    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Dillinger (Johnny Depp) tells Billie (Marion Cotillard) about himself and tells her she's with him now.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Based on author Bryan Burrough's ambitious tome Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-43, director Michael Mann's sprawling historical crime drama follows the efforts of top FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale ) in capturing notorious bank robber John Dillinger. A folk hero to the American public thanks to his penchant for robbing the banks that many people believed responsible for the Great Depression, charming bandit Dillinger (Johnny Depp) was virtually unstoppable at the height of his criminal career; no jail could hold him, and his exploits endeared him to the common people while making headlines across the country. J. Edgar Hoover's (Billy Crudup) FBI was just coming into formation, and what better way for the ambitious lawman to transform his fledgling Bureau of Investigation into a national police force than to capture the gang that always gets away? Determined to bust Dillinger and his crew, which also included sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi), Hoover christened Dillinger the country's very first Public Enemy Number One, and unleashed Purvis to take them down by whatever means necessary. But Purvis underestimated Dillinger's ingenuity as a master criminal, and after embarking on a frantic series of chases and shoot-outs, the dashing agent humbly surmised that he was in over his head. Outwitted and outgunned, Purvis knew that his only hope for busting Dillinger's gang was to baptize a crew of Western ex-lawmen as official agents, and orchestrate a series of betrayals so cunning that even America's criminal mastermind wouldn't know what hit him. Marion Cotillard, Channing Tatum, and Stephen Dorff co-star.

      It has nothing to do with the Mafia. The whole point was that Dillinger didn't want to be part of Nettie"s team. Public Enemies were doing their own thing and that pissed off the Mafia because it caused the passing of the interstate laws.

    The saddest irony in this film is that J.Edgar Hoover was the biggest villain of them all... masquerading as a symbol of justice and righteousness. I am not condoning what Dillinger and other notable gangsters of this era did, but at least they never pretended to be anything other than what they were.

    • @teller121
      @teller121 9 лет назад +8

      Livingston Hampton Got to give Edgar credit where credit is due. nearly impossible job and built the concept and agency from almost scratch (when, btw, the were going to "can" it back in 1924 when they handed him the hot potato), against a lot of opposition, and while having to craft policies and techniques to conform with then very fluid and new fed laws governing such investigations and violations.Most big PDs and S.O.s are like mini-FBIs in their forensics and filing. You know why? because Hoover and pals started an FBI "National Academy" and earned respect by achieving results so that heretofore hesitant and resentful locals would see a lot to be gained by working with the FBI. This Nat'l Academy became a big deal for local guys to be sent to for training in all sorts of scientific crime fighting methods over the decades. Still is, 80 years later. All of this came out of a very young (28) JEH's mind when he was assigned this post by AG in 1924, and developed with some trial and error, media harassment, chewing out by congress, etc.The guy amassed a lot of power over 48 years. That usually leads to problems, for sure. But he loved that organization, despite his flaws and set it up to do a lot of good work that needed to be done in country with rapidly expanding fed jurisdiction (due to then recent developments in interstate travel via air and modern car on exponentially growing state highways, coast to coast, telephone, etc.). The guy was kind of visionary.

      I read that Hoover's men actually mistakenly killed three innocent civilians while hunting down the 'public enemies' yet Dillinger has only ever been linked to one killing - and there's doubt about that.
      Those were violent times - and although a lot of the 'robber gangs' were killers I suspect many of Hoover's men were just as bad.

    I was raised on a farm in Moooresville, Indiana. My mama died when I was three, my daddy beat the hell out of me cause he didn't know no better way to raise me. I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?

    Does anybody know if those scars on the back of Johnny's neck are his or are they part of the character's make up? I read somewhere that Johnny even wore the same after shave Dillinger wore to keep in character. What devotion to his craft! What a guy! ; )

    The 20s argot is amazing. In those days you could walk into a corporate office. Let's say you had an appointment on the 18th floor with a person you were familiar with. You'd walk up to the receptionist and say "good morning sister I have an appointment with Mr Caruthers on the 18th." The receptionist would bat her eyes to acknowledge your request. Into the elevator more often than not with an attendant. Then out into the corridor on a print carpet to the correct suite marked on a frosted glass door.
