Yo, Brian. Great video. To add further context for the Samba, one of the major reasons it became popular here in the US in the late 70's and early 80's was due to the North American Soccer League NASL. Think of the NASL as that era's version of MLS although much more outlandish for a variety of reasons. About half the teams in the league during that time period played on AstroTurf, and players needed a shoe that could withstand the hard surface since traditional football boots would not work. Enter the Samba which was first imported into the US around that time. Since many of the top players in the league wore Sambas, many parents who attended games with their children decided to buy them for when their children played since many city fields along with middle/high school stadiums had AstroTurf. Even after the NASL folded in 1984, the Samba's popularity remained high due to many players in the indoor league Major Indoor Soccer League or MISL wearing it along with the subcultures you mentioned in the video. The original Samba in my view is the best shoe Adidas has ever made even though Adidas tried to discontinue it in the late 90's when they introduced the Samba Millennium which was basically the Samba upper with a modern sole and EVA cushioning to bring the shoe into the new century. Unlike the original, the Millennium only found popularity among indoor football players and Adidas stopped making it in 2012 in favor of simply continuing the original.
I wanted to ask/add, and I’m sure I could do my own research, but do you know when they started making the “OG” (smaller tongue, slightly slightly less-wide sole, other minor differences compared to the “Classic”)? I have only owned pairs of the Classic silhouette, and I also have a pair of Classics with the shorter leather tongue and all leather lining. I wish they would make/release more colorways in the Classic silhouette! It really seems like the better shoe. From the actual pitch to whatever else I want, best shoes ever. Edit: I wish they still made this updated cushioning samba you speak of!!! I’d love to try a pair

Awesome video as always fellas, and huge fan of your channel! Interesting take on how Samba got its name (1:45)… according to Torben Schumacher, Adidas GM: “Samba has always been for the people. adidas didn’t actually name it - ‘Samba’ was the nickname by fans of the shoe, inspired by some fancy footwork on the soccer field in the 1960s. It has been truly rewarding for us to see this most recent wave of love for the shoe. It’s a silhouette which lends itself to effortless style and carries a history which speaks for itself. When i first got into sneakers a couple years ago i was mainly hooked on Adidas stuff, and i wanted to get the black shelltoes because they looked like classic soccer cleats. Your video is very insightful around the whole history and design for Samba, I own a pair and found them really comfortable to wear, thanks for the content :)
i ride fixed gear bikes and the sambas are durable (both the sole and the leather upper) so when your shoe is going in and out of pedal straps for fixed gear it's not a problem. Also the waffle pattern is a good interface of pedals. And the leather is nice in colder climates
WHen did the Samba get butchered you could still by Proper Samba what hey now call " Super Samba " in Debenhams in 2009 in black leather with he massive white rubber biit on he front and the blue suede version, so when did we get this pile of shit that looks like a skateboarding shoe?

Ive had the Mambas Bambas and Sambas over the years in fact I bought a pair of the Blue Suede Sambas today. There worn all over the north east of England especially Newcastle there classics the working class choice
In Europe it's also really big in the left wing scene, like you go to a punk show in a squat house, and half the shoes are sambas, the other half vans.
Can't even tell ya how many amazing shoes I had growing up that I wish I kept and restored. Just got some adidas busenitz pro. Kind of a nod to a few classic adidas. And I got the superstar adv the skate version... For 32$!
The only issue is have with my sambas is that they are not that comfortable as it is an old design. As I was trying mine on. Someone looked at them and walked up to ask me were they kept them.
At some point in time, the Samba seamlessly turned into the Adidas version of the German Army Trainer and even featured the same iconic sole from the GAT, still seen with Sambas today. Adidas also makes its own copy of the original GAT, lacking the distinctive Adidas three bars. Sambas were also made with Kangaroo leather which was the most durable but these were eventually outlawed, resulting in using cow or synthetic leader being used today.
Sambas have been massive in the UK since the early eighties. Big part of it was the football casuals. As well as a lot of fashion over here. Check out a book called casuals by Phil Thornton or anything Neal heard has been involved in.
I saw a documentary on HBO about the now defunct NY Cosmos soccer franchise led by Pele ' . When the camera zooms in on him the sambas are prominently featured.
Gr8 content guys ✊👏🌟☝️..Yesterday the samba since the 80’s popular here in the EU by Hippie’s , skaters, bboyz, Rappers. Rockers ETC....Legendary model Sure..But in MY honest opinion if we talk about 3 stripes oldskool kicks: The Campus has the nicest shape 👌
The Samba’s were Dennis Busenitz favorite Adidas shoe to skate before he got his pro model. And that’s why his shoe looks a lot similar 🤣 Great video as always!
It's the exact same strategy as with the Forum. Just as the Samba, those have been around forever and nobody wanted them until now. But unlike the Forum, the Samba isn't for everybody. I know, because I have ones. And I don't even wear them anymore because of how uncomfortable I feel with them. If you want to go for a soccer cleat for the streets, I heavily recommend the Busenitz Pros instead. Way more comfortable and stylish. If there's some shoes that could sure use a boost in popularity, is those.
I was the first person I’ve known who rocked Stan smith’s , I remember I got them when I run out of school went to the mall next to it and got them and damm i lived my Stan smith’s since that was in 2005-7ish
I remember having the Samba Super around 2006 and got to wear it until the toe box rubber strip fell apart.. And now regretting not buying the OG'S last year or 2019 I think..

I had one pair of sambas and they were unbreakable, I swear I had worn them for like 7 seasons straight in indoor soccer and casually on the weekend.
The only issue is have with my sambas is that they are not that comfortable as it is an old design.
As I was trying mine on. Someone looked at them and walked up to ask me were they kept them.
Yea that old tech isn’t gonna hold up very well
They are a classic I have always loved, a timeless classics.
Definitely classic
Well made video guys keep up the great work.
Thank you Job! Appreciate you watching
You might have watch The Casuals on Netflix or Amazon Prime, if not worth a watch
@@edharvey5684 got the dvd mate. Thanks though. Obsessed with the trainers and clothes!
Just purchased samba supers can't wait to rock them, usually a nike air bloke so nice to have something different
I feel like companies like Nike and Adidas orchestrate these resurgences of old styles and we just lap it up.
Forgot the Maite Samba ADV. My wife digs those!
Haha 😂 sorry we skipped it
First shoe I bought with my own money, super close to my heart! Just traded them out for some Puma Super Ligas tho, so we’ll see which is better!
That’s awesome man. Great first sneaker to buy! Good look with the ligas
Rockers ETC....Legendary model Sure..But in MY honest opinion if we talk about 3 stripes oldskool kicks: The Campus has the nicest shape 👌
could you do an episode on the puma suede ?
Yes! Another classic that I loved in the 90s. I probably had ever colour ever released in the suede.
Already did! Peep our older videos man. Literally has the same title “How The Puma Suede Became a Cultural Icon”
The Samba’s were Dennis Busenitz favorite Adidas shoe to skate before he got his pro model. And that’s why his shoe looks a lot similar 🤣
Great video as always!
Dennis is one the the best! Dude skates so fast
I think he designed them like Copa Mundial rather than sambas
@@mimik5856 he skated the Sambas and the Gazelles, even had a colorway

Love your channel mat. Subscribed
Sneakers always come full circle icons never die
Another great sneaker history video!
Thank you Dylan!
I was the first person I’ve known who rocked Stan smith’s , I remember I got them when I run out of school went to the mall next to it and got them and damm i lived my Stan smith’s since that was in 2005-7ish
Would love to see a video on the Puma Super Liga to compare!
just discovered this channel. i really dig it. im more of a punk dude and sambas are my jam. will probably be a lifelong buyer
My dad always rocked samba while I was growing up so did I.
Happy Father’s Day to your pops
@@NachoAverageFinds thanks brother keep dropping more amazing videos like these!
Used to wear them as a kid when i played soccer, i used to wear chucks for basketball too. Now they are fashion shoes in my closet as an adult
playing basketball 🏀 ball in Chuck Taylor’s sounds painful
@@NachoAverageFinds I always found the shoes pretty comfortable. But that’s just me
You should do a video on Saucony's we use to wear them too around 98 & 99
I love my Adidas Busenitz which are basically sambas. I just got a pair of Ianuccis…which are sambas too.
I used these as indoor soccer shoes growing up. They are a great shoe!
I remember having the Samba Super around 2006 and got to wear it until the toe box rubber strip fell apart..
And now regretting not buying the OG'S last year or 2019 I think..
They will be one again soon enough icons always get retros
@@NachoAverageFinds I ended up with the RM/boost version tho
Fantastic reviews🔥
🇧🇧I am from Barbados and I have a brother who, despite only having the basic two feet most humans are born with- d man has a centipede collection of Stan Smiths😂
I am an avid footballer/soccer player and along with Copa Mundial and various slides- Samba is my go to shoe...
However here is the iconic mic drop...
Big hint🇯🇲
Bob Marley 🎤
Global superstar (pardon the Shell Toe allusion)...he too rocked Sambas🤩
A true/proud fan and owner of this sneaker.
Let's go! Samba king!
Still a 1950's shoe. Hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Also the suede doesn't like to get wet. I only wear these shoes in the fall. No vents and no insulation.
