Anyone have thoughts on an Assyrian temple of Shalmanu (or one built by Shalmanesser) giving rise to the 'legend' of Solomon and his construction of an opulent temple in Jerusalem? Perhaps a temple built in the Assyrian heartland or in one of the nearer vassal states of Assyria?

Looks like Saul, David and Solomon do not fit into the 10th century. Many things point to the latter half of the 9th century. What if they lived in the latter half of the 9th century? This is an intriguing thought exercise and seems to sync the biblical story to the archaeology.

If Saul, David and Solomon were only ruling over Judah, who were ruling over Israel before Omri?

Who is thinking or claiming that Saul was only ruling over Juda? His power center was further north, he might have actually had little power in Judah.
Finkelstein seems to believe that Saul was predominantly a northern king, because he explains passages in the Book of Samuel that are favorable to Saul by the refugees from Israel who lived in Judah after 722 BC. They had traditions of praising Saul and criticizing David that could not be neglected when composing the Book of Samuel, because the refugees were so educated and numerous and needed to be integrated in Judah.
