Personally, I think you and your Dad are doing amazing work on this RV! I'm enjoying following the progress on this project! Cannot wait to see the final finished product!!!!
Best thing you ever bought was that wrecked camper. Just made bringing the RV back to life in a modern and safe way that much easier. Old Skool outside and modern inside. 👍👏
If you didn't install one, I highly recommend a LP detector with an auto LP shutoff solenoid, they are normally standard equipment in RVs and Boats. If theres a gas leak or something gets left on it will auto shut off the propane.
I would also route the propane hoses under the vehicle instead through that storage area. And bring it in the vehicle only where needed. Especially the high pressure for the outside connection. It just minimizes the chances of gas inside if there are any leaks. Also, leak gauge where when you shut off the propane, it checks if the system keeps the pressure.
Definitely isolate those tanks. My wife was horribly burned and almost died when ours exploded while we were cooking in it from gasses that collected in the cabinets above the tanks. When the fumes hit the pilot light on the stove it went boom! Enjoying the build and hardly ever comment on things but I was hoping my comment and the work you did isolating those ranks will keep someone else from getting hurt. Stay safe and great build.
I was born in 1960 and gifted a early life of camping . My parents drove us across the USA in 1969 in a 1966 VW bus with a canvas sunroof top and windows on the roof . My parents slept in a pop tent while my older brother slept on a hand made box that was built by the previous owner . Absolutely the bottom of the barrel ! We had a blast and a trip I still enjoy such memories of . ct. To California and back ! Spent five years camping through Canada the east coast of America . Every summer . When these came out it was like "Holy Crap ! A/c and a toilet !plus a kitchen and all the comforts of a hotel room . So this is to me so amazing to see all the creature comforts that the rich people owned ! I'm so proud of your work along side of your dad ! Working side by side being the BEST PART ! I just wanted to send a respectful note of appreciation for this labor of love ! May the Lord bless you all and thanks again ! I A Loving This ! A faithful subscriber ! God Bless You All !
@@johnnybravo3869That's not true. 😂 only I'm America is it normal to find mice/rats nest inside a tail pipe. 😂 You will almost never ever have a mouse nest blocking exhaust in Canada. 😂😂
I'm loving this build. Can't wait to see your family go on a trip. One suggestion I have is for the propane and battery shelves. Put a locking pin to keep them from moving when in transit.
Really glad you’re enjoying!! We are so excited to enjoy it as a family 😃 Thanks so much for the suggestion and great point! We will most definitely be doing that!
Warning!! Make sure you extend the top and sides of that water heater vent to actually vent outside. Right now, it looks short and the hot gases will vent up between the wall panel and the exterior wall. On a normal RV, the exterior wall typically is more vertical so that short little flange can direct those gases upward and out but the mesh on your water heater cover is too far away from the shroud. I hope you follow that. Other than that though...great work on this! Ive done 3 of these type of RV renos and they are pretty fun once your have the end result!
Always love to see you and your Dad working together my dad was disabled so that was difficult to work on things ,you are so lucky 🍀 to have him my dad passed on 1993 you are 😊😊
Usually have holes under propane tanks as lp gas is heavier than air so if leaks it will go out bottom. detector a great idea as well. same w heater n water heater. great project. almost bought s project one myself do good to see all your ideas. buying used newer one for parts was genius.
I’m glad you sealed the propane tank box. I was in the middle of commenting asking if you if you were going to make a box and make it leak proof when the video got to that point 😅.Coming along great.
Vice Grip Garage, Junkyard Digs and Dylan McCool ALL had to wait once I saw that Budget Buildz had a new episode with the GMC Motorhome! This is so much fun to watch you guys bring this iconic piece of American motorhome history back to life. I love how your incorporating all the new technology from the wrecked camper , great job. I already cant wait for the next installment!
I am the line voltage electrician on a project similar to this one, and I just got home from first power up of our inverter, and line voltage side testing. Our project is an Airstream trailer, full body off, interior redo / upgrade. At about 16 months so far, it has not been fast, but the lead designer / builder had some issues. I can say until near the end, it never looks very good, then the panels start going on, and everything ties together. Great project guys, looking forward to the next video. One more thing, YES, sealing the tanks from the rest of the vehicle was necessary !!! Not even a debate. Glad you did it !
It’s lovely watching you and dad working together sharing your ideas together on all of your projects and now you and all your family get enjoy all the fruits of your hard work together. Great job great family 👍👍👍
Looking great! Might want to consider adding Yellow Thread Sealing PTFE Plumber's Tape (Yellow color designates for use on pipe carrying gas) to all your propane gas connections.
Wow! The camper is really coming together. For somebody who always claims that, “we are not professionals by any means”, it seems like the two of you have been working in an RV factory for the past 20 years! 😂 You’re doing a really trick, super professional job guys. Yet another vehicle you both can really be proud of. Can’t wait for the next installment.
I have to say, I think you found the PERFECT balance of old and new in this build ❤ I very much envy this motorhome now 😂 Maybe I’d put a Holley Terminator or whatever is a bolt on EFI for it just for reliability and economy, but you are much more knowledgable with the old carbie stuff, so it makes sense. Can’t wait to see some roadtrips with the motorhome & 911 🥰
Looking good! One thing I did in the various lockers and underseat spaces is use 12v LED strip fed off the engine battery as emergency lighting, as its always 2am when you need to get in there!! :D
Once you finish this piece of art its value will be similar to 1/2 million dollar motor homes. The addition of the new parts from the salvaged trailer with the old is a wonderful marriage of old and new. This is one of the most awesome builds I've ever viewed. The finished product should be amazing. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Can't wait to see your next episode. This series of the RV rescue is the only one of the "car videos" on RUclips that I love watching with my husband. We have love camping and this is fun to see the progress you are making. Keep 'em coming, please!!
These motor homes are wicked awesome. I saw one fueling up at my local Servo (Gas Station) last year. Spoke to the owner about it and was amazed to find out how old it was. My first thought was that it was much newer maybe 1990's. Have since found that there are no more than a handful in Australia. Yours is going to be an awesome resto mod. Love the use of the modern caravan for the upgrades, brilliant for DIY on a budget. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Being a Mopar guy, I’ve certainly loved the T&C, 54 Savoy (do u still have it?) & Duster but this GMC motorhome project is so satisfying and coming along so nicely. You and your brother - I mean dad😂- are doing some great work. It’s so enjoyable to see this father & son project come together. When its done and on the road, all this hard work turns into making amazing family memories. Thanks for letting us join in the fun. 👍
Hasn’t buying that damaged caravan worked out to be a smart investment. I’m loving the build and it will be a lot safer than they were originally. Well done guys.
Great teamwork old and young firguring out the puzzle cant get better…and your dad looks younger with the beard amazing work guys keep it going cant wait to see it done
I spent my youth camping with the family in an old Sears pop up camper. We took a trip every year in the 63 olds 98 pulling that little camper. It slept 4 and me and my little brother slept in the floor. All cooking and eating was done outside under a canopy. Those were the days.
Who would have thought that you'd go full time with your projects...been here since the 911 and I'm still impressed with your ingenious work. Hi five to your dad as well! Greetings from Poland!
I love it when people rescue these motorhomes and bring them back to functional condition. Everyone does it a little differently... and YOU are going a little above and beyond to modernize things without breaking the bank. Thanks for sharing this with us. The master of this sort of thing is the guy who runs the channel Dual Ex ... if you want some inspiration, you may want to check him out. Trent & Allie, of course, have Mountain Made Vans - and I always thought THAT was cool. I can't wait until your next upload!
Spent most of the video thinking about the distance from the propane tanks and someone's head as they sleep. Glad you mentioned you already have a CO detector and did seal up the propane tank compartment.
The camper is really coming on nicely, I love the way you have integrated all the modern stuff into an old vehicle and made it work so well. Great job 👍🏻
Hi guys your doing such a great job using the caravan parts its such a great idea working together father and son irreplaceable memories I did the same with my dear dad years ago on a school bus camper conversion cheers from OZ
This RV is looking BEAUTIFUL! Safety items, Your Slides for Propane & Battery, need a pin/bolt to stop the slides going out as you take corners. You need to protect the exterior outlet from rocks from the tire that is inches away. And I would run sealant around the Propane take 2 x 2 base, Propane is heaver than Air, it will not rise goes to the lowest point and awaits a spark/ would have been safer to place open metal mesh in this floor area( both slide and plywood floor of the RV. If you look at a RV there is open free air under the tanks. Those rental tanks are the weakest point in a propane system. And you really have no idea what the tank owner before you did to the tank valve Simply a wonderful project you are doing!
Good evening from Cape Cod 🦈 you're really doing some fine work on that camper. I remember when your first picked it up and what the interior looks like, you and your dad should be proud of yourselves. Keep up the great work and the awesome content guys 👍✌️🇺🇲
Love what you are doing so far, looking real good, however although I like the slid-outs for the gas bottles & batteries, think it would be prudent to make both slids lock in the closed position to stop them moving whilst the camper is in motion, them being able to hit the outer door,... xxxx
As a full time RVer, I found it helpful tp put 12V LED strips in all the storage / service compartments. In the long run, they are entirely more helpful when having to do repairs and services that are going to require you or a repairman to have to crawl into those tight spaces.
I just have to say when you began the tear out I was thinking what a piece of. Well you, anyways wow, I mean you guys are really craftsman and this project is turning into something amazing. I’ve really been enjoying this build more and more as it progresses. Can’t wait for the next video. Love it guys!
This is a nice change from the usual "will it run?" videos. I can definitely appreciate the thought that is going into the build, and also the craftsmanship used. Looking forward to the next installment of "This Old Motorhome"!
Really glad you’re enjoying! We’ve already booked one trip with it in May…sooo it’s most definitely got to be ready by then! 😅 Hopefully long before so we can test it some!
Nice work, don't forget to add a lock on the battery/propane tank trays. You don't want them sliding around while driving, or jamming against the door.
What a pleasure to witness the genesis of your videos over the years. The editing quality and continuity keep improving with every video. Very compelling content.
YOU are both doing a great job , and I love the recycling of the new but totalled camper to update this classic , the only thing I would do is add a few more batteries , or get a battery generator that can be used with the solar panel you have .
Fabulous video - very pleased you did the sealing of the propane at end, had me worried there for a while! Im in NZ - we have really strict rules on gas for good reason.
Coming along Nicely !!.. Strongly suggest you install several HD Latches or Locks on those 2 sliding shelves !,, That's a Lot of weight for that thin, fiberglass door to hold !!
You guys have perfect timing...I was trying to figure out what to watch while having dinner. Open up the RUclips app, and what's at the top of the list? Budget Builds! Bon Appetit, and another great episode, gentlemen!👍
This is one of my favorite series to follow. It is so cool to see all the challenges you overcome in making the new fit and work in the vintage RV. Keep up the great work. I look forward to seeing the finished RV. I hope you and your family have many great memories in it.
Remarkable job, love watching your channel and this rehab camper project. I am looking forward to going along to the first campground weekend. You both are very talented together. God bless
Did a Land Rover Defender 110 from the scrapyard for me and my wife. Took me three years and still have some little things. I love such stuff and what you and your Dad are doing is awesome. Enjoy your time and have fun with the results and I bet.....you two will always start to smile when you see this car
I really enjoy watching these videos I’ve seen other videos that highlights these motor homes and they we’re quite unique for there time especially some of the over the top interiors they had.😁😁👍👍
Wow you guys look like brothers .... that's your dad wtf !!!!!! You guys are doing an amazing job on the rebuild . Love it 💯 Best part it's a RV and not a trailer ... we have a travel trailer and it sucks towing only plus side is when you run out of supplies, you can disconnect and use the truck to go to the store . Looks amazing !!!!
21:50 Probably a good idea to fit a fine mesh metal gauze behind that vent to stop bugs from entering and breeding inside the camper. Hook up a large computer fan(or similar) in that same spot to keep that confined space well ventilated.
It's nice to see an older RV like this get a little resto-mod action to make it usable and enjoyable for at least the next generation of RVers. Great job, love the build!
This build is probably even better than factory. The way you have designed the modern vs old school looks of this RV is one of the best builds I think I have ever seen on YT. You and your dad are rebuilding an amazing motorhome.
This Build brought me to the Channel and i´m excited for every new Video ever since! Its nice to discover some fresh channels from time to time. keep up the amazing work fellas!
great build! Just two things: be very careful with the propane bottles. Usually they live in separate and ventilated compartments for safety reasons. Yours sits under the bed just with outside vents, but the ventilation should sit underneath the bottles! 😳 Place at least a gas warning device! The other thing is the bed. There's absolute no ventilation under the mattress. There will be mold within month especially in warmer climates... keep up the good work but stay save!
One thing you should really do is put some safety locks or stoppers on those sliders, 'cause inertia when turning right or even a jump could make them slide out and the only thing stopping them is that flimsy metal hatch/door from the original camper. Although I'd say the best and safest way to keep all that in check and also away from the weather (especially sun) is putting locks/stoppers and an inner panel, preferably weather-proofed, 'cause you don't want water over your batteries or too much heat on those propane tanks. Great episode again. Cheers from Argentina!
Michael and Family, This is one of my favorite episodes, your passion for all the little details is just over the top, not only your keeping the spirit of the GMC but making it special in your own way, Making those panels look like new again made ME smile, look forward to your next episode btw your pops and wife are mighty special too THANK YOU for sharing this
You guys are doing an awesome job on this project. I have loved these GMC motorhomes for many years, although they are way to large for me to use personally. I have been driving and customizing regular size vans for 40+ years. Most of the things you have had to do to this machine are exactly like what I had to do to many vans over the years. I also like how you were able to reuse so much of the parts from the other camper you bought. Can't wait for more of your videos, keep up the great work.
Good that you have the propane area vented to the outdoors, I suggest you also vent the battery area outside as well. You don't need off gas from the battery building up and causing a possible explosion.
You and your father are working incredibly well together with the goal of completing a restoration of this motorhome! I am in awe of your skills and incredible attention to detail! Well done, Sirs!
love this build. happy saturday everyone fantastic work. The whole back end and speaker assembly. Absolutely my style of resto-modding a RV and still keeping the soul. can't wait for the next steps.
Just one comment. It’s bad practice to pull work through a table saw. Especially when ripping 2x4s. If the saw kicks back (which is a real possibility when ripping), it will lift the workpiece and the saw blade will propel it backwards and any hand that trying to control it can, easily, be drawn into the blade in a fraction of a second.
Working with your dad is priceless.
Extremely thankful for the opportunity given…being able to work with him ☺️
Totally agree
Looks more like his brother than his dad lol
Personally, I think you and your Dad are doing amazing work on this RV! I'm enjoying following the progress on this project! Cannot wait to see the final finished product!!!!

If you didn't install one, I highly recommend a LP detector with an auto LP shutoff solenoid, they are normally standard equipment in RVs and Boats. If theres a gas leak or something gets left on it will auto shut off the propane.
My thoughts exactly, plus seal off the battery area from the living area as you did the LP.
My wife was horribly burned and almost died when ours exploded while we were cooking in it from gasses that collected in the cabinets above the tanks. doing a great job on restoring that motorhome keep up the great work u and your dad
Awesome!! That heater panel needs some bondo and paint but everything is looking great!!
You guys have perfect timing...I was trying to figure out what to watch while having dinner. Open up the RUclips app, and what's at the top of the list? Budget Builds!
Bon Appetit, and another great episode, gentlemen!👍
Love the beard's the breaded budget buildz 😁
Haha thanks 😁😁😁
It’s going better than I expected. It’s very nice and you guys are really good at this. Love it.
Love it 💯
Best part it's a RV and not a trailer ... we have a travel trailer and it sucks towing only plus side is when you run out of supplies, you can disconnect and use the truck to go to the store .
Looks amazing !!!!
You guys are doing a beautiful job.
That motorhome is turning out great. Love these videos. That GM motorhone was ahead of its time for sure. Thank you for taking us along.
Place at least a gas warning device!
The other thing is the bed. There's absolute no ventilation under the mattress. There will be mold within month especially in warmer climates...
keep up the good work but stay save!
Wow! Great work! It’s really coming together.
I'm impressed you guys really do nice work your camper is really shaping up I'd go camping with you, jeff😊
Totally agree. You don't want those trays sliding on their own. The doors won't provide enough force to stop them.
I would suggest that you should have a couple of Lithium Deep Cycle batteries for extra storage when you’re not connected to mains electricity.
Michael and Family, This is one of my favorite episodes, your passion for all the little details is just over the top, not only your keeping the spirit of the GMC but making it special in your own way, Making those panels look like new again made ME smile, look forward to your next episode btw your pops and wife are mighty special too THANK YOU for sharing this
Kool restoration, all up to date. I appreciate this content as a Rv motorhome owner. Thank you.
Love the build. Making great progress. The quick connect external propane line could get taken out with a rear tire failure.
This is an inspirational build for me. I hope I can get going on my 1975 GMC Motorhome in the near future.
I was so looking forward to this update, Thank you so much B-B!!
Lovinf each bit of it... As I was doing it myself. Congratulations.
I love watching this taking shape, you're doing a lovely job. 🙂
love this build. happy saturday everyone
fantastic work. The whole back end and speaker assembly. Absolutely my style of resto-modding a RV and still keeping the soul. can't wait for the next steps.
Glad you’re enjoying! 😊 You as well!! We can’t wait to share more! We definitely want to keep the original feel, while adding nice modern amenities!
I think you guys are doing an amazing job😊
