Removing Mercury Outboard To Fix Power Trim

  • This is not a how-to. I know there are other ways to access the trim assembly and get it off the outboard with out removing it from the boat. I did it this way because it was what I was most comfortable with. Have a nice day!
    Buying a used boat certainly comes with its issues. I knew the trim motor would need to be replaced eventually, but I didn't except it to need to be replaced within the first few weeks of ownership. You live and learn... Crazy time crunch with this repair. I had a charter booked a in a couple days and this needed to get done asap! Of course with my luck I was thrown a curve ball in the form of a broken bolt, and this cost twice as much to fix and took twice the amount of time. This Mercury Outboard needs to go asap!

    I personally like the boat & engine maintenance and "real world look" type stuff. Way to keep it real.

    I've noticed the more successful RUclipsrs do what they do but also take their subscriber's on what they call their journey it's funny I love hunting and fishing videos but I've gotten hooked on catch and cook from people like yak motley, blue Gabe and Kelly deer meat for dinner and others they involve people in their every day life and it's amazing how we the subscribers become involved watching their kid and families grow you have a great personality and there's no reason you shouldn't have 2 hundred thousand subs just food for thought

    Enjoyed the vid. Got my first boat a few months back and, like yours, it's just over 20 years old and has (had, now) a lot of dodgy, broken, and plain worn out bits. Fortunately I've always been mechanically handy so I've been able to do it all myself (other than tig welding the 15" crack in the chine... ouch! No wonder it was filling up with water!) so was good to see how you went about doing the trim motor, since I'll probably have to do the same thing soon. I had a similar broken bolt when replacing the anode on the bottom of the engine mount... my repair wasn't as attractive as yours though as I was upside down under the boat with a hand drill and alloy shavings in my eyes... ended up putting in a helicoil, not pretty but it got it done.
    Old boats are actually holes in the water into which you throw money.

    Thanks Bro!...I knew I had to take the motor off but had a couple of mechanics tell me the assembly would come out the front ...

      There's another way to remove it, by taking one of the transom brackets off of the motor. You still need to hoist up the motor to do that. It's such a pain.

    I guess you didnt do a video on getting this boat or getting rid of the old boat?

    • @FloBass
      @FloBass  2 года назад +2

      I never got a chance to film anything about the old boat before I sold it. I received an offer literally less than a day after I put it up. But it doesn't really make any sense to do a video on the Alumacraft since you can't get one right now. Might never be available again. I'll do a video on the new boat eventually, but being my own boss its difficult to give up a day when you don't get paid for it. Hopefully before end of Sept I'll have a vid up on the skiff.

    Nice ! Can you please tell me how you got that lower trim shaft out without pulling the unit all the way off. I got a leak there on mine & by the looks you got it out before you pulled anything because the big hydraulic ram was hanging. Much help would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @justindodson2930
      @justindodson2930 Год назад

      Also this is the lower shaft that slides thru the lower part of the ram & has a tiny pin on one side. The shaft itself has like 6 Orings on it

    • @FloBass
      @FloBass  Год назад

      It was a pain. But all you have to do is knock the roll pins out on the starboard side and then you can use a large punch to knock that shaft out. It comes out on the port side. It takes some finessing...

    • @justindodson2930
      @justindodson2930 Год назад

      Well that's good to know. But I'm guessing you did unbolt the whole unit from motor bracket to give you room to knock it out?? I really appreciate you messaging me back.

    What brand drill bit did you use? I had the same issue and could not drill out the old bolt. I finally just mangled it enough to get a helocoil in there.

    Boat mechanic here and I didn't watch the video, but there is absolutely no reason to remove the outboard. Whether to fix, replace the trim unit.
