YES! Thank you for showing what the manual DOESN'T show you. Those are the things that make us second guess our work. Thank you for the longer format videos. I like them all, and most don't even apply to me. Lol
Neat trick with the hacksaw Stu ! You are absolutely correct people do like to criticise etc but you know what.....all the comments I have read on your channel are positive, like me other viewers are genuinely grateful for your tuitions. 🍻 cheers
Many thanks! I agree with your choice to show "warts" and all. A manufactures video often done on a brand new engine is of little use and I feel a bit dishonest. After all, who needs repairs on a "new" engine? Repairs are needed after years of ware and tear, around here that mean in salt water. So corrosion is the norm making everything that much more difficult. Your video put truth to the difficulties one finds in repairs in the real world - Many thanks again
+Karl S Thanks Karl. Yes, when I read a line in a manual that says, "and then gently slide out the bearing carrier" or some such I start to think I have something wrong when it won't come out for love nor money I start to think, "I must be doing something wrong" where in truth it just isn't that easy. Sometimes I think corrosion is stronger than my welds! ;)
i just talked to my buddy & hes gunna take a look at the key & make sure its connected to the pump. And ill hear for the motor running when i press the trim button, then manually raise the motor 4or5 times to blead it. After all that ill definitely let u know the outcome. Again thanx a bunch & hope me & my buddy can get it working. Then i can take u fishing! Lol
Thanks for video, i replaced my power trim motor other one was completely seized put fluid in ( Dextron II hope thats ok? ) i can hear the motor working but the rams arent going up and down much and lots of froth coming back out filler? .... I bought the motor with tilt trim not working ,.... from what i have described does it sound like it needs new seals on the rams?
basically we had to line up the rubber gasket on the bottom of the electric motor to make sure it sealed & screw the 4 bolts in & plug the electric wires in that goes through the outboard & to the battery. The trim motor we got & bolted in came assembled already. We didnt do anything with the hydraulic ram that trims the motor.
Hi Dangar Stu. I have two 15 hp outboards on my Catamaran and one of the motors isn't tilting all the way up. Pump makes a labouring sound as if it is at its limit. Both motors used to lift all the way up. do you think this could be a low oil issue?
Hi, Question i hope you may know the answer to. Are all these yamaha single ram power trims the same size. I want to replace the gas asssit on my 2006 40 3 cyl for a power trim and there are a few around, but all seem to be from different size yamaha's. some 60's 4 strokes, Do you think they will fit?
it was assembled already & working, when i bought the boat. i used it for a year or so then it wouldnt trim. my buddy took apart the old motor & showed me that the magnets inside were in pieces& crumbled. so he got me a new motor & me & my uncle replaced just the electric motor of the tilt/trim system & didnt touch the ram.
Sounds like that is you problem then. That keyway is loose inside and is easy to lose, it may have stayed attached to the old electric motor and may be missing completely. They can also be tricky to line up.
I have a 1974 50 hp Johnson outboard motor. It doesn’t have power tilt and trim and I would like to know if a power tilt and trim unit from another Johnson could be made to work on my motor.
The solenoids or relays inside the outboard motor click when i press the up/down trim button but doesnt trim up or down just makes the noise like its trimming. So someone told me that the relays r still good. So what do u thinks wrong? Thanx & ur videos good & r very helpful!
Probably right but you should check with a voltmeter that the proper voltage is getting through the relay. But yeah, there's a higher likelihood you have an issue with the motor or you've lost fluid pressure.
once again one of ur vids is there to answer my questions! pretty shore this is now the 2nd time in a week i have said this to u hahahahah thanks again stu :)
I have a 2006 bf Honda and the water hose came off and filled the motor compartment with salt water. It has stopped the trim from working. I first went to the relay and found corroded wires so I replaced it. Now I have power 12volts and still the tilt motor will not respond. What do you think?
Jess Knight The trick is to test each part in isolation using a multimeter. Does the switch work, does the relay activate when the switch is pressed, does the relay pass current through when activated, and finally does the motor respond when you put power directly to it. Also check that you didn't simply blow a fuse in the outboard from the water shorting something. Let me know how you get on. Oddly, my "Motor won't crank" video will give you some tips on doing these tests.
Hi Dangar and all guys. Im new person at those outboards and boats, but got in to one of my projects, so be it... but as I noticed Yamaha 50 and 60Hp kinda good engines ans I have two now for low price, but diy needs. On 60hp I want to try to install power tilt from other Yamaha. Guys need your helps and advise, or Im chasing "Poseidon" for nothing 😂!!! Im based in UK London. Any communication will be appreciated... obviously via email etc, for a faster communication. One more time thx for Dangar.
I'm not sure if RUclips is the best place for this, but I want to know how to install steering, and trim and tilt onto a 15hp motor, can this be done and where can I find info on doing it? Just watch videos like this?
I'm hoping to do a forward control conversion video soon. There may be some around on RUclips already, but they can be a little bit different depending on the model of outboard, that's the big trouble. This video might help you with the steering. ruclips.net/video/VJ8UruO-_a0/видео.html
I have a 91 force 35 HP motor. After replacing the seals on my tilt trim and as i lower it, it start to shake and jump. When the motor come down to a fully stop, it makes squeaky noise like a squeaky door. Any help will highly appreciate it. Any suggestions?
So I have a 1985 evinrude 50hp the tilt and trim makes the sound like it's working but it's not going up or down where should I start to get it working I was told it has a new motor this is my first boat with tilt and trim but I have no idea even how to take it off to check it
Which seals did you replace. It could be the ram seals or the bypass valve seals causing this. It could also simply be that it hasn't been bled properly yet and still has air in it.
@@DangarMarine there's only 3 o rings. There's a small o ring inside the cap which is go around the shaft and 1 around the cylinder and 1 around the end cap. I had filled with fluids couple of times and lift it up and down couple of times.
Hi Stew...thanks to your videos i could manage to fix a few bits and pieces.but iam.still struggeling to find out WHY my yamaha power trim tilt works fine whilst not driving but not when driving...not enough current going through to energize motor?i had a similar issue with power cable(corroded) which coild start engine properly..thanks in advance-btw still owe you a beer when you are in Adelaide;-)
I have a 1975 Johnson 40hp outboard that doesn't have trim. Can I put a power trim from another motor on it? I know about the costly aftermarket plates I can use but wondering if I can use the trim off of another Johnson outboard that does have trim. Thanks!
You can usually add a trim unit to most outboards, but it will need to be compatible. You can usually check this by looking up both outboards and seeing if the part numbers for the trim unit are the same.
David Lent Hi David, this is the video where I reinstall the power head and then connect the trim tilt wires to the relay: ruclips.net/video/VYB4unYt8xQ/видео.html
So was it all ready assembled as a unit or was the electric motor off? There is a little key that connects the motor to the hydraulic pump. If you can hear the motor turning but it isn't moving it means either the bypass is still open or maybe this key is not in place properly.
Jack Sexton I have a Johnson 1988 with 115HP the trim gauge wires are missing going to the console can I just tap into the brown and white back were the gauge runs to the Relays and run a new wire to the console and hook it to the signal stud on the gauge ?

Hi Bob. If it is brand new it could just be a bleeding problem. Try opening the manual bypass and then lifting the motor up by hand and letting it drop down with gravity four or five times. After that close the bypass off and try again.
YES! Thank you for showing what the manual DOESN'T show you. Those are the things that make us second guess our work. Thank you for the longer format videos. I like them all, and most don't even apply to me. Lol
Thanks for this. The "intentional" content is great, but watching someone with smarts solve problems and improvise is invaluable.
Thanks David. One thing you can count on is that working on old outboards never goes to plan!
I surely enjoy your videos. Sharing your knowledge has already saved me lots of money Many thanks!!
Fantastic video. Thanks for being so thorough. It helps a new comer understand everything. I appreciate you not skipping steps.

Thanks for saying it's not just hard for me, but it is for everyone. Made me give it another try.

Let me know how you get on, reading the comments below it does sound like the key is either misaligned or missing altogether.

I would certainly start by checking the oil, but if it is low you will also need to find where it is leaking from.
Can you install power trim on every motor, for example a Yamaha F25 Motor ?
Thank you very much for posting the video and the detailed explanation!
+Jose C Fernandez You're welcome Jose.
So you did have to get a new (or used) pivot tube? Or whatever it is called so it would go back & forth? tnx
Any information regarding how to bleed the Trim tilt. I need to remove the motor and want to take the job with as much info as possible. Thanks

Very good put simply, could you also show where the wires hook up to in the motor?

It could be that they are dry and will smooth out as oil reaches them.
Very good video I have a 40 hp yamaha enduro and I want to put a power trim, but there is no place to place it that is placed.
so can I add power trim and tilt to a 2001 30 hp Yamaha 2 stroke

Is this style with one rod only tilt or has it also a trim function?
Grt video! I having a problem with my power trim. It doesn't go up fast enough and it can't go all the way up,. Can u tell me what wrong with that.
After replacing the seals on my tilt and trim, it doesn't hold up and still slowly drops. What have I done wrong?

Mercury dealers are the only ones that can supply the original part.

Yes, keep the fill cap closed.
