As a father now... "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin ...is probably one of the hardest song for me to listen to without welling up. One of the songs that has me sobbing like a baby is “Vincent” by Don Maclean. Not only because of the heart wrenching dedication to Van Gogh and his misunderstood beauty, but also because it was one of my dad’s favourite songs. Ugh, so hard to listen to, but it has one of the most hauntingly beautiful melody and lyrics I’ve ever heard.
+Blaine Steele I disagree, Trent Reznors standalone (not with NIN) - Hurt is far more emotional. NIN version of Hurt fucking sucks but if you listen to his unplugged piano cover you will be blown away, look for the charity event.
As a sailor, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” always gets me withe the line - “Does anyone know where the Love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?” I spent a lot of time sailing the world with the US Navy, and I can’t think of a lonelier way to die than in the dark among the waves.
@@arthurwright8827 thank you for your service. My husband was aboard the Myles Fox in the 70s. He spent a long time in Brooklyn, NY. He got out in 1980. Strange how tunes such as this evoke such memories. God bless you!
Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” will forever be my #1 make you cry song. It always reminds me of my Papa. I took him to see Walk The Line back when it was in theaters and it was the first and only time he’d ever been to a modern movie theater. His eyes lit up. I will always remember that day and “Hurt” brings back those amazing memories for me. I love you, Papa. 💕
Johnny Cash?? poor guy hit the bottle and became a slave to evangelical charlatans and believing in one of the 2800 manmade gods of history. If only he had studied evolution and sociobiology he could have lived an honest true life, without false indoctrination, sad.
damn your comment got me, my grandma passed away 6 years ago on my birthday it was depressing and for that reason i don’t celebrate my birthday anymore too much pain man
YES! That's what I just posted! Totally agree. More earthy and raw than the NiN version. It just gets me bawling, especially the part where his wife is lovingly looking at him. I dunno, it just does it every time. ;)
NONE of these songs make my cry, but The Living Years and Tears in Heaven are songs that can really make 80% of the people turn really sad. My favorite of ALL these is The Sound of Silence. Beautiful masterpiece!!!
I much prefere the original by NIN.. There's a life performance from Trent online that will pull your heart out of your chest and tear it into pieces. It is almost to hard to bear his suffering there..
John Denver made two songs that have caused me to soak many hankies with my tears. Back Home Again. It was playing in my head when I was bottomed out and came a 1/4 inch of blowing my brains out. Fortunately I didn't . On a happier note, Take Me Home Country Roads. Every time I hear it I just totally lose it. Reminds me of my old home town in rural Pennsylvania. I imagine me and my best friend walking down the unpaved road, when we have crossed over ro to the Afterlife. Barefoot, holding hands, chewing on a piece of grass, singing along, telling him, well Larry, we have arrived.
I grew up in Youngwood and Greensburg PA... I feel you brother... I feel you... I'll probably end up jumping off a bridge or blowing my brains out or both at the same time. Stay Strong!

Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton
Tears in Heaven is so emotional because Eric wrote because of personal loss of a child and only performed the song a number of times before making an announcement that he can’t even perform it anymore because it was way too emotional for him on stage. So all of that makes ‘Tears in Heaven’ very empathetical, especially when Eric Clapton gets choked up whilst singing it.
It is neraly impossible to go on with your life if your child dies, its not a phrase when parents call their child "my life" in many languages. The incredible grief Calpton and Lory had is crippleing. Lory also lost his other son
My father(adopted me after his only son died) always listened to this song. His son died right before his 21st birthday in a tragic car accident. He always said he wanted to do better as a parent and took me from a horrible situation. Treated me like his little princess. I always thought he saved me. When he died in 2020, I realized that I was the one who saved him. Rip, my precious Daddy! ❤️🎈
Robin Gibb's amazing, ethereal vibrato voice will make anyone cry, There has never been, nor will there ever be, a voice like his. In "Rings Around the Moon," Robin's voice was at its peak. Also, the Bee Gees sang a cover of Carole King's "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" that many who have seen the video have commented is better than the original. Their harmonies are unbeatable -- smooth, tear-jerking, and beautiful. Please reconsider.
If Eric Clapton had never picked up his guitar after his son died , i for one would not have blamed him. To me this is and always be his best song ever
I lost my Dad in August. We didn't have the best father/son relationship and The Living Years gets me everytime. The only difference is that I was there when he passed. I miss you Dad. 💔
So sorry for your loss. I’ve lost my Dad 2020 and still miss so bad. You mentioned not great relationship when younger, reminds me of Cats In The Cradle. But sounds like you were better son than lyrics of the song. My sincere condolences.
"Runaway Train" Now that I've seen the video, with pictures of dozens of missing children and teens, I can't hear it without tears. "Runaway train, never coming back/ Going nowhere on a one-way track"
That was my stepdads song Bill. My mom & I loved him. Others that didn't like him never understood him. We did. I still miss him. Bill helped raise me showed me to never give up. The song that stuck with me after he died was from Phil Collins: It gets easier across those tracks. I swear I could feel and hear my stepdads voice through the birds after he passed. In Loving memory of William Leeroy Yates.
Damn! I forgot about that video. Epic sadness there. I remember when it came out when I was a teen. That one hits a nerve hard at that age when you're feeling all kinds of emotions of resentment, anger, sadness etc. The video just hammers it home. Much like Everybody Hurts. The song is sad, then you watch the video and it really hits home.
Yeap! ANGEL by Sarah Mclachlan is one of the most saddest song all over the world. Fallen, Sweet Surrender and I will remember you TOO!!! Also GOODBYE from EmmylouHarris 😭😭😭😭

Agree.. but listen also to Louis Armstrong's Bond movie tune "We have all the time in the world".. Don't care about the movie, cause the song narrative and ideas are much stronger.. Every time I hear "The Livin" Years" I see my Father's vacant eyes on that table in Emergency and the Nurse telling me "Don't go in there"! I said, "That is my Father! You want to try and stop me?" He meant well but glad I went in. Oh Goddddddddd... I miss him. I also used that song in a play I wrote and produced. Love and miss him. Must go listen to it and have a good cry. That song HURTS!
Dirk Tolenaars How can I try, to explain? Cause when I do, he turns away, again. It's always been the same, same old story. From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen. Now there's a way, and I know, that I have to go away; I know, I have to go.
Jovano Dion Manuel No. I've discorved this beautiful piece thanks to my father about 10 years ago. But the way you discover it isn't important. I simply hope you also dearly enjoy this piece of music. And consider yourself lucky to have discovered this amazing song. Just like me and many others.
Conway Twitty- That’s My Job. Honey- Bobby Goldsboro Alyssa Lies- Jason Michael Carol The Little Girl - John Michael Montgomery These songs will legit make you cry! Don’t laugh at me - Mark Willis Can be a little emotional, too.
I have to agree with you on that. It's beautiful, riveting and haunting. So many. 1) Pink Floyd-High Hopes. Hit too close to home. 2) Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle. Listening to it made me determined to not be like my father. Now that mine has left home, the part about wishing for more time rings true. 3) Gordon Lightfoot-Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Real tragedy 4) Slipknot-Snuff. Nothing compares 2U sung by Sinéad O’Connor. I cry every time I hear it. Also, the Enya song heard at the beginning of the video always makes me cry. It was used in a video that came out after the World Trade Center came down. The song is haunting
“He stopped loving her today” by the great George Jones(RIP) considered by many in the industry(CM) as the greatest song of all time . Gets me every time😢💔💔
How is "cat's in the cradle' not make that list? Honestly that song is 2 and presumably 3 times the tear jerker. I remember listening to it as a kid from the kid's perspective and it made me cry. Then listening to it as a father at midlife feeling the same pressures the song references to the middle aged dad. I am not old enough yet, but I suspect it really hits a chord with older men too seeing the world go by without them and move on...
Yeah the Ugly Kid Joe version makes my dad really emotional, and it makes me cry. I'm surprised it didn't make the list, along with Country Roads and Piano Man.
Richard Boyd : E.C. doesn't even play "Tears in Heaven" live anymore. It was therapy for him and now he no longer needs it. Why are you still crying over it?
Cats in the Cradle does it to me every time without fail. I’m tearing up just typing the name of the song for God’s sake. How could this song NOT be on your list.
The Living Years by Mike + The Mechanics gets me. It makes me think of my Dad. I could count on one hand how many times he told me he loved me. Growing up, he often called me stupid. I think he told me he was proud of me two times. We had a very strained relationship.
I am sorry that you had to go through that. I know a lot of people, now that I am middle-aged, who are still trying to overcome something negative from their childhood that has affected their entire life.
@@rpierce3336 Well, that is a stupid question, I hope you are not a father or mother, because if you are able to accept that it is okay to call "stupid" to a child, most likely you will do it with your children, I hope you don't have children yet and that you never have them, you will ruin his life if you do it.

About 15 years ago, I was working at Tower Records. One day, a label rep got staffers and I into a room with a VCR and produced a promo tape. We were among the first to see the video for "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. I knew Trent Reznor's version, but Johnny owned it and it's his song. Knowing how huge Cash is in his influence and seeing him so frail near death was too much. I lost and broke down crying right there. Everyone had a similar reaction.

@@BobYourHeadMusic that line makes me tear up too, so for me it's a line about two people who are connected, yet distant. Swimming in a fish bowl, close enough to touch, but not touching. Not connecting. Then when taken with the next line "year after year", this loneliness, this emptiness, has been going on for a very long time..

Hurt by Johnny Cash is nearly impossible to listen to without rethinking your life.
100% agree.
+Blaine Steele I disagree, Trent Reznors standalone (not with NIN) - Hurt is far more emotional. NIN version of Hurt fucking sucks but if you listen to his unplugged piano cover you will be blown away, look for the charity event.

The lyrics are so fucking sad
+Blaine Steele YES. holy shit, my thoughts exactly. Like seriously I'm a bit stupidly excited over reading this comment.
I was thinking about that song, too. It is very sad especially since it is a true story.
And that made me think about the song at the end of Titanic, “My Heart Will Go On?”

It is so hard growing older because we lose our parents. No one prepares you for that!!
damn your comment got me, my grandma passed away 6 years ago on my birthday it was depressing and for that reason i don’t celebrate my birthday anymore too much pain man
YES! That's what I just posted! Totally agree. More earthy and raw than the NiN version. It just gets me bawling, especially the part where his wife is lovingly looking at him. I dunno, it just does it every time. ;)

AFI- Endlessly, she said, Bon Jovi -Always
Tears in Heaven is so emotional because Eric wrote because of personal loss of a child and only performed the song a number of times before making an announcement that he can’t even perform it anymore because it was way too emotional for him on stage.
So all of that makes ‘Tears in Heaven’ very empathetical, especially when Eric Clapton gets choked up whilst singing it.
It is neraly impossible to go on with your life if your child dies, its not a phrase when parents call their child "my life" in many languages. The incredible grief Calpton and Lory had is crippleing. Lory also lost his other son

@@stardustmelody2709 you're confused. Cat Stevens did "Father and Son". "Cats in the cradle" was a song, similar topic, by Harry Chapin. Not too lazy are you?
My wife passed on 12.30.03. In 04 100 Years was played alot as it was a new song. Now when I hear it my subconscious can't deal with it. What a beautiful song it is . She only had 44.74 years.
Everyone had a similar reaction.
edalder2000
I'm a huge cash fan and he done the song Justice... but NIN owns it and no one can come close
its not cash's song, its 9 inch nails song, cash covered it
Brynden Rivers junky pride?
Brynden Rivers I don't care what you have a 'PhD in. Letting oneself become a 'junky' is having no self control, disrespect for the body, and total disregard for the consequences.
Worked there too...
Gary come home - Spongebob
Yes.
SI!
+Lane Girl Ja!
Same though
I cried for a solid 39.48 hours when I heard that song.
You can hear the pain in the song Tears in Heaven. I couldn't imagine the pain he went through.
If you want to hear pain in someones heart. Listen to Alyssa Lies
Elvis presley gospel
Elvis presley gospels
OMG it's heartbreaking
Alyssa Lies was about a little girl he knew and very touching, But Tears in Heaven is about his own son.
One of my all-time favorites would be" He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" by The Hollies.
more than 22 million people came here to either satisfy their boredom or to cry let's all admit it
Ashley Samimi that's what I thought too. a lot of depressed people out there
boredom yeah hahaha
boredom and curiosity about the songs they chose
I came here to gain knowledge about songs that probably would make me cry, but I end up not crying at all, just a few nostalgic memories in some of these songs... :T
Ashley Samimi 1-
"Sound of Silence" is greatly emotional, but I think "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" is more so.
That was my thought exactly when I heard this list.
The boxer makes me allways cry
Bright eyes even more so
"We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl"- I cry everytime I hear this line.
Luv this song!!😭💞
Why?
@@BobYourHeadMusic that line makes me tear up too, so for me it's a line about two people who are connected, yet distant. Swimming in a fish bowl, close enough to touch, but not touching. Not connecting. Then when taken with the next line "year after year", this loneliness, this emptiness, has been going on for a very long time..
My best friend Larry love this song. Reminds us of our careers at the USPS, Comparing our office to a whole oceanarium full of lost souls swimming in their own personal fish bowls, year after depressing year.
My buddy Larry and I can relate to this line. Enough lost souls out there, swimming in their fishbowls, to fill up an Oceanarium.
"The Show Must Go On" by Queen is a powerful sad song too
At least half of Queen's songs are tear bait.
I love that song
Don't Try So Hard is sadder.
Love of my life better
"These Are The Days Of Our Lives" is the one that gets me. Freddie was dying but he wasn't sad.
“Go rest high on that mountain” by Vince Gill, makes me cry
My son died almost 10 years ago. Tears in Heaven is the one for me. :(
I'm so sorry. Losing a child is the worst thing. What music did he like?
Sorry for your loss. My father was a huge Eric Clapton fan. So am I. I feel your pain.
@@AL-wl1ut .
I can say in all veracity, humility, and sincerity before God; I wish it had been me instead of your beloved son.God bless you!
I would like your comment but it’s at 69 likes
Ill be right behind you, Josephine - Josh Woodward. Makes me cry every time
What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
It makes me feel hella nostalgic not that sad tho
I've thought the same. It also gave a poetic pause to Robin Williams' character in "Good Morning, Vietnam" when he started to see the horrors of the war.
I find it uplifting not sad.
That would be bittersweet.
When I think about the brutality, the pain, the humiliation, the indignity, and the oppression that black people have gone through in the past 100 years, and then you hear this song sung by a black man, it just breaks me up every time.
>List of sad songs
>Ranks/picks them partially based off chart success
That’s...not how these lists normally work
Ikr! So many great songs are there which don't make the charts because of unpopularity. It's simply biased in favour of flourished bands.
Tears in Heaven always makes me cry. The context of the song is so sad. I just cry all the time when I hear it. His poor son.
Mad World - Gary Jules. This cover, originally by Tears for Fears, strips the song down to a somber piano accompanied by haunting vocals. Once you've heard it you'll never forget it.
John Roll all around me are familiar faces
Just listening to that, and decided to look up other sad songs. I expected Whitey Ford sings the blues, you know Everlast Walk a mile in his shoes
This is on here right
The cover sucks!! Song for millinials who never grew up with the original. I grew up with the original and the 1st time I heard Gary Jules version is said what a shitty cover!
@@omgwtflmaololrotfl2368 lmfao nice attempt at an insult but im GenX. The 80s new wave crap the first one was set to in no way fit the subject. Your opinion here is invalid.
Another song that should've been on this video is "These Are The Days of Our Lives" by Queen. Makes me cry just thinking about it.
Freddie mercury, “These are the days of our lives, “ is a top for me
Agreed and mother love.
Its the last song he made before his passing in 1991
and Who Wants To Live Forever
That's what I was thinking too. And the song Bijou.
Or who "wants to live forever"
My nomination ( that is missing from this list 🙄 ) is Tony Baxton's "Un-Break My Heart"
“One More Light” by Linkin Park always makes me cry, listening to Chester singing about caring about people passing away especially given he was struggling so badly with his mental health
You said it!👏👏👏👏👏
He eventually dedicated to Chris Cornell😥😥
Every Linkin Park song ever
I prefer waiting for the end
That was specifically for chris
Tears in Heaven never fails to make me cry. It was played in my friend’s funeral. She was too young :((
Sorry to hear that.
Sorry for your loss :(
