- I produced this LIVE TO AIR late night talk/variety hosted by Ralph Benmergui. On this show the wonderful Sarah McLachlan performed a song that was not yet released with just her vocal and piano. Ralph did a wonderful interview as usual, with his engaging personality bringing out the same in Sarah. I love the CBC and will never forget this amazing show.

...and that album turned out to be a masterpiece. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy deserves a place in the list of top 25 greatest albums of all time.
Yes it does
I would definitely agree to that
Yup.
Not at all
Ladies and Gentlemen, What we have here is history unfolding in front of our eyes.
I miss the 90s so much
So do I 😢
This hidden track on fumbling still hypnotizes me. Was how I became obsessed over twenty years ago now... I still don't know how music can be so affecting.
A frightening song lyric wise...terrifying story behind those words. Only Sarah could pull out perfection with words of obsession, aggression, fear and insanity-that's why she IS the lady we all love.
This album "Fumbling Toward Ecstasy" sucks you in and Never lets go! 5 ⭐.... One of my favorites albums of All Time and I eat and sleep Music...
in my Top 5 also, i LOVE this album!
wow... what a treasure to hear this song during its initial phase.
This is my favorite song of hers. I was lucky enough to see her at Lilith Fairs.
It was so much fun to hear this first public outing of a song that has become so familiar. Clearly, she is among those rare artists whose solo, live performances can stand on their own, even exceed the impact of the carefully crafted and massaged studio versions. My second observation is that Sarah McLachlan, the person, was even then, and remains, simply delightful.
A year or passed since writing the comment above. I had forgotten describing Sarah as a delight. And you know what, as I listened to her talk, the word came back again. What a delight.
Very different intro vocal melody, everything else is the same.
Even at this early age she was still considered a professional. I was simply pointing it out. I am a Sarah fan.
You can be satisfied with great music. .but let it take your breath away ...thanks to her I breathe without denial....
This is such a gem! THANK YOU for sharing this!
She inspires me as a singer, songwriter, and a pianist.
Goose bumps anybody?
Simply beautiful. Her versions with and without her falsettos are pleasing
Amazing talent. Love her music
This is so amazing. And I love that the interviewer asked about the "jump" her voice does sometimes. I have always wondered about that.
It's called transitioning from her chest voice to her head voice otherwise known as falsetto.
This is amazing. Jumped on the CD when it came out because they nailed this piece. Haunting.
Magical and wonderful
Amazing lyrics and musicianship
Wow. what a privilege to see this.
Beautiful!!
I love the camera cutting to her mom after Ralph's "Look, Mom! A real job!" bit.
Hate to break it to you, but those were 2 Canadian politicians in the audience and not her mother, Audrey McLaughlin and Sheila Copps; I guess they were there for interviews that day!
Your in the arms...❤
simple yet powerful
Summoning some Tori Amos here also. Awesome!!!!
I do wish that Sarah and Tori would do a tour together.
This has to be the best version of Possession.
kawhi leonard
i watched this!! it was on at some ridiculous late night hour and i was mad that nobody was gonna see it.
this was done while she was in the middle of recording the CD. When it was released i wondered what happened to this song i remembered hearing.
there is a similar version on the disc, i think she couldn't decide which one she prefers.
La amooo desde Venezuela
And she has become more masterful at her art over the years.
Awesome, good music and nice interview!
The feels!
The "bum" note actually fit, so I think it was fine.
The hidden track is the best Easter egg on any album.
@RubberWilbur Was that really a mistake, though? I've heard her play it that way another time, as well. I really like it. It's not what I'm expecting and the effect is very raw and dark and makes me question if it really belongs...and somehow it seems to belong. I can see why others wouldn't like it, though.
Beautifully done. Yes, there was a bum note at 2:53 and I'm glad that was pointed out. It just goes to show that life ain't perfect but despite that the beauty comes out. It didn't take anything away from the performance.
There’s not a bum note within a thousand miles of this performance. People are so ignorant.
It wasn't a bum note, it was what is called a "confused transition", meant to pull you from one state of mind to another. Notice the tempo change as well as the "spacey affect" closer right after.
Ralph did a wonderful interview as usual, with his engaging personality....LMAO!
I am a US Navy veteran, who "fumbled towards ecstasy" wearing a gas mask on the way to a sand bag bunker in Jan 1991, it has changed how i hear this album after learning of the connection to the poem Dulce Decorum 'Est
When the hell did John Mayer get a late night show?!??
@qualityshows This is not the first time she has performed Possession in public
Nobody made that claim. Grow a brain cell.
Sorry but had Solace already been released by this time?
Yes, Solace was the album before Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.
Soon after this performance she was sued by her stalker for $250,000 for HER ALLEDGEDLY USING his words from letters he sent to her numbering in the thousands FOR THIS SONG ' POSSESSION ' ( She DEEMED THEM LOVE LETTERS ) ... ( More likely it was a chance to be near her in court ) ... He committed suicide in some nearby woods before the case was brought to trial ...
star wars episode 9 trailer
@karabinas
Talented, she writes her own songs lyrics and music. Name a pop or R & B or rap for that matter star that actually can play instruments and write complete songs.... NONE.
Sade writes her songs.
I aint the stalker...
Song is about some guy who was obsessed with her writing letters to her and she used some of the things he wrote and used them as lyrics..a disturbed man..took her to court over this song and before it went to court he committed suicide... Its creepy,sad,brilliant.beautiful...however a serious mental illness...I'd be scared to death if someone was stalking me
She just explain it to you...can't u read?
Bum note at 2:53
The host resembles Charlie Sheen.
wow, genuine musician. no computers. vocals-piano-lyrics. shit, reduced to basic adjectives.
I HAVE!!!!! TO SHUT UP BECAUSE I NEED GOD FOR STRENGTH TO CARRY ONWARD TILL THE END YEARS FROM NOW!!!!!!!
PLEASE FORGIVE ME, EVERYONE, THAT I HAVE OFFENDED. I AM MENTALLY ILL TRYING TO BE SOMEONE IN THIS WORLD.
I'm SORRY FOR ALL THAT I HAVE SAID IN AN UGLY WAY BUT I AM STILL DESTROYED TO SOME DEGREE SO PLEASE FORGIVE ME.
Lovely video, thanks so much for sharing. If you get a minute, please stop by my channel and take a listen my original music. I hope you enjoy.
Chill out dude...don't be so touchy!
Bum Note my ass. If thats the way it came out then thats the way its supposed to be.Clean the wax out of your ears dude..
She acknowledged the bum note. Nervous. Proves it was live
The production of this album is so cheesy 90s only live the songs make sense and i mean sarah and the piano and nothing else
