The brilliant August Dhiel. Michael Fassbender said that he’s one of the best actors that he’s ever worked with. Apparently in Inglorious Bastards he nailed every bar scene first time and Fassbender said it was a struggle to keep up with him. Brilliant actor!
I swear to GOD I thought him or the sniper guy were nominated for the Oscar instead of Waltz.
Thought he was the most fearsome Nazi of the whole bunch in IB.
Maybe, is it just a German who didn't have to pretend and was allowed to be himself ?!

He is always the rank of a Major in his roles as an officer.
He's a captain in this movie - Hauptsturmfuhrer
@@puffdanny2kthank you, my first time finding that rank in German. Specifically that exact name
He is captain in this movie friend, is germany( hauptsturmfuher)
In "Munich - The Edge of War" He also plays a SS Hauptsturmführer. In "The Ninth Day" (2004) he played a SS Untersturmführer, which was the equivalent of a Lieutenant. In the upcoming "The Dissapearance, he plays SS- Hauptsturmführer Joesph Mengele. It seems like he is typecast as a SS man.

I was half-expecting Brad Pitt to say "Bown-jhorno" at the start
Or, in this case, "Bown-jur."
This is where the German officer's suspicion starts. A professional chemist would be outraged at being asked the chemical formula for phosphate.
I think it was actually when he was shuffling. The look on the German's to me implied that someone in phosphate mining shouldn't have that level of dexterity.
Yes but it didnt lead to anything. He got killed immediately. The scene is there just to add a bit of tension to the proceedings and that's why they cast Diehl in a role similar to Inglourious Basterds. So the audience immediately understands what is at stake here.
I thought it was uninspired casting the same guy in the same role, but considering how small the part was, it actually makes sense.
The officers jacket is on point. Looks amazing.
I am the same opinion even so there are some major inaccuracies.

@@philippe8160 that not true. Hugo Boss produced uniforms but they did not designed it. Look it up. Its an urban myth

So, what do we do about this pickle ? Stiglitz ?
Why didn't he write "King Kong" on one of the cards?
I like it shows how much he goes into his spy work by showing his shuffling skills.
Literally stumbled upon this film on Prime and fell in love with it
It feels that we are still in that tavern somehow.
This is a great scene, and it's always the 'so called B Grade Actors' that act the best. August was fantastic as Billy Zane was in Tombstone and Titanic.
Man Billy Zane did that role too well. I still get mad looking at him.
This scene was great, great tension, but it didn't lead to any pay-off. I mean the officer just greeted them at the party, walked off and then got immediately killed. So no pay-off on the whole "will he blow their cover or not" deal.
So really when you think about it, that's why they cast Diehl. They knew this officer was going to be in the film only for two scenes, but they wanted this first scene to create as much tension as possible. So they cast Diehl in pretty much the same role like he had in Inglourious Basterds to get instant tension - the audience would think "is he going to figure them out like he did in Inglourious Basterds?". Which is an effect you wouldnt get with any other actor in the part.
At first I thought it wasnt very creative casting, casting the most obvious guy to play the suspicious officer, but then after seeing how brief the part was, it is actually pretty smart because it maximizes the potential of the small part.
My chemistry teacher when she is angry that nobody paid attention to her "3:07"

August is such a brilliant actor. When he portrays Nazis (which he's done frequently), he is charming and charismatic, but the evil and brutality within is just visible below the surface and it's the combination which makes him so compelling to watch.
