Good tutorial on the 396. I've been using one for over a year. I'm happy with it. It's loaded with a bunch of junk that you'll probably never use, but it's there if needed. I mainly use it to display my google maps created routes. Loading created google maps routes can be tricky, it seems to be hit and miss though. THAT'S the video you should do. A LOT of people complain about the route transfer/loading process.
Thanks for taking the time to create this detailed video. I know how time consuming that is. I ride a Honda ADV 150 and I am researching this GPS unit so this was very helpful. I will probably purchase one down the road. It seems like it would be ideal for the type of adventures I enjoy. Take care!

Hi, yes, you can do that by enabling the trip log. Even if you go on the wrong route or in circles, as long as the trip log is enabled, it will record it on the map. Then, in Map layers, you can check the box to show where you have been before. This comes in handy to let you know if you are going in circles in case you are lost during off-roading or hiking.

Good review of a terrible unit. Route calculations take many minutes. To the point that my 5 minute screen times out and I have to start all over again. Shaping a route on-screen is impossible, when I move the screen's view it assumes that I have chosen a shaping point and begins navigating. There is no way to cancel the shaping point without waiting minutes for the calculation to end or start all over again. Loading maps from Google or Calimoto does not work. The route shows as a straight line on the screen. Every few months I give it another try, get frustrated and give up. It is rugged though! I've thrown it against the floor twice and it hasn't broken yet. In all honesty, I have had it for over a year and I have not used it to navigate even once!

Once the battery is fully charged via cradle only then it will sustain its power via USB port to keep the unit ON while doing software updates via USB. As soon as I get my hones on a DezCam 785 LMT-S I will do a video on the cradle repair.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 See, I knew I was talking to the right man...thanks alot. I ordered a new battery, but I will look inside the cradle to see if I can find out whats wrong with it.
Can you download gpx files onto the unit so you can follow the tracks on the map ? Once the tracks are in the unit can you make the tracks into a route that gives you turn by turn routing of the tracks ?
Only if the GPX files is in rout supporting format AKA " Routable". You can get them from Garmin directly, for example there is one called " Tracks 4 Africa" which works great
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 I think you can do it on this gps with any downloaded gpx file . If you tap on (tracks) icon , you can see the gpx tracks you downloaded , tap on the track you want to route and it will show the track on the map . Tap on the wrench icon tap on the icom and scroll down to you see convert to trip ,then you should have 2 options start to finish or finish to start according to where you are at and the direction your wanting to go tap on the one you choose . A screen will pop up so you can name the route once you do that it enter it will start to calibrate the track when its finished a screen will pop up reading the name you typed in for the and route is saved to trip planner , tap OK . Now go back and go into trip planner tap on (saved trips ) you should see the name of the route you gave it under imported trips . tap on the route and tap Go this will open the select next destination page and you can choose where to begin and end . If you click on begin it will put the start flag on the start of the route it will start calibrating . Try it and see if that works .It did for me .
@@Sertao2013 Excellent tip, Thank You!
A friend of mine made me custom Rts. and sent me them via email, how can I install them on my Garmin 396.
Most of the go inside the folder Garmin://.system/gpx or Garmin://.system/poi both folders are hidden and you can't see them when connecting the GPS to your computer. To make the files visible you must watch this ruclips.net/video/4qeJchyKNl0/видео.html
Well Done
Thank You!!
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Thanks for your input!
