You are very welcome! Actually my hands are no better than anyone eases, its just practice. I repaired nearly 2 thousand GPS units in the past 20 years.
I found it was quite easy to replace the battery without disconnecting the screen cable. I used my soldering clamp to hold the screen at a 90 degree angle while removing the old battery and installing the new battery. Took less than 10 minutes.
Thank you for this tutorial. I was able to follow all the steps as shown, but I broke/damaged the black battery lead connector on the motherboard when I tried to reconnect the battery lead (of the replacement battery). Could you tell me if I can get that part soldered on by a repair shop in the DC area?
I am not familial wit the DC area, but worst case you can hardwire the battery wires to them main board. or get something like this www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805535155723.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.65.76dc5b29xrAir9&algo_pvid=69da3d11-ecf0-4c43-8375-4c9ae8366971&aem_p4p_detail=202307291031552434653928140150011619818&algo_exp_id=69da3d11-ecf0-4c43-8375-4c9ae8366971-32&pdp_npi=3%40dis%21USD%214.78%213.68%21%21%214.78%21%21%402101f4a016906519153823306e1f6c%2112000034117710345%21sea%21US%21721036174&curPageLogUid=1KXQEsKS8xTQ&search_p4p_id=202307291031552434653928140150011619818_33
Hi, as a new owner of a garmin 396 your videos are most helpful. Can I ask is it possible to change the battery on this unit, like the 395 as there doesn’t seem to be any videos?
Hi, thanks for the compliments, and yes you can change the battery on a Garmin Zumo 396 as well. Since I didn't have one I couldn't make a video on it, but as soon as I get one I will make a video on that too.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thanks, much appreciated. It works ok on the usb cable but in the cradle it doesn’t seem to hold charge even though the charging indicator is on. It’s like there’s only enough power to keep the screen on but nothing in reserve. So by the end of the day the battery is completely dead even though it’s been on the cradle?
@@antmensah242 Make sure the contacts of the cradle and the back of the GPS unit are clean and shiny. If they have oxidization or dust they can't make good contact. To clean them use a soft cloth and rubbing alcohol do not use sandpaper or other metal objects to clean them because it will ruin the gold plating on the terminals and make it more susceptible to oxidization.
Nice video ! have you changed the 2 contacts that charge the battery at the backside of the zumo ? is the contact availeble as spare part ? best regards from sweden
Thank you, I haven't changed the metal contacts on the back and I don't think they sell them as a spare parts. However you could find the whole back panel or a defective unit on eBay from which you can take our and use those plates.
Hello! Great video, really helpful! But I think that I might have done something wrong... After changing the battery and then starting it again i only get a white screen. I've tried to plugin the cable clip several times but I only get a white screen. Any ideas what I might have done wrong? Best Regards
Great video. I have a cracked screen and need to replace. Garmin does not sell a replacement. Where do you buy the new screen from? I had a Nuvi 1300 I took the screen from and was able to use, but that screen had a line on it. Plus it does not want to come in bright enough to see for some reason.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 It is a Garmin 395LM. Not sure which is part # for the screen. On the front is this number-1403-380 GTTI. On the back is 59 04A30 001 652 1BC1. Then there is a sticker with a bar code on it.

Hi thanks for the video. I have a problem on my zumo 390: when I put in on my motorbike mount, does not get the charge anymore. I get also a new cable bun nothings, tested the cable and there is power on the pins when motorbike is on. Could be something broken on the navigator (usb charging port work). Thanks
You are very welcome, most likely in your case the springs on the contact terminals which at the bottom part of the mount is becoming weak and not making a good contact. You have two options, either to change the entire mounting mechanism, or use the USB Port to power the GPS. For USB port you need a special cable otherwise the GPS will go into PC Sync Mode.
Hi Daniele, did you manage to solve your charging issue? I'm faced with the exact same issue. Zumo does not charge via the mount. My friends Zumo does charge on my mount. Really strange!
@@WimLieben Hi! are you sure the contact area at the zumo is really clean ? i have problem like you but i beive i have to change the 2 small contacts at the backside of the gps.

Hello, Unfortunately, Garmin uses different types of screens on the same exact models. For example, there are 4 different types of screens in Garmin NUVI 255W and they are not interchangeable. The Zumo 395LM uses two different types of screens that are not interchangeable. The Zumo 396 LMT-S uses 3 different screens that are also not interchangeable. So if you need a new screen you will have to take apart the GPS and look at the actual screen part number, to order the correct replacement screen for it.

The LCD Panel cable is not inserted all the way into the socket, it needs to go deep inside the flat socket.
