This version of possession is simply the best she ever sang it. I love her. It sends chills down my spine to hear her sing the song in this version. She is the most talented writer and singer ever. She has not been given the recognition she deserves.
@@crusheverything4449 actually yes, more talented. They're all great singers, musicians, and songwriters - no doubt there. She's multi-instrumental, a more encompassing animal and human rights activist, a literal music teacher, AND she's a single mother. She is absolutely more talented, with a heavier workload no less.
I remember watching this, actually I recorded the episode on video. I had never heard of her, or the song, but it left me stunned. What an incredible performance of such a beautiful yet slightly distressing song. I have heard do this live a few times, but this performance is utterly wonderful.
This is my favorite version of this song. So haunting and personal. The opening intro where the host clearly has no idea of the talent he has on his stage makes it even better.
Wow! I always thought this was a love song about being in a long distance relationship and finally meeting for the first time. Never realized it was another’Every Breath You Take’. Damn what kick in the teath
So true on the emotion, especially after hearing what the song is about! Had Canadian therapists OTthanks Queens University in Toronto) come to work in the states back in 1990’s and they shared great Canadian artists before they became popular in the US. Used “If I had a million dollars” as background theme for graduate school presentation regarding what we as students would do with a million dollars and professor and whole class thought I made the soundtrack😂 I shared with the class it was the Barenaked Ladies from Canada and they all looked puzzled. They heard tune 5 years later😂
She overflowed with passion back then and you can see & hear it. Then commercialism takes hold... This was an album i couldn't listen to for many years. I feared it would take me to those "memories trapped in time",.. memories of a tragic love. A love better than chocolate! When i did finally listen to it i was taken hostage by the memories of HER. The place my heart remains. A place I'm left suffocating, remembering, face to face, recalling all my senses she left in flames. Love and diving have something in common. The deeper you go the more intense the pressure; and she took me to crushing depths where I'm left to suffer. If only i knew then what i know now... There is one good thing though. I no longer deny it. Its funny how others always knew, no matter how much i thought or said otherwise. I couldn't even mention her name because I'd hear, "its written all over your face!" So many arguments.... Without being in the mix that girl got me into trouble. There's only one that got all of me and it looks like there I'll stay...constant in the waiting.
"I sort of wrote it from the point of view of someone who is so obsessed with somebody else that they might ... do something violent." "Cool." OK, Jools.
Reminds me oddly of Tori Amos being in between songs. Tori Amos: "Thank You.... Thanks.... And, here's another song about my rape." Audience: [claps and cheers loudly] "YES!! You GO TORI!! ...WE LOVE YOU, TORI!!" ...........
She's so beautiful and this is the most gorgeous performance of this song she's ever done. I loved hearing the little bits of nerves then those full notes. I Suppose it must have been difficult to sing this song as it was about her stalker who killed himself I believe so when she says you love someone so much you might do something violent it's real emotions in her voice "take your breath away"
a beautiful song, but the words mean nothing at all until sang by this woman with powerful and articulate vocals make me shutter and bring tears to my eyes. intense romantic sexual precision dreamy her best work i believe. thank you Sarah, I believe.

Curiously if my memory serves me well this piano version was a hidden track on Fumbling towards extacy , maybe she thought it wasn't for everyone , it certainly works better than the full band version .
I was so shocked when I first discovered this as a hidden track.. I normally didn't allow the CD to play through bc I had my favorite songs I'd skip to, but I was so glad when I did.. this started playing after silence and I had to catch my breath.. 20+ years later and I'm still trying to catch it..
More likely the record company. Often the singer solo versions are stunning but a more narrow audience.....so they go with the more " noise" versions to sell more records
I was made fun of a LOT when I put her on during high school. Thankfully I didn’t give a crap what other people thought I just kept on playing this amazing album (Surfacing and Afterglow are also amazing efforts).

Now I see where this song started from. She went on to do a lot of great stuff, even though I tend to agree with Northsea's sentiments. That's the Faustian trap for artists isn't it? "I'll give you your dreams. But the pay-back is the homogenization of all that you do." So it goes.

So she was a stalkee? Hmm. I've come back to this song from missing a lost love during my seasonal depression onset...a love lost that could not have happened. Twice. Decades apart. It helps me sleep....
One of my greatest musical disappointments is watching Sarah morph from producing masterpieces like this to making mediocre, middle aged and slightly smug MOR and uninspired Christmas cash in albums. But this....THIS is one of the best records ever made, and this performance is phenomenal.
Northseacrashes it’s a good thing you don’t walk in her shoes then, right? Otherwise you’d have to pay her bills aswell as putting up with people telling you how you should behave in your own skin.
Northseacrashes I agree she became more pop and adult contemporary after this but she became very successful and in the end that’s what we want for ourselves. But I do see your point, it feels like she kinda sold out.
I think that the evolution is exaggerated even more than it might otherwise be for artists who had their heyday in the 90s, because the styles and trends have changed so much since then, that music like this--ethereal, organic, with real edges--feels even more lost in a lot of ways. Some of Sarah's more recent stuff strikes me as 'fair enough' for an artist of her age, music about life and so forth, although I certainly wish that "Angel" hadn't informed so much of her style since its release. But the Christmas albums, yeah, I get why but that sort of thing seems very far gone from the energy of FTE.
ja8ames I'm not a fan of Christmas albums from any artist. Sarah's latest stuff is a mixed bag, I thought Shine On had Beautiful Girl as the only standout song but Laws of Illusion was full of great stuff.
This is the definitive, haunting version. No drums or synths needed.
Pure feeling.
i fond the drumming excessive in Vox.
We will always have this, the special time, when Sara was bursting onto the scene, with her extraordinary songs, and talent.
This take you to a sad, dark place you don't want to go, but once there, it is hard to leave.
This version of possession is simply the best she ever sang it. I love her. It sends chills down my spine to hear her sing the song in this version. She is the most talented writer and singer ever. She has not been given the recognition she deserves.
Really? More talented than Elton John or Paul McCartney? She’s great, but let’s be real.
@@crusheverything4449 Elton John’s music wouldn’t be half as good without Bernie Taupin’s lyrics.
Sarah is absolutely up there. She has a great gift that most don't have.

One of the best stalker songs ever made.
Right
Don't forget The Police song, "Every Breath You Take." Also not a love song.
2-21-22 almost 2:00 AM - I think my stalker sent me this video 🤔
This was intense. By far the best live version I have heard of this song.
This is my favorite version of this song. So haunting and personal. The opening intro where the host clearly has no idea of the talent he has on his stage makes it even better.
This makes any of the full band versions sound like covers. Possession deserves to be an intimate yet creepy piano ballad, not a loud thumping track.
Yout the best sarah hope the best for you much luck on your endouvers

So true!!
I agree! It’s just mesmerizing like this! The 2019 version is probably the best on my opinion.
To each their own. I much prefer the studio version because of the vocal harmonies.

E depois, eu enxugaria suas lágrimas
Apenas feche seus olhos querido
Por esse mundo eu tenho tropeçado
Tantas vezes traída
Tentando achar uma palavra honesto para encontrar
A verdade livre
Oh você fala comigo em enigmas
E você fala comigo em rimas
Meu corpo doe por respirar seu ar
Suas palavras me mantêm viva
E eu seria aquela
A segurá-lo forte
Beijá-lo com força
Te deixarei sem ar
E depois, eu enxugaria suas lágrimas
Apenas feche seus olhos querido
Por essa noite eu vago
É da manhã que eu tenho medo
Outro dia sabendo do
Caminho que tenho medo de pisar
Oh dentro do mar de sonhos lúcidos
Eu sigo sem orgulho
Nada nos prende aqui
E eu não serei negada
E eu seria aquela
A segurá-lo forte
Beijá-lo com força
Te deixarei sem ar
E depois, eu enxugaria suas lágrimas
Apenas feche seus olhos querido...

Voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time
The night is my companion, and solitude my guide
Would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after, I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
Through this world I've stumbled
So many times betrayed
Trying to find an honest word to find
The truth enslaved
Oh you speak to me in riddles
And you speak to me in rhymes
My body aches to breathe your breath
Your words keep me alive
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after, I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes dear
Into this night I wander
It's morning that I dread
Another day of knowing of
The path I fear to tread
Oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
Nothing stands between us here
And I won't be denied
And I would be the one
To hold you down
Kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
And after, I'd wipe away the tears
Just close your eyes...
