Black is absolutely doing some magic with this update
Iol
I see what you did there.
Feels good on my pocket.
Updated my P4k and 6k and went to two jobs back to back. Very happy so far.
do you use any adapters/speedboosters? I've heard some folks having trouble with the update and their metabones and viltrox don't work.
@@taylor91192 Viltrox released an intermediate firmware update to solve this.
You also get to now shoot 4k BRAW on the OG 6K
Yes even though a pretty big crop, I was stoked they did it..
Love this feature too
@@ekphotography Am quit happy shooting 6k on my 6k Pro and never see myself shooting 4k raw but i guess its still a good update for those that need it on the OG 6k
I was stoked until I saw how much it cropped in.
The crop is pretty bad
I'm so jazzed about the new stuff BMD is doing with their cameras
Try the Arri Log C to Rec709 LUT that comes with resolve.
No colourspace transform, straight Gen 5.
Give it a 1.2 contrast during the day, no extra at night, 55 Saturation.
To me, it looks perfect.
*Edit*
There is something to be said for making your own look, but when colouring scenes you filmed long ago and don't even remember what the colours looked like -like in some insane pink-orange sunset-, having some baseline you can trust to be more or less what it looked like is extremely useful.
In terms of color science, you already had that gen 5 when shooting raw, great video!
Great video again, as always! The new Gen 5 color science is much improved and probably does well with an Alexa LUT on it too. Even though it's close to the Alexa, the Alexa still has some magic sauce that just renders soft filmic images a little better. Cheers!
If you've been working in ACES or using color space transforms to adapt BM Film to Alexa before your powergrades, you know that gen5 is nearly identical to a Gen4 to Alexa LOG tranform and that's so much bueno. You can now create cube luts from the best arri powergrades because you don't have any colorspace transform in the nodes (which were ignored by Resolve's lut creation process)
Wow! The gap between 10.000 dollars plus cinema camera and cheaper cinema camera is getting more and more narrow as time and technology goes on. That’s incredible!!
07:00 For the comparison
The hero we need
Gen5 and the rest of the updates makes my 4k even better. Was thinking about a 6k Pro but to be honest, the only thing i miss i the EF Mount and the ND's. I have a Speedbooster and VND already, so why buy something new and make them obsolete... Going to use the 4k until it dies.
thanks for this comparison, i always wondered how both cameras faired.
I'm excited about this update. I hope maybe a future update will add a shadow and highlight histogram along with the RGB histogram. That would be cool.
Thank you Spencer :)
Good to see Corey on the channel. Haha!
nice update!
Difference in color between cameras (after adjustment): slight.
Difference in price between cameras: not slight.
Trying to get a good look of your rig, would be cool to see a rig tour!
Dang we are all nerds. Excited for some new camera release.
Other people must think were crazy when se speak to them of our excitement.
Easiest way to get your head around this is to load the DR Arri LUT onto a ramp and look at how it treats the different RGB channels. Once you understand that as principle you can simply use CST's to tweak to your hearts content to mix and match most cameras when shooting RAW. Or you can use one of the many powergrades available to put your camera into a near perfect match for Arri colour space without the clamping that happens with a LUT based workflow.
Hey Bro the reason I said what I said in the last video is because you are a great youtuber and I like your content and it seemed like you were hating on a camera and we weren't use to it. I could be wrong and my bad bro I still love the content and will continue to watch.
I wish they would make a 4k pro. I don’t want 6k or an EF mount.. I do want an articulating screen and an evf..I already invested money in Nikon ZF glass with a speedbooster. I like having the MFT with the speedbooster which gives me a wider fov than the 35mm sensor. Idk I guess I could just convert my Nikon glass to EF and give up on that wider FOV.
You can rig your camera for a tilting screen and buy an evf for it
I hear you. EF Mount sucks and 4k is more pragmatic
Updated my BMPCC 4K last night, colour looks really nice. Definitely a big step up. And yes, the LUT is great - makes working with it while shooting a much more useful tool.
Ace video!
The BMPCC 6k here has that radioactive yellowness that comes with Sony sensors (no matter the manufacturer of the cameras). This needs to go, and in order to go, Sony themselves need to fix their sensor filters, since the problem starts before light hits the sensor (it's independent of color science or grading). On top of that, the bmpcc6k has massive IR pollution, very evident on this clip. Overall though, gen5 is very welcome addition. If only they fix the bugs they introduced for the bmpcc4k and speedboosters. Finally, when you shoot people like that, please ask them to wear colorful clothes, so we can judge color better.
The best solution to this is Rawlite's OLPF
@@BradCage i hear about it a lot lately and saw that results, and it really seems to fix all the color shifting!
But $500 is kinda pricey
And the glass is a little bit thicker so I'm no sure about speedboosters
@@BradCage Can't use it on the pro sadly
I had IR pollution on my Komodo
What are your thoughts on up grading to gen 5 midproject? Is it going to be a headache or will it all fit together nicely?
Curious what your colorgrading workflow looks like the the BMPCC
Excelente! I love my bmpcc4k, i don't need more
I am interested to see how close the Gen 5 comes to the Alexa in different situations. Emotive color luts are great to get an exact match to the Alexa though. Cinematch isn't very accurate.
Spenser, do you prefer the 6k pro or the zcam f6?
I own the zcam f6 currently, and i've rented out the bmpcc 6k pro.. I feel like the image that comes out of the 6k pro is a lot better in my opinion.. what do you think?
So do you recomend to use the BMD film to extended video LUT rather than a third party LUT (BUTTERY kind of stufff)? Cheers for answering
Really wanting to see the reds in Gen5 on the pocket.
The red clipping issue has been fixed with gen 5.
Check out CVP they did a test on the pro. The reds are much better
Yea, they're really much better. IME small adjustments in the vectors of green, blue, and slight desat. of yellow can be done to make the image a little better---but the red vector is unimpeachably good. It's a great image with great colors.
what lens was used with the bm vs arri comparison? did you have different lenses on the cameras?
I don’t know if you’d be interested in doing this, but I’d love to see a shootout with an Alexa, Gen 5, and some of the solutions that try to recreate the Alexa look in post, such as CineMatch and Juan Melara’s powergrade.
Just dropped one on my page.
Did you use an IR-cut filter for bmpcc 6k?
Hi. Just updated my bmpcc4k to latest version 7.3 and got gen 5 color science (it applies permanently for braw and prores). Currently I'm using Davinci Resolve Studio 7.1.1 build 9 and seems that I can't find any options to correctly convert Blackmagic Film Gen 5 to rec709 fro proper color correction. Most of the time I used color space transform effect to correctly convert to 709 and now seems there is no option to do this. Any suggections?
I was very happy with the built in LUT for when I’m streaming. I was not thrilled with the gen4 LUT and had to use a non-Blackmagic LUT
Hey, you can add any LUTs in the blackmagic pocket cameras so you'll have a right out of the camera footage that is usable without any color grading in post?
@@AexoeroV Yes, you can add any LUT you want to use with the footage by loading the LUT onto the camera from an SD card. You get the option to burn the LUT into the footage or just have the LUT be a visual reference while monitoring your shoot.
@@christianhotter cool, thanks! What non Blackmagic have you used? Im looking for natural and pleasant colors! Im not too god at editing and i know nothing about color grading so im looking for an easy way to get good footage right out of the camera! I just want to learn slowly and to film for my self but now that im almost 45 all this new tech and software seems a bit hard for me to learn! It would have been nice to have someone here in my country and town who could shed some more light about filmography!
@@AexoeroV for straight out of the camera, I would not suggest a Blackmagic camera. Blackmagic cameras are most useful for those who plan on doing work in an editor. I’ve used Sony and Nikon cameras and I personally prefer the out of camera look from the Nikon. I also have better lenses for my Nikon, so that’s a factor for me.
@@christianhotter thank you so much for your opinions and info!
Updated the 4k. Now the Iris control is missing on the LCD screen. I noticed yours was missing also.
Just happened to me but I found a way to fix it. I have the Viltrox EF-M2 II speedbooster. Just hold the lens release button for a few seconds and the Iris control should come back
Great video! Is there a way to customice this Gen5 lut because I use it for livestreaming. A little more contrast and highlights will be great 😎
You can customize any LUT in post.
@@spensersakurai but not in livestream 😉 is there a Software to customize this lut?
It completely messed up my raw player and i had to do a whole reinstall to the beta 2.3 as it was at 2.1 before
Weird... is that normal im new to all this
I mean the camera is for a person who is entirely new to BM (like me). Original 6k owners probably weren't the target market but they anticipated some spill over
Hi everyone,
Will all the 6k's have GEN5 pre-installed from now on? Since ALL my LUTS were created to be in use for GEN4 Colors only, is there an option to ''downgrade'' my freshly bought Cameras to GEn4 again?
What about compatibility? I am on an older Mac Pro that doesn't run higher than Resolve 15.
Will it edit?
does the Gen 5 color science have any difference if i were to record in proRes? :)
I dont know, i think gen5 is just a flatter version of gen 4, i dont' see color difference except for extended video and video gamma, even neon supression can be fix by gamut compression on raw tab button
I strongly recommend phantom luts (currently based on gen 4 but will update sometime) to emulate arri color. I purchase two versions of them specifically developped for bmpcc 4k as well as a7siii and they are amazing.
At 7:17, his black shirt has IR polution so its hard to tell how accurate the colors are without properly filtering the IR polution. This could've been great had you did it correctly.
Hi Spencer, I updated my Bmpcc4k to ver 7.3 and now I have landed up in an issue related to iris control. I am not able to control my iris as I am using a viltrox 0.71 focal reducer so that I am able to use my Canon EF lenses. When I bought the camera and the focal reducer I simply went to viltrox website and update the firmware on the focal reducer, which gave me back iris control on the camera. However I don't see any update rollled out for viltrox focal reducer. So yeah I think I am stuck my all lenses wide open 😅. Could you suggest any work around so that I can keep my 7.3 update on my camera and get my iris control back!!
i'm having same problem. reached out to viltrox and they said they were looking into it, look for an update in the future from viltrox.
Try rolling back ur camera to 6.9.5 and use viltrox 3.5 this combo gave me iris control again
@@nelsonpun . I waited for few days and to my surprise Viltrox released a firmware update (3.6) and that fixes the Iris control. You can now update your camera back to 7.3 and also update your Viltrox to 3.6. Enjoy best of both worlds :D

7:02 Gen 5 stuff begins 👍👍
What if I don't select bmpcc blackmagic design video gen 5 for the timeline color space in da vinci resolve, and say final output should be rec 709. Would it be wrong or matter in what why if I just select a random color space instead of bmpcc blackmagic design video gen 5 for the timeline color space?
How do you deal with the Extended Video Lut? It’s unusable in my Pocket Pro, too much contrast and it overexposed the image. Gen5 needs much more light and this Lut is not meant for that profile. Idk, maybe it’s my unit or I’m doing something wrong but I had to create a new Lut to properly monitor gen5 and overexposed a little bit to avoid the noise in the shadows.
Whoa! No drinking of beer in this video. What's the world coming to?! 😁
Love these videos but tbh I’m happy to miss out on hearing someone slurp into a microphone.
@@compulsiveinaction so true ! I hate that.
Why do they not have colour bars if they are gonna do screen calibration?
Has anyone been able to get the 7.3 BRAW files to work with DR16? They playback fine on my machine but won't load into Resolve and I had to go back to 7.
Unfortuntely I can't upgrade as DR17 stutters on my old 2015 iMac

You need a IR cut filter for the 6K
7:20 put an IR Cut filter on 6K pro and redo the test you will be surprised))
why tf have they not updated the Ursa Mini Pro G2
Gen5 is just flatter then Gen4
I personally think it won't help anything if you shoot in braw and colour grade in davinci resolve
The luts are just for previewing purposes on the cam right as shown here?

This update screwed up iris control on my viltrox ef-m2. dont download it until viltrox releases a firmware newer than 3.5
They need to fix the bug on the 4k can't change the aperture after the update with a speed booster attached
I noticed the same; I saw another video where if you leave he camera on, detach the lens and attach it again (keep the adapter on) you'll be able to control the aperture again, mine worked 1st time, might take you more, just quoting what the person said
@@TheLXPro man I just went back to the older version
@@PAINFULLYGIFTEDVISUALS That’s what I might do too tbh
@@TheLXPro yeah I went back on my 4k and 6k so the color science matches
sensor size?
Did you use a IR Cut filter on the BM? The black shirt wasn’t black enough. It’s hard to compare colors is pollution is affecting the Black Magic
Check out how bad the IR pollution is vs the Alexa 8:00
I cant edit my video on resolve 16
let me update because I need it in camera instead of always changing it in Davinci
Im using the Phantom LUTs for the BMPCC6K Gen4 and Im very happy with the result. The image is very close to the ARRI color science. Will there be an option to choose between Gen4 and Gen5 inside the camera, or will it change automatically to Gen5 with the update? Cause this would mean I won’t be able to use this LUTs on the camera in the preview mode.
Yea I'm confused. I've been in Gen 5 for a while now. I understand that now its "in camera" but as far as in post I've been editing in Gen 5 for I cant even remember how long. Has anyone else been already using Gen5 as well, or am I forgetting something?
Being able to light with Gen 5 in camera is a big deal for me personally. Yes you have been able to color with it for quite some time.

@@rubenvaneupen7327 Yea sure. I just dont think the colors will come out as accurate, since the Film5 to Video was specifically for the camera's sensor.

What focus hunting disaster are you filming these videos with? That's why I don't care about AF. Why spend more when we already have the accessories?
