This is about this song. It' big. The Canadian singer penned this song from her debut album after the death of a young friend left her devastated. Sarah explained in a 2005 interview for her iTunes Originals release: "'Ben's Song' was definitely a highlight for me. It was sort of one of the first songs I wrote where I really felt good about being a songwriter. As it was one of my first attempts, it was one of, I think, 10 or 11 songs that I wrote for that record, it was definitely the first time I felt like, 'Okay, I've done something good here. This feels really great.' And it was also a song that came out very quickly, and songwriting has never been easy for me. It's a slow, laborious process, and once in a blue moon a song comes out quickly and sort of the universe opens itself up to me and offers me this gift. And 'Ben's Song' was that time. I think it's just because I was so emotionally raw at that time. Ben was a child that I knew. He was 11 years old when he passed away. He had an inoperable brain tumor. I had spent a number of months with him everyday in childcare, taking care of him and hanging out with him and playing games with him and just being his friend. So we became very close. And he was the first person who was ever close to me that I had lost. I mean I had grandparents die but I had met them once in my life so there was never real emotional connection. So it was definitely really a strong emotional response to that whole thing and that's where it all came from." >>
I first heard you when you sang this song when you were about 19 years of age on CBC radio. It was mesmerizing then and it has only become more meaningful with time. It was on my son's playlist when he left this earth unexpectedly at 22 years of age. It was running through my mind when we lowered him into the earth on a cold December day. It is part of the soundtrack of my life. May God bless you...
So sad and so beautiful love this song love Sarah McLaughlin she has such a angelic voice and a very beautiful woman. I could listen to her for hours on end and never get tired of that beautiful voice a fan always love you Sarah.!!!!💓
On the hills of fire the darkest hour I was dreaming of my true love's power Who will bring a light to stoke the fire Fear not for you're still breathing On a winter's day I saw the life blood drained away A cold wind blows on a windless day Hear the cry for new life the morning's flame You were the brightest light that burned too soon in vain Who will bring you back from where there's no return Fear not for you're just dreaming On a winter's day I saw the life blood drained away A cold wind blows on a windless day
Wolf Trap 1989. Sarah and band were the first of two openers for a Bruce Cockburn concert I attended. I remember clearly the atmosphere of Ben's Song that night, and her music's been warmly haunting me since. Though I play her music by other means now, I every so often pull out the cassette of Touch I bought that night and recall the many times it companioned me on art projects, road trips, and just hanging about.
Ben was a boy who Sarah took care of sometimes when she was in art school. He died at the age of 10 or 11. I think it was a brain tumor but I could be wrong about that.
Eu amo essa música. Impressionante como ela transmite paz e calmaria. O mundo precisa de mais cantores como a Sarah. Que voz linda e encantadora! Beijos diretamente do Brasil!
Olha me desculpa no que vou te falar. Como a Sarah Mclachlan o mundo JAMAIS verá outra cantora. Ela é ÚNICA. Essa mulher é além de especial. Sua alma é linda e a voz que ela tem além de ser muito bela nunca haverá outra igual.
After I heard this I found another video of her singing this live. The video was done in 1994. Before sing the song she explained that it was almost certainly the saddest one she had ever written. Yes, it was about a little boy named Ben who was about 10 years old and he had an inoperable brain tumor and died. She said that it had happened 8 years earlier, that would have been 1986. Sarah was born in 1968 so she was probably not much older than 18 or 20 when she made this video. Just a guess.

On the hills of fire the darkest hour
I was dreaming of my true love's power
Who will bring a light to stoke the fire
Fear not for you're still breathing
On a winter's day

Hear the cry for new life the morning's flame
You were the brightest light that burned too soon in vain
