- For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... Another Yamaha Revstar 620 came up for sale, at a weight of 7lb, which I think is a bit lighter than the one I've been playing. I decided it might be an opportunity to compare guitars....

Let me know which you prefer - the Purple strap one (the lighter 7lb guitar) or the Cream strap one (the heavier guitar)....I can't keep both!
@johnnathancordy Had a 620 Brick Burst and a 720b with bigsby. The 620 was ~3.5 kg and had a slimmer neck, 720b was 4.4 kg and definitely had a chunkier neck or thicker finish on it. Both awesome, however had to let them go as they both had, curiously, the same dead spot, around the octave of the G string.
With these my 2 cents is: can be great however quality will depend on what the individual who worked on it had for lunch :-)
I was drifting off.. soft jazzy leads can cause that. But I couldn’t tell much difference, both pretty full of sweet tones.
Alembic's contention, I think, has been that for an electric instrument any resonance lost to the body is a bad thing. Hence, heavy neck laminates (ebony, purpleheart), neck-thru construction, and massive brass hardware. String vibration is kept where it should be: between the nut and the bridge.
Those revstars sound great, doesn't really matter which is which.
Both great guitars. First one sounds rounder and deeper to my ears, second one a bit brighter. In general terms I think I prefer the first one... but the last passage you played using the bridge pickup in the second guitar sounded absolute glorious. Probably you can make sound both the same by tweaking the amp's eq and guitar tone pot, so take the one you feel more confortable with. You can't go wrong.
Clicked for the experiment, stayed for the playing, those lines are smoooooth
2nd one sounded brighter to me. Both sounded great, just slightly different voices. I couldn't choose one of the other based on those tones. Maybe choose the one that plays better. My Revstar plays like a dream.
I'm quite late to the party, but am commenting anyway because your playing was wonderful. Thanks for that, I've listened 3 times in a row. (Available evidence is proof that you've spent much more time playing guitar than you have using a phone camera :-) As for which is better, no way to tell via youtube. Any sound diff's can be EQ'd to nil. And youtube can't tell us how it felt in the room and felt in your hands. Whichever suits you best won't have anything to do with weight. I'm a semi-old fart, and we used to think more weight was better. So we did lots of dumb stuff like hanging a pound of Grovers on the far end of an SG. Silly us. Over time, I first decided that it was all BS and weight didn't matter either way. But I've since become more radical and now favor lighter guitars... all things being equal, of course... which they never are, of course. So, are you still here? What did you do? And do you still have it?
I think I liked the purple strap guitar the most, I felt like it had slightly more treble to its sound, and was a little less "muddy" than the cream strap version. Of course, feel is always the most important since you could always change your amp controls, but you can't change what the neck feels like! Since you bought the other Revstar on Ebay, are you going to resell it, or are you able to return it?
Hi Johnathan .....Sold my LesPaul Trad Goldtop (way too dark sounding and just couldn't bond) and bought the exact same Revstar about a month ago ....love it ( solid well made)...but I'm an eternal tinkerer ....so ditched the dry switch ....put on a pigtail wraparound bridge( the yamaha one rattled a bit ).... new CTS pots , OX 4 Low winds and a paper in oil emerson cap.....we shall see ....
I think they sound 95% exactly the same. Especially listening through youtube (although I have pretty decent speakers). I'd say as to which to keep, it likely will be completely subjective to you. Maybe how it feels in your hands and to play. Or maybe which inspires you slightly more than the other. But as for an objective sound comparison I think they sound almost the same. Anyway keep rockin! Love your style man. And you got sum skills homie. Inspiring.
I forgot which guitar is which cus I got too distracted makin love to the sweet sweet sounds of D'Angelo.
I think I prefer the purple strap one? It's got that tubby low end thing that feels nice under the fingers for this sorta thing.

It really depends on the guitar, but I fnd heavier (8lbs+) guitars definitely have a stronger fundamental and tend to sustain longer. In much the same way that putting locking tuners on will give you that focussed attack. My favourite guitars are all heavier ones. Nothing conscious, I just found the keepers were all heavier by coincidence. My strat is 8lbs. My ES335 is 8.6lbs. My Les Paul is only 7.4lbs though, and I do not like it! I do have an Epi Dot that weighs only 7.1lbs which is extremely punchy and loud and I love that. But basically, yeah, heavier ftw. I hate the heavy tuners/locking tuners effect on tone btw. Good for metal but nothing much else. :)
wozzlepop I think it has much more to do with other factors rather than weight. My Suhr and EBMM guitars have more sustain and ring louder than my Gibson and PRS. My les Paul that has more more weight does have quite a bit more bass come through the pickups, so much so that it is borderline unplayable compared to my other guitars, and it doesn’t sustain quite as good as the others.
@@ryanbaker81 Yes, its certainly not as simple as identifying one variable in the mix. I agree! I have some light guitars that sound great too. But then you have to take in to consideration the pickups - where is their frequency responce? What kind of inductance, how are they set (high or low), wire coating (plain enamel, polysol), gauss, grade of magnet etc.
The way I think about 'tone wood', just subjectively speaking as I am not remotely clued up on the science of it, is that the body of an electic guitar (solid body) does not ADD anything to the amplified tone. What it does do though is ATTENUATE. Certain woods, density of woods, moisture content, finish types, thicknesses etc. all contribute toward a final resonant frequency and the particular bias of that frequency in conjunction with all other factors (scale length, neck thickness and density, nut and hardware composition, fret size and shape).
I find that heavier bodies 'reflect' more of the fundamentals and so, I guess, they 'absorb' fewer frequencies than lighter or less dense bodies do. Now, like I said, sometimes those lighter bodies do the opposite and enhance the tone presumably by virtue of - by chance mostly - resonanting at the same or a complimentary frequency as the strings/pickups/hardware. Then you get projection thats audibly 'better' than when that isn't the case. Shoot, weight might be a total red herring and that may be the true 'deciding factor' ..
Finally, how much of that influences the final amplied tone after its turned in to a signal and spooged through a bunch of PCB and vacuum tube? Not a lot is my guess. But the tactile factor is huge when it comes to how we judge even an electric guitar. One of the reasons people go nuts for those vintage instruments is the fact they 'give back' in a way modern ones don't so much and that in turn creates a kind of loop in our brains that says 'this is physically pleasing but also, because I can 'feel' the instrument moving with me, I can sort of hear that too'. :)
Forget guitars weight , I enjoyed by your playing .
I bought one but returned it because the guitar was heavy and the neck was wayyyy too chunky. Hand fatigue is real!

I will always choose lighter unless the guitar is terrible. The neck is the most important factor for me. Slim necks are give me less hand fatigue.

I prefer the Purple strap one (the lighter 7lb guitar) , looks nice and sounds sometimes slightly better than the other one
Headphones and You Tube compression considered they are almost the same. Differences I hear are is in the fact that they are two seperate guitars which can never be identical in tone. Purple if I had to make a choice but the feel is going to be way more important in you decision I would suspect..👍🇦🇺

On my good reference speakers, the heavier guitar sounds warmer and thicker, the lighter sounds slightly toppier. But it's so subjective......
Both sound very good.
If I were choosing I'd go for the heavier mainly because I think it would contrast well with my other main guitars which are strats. I'l still searching for the "right" LP / humbucker style guitar for "me". I'll know it when I find it, .................but I can't explain it!

My opinion was the first one you played sounded better, but, the difference wasn't significant. Suspect you liked the second one.
My choice is usually the lighter guitar. Have found many to be extremely resonant and they end up being keepers. As for the neck, although the general shape of the neck is usually made on CNC machines, final sanding is almost universally done by hand which may account for the difference. Checked out the weight of multiple Revstars from an online dealer and every one was 8 pounds or over.
I need to weigh the other one but don't have any scales in the house....
I typically go for lighter guitars...

thanks for this - interesting comparison for tone nerds like me. They both sound great. As to which sounds better - well you can prolly trim either to sound like the other with minute EQ adjustments. For over drive and in a band, possibly the slightly brighter guitar? In reality no one is going to notice, not even you, in a band situation. For cleaner stuff, and for a capella, the heavier one is prolly a little sweeter to the ear? I dunno, i think weight prolly outweighs those subtle tonal contrasts...
My newest guitar is being shipped to me, but thinking a Les Paul type guitar is next and the Revstar has been on my list. Just was looking at different videos for some and saw your name, knew I had to check it out. I can’t tell much of a difference between the two, probably because I was just so impressed with your playing that I forgot to pay attention. You always sound like you have something to say. You ever do lessons?
I haven’t listened too carefully, and I should go back and check because our ears can deceive us, but my initial reaction is the heavy one sounds better. More articulate, less muddy but sweet enough. Neither guitar is harsh by any means, but the lighter one sounds a little too subdued to me. But I’m not a guitarist. What do I know?
I liked both of them via the sound, but I liked the heavier one better - it sounded more warm overall- I have this same color burnt charcoal RS620 and I leave it on the stand in my room and play it the most all the time. At first, I wasn't sure I liked it, I found that when I moved the bridge all the way down to the body as far as it could possibly go- then adjusted the saddles appropriately + plus truss rod weight relief (it was like my other Les Paul's as far as the feel) I am not a big jumbo fret guy at all. Now I just practice on it all the time and got used to it. Maybe I got to lazy to put it away, but it is the only guitar out on my stand.
By the way Johnathan, which one did you end up keeping out of the two?
Heavily considering purchasing one of these. How's the neck? Chunky/slim? neck heavy? are the Humbuckers pretty versatile?
If I'm looking to buy one, is there a way to spot which is which just by looking at one or do you always have to have a scale with you? Maybe there's something in the serial number that gives it away?
Possibly a chance your picking hand has warmed up and less stiff so you’re striking the strings with slightly less attack for the second guitar? It does seem to “bloom” better

johnnathancordy all off my electrics tend to be on the heavy side- I had been beginning to think I had cloth ears with all the recent “lighter is better” fashion

Ive been eyeing the revstar for a while, but been saying mixed reviews about it. I feel that the latter guitar has more sustain and roundness to the sound
Try one - I think they feel similar to a Les Paul, but with better upper fret access

I think they vary quite a bit, I've read some people got quite heavy ones, these ones were more on the light/medium side of things
I've never weighed my guitars. I'm too busy playing them.
