Most people don' realize that salt is a mineral not a seasoning. and doesn't add flavor while cooking like an herb will. it's a leavening agent and flavor enhancer. which is why it's added to things like carmels, chocolate, fruits, meals After they've been made. which is why salt belongs on the table not in the food while it's being cooked. especially since everyone has a different flavor taste and need for salt. not only that the guidlines for salt intake per day is about 1 tsp, which we get naturally from unprocessed foods.

I have been wanting to make a campfire beef stew in my new campfire dutch oven, but because I always braise my beef stews in red wine at home, I was afraid the acidity of the wine would strip the seasoning on the cast iron. My mind didn't even go to using beer! I feel like an idiot now haha. ...Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for watching! Yes I use flour to thicken the stock. More flour makes it more thick. It needs to be combined with a fat or oil to bind and not get lumpy. Take care👍

I'm a child of the 60s my friend.👍 As you guessed total time was several hours but the final stewing or braising was about 2 hrs. Much beyond that sometimes the vegetables get a bit mushy. Take care and enjoy life!🌲🔥👍

Getting my first dutch oven tomorrow. Is it okay to use it over open flames like that? I mostly see it used over (and under) coals. I'm guessing that will be ideal, but you know... fire awesome.
That’s a 6litre Dutch oven great for 4 people. You could go smaller or bigger depending on the amount of people you are cooking for. It’s a bit big for two actually.

I believe I added fresh Rosemary to the dish but Thyme would work as well. Probably less than 1 cup of flour, about 1/2 a cup. If you add more it would be thicker of course. Hope that helps👍

You can totally use a fire. It takes a bit of practice to regulate the heat. Enjoy the Dutch Oven and cook something awesome!👍

What is that sprig at the end? Also, the flour - roughly a cup? Looks great!
I believe I added fresh Rosemary to the dish but Thyme would work as well. Probably less than 1 cup of flour, about 1/2 a cup. If you add more it would be thicker of course. Hope that helps👍

@@Woodswalker1965 i have a 4.5qt pot so I went a bit overboard with ingredients so I couldn't close the lid and thus a lot of broth spilled out however it still turned out amazing
