in my book, so be careful not to curb them.

    I just order this tire for my Malibu. I bought these to replace the Assurance tires that came with my car. I'm hoping that I didn't make a mistake. Let me know if I did the right thing.

    Yeah, the Goodyear dealership just put a set of General Altimax on the E30, 1990 BMW 325i.
    14" wheels and they said Goodyear and Michelin don't make any such tire that fits that car anymore; neither does Dunlop nor Continental.
    Altimax was as close to bone stock as they could get.

    Just got these. Anyone else feel like they have a lazy steering response? Or am I just being picky.

      It’s new tire bud, first thing is putting a couple miles on them. I thought the same, now I have maybe 500 miles on them and they respond great, great in the rain and great all around. Solid tire fr

    I used this one my Elantra and replaced the Hankook. Holy cow! This floats on the road like a boat in the water. I feel like I got an a5 upgrade. Hankook is a hard crude piece of crap happy I replaced it with this baby

    Not good tires. I gave general a chance on my f150 and they dry rot within 30k miles. Worst tires I’ve ever purchased. Replaced with nittos and glad I did.

      I would rather go with a more premium tire for most German cars like a Continental, Michelin, or Pirelli.
