Have a CX-90 Signature on order. Looked at a Telluride/Palisade but with a 12 month + wait if the dealer will even take an order for a 2023 MY, plus what is a pretty agricultural engine it was a no brainier. CX-90 arriving end of June for me.
My daughter and son-in-law wanted to buy a Telluride last October and like you said the dealer wouldn't even take their order. They ended up with a new Nissan Pathfinder (8 seat) and they are quite happy with it.
Just a Mazda fan here. But I love this new powertrain from Mazda and the design is beautiful and the interior is very premium and if I can afford I would go definitely with CX-90.😂😂
I have ordered the top trim CX-90 PHEV with the off-white Napa leather interior and maple wood inserts. I really like the less boxy exterior look and the near luxury interior of this model plus the EV range is good for my uses at 42km. The PHEV comes as a 7 seater in the top trim and that is fine. It seems to me that if you need more than 7 seats you really should be looking at a minivan.
@@robertduklus6555 My dealer tells me a test drive CX-90 should be in "soon". I think for the moment they are shipping around test drive cars from dealership to dealership, sort of a week here and a week there. I placed my order a month or so ago (whenever the reveal was). They say delivery of my car in the fall sometime though he may be setting expectations so that maybe I can be surprised on the upside. We'll see.
I've recently cancelled my order for a Hyundai Palisade Ultimate Calligraphy (that was due to arrive in May) and placed an order for a Mazda CX-90 Signature. Yes, the Korean twins have a larger interior, some added tech and cost less, but as an automotive enthusiast and a current owner of a Mazda CX-9 Signature I believe I made the right choice. I have a family of 4 and the rear seats in our CX-9 have been used only a dozen times in the past 6 years. I do still believe that the fit and finish is of a higher quality as well with Mazda and the powertrain in the CX-90 is far superior with better gas mileage then the Korean offerings. If you have a larger family or need more interior space the Palisade and Telluride are excellent vehicles (as well as the Honda Pilot), but the new CX-90 with its inherent better driving dynamics (FR layout) "fits" myself and and my family needs.
Styling of course is subjective. Personally, I prefer the Mazda CX-90. I own a Mazda CX-9 since 2019. Its been perfect in regards to reliability. It handles better than any car maker in this class. And it still looks beautiful.
I’m impressed by both. They both have amazing interior combinations, but I think the Mazda has a bit more of an edge. The Mazda is remains to be quite a rare sight in my area (Aylmer/Gatineau/Ottawa). Compare that to… I hardly can manage any sort of drive without seeing a Telluride these days… noticeably more than Hyundai’s Palisade. So, though I am impressed with both… I would probably spend my hard earned cash on the Mazda. Thanks for another comparison video. Cheers.
CX-90 for me! The Telluride is an amazing vehicle. I like the overall design, inside and out, even though the steering wheel, the new DRLs and new wheels don’t sit well with me. But the CX-90 is the special one here. Mazda nailed the details that matter to me, like the beautiful steering wheel. Yes, it has some shortcomings, like price and space, but it looks and I am sure, based on my experience, feels special, as well.
I would still choose the Mazda CX90. Kia has never been an option to me given the bad reputation with customer/technical service support they offer. They cover up most of the post-sales issues and headaches by offering more bells and whistles. It is like buying an old house that looks great but there having asbestos and leaks or bad foundation lurking underneath the great exterior. I can never trust a company that instead of fixing blowing up engines, would just patch it and add a bandaid with no consideration with their customers. If within 10 years, the kia is still as great is it is now then I can consider it. I guess the decision will be dependent on who the owner will be and what is there criteria for buying an SUV. Just my thoughts and personal opinion based on experience. So no haters. I love the review and both of you. Keep it up. Peace!
Few reviewers consider the waiting time and the dealer markup of Telluride... Just comparing MSRP is actually not fair. It's very common to have either >6 month waiting time, or >5k markup, sometimes both for a Telluride. But for CX-90, I ordered one with exact trim and color I want at MSRP without any options a couple weeks back, and my dealer just told me it's on the way to their site. Considering that CX-90 is a much better choice. I'll come back and confirm it's really MSRP once I get the car.
Emotionally, CX-90 is definitely the one to take. Especially with the BMW-like inline 6 turbo engine. Telluride is definitely a rational choice given its more spacious interior space, when it comes to 3rd row and luggage space. CX-90, like CX-9 that precedes it. Its still a bit too small for Canadian, American is even more serious, taste. Given Kia's iffy dealer network in B.C, even after all these years, it remains the same. Mazda is definitely my take.
@@ravenguard1495 You can compare those two trims for sure, but the CX-90 still doesn't come with all the features the Telluride has for the equivalent price point. The CX-90 is missing ventilated rear seats and the Telluride offers a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat and 4-way lumbar support, the Mazda has 8 and 2-way power lumbar support. Even on the passenger seat, the Telluride offers 2-way lumbar support which the Mazda doesn't have. There's also cosmetic exterior differences like black cladding on the wheel arches instead of body coloured on the top trim CX-90. Some really don't like the cladding and prefer the higher trims to avoid the cladding. You can actually go a trim down on the Telluride to get similar features to the CX-90 Premium Plus model, the SX Prestige for $50,590 USD still has heated and ventilated rear seats plus the 10-way power driver's seat with lumbar support and the power passenger seat with lumbar support. If you want to go further and save a few more dollars, get the SX Telluride model for $47,690 USD, it has all the features but no ventilated or heated rear seats. One thing the Mazda has that the Telluride doesn't is wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto which starts on the Preferred Plus trim. It really comes down to what you are looking for, some features may be important to some and not so much for others. It might be about keeping the price down and buying the trim that offers 8-passenger seating or the one that has the more engaging drive. Different needs and wants for each buyer. I prefer the seat comfort in the CX-90 and the way it handles over the Telluride. But, I also enjoy the space and the infotainment system in the Kia.
@@andreaspencer9813 as you say specifications differs quite a bit but will make more sense comparing two similarly priced trims. Then preferences are preferences and obviously both have different strong points. Madza engine seems far superior even in base model, it has a proper panoramic sunroof and not that 2 parts joke in the Telluride, far better driving dynamics (I tried Telluride and drives quite bad), better reputation for reliability and service network (at least where I stay)plus far superior quality materials (frankly apart from seats even the cx5 signature I drove once was having better quality interior than telluride). On the other side Madza loses badly on technological and gadgets for price point and it far less spacious and versatile than telluride. It all depends what you are looking for. Considering that I am looking into 3 rows SUV mostly because most of my friend start having one kid and I am pest off to have to take 2 cars when we go out in 4 adults plus a child seat, I don’t care much about space, both have plenty for my needs. They will both appeal to audience with different needs in my opinion.
Both vehicles are great! Only vehicle that like is Telluride’s interior design better but CX-90 has beautiful exterior. What can I say? I think Telluride is a winner. Cheers! ☕️☕️
You are right, both are terrific options and some may take the Mazda for its fun and engaging driving dynamics, other might go for the Telluride for space.
It looks more modern but the cx90 (based on experience with the cx60) "feels" more luxurious. You have to sit in them to really see the difference with the mazda.
Mazda all day, any day! I actually think that the Mazda looks better and more upscale and elegant. It drives much better and the interior is more upscale. Let’s appreciate that Mazda even had the money to make this with how small their revenue is in comparison to Hyundai and Kia.

I’ve only owned one car outside the American big 3- a 1994 Mazda Protégé. It was a great car and it causes me to lean to Mazda. But … the Teluride has that square profile I enjoy so much. And they changed those headlights that looked like tail lights. Great comparison guys. 👍🏼🙌🏼

12 cubic feet is two medium size suitcases, and when was the last person that filled their 3 row SUV TO THE CEILING??? They don’t. So cubic feet isn’t even an accurate usable metric other than to postulate a comparison. Nor is it ever the sole reason you buy a premium SUV. The telluride isn’t rear wheel drive, it’s only pseudo premium, and honesty shouldn’t be compared to the top trim of the CX-90 regardless of options. Why? Because people who want the packaging that the CX-90 offers are comparing it to luxury makes that have the same packaging. Compare this with ACTUAL competitors, not just class and price competition because obviously Mazda is blurring the lines. They want you to see this as an alternative to a BMW not an alternative the Telluride. Andrea, you think like I think and I appreciate your take. :)
Agree about seats options on CX90, they should makes it as an options so customers can have theirs choice. I ordered the Signature Trim but I wish I can have a bench seats.
not illegal to sell a car for more than it is worth . . just say no . . walked into a kia dealership in CO. Was there for 5 minutes they said MSRP right away
Customer always has the edge in buying a new car. I would never buy a new car on price tag over MSPR. The supply chain is no longer an issue so it just the dealership making BS excuse to squeeze more out of the customer.
Something else to add, Cx-90 is Japan built like the CX5. Not American (CX-50) or Mexican ( 3 ). Double wishbone up front and multilink out back and no awful Torsion beam out back like the 50/30/3 ...
What about long term reliability and durability? Some reviewers hint at quality / reliability concerns with the Telluride, in particular the drive train. Any data on this?
@@mbenton6 I have no problem with JD Power. In their studies, they follow owners of Kia models for three years and report any issues. It's a very thorough study. I also speak to many people who own Kia models daily and they are extremely happy with their purchase.
The Telluride is such an awesome car and hard to beat. If they offered it with a hybrid option, I would be all over it. However, I am waiting for the Grand Highlander.
The Hyundai and Kia look good but in person they feel much cheaper than the Mazda. The Mazda is a step above in most categories. It’s a bargain in base trim around 40k. Tons of standard features.
Just to clarify what the Atkinson cycle is. The intake valve closes later than bottom dead center meaning it's open during part of the traditional compression stroke. This forces some of the intake air back out in to the intake manifold. The efficiency gain comes from the reduction of force required to complete the compression stroke. Compare that to the Buda cycle which closes the intake valve early, trapping less air in the combustion chamber, achieving similar results. Both of the above cycles are ussually accompanied with higher compression ratios which help efficiency again. The otto cycle is the standard way the engine runs(for power, not so much efficiency)
Both of you made some good points, but it is the MAZDA for me! 100%, no doubts. As a current Mazda owner, the car's reliability has been rock solid, it hasn't started a fire, not even once!!
Having spent years in Auto Sales Management, at this time my choice is going to be Mazda every time. Though I'm not a Mazda "fan" because of that crappy Torsion Beam Suspension thing, but having sold Hyundai/Kia & Mazda in our stores, my choice is going to be Mazda every time. Their quality is up there with Honda and Toyota. Meanwhile, Kia is still trying to mitigate that $1.3 Billion settlement over ENGINE FIRES, less than 2 yrs ago. But I'll be watching their electrics. We'll see if they improve.

@@akhere07 the Ascent's CVT gets negative/bad reviews from different car reviewers, but honestly after driving one I did not experience any of the dislikes from the transmission we hear from reviewers. I really enjoyed driving the car. It's an SUV not a sports car so I expect some delay/lag in acceleration. The Ascent doesn't get the "love" it deserves.
Good comparison review. I'm a Mazda fan but there are too many Mazda "firsts" in the new CX90 (new engine, new wet clutch tranny, new chassis, PHEV option, etc.) They might have everything sorted out but at this price point I certainly wouldn't consider a purchase until a few years of reliability data were available. If you have to buy now, the Telluride is the obvious choice.
I've owned three new Mazda's over the past years. Two CX-7's and a CX-5. Both models were first gen, zero issues with all three. I'm sure Mazda has done more than adequate testing. Anything I own that's built in Japan, cars, cameras, lenses, binoculars are all well-made and of high quality. Time will tell, but I'd expect the CX-90 to be very reliable out of the gate.
Interesting reading the comments after a day or so. I guess the thing is that Mazda and Kia are going after different customers. Kia has built a great 3 row, the best many would say, but would it be in Mazda's best interest to just copy that and try and built a better Kia? Maybe, but Mazda going to market with a whole different approach isn't a bad strategy.either. For me I wasn't interested at all in the Kia and was looking at a whole different category until the CX-90 PHEV reveal. When I told my wife about the Mazda, knowing me she was skeptical. Then I showed her the Motormouth CX-90 reveal video and I said "Doesn't this seem like the car for us?" She agreed that it sounded exactly like the kind of car that would be for us. I placed my order even before the drive reviews came out and there's been nothing in the drive reviews to change my mind. Chalk one up for Mazda I guess but will it be hot in the market? Who knows but they've created some buzz by striking out on a different path from the rest of the family hauler mainstream crowd. Have to see how it plays out.
This segment is so competitive. The newest version always ups the ante. How would you compare the new turbo 4 and hybrid Highlander trims against the cx90?
The US on the lower trims actually come with a moonroof, I don't think Canadians get anything on the lower trims. At least it's not listed on the Canadian Mazda site. The higher trims get the panoramic sunroof in both countries. Hope that makes sense.
Love your reviews, keep up the great work! What did you think about the Mazda CX-90 Signature edition with the tan interior? I need to see it in person, I would have preferred a black nappa leather interior that comes in a lower trim. We just got a third husky so I'm seriously considering going to a 3-row SUV so the dogs have more room. I really can't decide between the CX-90, the Telluride, the Pilot and the 2024 VW Atlas. I think they are all great in their own ways.

Sooo everyone wants the Mazda cx90 because it’s a luxury car at an affordable price with TOYOTA reliability Rides/ handles better Sportier/ more athletic Premium exterior with an elegant luxury look LEAGUES above for interior comfort design looks and FEEL Plus better fuel economy🤙🏽 Yeah not a clue why anyone would buy the telluride it’s boxy bubbly handles like garbage weak power train poor reliability etc. Kia/ Hyundai just have good warranties and a top tier lane keeping assist which during the day feels like autonomous driving but it’s not to be relied on So it’s not much competition for the Mazda tbh

Telluride was Consumer Repots top choice in the 3-row SUV segment for 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Likewise with Car & Driver and Road & Track. Perhaps you should consider more than one source for your automotive information.

I own a 2020 CX-9 Grand Touring and love it. Looked to get the CX-90 PHEV but not available until the fall. So I might look at the Outlander PHEV. Thoughts?
I have a bunch of grandkids and great grandkids to move around, and I too think Mazda should rethink their seating options. I'm in the market for one of these vehicles and the one extra seat the Telluride has makes a difference Mazda.
I really think manufacturers have to rethink these decisions, people want the option of being able to move more people and get all the bells and whistles on the top trim. The CX-90 is such a great 3-row SUV, it should be at least a 7-passenger vehicle on the top trim. Honda gives consumers the option of an 8-passenger vehicle on the top trim with a removable second row centre console.
Andrea and Zack, your comments on seating are spot on. It is unfortunately a broken-record gripe that needs to keep being repeated, I've read a lot of the remarks here and many or maybe even most are missing the point on this issue. For many buyers, it's not about the 3rd row seat capacity--or 7 vs 8 total--it's about WHERE they are. For many it's about a 2nd row captain's chairs-only spec being forced in the top trims which is confounding. It severely limits the utility/versatility. No one wants to sit--or have to seat others--in the 3rd row if they don't have to, and for many this ilk of vehicle is for occasional 3rd row use only...and when they do, not for long. And, for a family of five (including a canine member as possibly that 5th), that space out back is needed for luggage/cargo (!@#?!) on a road trip or even just regular errands or fun'ing about town. (And no, you shouldn't have to "buy a van if you need...," as some knee-jerking comments suggested, if you just want to seat 5 in regular (1st and 2nd row) seating). Not nearly everyone wants to have to get/use a rooftop luggage carrier--for lack of that one missing passenger space. This upper trim seating game many of the makers are playing is--I'll state it more strongly than Zack who is trying to be more civil--sheer lunacy. As they said, give people the CHOICE of 2nd row bench (or captain's chairs) WHATEVER the capacity of the 3rd row. For many if not most the latter is immaterial for the majority of their needs. They want the space and relative luxury and better cargo room that this size vehicle affords, but don't regularly need or want to use the extra seats (out back) again if they don't absolutely have to. AND, it's not just about the customer who's losing out... if they thought about it, the maker also is losing by needlessly limiting the options and thus its ultimate (potential) sales market... or at the very least ticking off customers who want top trim features but need that second row bench and have to move on to get the nicer features. Almost everyone is in on this "silly" seating/trims game, but among the very few selections out there, you can do it (finally) on the Pathfinder just by checking the bench seat box on the top trim, and can come darn close to "building" a top trim on the Infiniti QX60 by fully option'ing the next-to-top trim with otherwise unique to (standard on) top trim items. (Mostly "vision" and towing packages, but not the top's analine leather and two-tone paint). And, if it is unclear, Telluride gets that impressive-sounding "7" passengers on the top (ditto 8 on a lesser trim) by squeezing 3 in the third row, and not with a second row bench option (on the top trim). I'm not dis'ing the number 7, but that distracts from the fact of no second-row bench.
I like the cx90 for styling and engine. But I am disappointed that the top trim limited to 6 seating, WHY? So when come to purchase I am undecided between these 2 vehicles. Maybe buy cx90 for the styling and engine and Kia to move people.
Luxurious space is the best way to describe it. Don't get me wrong, the CX 90 is beautiful, but without the space, it's like the CX 9. I may be bias because I own a fully loaded (with nightfall) 2022 telluride, but it's A LOT cheaper (than the top CX 90) and extremely comfortable and easy to drive.
People entitled to their opinion and usage. You can't go wrong on the Telluride but my choice is based on design, ride quality, gas efficiency, space and all the little nitty things that comes with a 40+K midr size SUV. If it's 2021, I would have bought the Kia Telluride for that price in a heartbeat but it's 2023 and CX90 stolen my heart away.
@@yummytummy88 True, but I'm talking about the top end of the 2. At $60,000, that's an $8,000 increase between the them. That's probably around 2 years worth of fuel. So at that point, I would probably wait, and just spend a bit more and go with the EV9. Maybe?!
@@kevinkraklio3114 most American looking to buy a 3rd row SUV are not looking to spend $60K for fancy privilege tech and luxuries. To me, $45K is the max I am willing to spend on import of foreign car. Until the day I can afford a $60-100K SUV, I will continue to view these video on buying the best SUV on a friendly budget.
Mazda warranty in Canada is superb! (5 year unlimited mileage power train) vs Kia (blown motors, catching fire, transmission issues … dreadful recall issues!) … I’d stick to Mazda, Toyota or Honda thank you!!? …
I do agree with you on 6 seat mazda only option. As much as I like the new cx-90, it is a deal breaker. I have 3 kids and grandparents that I'd like to be able to take them all on the trip without renting a van. With Telluride selling at 7k-10k dealer premium above MSRP I would wait for new Grand Highlander. Ball is on the buyer's side, finally.

I'd like to replace my Explorer Platinum, which has been an excellent vehicle. The Telluride's cargo capacity would be its equal (which is essential for me) but I'd be giving up a lot of horsepower. If Kia would bolt on a turbo then they'd absolutely have my attention. Giving up our Ford's massaging seats would be a big loss on our long distance trips. Our nearest Mazda dealer is a 3 hr drive away, which has to be a consideration. As much as I have a very favourable impression of Mazda quality and styling, and would like to have that big engine, the reduced cargo space is a deal killer. With regard to seating capacity - we are seniors. Being able to pack 3 generations of family in the one vehicle is also a pretty high priority. Maybe next year we'll find our perfect vehicle. In the interim, we'll be keeping the Ford at least three years longer than originally planned.
Please review the top of the line CX-90 against the MDX Type S. Have already heard some journalists say they'd buy the Mazda over the MDX and would love your take on it!
Motormouth is more on the aesthetics. Those who said they'd buy CX90 over MDX have different take in reviewing the cars. The driving dynamics and what's underneath. Not aesthetics.
YES! I just don't understand it. It is literally a complaint from almost reviewer for years now, and almost every owner I've come across. How do they ignore such a critical complaint for so long?
CX90 all day long , superior in so many ways but at being a mini van alternative where Kia may make some sense. If someone can not see what CX90 offers and picks cheaper and generic Kia over than that driver will have to deal with all all the cons of it in comparison to downright premium and bordering luxury CX90. This seems like jealous Honda boy choice against another superb Mazds product , vandeta like choice. Im not the first one to see it . This channel uses credibility with such unobjective choice .
The Mazda won't sell too well. The big bulbous look and small interior dimensions will turn too many people off right from the get-go. If Mazda finally cared about brand cache, they would also included the cx70 in the North American market. They would then fill all large segments, and I will bet their North American market jumps up by tens of percent if they dared bring their cx70 as the midsize two-row alternative.

If you have a larger family or need more interior space the Palisade and Telluride are excellent vehicles (as well as the Honda Pilot), but the new CX-90 with its inherent better driving dynamics (FR layout) "fits" myself and and my family needs.
Styling of course is subjective. Personally, I prefer the Mazda CX-90. I own a Mazda CX-9 since 2019. Its been perfect in regards to reliability. It handles better than any car maker in this class. And it still looks beautiful.

I’m impressed by both. They both have amazing interior combinations, but I think the Mazda has a bit more of an edge. The Mazda is remains to be quite a rare sight in my area (Aylmer/Gatineau/Ottawa). Compare that to… I hardly can manage any sort of drive without seeing a Telluride these days… noticeably more than Hyundai’s Palisade. So, though I am impressed with both… I would probably spend my hard earned cash on the Mazda. Thanks for another comparison video. Cheers.

In the US, you can’t buy a Telluride for anywhere close to the MSRP. The CX-90 will likely be sold at MSRP or less.

The Telluride is an amazing vehicle. I like the overall design, inside and out, even though the steering wheel, the new DRLs and new wheels don’t sit well with me. But the CX-90 is the special one here. Mazda nailed the details that matter to me, like the beautiful steering wheel. Yes, it has some shortcomings, like price and space, but it looks and I am sure, based on my experience, feels special, as well.

I would still choose the Mazda CX90. Kia has never been an option to me given the bad reputation with customer/technical service support they offer. They cover up most of the post-sales issues and headaches by offering more bells and whistles. It is like buying an old house that looks great but there having asbestos and leaks or bad foundation lurking underneath the great exterior. I can never trust a company that instead of fixing blowing up engines, would just patch it and add a bandaid with no consideration with their customers. If within 10 years, the kia is still as great is it is now then I can consider it. I guess the decision will be dependent on who the owner will be and what is there criteria for buying an SUV. Just my thoughts and personal opinion based on experience. So no haters. I love the review and both of you. Keep it up. Peace!

Few reviewers consider the waiting time and the dealer markup of Telluride... Just comparing MSRP is actually not fair. It's very common to have either >6 month waiting time, or >5k markup, sometimes both for a Telluride. But for CX-90, I ordered one with exact trim and color I want at MSRP without any options a couple weeks back, and my dealer just told me it's on the way to their site. Considering that CX-90 is a much better choice. I'll come back and confirm it's really MSRP once I get the car.
Emotionally, CX-90 is definitely the one to take. Especially with the BMW-like inline 6 turbo engine. Telluride is definitely a rational choice given its more spacious interior space, when it comes to 3rd row and luggage space. CX-90, like CX-9 that precedes it. Its still a bit too small for Canadian, American is even more serious, taste. Given Kia's iffy dealer network in B.C, even after all these years, it remains the same. Mazda is definitely my take.
$9K more than the telluride plus premium fuel that will quickly add $$ ? No to Mazda for me, Telluride any day

@@ravenguard1495 You can compare those two trims for sure, but the CX-90 still doesn't come with all the features the Telluride has for the equivalent price point. The CX-90 is missing ventilated rear seats and the Telluride offers a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat and 4-way lumbar support, the Mazda has 8 and 2-way power lumbar support. Even on the passenger seat, the Telluride offers 2-way lumbar support which the Mazda doesn't have. There's also cosmetic exterior differences like black cladding on the wheel arches instead of body coloured on the top trim CX-90. Some really don't like the cladding and prefer the higher trims to avoid the cladding. You can actually go a trim down on the Telluride to get similar features to the CX-90 Premium Plus model, the SX Prestige for $50,590 USD still has heated and ventilated rear seats plus the 10-way power driver's seat with lumbar support and the power passenger seat with lumbar support. If you want to go further and save a few more dollars, get the SX Telluride model for $47,690 USD, it has all the features but no ventilated or heated rear seats. One thing the Mazda has that the Telluride doesn't is wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto which starts on the Preferred Plus trim. It really comes down to what you are looking for, some features may be important to some and not so much for others. It might be about keeping the price down and buying the trim that offers 8-passenger seating or the one that has the more engaging drive. Different needs and wants for each buyer. I prefer the seat comfort in the CX-90 and the way it handles over the Telluride. But, I also enjoy the space and the infotainment system in the Kia.
@@andreaspencer9813 as you say specifications differs quite a bit but will make more sense comparing two similarly priced trims. Then preferences are preferences and obviously both have different strong points. Madza engine seems far superior even in base model, it has a proper panoramic sunroof and not that 2 parts joke in the Telluride, far better driving dynamics (I tried Telluride and drives quite bad), better reputation for reliability and service network (at least where I stay)plus far superior quality materials (frankly apart from seats even the cx5 signature I drove once was having better quality interior than telluride). On the other side Madza loses badly on technological and gadgets for price point and it far less spacious and versatile than telluride. It all depends what you are looking for. Considering that I am looking into 3 rows SUV mostly because most of my friend start having one kid and I am pest off to have to take 2 cars when we go out in 4 adults plus a child seat, I don’t care much about space, both have plenty for my needs. They will both appeal to audience with different needs in my opinion.

It looks more modern but the cx90 (based on experience with the cx60) "feels" more luxurious. You have to sit in them to really see the difference with the mazda.
Mazda all day, any day! I actually think that the Mazda looks better and more upscale and elegant. It drives much better and the interior is more upscale.

I’ve only owned one car outside the American big 3- a 1994 Mazda Protégé. It was a great car and it causes me to lean to Mazda. But … the Teluride has that square profile I enjoy so much. And they changed those headlights that looked like tail lights.

12 cubic feet is two medium size suitcases, and when was the last person that filled their 3 row SUV TO THE CEILING??? They don’t. So cubic feet isn’t even an accurate usable metric other than to postulate a comparison. Nor is it ever the sole reason you buy a premium SUV. The telluride isn’t rear wheel drive, it’s only pseudo premium, and honesty shouldn’t be compared to the top trim of the CX-90 regardless of options. Why? Because people who want the packaging that the CX-90 offers are comparing it to luxury makes that have the same packaging. Compare this with ACTUAL competitors, not just class and price competition because obviously Mazda is blurring the lines. They want you to see this as an alternative to a BMW not an alternative the Telluride.

Customer always has the edge in buying a new car. I would never buy a new car on price tag over MSPR. The supply chain is no longer an issue so it just the dealership making BS excuse to squeeze more out of the customer.
Something else to add, Cx-90 is Japan built like the CX5. Not American (CX-50) or Mexican ( 3 ). Double wishbone up front and multilink out back and no awful Torsion beam out back like the 50/30/3 ...

JD Power gives the Telluride a reliability score of 84/100 which is excellent.

@@mbenton6 I have no problem with JD Power. In their studies, they follow owners of Kia models for three years and report any issues. It's a very thorough study. I also speak to many people who own Kia models daily and they are extremely happy with their purchase.
The Telluride is such an awesome car and hard to beat. If they offered it with a hybrid option, I would be all over it. However, I am waiting for the Grand Highlander.
The Hyundai and Kia look good but in person they feel much cheaper than the Mazda. The Mazda is a step above in most categories. It’s a bargain in base trim around 40k. Tons of standard features.
Just to clarify what the Atkinson cycle is. The intake valve closes later than bottom dead center meaning it's open during part of the traditional compression stroke. This forces some of the intake air back out in to the intake manifold. The efficiency gain comes from the reduction of force required to complete the compression stroke.
Compare that to the Buda cycle which closes the intake valve early, trapping less air in the combustion chamber, achieving similar results. Both of the above cycles are ussually accompanied with higher compression ratios which help efficiency again.
The otto cycle is the standard way the engine runs(for power, not so much efficiency)

Having spent years in Auto Sales Management, at this time my choice is going to be Mazda every time. Though I'm not a Mazda "fan" because of that crappy Torsion Beam Suspension thing, but having sold Hyundai/Kia & Mazda in our stores, my choice is going to be Mazda every time. Their quality is up there with Honda and Toyota.
Meanwhile, Kia is still trying to mitigate that $1.3 Billion settlement over ENGINE FIRES, less than 2 yrs ago. But I'll be watching their electrics. We'll see if they improve.

double wishbone up front, and multilink in the Rear. Thankfully they didn't put the torsion setup in it like the 50 and 30, and 3, and....whatever else I'm forgetting. I am praying they don't screw up the CX-70 with a torsion setup too.

Subaru is cvt engine.. so not recommended. That's what I understood for many reviews.. but it's very good car though
@@akhere07 the Ascent's CVT gets negative/bad reviews from different car reviewers, but honestly after driving one I did not experience any of the dislikes from the transmission we hear from reviewers. I really enjoyed driving the car. It's an SUV not a sports car so I expect some delay/lag in acceleration. The Ascent doesn't get the "love" it deserves.

I'm a Mazda fan but there are too many Mazda "firsts" in the new CX90 (new engine, new wet clutch tranny, new chassis, PHEV option, etc.)
They might have everything sorted out but at this price point I certainly wouldn't consider a purchase until a few years of reliability data were available.
If you have to buy now, the Telluride is the obvious choice.
CX-60 was released last year with the same platform as CX-90. So this platform is a year old.
I've owned three new Mazda's over the past years. Two CX-7's and a CX-5. Both models were first gen, zero issues with all three. I'm sure Mazda has done more than adequate testing. Anything I own that's built in Japan, cars, cameras, lenses, binoculars are all well-made and of high quality. Time will tell, but I'd expect the CX-90 to be very reliable out of the gate.
Guess you were lucky with your CX-7s as they were notoriously unreliable with lots of blown turbo engines.

Interesting reading the comments after a day or so. I guess the thing is that Mazda and Kia are going after different customers. Kia has built a great 3 row, the best many would say, but would it be in Mazda's best interest to just copy that and try and built a better Kia? Maybe, but Mazda going to market with a whole different approach isn't a bad strategy.either. For me I wasn't interested at all in the Kia and was looking at a whole different category until the CX-90 PHEV reveal. When I told my wife about the Mazda, knowing me she was skeptical. Then I showed her the Motormouth CX-90 reveal video and I said "Doesn't this seem like the car for us?" She agreed that it sounded exactly like the kind of car that would be for us. I placed my order even before the drive reviews came out and there's been nothing in the drive reviews to change my mind. Chalk one up for Mazda I guess but will it be hot in the market? Who knows but they've created some buzz by striking out on a different path from the rest of the family hauler mainstream crowd. Have to see how it plays out.

The US on the lower trims actually come with a moonroof, I don't think Canadians get anything on the lower trims. At least it's not listed on the Canadian Mazda site. The higher trims get the panoramic sunroof in both countries. Hope that makes sense.
Love your reviews, keep up the great work! What did you think about the Mazda CX-90 Signature edition with the tan interior? I need to see it in person, I would have preferred a black nappa leather interior that comes in a lower trim. We just got a third husky so I'm seriously considering going to a 3-row SUV so the dogs have more room. I really can't decide between the CX-90, the Telluride, the Pilot and the 2024 VW Atlas. I think they are all great in their own ways.

I own a 2020 CX-9 Grand Touring and love it. Looked to get the CX-90 PHEV but not available until the fall. So I might look at the Outlander PHEV. Thoughts?
I have a bunch of grandkids and great grandkids to move around, and I too think Mazda should rethink their seating options. I'm in the market for one of these vehicles and the one extra seat the Telluride has makes a difference Mazda.
I really think manufacturers have to rethink these decisions, people want the option of being able to move more people and get all the bells and whistles on the top trim. The CX-90 is such a great 3-row SUV, it should be at least a 7-passenger vehicle on the top trim. Honda gives consumers the option of an 8-passenger vehicle on the top trim with a removable second row centre console.
Andrea and Zack, your comments on seating are spot on. It is unfortunately a broken-record gripe that needs to keep being repeated, I've read a lot of the remarks here and many or maybe even most are missing the point on this issue. For many buyers, it's not about the 3rd row seat capacity--or 7 vs 8 total--it's about WHERE they are. For many it's about a 2nd row captain's chairs-only spec being forced in the top trims which is confounding. It severely limits the utility/versatility. No one wants to sit--or have to seat others--in the 3rd row if they don't have to, and for many this ilk of vehicle is for occasional 3rd row use only...and when they do, not for long. And, for a family of five (including a canine member as possibly that 5th), that space out back is needed for luggage/cargo (!@#?!) on a road trip or even just regular errands or fun'ing about town. (And no, you shouldn't have to "buy a van if you need...," as some knee-jerking comments suggested, if you just want to seat 5 in regular (1st and 2nd row) seating). Not nearly everyone wants to have to get/use a rooftop luggage carrier--for lack of that one missing passenger space.
This upper trim seating game many of the makers are playing is--I'll state it more strongly than Zack who is trying to be more civil--sheer lunacy. As they said, give people the CHOICE of 2nd row bench (or captain's chairs) WHATEVER the capacity of the 3rd row. For many if not most the latter is immaterial for the majority of their needs. They want the space and relative luxury and better cargo room that this size vehicle affords, but don't regularly need or want to use the extra seats (out back) again if they don't absolutely have to. AND, it's not just about the customer who's losing out... if they thought about it, the maker also is losing by needlessly limiting the options and thus its ultimate (potential) sales market... or at the very least ticking off customers who want top trim features but need that second row bench and have to move on to get the nicer features.
Almost everyone is in on this "silly" seating/trims game, but among the very few selections out there, you can do it (finally) on the Pathfinder just by checking the bench seat box on the top trim, and can come darn close to "building" a top trim on the Infiniti QX60 by fully option'ing the next-to-top trim with otherwise unique to (standard on) top trim items. (Mostly "vision" and towing packages, but not the top's analine leather and two-tone paint). And, if it is unclear, Telluride gets that impressive-sounding "7" passengers on the top (ditto 8 on a lesser trim) by squeezing 3 in the third row, and not with a second row bench option (on the top trim). I'm not dis'ing the number 7, but that distracts from the fact of no second-row bench.

Reliability?
Mazda is generally above average for reliability. But this is a brand-new engine and platform, so there could be unexpected issues.
Mazda has a great track record, but this is a new powertrain, time will tell....
2-3-2 is the seat configuration. There are zero reasons why the second row should not have the middle seat.
I like the cx90 for styling and engine. But I am disappointed that the top trim limited to 6 seating, WHY? So when come to purchase I am undecided between these 2 vehicles. Maybe buy cx90 for the styling and engine and Kia to move people.
Seems to me that when looking for a 3 row vehicle, space is the key feature in seating and storage. I'm with Zack on Kia coming out ontop.
Luxurious space is the best way to describe it. Don't get me wrong, the CX 90 is beautiful, but without the space, it's like the CX 9. I may be bias because I own a fully loaded (with nightfall) 2022 telluride, but it's A LOT cheaper (than the top CX 90) and extremely comfortable and easy to drive.
People entitled to their opinion and usage. You can't go wrong on the Telluride but my choice is based on design, ride quality, gas efficiency, space and all the little nitty things that comes with a 40+K midr size SUV. If it's 2021, I would have bought the Kia Telluride for that price in a heartbeat but it's 2023 and CX90 stolen my heart away.
@@yummytummy88 True, but I'm talking about the top end of the 2. At $60,000, that's an $8,000 increase between the them. That's probably around 2 years worth of fuel. So at that point, I would probably wait, and just spend a bit more and go with the EV9. Maybe?!

I do agree with you on 6 seat mazda only option. As much as I like the new cx-90, it is a deal breaker. I have 3 kids and grandparents that I'd like to be able to take them all on the trip without renting a van. With Telluride selling at 7k-10k dealer premium above MSRP I would wait for new Grand Highlander. Ball is on the buyer's side, finally.

I'd like to replace my Explorer Platinum, which has been an excellent vehicle. The Telluride's cargo capacity would be its equal (which is essential for me) but I'd be giving up a lot of horsepower. If Kia would bolt on a turbo then they'd absolutely have my attention.
Giving up our Ford's massaging seats would be a big loss on our long distance trips.
Our nearest Mazda dealer is a 3 hr drive away, which has to be a consideration.
As much as I have a very favourable impression of Mazda quality and styling, and would like to have that big engine, the reduced cargo space is a deal killer.
With regard to seating capacity - we are seniors. Being able to pack 3 generations of family in the one vehicle is also a pretty high priority.
Maybe next year we'll find our perfect vehicle. In the interim, we'll be keeping the Ford at least three years longer than originally planned.
Please review the top of the line CX-90 against the MDX Type S. Have already heard some journalists say they'd buy the Mazda over the MDX and would love your take on it!
Motormouth is more on the aesthetics. Those who said they'd buy CX90 over MDX have different take in reviewing the cars. The driving dynamics and what's underneath. Not aesthetics.

YES! I just don't understand it. It is literally a complaint from almost reviewer for years now, and almost every owner I've come across. How do they ignore such a critical complaint for so long?

Kia should have never removed the amber DRLs.
CX90 all day long , superior in so many ways but at being a mini van alternative where Kia may make some sense.
If someone can not see what CX90 offers and picks cheaper and generic Kia over than that driver will have to deal with all all the cons of it in comparison to downright premium and bordering luxury CX90.
This seems like jealous Honda boy choice against another superb Mazds product , vandeta like choice. Im not the first one to see it .

The Mazda won't sell too well. The big bulbous look and small interior dimensions will turn too many people off right from the get-go.
If Mazda finally cared about brand cache, they would also included the cx70 in the North American market. They would then fill all large segments, and I will bet their North American market jumps up by tens of percent if they dared bring their cx70 as the midsize two-row alternative.
I believe Mazda is introducing the 2 row CX-70 to North America later this year.

My choice is the CX-90
