real history? Fact is, the Bible is what makes the history of Avinu Avraham's descendants important. It is the foundation of all of Israel's history. Without the Bible, there would have been no Israel!

It's interesting to me how so many evangelical Christians in America are so enamored by biblical archaeology from Albright's time and approach but increasingly scholarship is moving away from these views. I don't know how, when and if these new more critical views will filter to American churches.

IF is a thought-provoking, humanity-grounded observer of the past and the present - his discussion of a central “Annales” school of Bloch and LeFevre is prescient. Dealing extensively with the Braudel school, I learned the environmental, social, an individual context to better historical presentations. IF makes you pause and think about your own assumptions as you listen and consider.
The Bible is a amazing book. No matter when you was born it is written in a way that you believe its for your generation. Every time I read it I learn something new. I think much of the Bible pointed to 70AD but there is still some unfulfilled prophecies as well obviously.
Do the "Minimalists" also claim that works of Homer(The Lliad and The Odyssey would be prime examples)Plato,etc were also composed or at least written down in the First century?
More appropriately the rise and fall of ancient Israel in a very short period of time when compared to the nine thousand years clocked by the ancient Canaanites and the Muslims later, in addition to five hundred years under Rome/Byzantium.
The Bible Unearthed was the book that got me into reading the Bible. It was the first book where I saw that maybe the Bible can be decoded scientifically. I found it within like a month or two of it's publication of 2001. There was this bookstore that was a converted theater down by a traintracks. The bookstore was closing, and I was in the Archaeology section. It was the only real Archaeology book in the Archaeology section. The rest were "forbidden archaeology" and "Aliens built the Pyramids." As I've explored Archaeology and Comparative mythology, and interacted with people in the field, I've come to see that Israel Finkelstein is one of the few "Carl Sagan's" in the world much less Archaeology.

Chariots of the Gods for instance has some amazing footage of like some New Zealand or thereabout Natives who made an airplace idol after seeing aircraft for the first time in WWII. It's a play on ignorance; it says "we don't know therefore God(s) or Aliens must have built the pyramids."
The Historical-critical method is amazing to discover in the correct interpretation of the Bible. The method has helped to uncover the cultural and historical background of the Bible, and has deepened our understanding of its literary forms and genres. However, It is very important to note that the historical-critical method should not neglect or overlook the theological and spiritual dimensions of the Bible, and that it recognizes the Bible as a "Divinely Inspired" work that is more than just a product of human history and culture. We cannot dismiss or downplay the supernatural elements of the Bible. While acknowledging the importance of historical and literary analysis, approaches that deny or ignore the supernatural content of the Bible, such as miracles, prophecy, and divine revelation are not plausible. If the Bible is reduced to a purely historical or literary artifact, divorced from its theological and spiritual significance; the certain applications of the historical-critical method that are overly skeptical and dismissive of the supernatural elements of the biblical text will fail to recognize the Bible as a divinely inspired work. Also, as Dr. Israel stated, a “long-term” methodology is important to interpret the Bible as a whole, in its unity and continuity, rather than reducing it to isolated fragments or passages. I acknowledge the value of the critical historical method in biblical analysis, but am certainly against an overly reductionistic or sceptical approach that ignores the theological and spiritual dimensions of the Bible. The recent shitshow made me go on a deep on how exactly we got here. Something seemed incomplete when I see the amount of data we have on Egyptians, philistines, Assyrians, phonecians, but not so much on the 12 tribes. My questions led me to Professor Finkelstein. This should be taught along with the Bible.
You know what's funny? The archaeology in Israel actually generally proves a great lack of evidence that biblical Israel was located in this area. As a descendant of the Roma (gypsies), the only people scattered throughout the world and the only nation to which the biblical curses and other prophecies accurately fit, I don't believe that God's Promised Land is in present-day Israel.
Good lord, I mean, I knew archeology is complex study, but after watching this, I had no idea how extreme complex it can be, especially wh3n addressing ancient history based on material finds and ancient texts....
The bible was written for the people of the time and had to reflet the history knowledge of the time. It could not make up history according to a religous dogme but interpret history according to that dogma.
It strikes me as curious, that he refers to the Bible rather than the Torah, for at least two reasons, the first is that the Bible was composed to both claim ownership of the Scriptures for itself, under the theories of Christian theology, a Christian theology that reinterpreted and misinterpreted certain books of the Torah as a way to legitimize its assertions that Jesus was the Son of God (which was blasphemy to Judaism), and to separate and distance itself from Judaism; and secondly, its curious that the Bible is being used as the lens through the history of Israel is being established, instead of the Torah itself.
You might be reading too much into it. "Bible" is the common English word used to translate the Hebrew word "Tanakh". When Finkelstein refers to the 'Bible', he's referring to the Tanakh. The Tanakh is basically the same as the Christian Old Testament. The Torah is part of the Tanakh. Just as Christians use the entire Old Testament and not just the Pentateuch, so Jews use the entire Tanakh, and not just the Torah. That's the only significance of 'Bible'.

Why concentrate on Judaism? I would like to hear about all the ancient Semitic tribes and communities. The “Bible” is not history. We do not really know if Abraham existed. Archeology and science are the key, not one Semitic community.
The talks between Finkelstein and Adams focused on archeology that could be relevant to understand the bible better. They do not denigrate other archeology unconnected to the bible. . . . The question if Abraham existed is indeed an interesting one and is answered by most scholars today with No. If you listen to more of the talks, you would hear it from Finkelstein himself, too. The oldest historical figures from the bible are from the 10. Century BC, King David and Pharao Shishak/Sheshonq.
Interesting conversation! Now to my own critique- its 'easy to see' with Mr. Finkkelstein Why Jew's per se DO Not Believe in God and specifically YAHWEH! With ALL the 'ifs' most Israeli's and American Jew's would rather Live here & no "in The World"- GodLess!!!! As a Believer in Yeshua I can admit that Christianity as it is and has been now for centuries is Not very attractive and particularly to Jews; indeed, it isn't very attractive to most people as it is presented! The only way Israel could fall is because of disobedience. Assuming one believes in the "living" God. Its blessings and curses. God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, `The LORD, the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, So what disobedience resulted in God "allowing" Rome into Israel and what followed?
@@KEDEMChannel I am one who speaks of God as historic reality. He lives. If anyone defeated the Israelites its because "God" ordained it and clearly the cause is disobedience. Israel became a nation in the bible as in the "rise" of Israel because "God" ordained it. Therefore I would think the study should end with a desire to reestablish a connection with God as a priority. As it seems your lives and outlook are in "His" hands. The absence of a high priest on earth and true prophets should have you seeking contact with God through prayer for answers. Once you loose connection you create your own traditions and rule by your own authority.
I started with the first five minutes, in which he called the Jewish tradition a 'storage pot', told us definitely with an uncovered head what the purpose of the Bible is, and proclaimed with certainty that the Bible is not from G-d but rather is the work of human authors. I think he should stick to archaeology. As a theoretical physicist I would love to at least teach him about empirical science so that he can understand what we know and what we don't know. The reason why the world cannot decide whether archaeology proves or disproves the Bible is because the findings are inherently ambiguous and in an information-scarce regime. I have seen a very reasonable theory by an acclaimed physicist turn out to be off by 100,000 times when measured by an experimentalist - arrogance is the primary obstacle to truth in this world.
You feel uncomfortable because your unquestioned assumptions are challenged. What is at stake for you? Identify that and restart from there and get ready for more of what this researcher telling us. Bible is not a history book. It is a theological narrative. This should concentrate your mind on the most essential reasons why we have religious faith.
@@Magic-lg9lw On the contrary, I am very aware of the archaeology and completely comfortable with it. My flashers go off when speculation is presented as empirical science. If you would talk to mainstream archaeologists as I have, or if you have spent years in scientific research, you would understand that a true comparison of the archaeologically reconstructed narrative with the historical reality would yield major discrepancies and extraordinary surprises. Our inability to quantify the rate of discrepancies (due to this being an information-sparse regime with informational dependencies) means that the findings lend support the Biblical narrative's complete accuracy at least as much as the opposite. Thus, Israel Finkelstein is effectively taking covid test that yields 'positive' whether or not a person has covid, and we all know that such a test would be worthless and unconvincing.t
@@zepstein Do you question the fact that at least some of the major events recounted in the Bible maybe referring to some events of the several centuries past and retold by the scribes at the time of the writing? This in itself says that they are theological narratives and they don't represent exact historical facts. Do you have a religious faith or some sort of ideology? @@jonathanadams8752 Hi Jonathan, I'm not sure why one would assume that these are events retold. Obviously one seeking a minimalist narrative will attempt make that claim, but there are many indications within the texts of knowledge of ancient Egypt (circa 1300 BCE). It is also not clear to me that historical fact is not represented. Many understand the archaeological record to be supportive of the biblical narrative and many understand it to be counter to the biblical narrative, which is the expected result of the fact that excavation results and reconstructions are inherently so darn ambiguous. As for ideology, my understanding of physics and its implications led me from a secular ideology to a Jewish ideology. I wouldn't object if others come to other conclusions; according to the Torah, it is only the more thoughtful , self-disciplined, and morally refined people who will arrive at faith. Interestingly, recent cognitive studies affirm this postulate.

Now, you say you're a physicist, yet here you are going on about *two* areas beyond the scope of your (alleged) profession - history and archaeology. Three if you count theology. Is this because of your considered righteousness before God? In Rev 11 Jerusalem, the Holy city, is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt. Zech 14 See, a day is coming for the Lord, when the plunder taken from you will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped; half the city shall go into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. The recent shitshow made me go on a deep on how exactly we got here. Something seemed incomplete when I see the amount of data we have on Egyptians, philistines, Assyrians, phonecians, but not so much on the 12 tribes. My questions led me to Professor Finkelstein.

You know what's funny? The archaeology in Israel actually generally proves a great lack of evidence that biblical Israel was located in this area. As a descendant of the Roma (gypsies), the only people scattered throughout the world and the only nation to which the biblical curses and other prophecies accurately fit, I don't believe that God's Promised Land is in present-day Israel.

The bible was written for the people of the time and had to reflet the history knowledge of the time. It could not make up history according to a religous dogme but interpret history according to that dogma.

It strikes me as curious, that he refers to the Bible rather than the Torah, for at least two reasons, the first is that the Bible was composed to both claim ownership of the Scriptures for itself, under the theories of Christian theology, a Christian theology that reinterpreted and misinterpreted certain books of the Torah as a way to legitimize its assertions that Jesus was the Son of God (which was blasphemy to Judaism), and to separate and distance itself from Judaism; and secondly, its curious that the Bible is being used as the lens through the history of Israel is being established, instead of the Torah itself.
You might be reading too much into it. "Bible" is the common English word used to translate the Hebrew word "Tanakh". When Finkelstein refers to the 'Bible', he's referring to the Tanakh. The Tanakh is basically the same as the Christian Old Testament. The Torah is part of the Tanakh. Just as Christians use the entire Old Testament and not just the Pentateuch, so Jews use the entire Tanakh, and not just the Torah. That's the only significance of 'Bible'.
Being kicked from both sides is the safe place, not necessarily the right place.

Why concentrate on Judaism? I would like to hear about all the ancient Semitic tribes and communities. The “Bible” is not history. We do not really know if Abraham existed. Archeology and science are the key, not one Semitic community.

. . . The question if Abraham existed is indeed an interesting one and is answered by most scholars today with No. If you listen to more of the talks, you would hear it from Finkelstein himself, too. The oldest historical figures from the bible are from the 10. Century BC, King David and Pharao Shishak/Sheshonq.

Interesting conversation! Now to my own critique- its 'easy to see' with Mr. Finkkelstein Why Jew's per se DO Not Believe in God and specifically YAHWEH! @@KEDEMChannel I am one who speaks of God as historic reality. He lives. If anyone defeated the Israelites its because "God" ordained it and clearly the cause is disobedience. Israel became a nation in the bible as in the "rise" of Israel because "God" ordained it. Therefore I would think the study should end with a desire to reestablish a connection with God as a priority. As it seems your lives and outlook are in "His" hands. The absence of a high priest on earth and true prophets should have you seeking contact with God through prayer for answers. Once you loose connection you create your own traditions and rule by your own authority.

I started with the first five minutes, in which he called the Jewish tradition a 'storage pot', told us definitely with an uncovered head what the purpose of the Bible is, and proclaimed with certainty that the Bible is not from G-d but rather is the work of human authors. I think he should stick to archaeology. As a theoretical physicist I would love to at least teach him about empirical science so that he can understand what we know and what we don't know. The reason why the world cannot decide whether archaeology proves or disproves the Bible is because the findings are inherently ambiguous and in an information-scarce regime. I have seen a very reasonable theory by an acclaimed physicist turn out to be off by 100,000 times when measured by an experimentalist - arrogance is the primary obstacle to truth in this world.
You feel uncomfortable because your unquestioned assumptions are challenged. What is at stake for you? Identify that and restart from there and get ready for more of what this researcher telling us. Bible is not a history book. It is a theological narrative. This should concentrate your mind on the most essential reasons why we have religious faith.
@@Magic-lg9lw On the contrary, I am very aware of the archaeology and completely comfortable with it. My flashers go off when speculation is presented as empirical science. If you would talk to mainstream archaeologists as I have, or if you have spent years in scientific research, you would understand that a true comparison of the archaeologically reconstructed narrative with the historical reality would yield major discrepancies and extraordinary surprises. Our inability to quantify the rate of discrepancies (due to this being an information-sparse regime with informational dependencies) means that the findings lend support the Biblical narrative's complete accuracy at least as much as the opposite. Thus, Israel Finkelstein is effectively taking covid test that yields 'positive' whether or not a person has covid, and we all know that such a test would be worthless and unconvincing.t
@@zepstein Do you question the fact that at least some of the major events recounted in the Bible maybe referring to some events of the several centuries past and retold by the scribes at the time of the writing? This in itself says that they are theological narratives and they don't represent exact historical facts. Do you have a religious faith or some sort of ideology? @@jonathanadams8752 Hi Jonathan, I'm not sure why one would assume that these are events retold. Obviously one seeking a minimalist narrative will attempt make that claim, but there are many indications within the texts of knowledge of ancient Egypt (circa 1300 BCE). It is also not clear to me that historical fact is not represented. Many understand the archaeological record to be supportive of the biblical narrative and many understand it to be counter to the biblical narrative, which is the expected result of the fact that excavation results and reconstructions are inherently so darn ambiguous. As for ideology, my understanding of physics and its implications led me from a secular ideology to a Jewish ideology. I wouldn't object if others come to other conclusions; according to the Torah, it is only the more thoughtful , self-disciplined, and morally refined people who will arrive at faith. Interestingly, recent cognitive studies affirm this postulate.

@@KEDEMChannel I understand your unbelief. Normally I suggest Rev 11 for signs that can't be mistaken for the day of the Lord. So I will offer the words of the one you claim as your God. Is this because of your considered righteousness before God? In Rev 11 Jerusalem, the Holy city, is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt.

When you view the mount of olives split in two as from a violent earthquake then you will know the Lord's coming is imminent. Though I don't expect it in our lifetime so while you will probably think what's going to happen to me when your life in the body is ending, I will state, "Lord Jesus into your hands I commit my spirit". At that point you will know we were stating truth to you for "your" good not harm as we believe in a resurrection of the righteous to life and the wicked to the 2nd death.
