A small note about what Tony said regarding 911 prices increasing at 43:05 - a 911 Carrera S at £65k in 2005 equates to £97k in todays money whereas a 992 Carrera S today lists at £94K. So if anything 911's have gotten cheaper!
As a new 911 owner (it’s a soft one) Targa 4, 991.1, all I can say is it is fantastic and amazing. So far the reaction from friends and strangers is positive! But what a car as the perfect value, looks, sound (NA) and great performance! So thanks guys! Tony is spot on the money and Sam you are brilliant. Keep up the good work.
When I was a kid I had no idea why people were so thrilled about Porsche. It wasn’t until I rented a 981s off of Turo did I understand. 8 months later I joined the cult and had one of my own. There isn’t another car out there that gives you that feeling a Porsche does.
I run a small driving club. Once you're pushing a 911 through the mountains with other exotics - then you'll understand why the 911 is the best. It's not the sexiest BUT for actual driving, really pushing it, nothing else really keeps up.
Not all of us are part of the Porsche cult, and many of us aren’t familiar with the 986 or the 996 variant of whatever. I would really appreciate if you’d drop a picture or an overlay during the video. Would be great to know what you’re actually talking about. I enjoyed the podcast.
kevins718 yes probably, I tried only the new one with 300km range. It was probably one of the first, lower range and without its initial capacity after several years, which is normal. I have an eGolf and it makes around 200-220km in summer and 170-190 in winter, enough for daily driving.
I'm waiting on an E Tron 50. Not a car I would have bought or considered but I got such a good lease deal (less than £300 per month including insurance, tyres, servicing etc.) that I almost had to get one. If it was my only car then I think I couldn't run one but as a daily car with a second car on my drive I'm happy it'll work. Not sure EV is the future though.
I have always been a Porsche fan.. anyone old enough to remember the 1980s advert for the Braun Micron shaver "the shaver designed by perfectionists for perfectionists" ? that cool black 930 Turbo... wow .In the 70s before the internet and before kids would sit and wait for cars to photograph like they do now, I would sit on the Army and Navy roundabout in Chelmsford for hours waiting and hoping to see nice cars especially Porsche. As soon as i could i bought my first 911 a used 964 C4 Coupe followed by a second then a 996 GT3 CS ,then a 997 Turbo Manual and lastly a 964 Anniversary . I never had any problems with my 911s and i hope to get another again soon.My next one will be special.
First time Porsche buyer here bought 911 (992) C2S...always wanted one..but yeah your right once u have driven one you understand..driving position is absolutely perfect 👌
Great Pod cast as always Sam. All Porsche sports cars have a Feel and connection to driving that I don’t know any other Brand can do in a reliable, quality and good looking package? As they say... Porsche, there is no substitute.
Boxster type 987.2 Basalt Black, PASM + DSC V1, PDK, Sport Chrono, PSE, 19" Sport Design alloys in Satin Platinum and Sports Seat Plus. Best car in the world bar none to take to the Peaks and Highlands; not too wide like the modern ones...
HI. i am from Latvia. And we just had a new car sharing service were all cars are EV calls Renault ZOE and the service is actually good, you can take car drive and then left everywhere you want (by the road parking rules) and the ride are cheap 0.23 EUR per minute. in city it is super perfect way to kicking around. cause you can left car in mostly charge parking for free. and if you get zero battery. drive thru road side and left it. My point is that e-car sharing and car sharing in general is future for living in city and driving around.
Well thanks for that! I’m supposed to be doing jobs round the house as demanded by the wife and I’ve ended up getting into trouble as I insisted on watching this til the end!! Seriously though great podcast really enjoyed it and the way you two bounce of each other. Great work. By the way we all know Tony’s right....918 > Laf/P1. Come on! Having owned a few Porsche’s over the years including a GT3. I completely agree they get well under your skin and there is literally nothing out there to compare them with. Keep up the good work. 😊
I just exchanged my 430d GranCoupe for an M140i and a Mini SE. I used to have projects abroad (still not far for a Belgian compared to UK distances) and do an average of 1000kms a week but now I work mainly in Brussels and Gent making commuting possible even with the limited range of the Mini and, when I need to go further, I have the toy. But, I agree with your point that the infrastructure isn't there yet, but it's coming and growing as are charging times and capacity of batteries. For older electric cars, with limited range, I would go for an i3 with range extender, and off course, its still not a highway cruiser. But with most newer cars you should have been able to do your journey in one go ...
918 was the only car that broke the 7 min barrier at the Ring, beat the P1and FLF on the 1/4 mi. It was also the cheapest, least powerful, heaviest and most luxurious ☝️...
AGREE to all of that. If you aren’t as rich as Tony, buy an old boxster for £5k, you won’t lose money, then move up from there once you’ve experienced the Porsche magic
After a couple of years of use as mileage (given your comments / answers re environmental benefit of manufacture of EV vs ICE), the EV becomes significantly more environmentally friendly including eventual disposal etc - running costs will also be significantly lower... Excellent channel however the title/headline of this episode is misleading - was expecting to listen to you talk about Porsche from the beginning......... Such a cute puppy - adorable !👍👍👍
Tesla has the best infrastructure and range for electric vehicles hands down. Especially since the supercharger is the most reliable and expansive. And regarding road trips...20-30mins wait time for fill a car from 5%- 90% charge. And the model 3 has the best range (322 mi)
When I bought my first Porsche Boxster the dealer had a used Boxster in a lurid purple which the previous owner had matched to the colour of her vacuum cleaner. I am sorry to hear from Tony about Audi after service because I now own one
There is a good argument for a base or carrera S, or a T with a stick and little to no options as being the best "car" you can get in the form of a 911. Not the fastest, not the most expensive, not the most luxurious, but just a fun sports car you can use every day and not really have to worry about.
Guys... Don't forget... £31 quid plus the food or whatever else you end up buying for boredom waiting for the charge too! Will be cool for the business that is selling near the Charge points but for us drivers is a bit hard to digest...
Another great episode! I’ve been listening/watching via YT over lockdown on the WFH vibes, hope that’s included in the podcast charts for you as I’m sure there are lots more like me!
Just have to comment before seeing it all. Are you insane Sam? The Taycan a city car😂😂😂😂 I’ve literally just parked up after doing a 3 week road trip 3582km long, averaging 19.1kWh/100km. The Taycan can easily do 280-300miles on one charge. It’s the best car on sale today🥇 Chiron included😂😂
And cost wise per mile, it’s about 1/5th to my previous petrol Insignia 2.0Turbo if you include reduced fares on ferries and tolls. Electricity about 1/3-1/2 per mile vs petrol. And you don’t need to worry about future pending restrictions in city centers. Bus lanes can be used, free parking, 1/8th annual road tax... The list goes on. But I didn’t buy it for being an electric car, but because it was the best Porsche for my needs as 911 was too small, Panamera too BIG and bloated, and didn’t want to ride up in the skies in an SUV.
Good episode but Porsche have not looked after myself after buying 3 cars from Porsche dealer had reoccurring issue with my diamond cut wheels (poss Laquer) on my Cayenne Porsche refused to replace the wheels as just out of warranty. Choked me off buying future models.
I’ve driven many cars, including high end BMW’s, and without doubt, my 987.1 Cayman S is the best car that I have ever driven. It may be regarded as a poor man’s Porsche by some, but it has a true naturally aspirated flat 6. Some say that Porsches are boring; perhaps they just mean that they aren’t ‘dramatic’. I use mine as a daily driver, and yes in normal driving it could be regarded as boring, because it does everything so well. But drop a gear and rev that engine, and the car comes alive. Great show by the way, the first one that I have watched, I look forward to watching more in the future.
The i3 is an awful example of a decent EV. It lacks tremendously in range. Get a Kia e-Niro or a e-Soul, or a Hyundai Kona and you'll get a different experience. An e-soul it's a fantastic electric small car for city with decent range. I'm not even gonna mention any Tesla because that's another price league.
Can someone explain how Porsche's cars numbering system works. It's the only brand I have no idea.... 991, 996, 918 etc etc. I get the dot 2 thing but everything else is over my head Also, what's with a 911 also being a 991?
Tony your car is an older model. Current I3 and I3s will do 150 mile plus on motorways and 200 miles on country roads and will recharge in 40 minutes. Further battery upgrade due November time.
Serious question Tony. How is offering 60k on a 65k advertised car any different to offering 6k on one advertised at 6.5k ? Both are 8% off the asking price
Another great episode chaps. Nice to hear someone finally mention the EV elephant in the room. Love the section on Porsche and quite agree about being part of the Porsche family once you own one. Hope you get another one soon. By the way, Twiggy is great.
Great episode. Yea time last episode drop you behind on the new gt black series. Thanks touch on the ford bronco as a usa viewer I pump 💪 do to ford try out do jeep with this one. But bronco Sport crossover thing looks like a range rover 🤔. Porsche sound is heven with a flat boxster 6 or sound of a Porsche v8. Always keep eye out for a cheap Porsche to add ro my garage like boxser or a 944
Please talk about the new Polestar line up when you next mention electric cars. They’re doing exciting things at the moment and it’s competing with the other top brand stuf. I feel as if they’re a bit underrated already because they originate from Volvo
Ok Sam and Tony, so an EV powered car is only really good if you live with 'private off-street parking' and only travel a max total of 50 miles per day !!! Regards, RichardA.
Ok, this going to be a longer comment. 1. EVs: My current situation is almost perfect for the use of an EV. Living in a city, 3 miles to work, garage. My flat is rented, but I would not mind the time and the drive to a charging spot, if it was fun. Right now I am enjoying my Focus RS every single mile, albeit in traffic in the city. But there is literaly not a single EV in the market that is either to slow (and I mean acceleration and top speed because I live in Germany), to expensive, to ugly or a combination of those three. I do not care about range, if you could have a lot of fun between two charges and enjoy looking back at your car, when you leave it in the parking lot. 2. Porsche: I was spoiled when my Dad owned a 924s back in the days and would not part with it, when he got in financial troubles. So my Toyota was sold and I was alowed to drive the Porsche to university some days of the week. When the local dealer invited my dad to a driving experience, he was not interested and I did go instead. It was the launch of the 968cs. Not knowing what it was I did have a go in it. And boy was it good. No radio, no aircon, but it simply went. Owning a Porsche is still one of my goals, but my salary did not keep up with the Porsche pricing.
About EVs. If every petrol station was mandated to replace pumps with charge points, most problems would be solved. The main change would have to be that most would be required to charge at home in advance of their journey. I wonder if in some not too distance future, roads would be able to keep cars charged as they move? Secondly, and I think this is the more pertinent point; we have millions of people making billions of journeys that are totally unnecessary. I think the pandemic has opened our eyes as to what we can do remotely, via the Internet, from home or an office base (if actually needed) without face to face contact. The "daily commute" and office work for so many people could become a thing of the past. If we start to curb the idea we all have to be at the same place at the same time, we remove a ton of stress from our daily lives and also massively help the environment.
I think BMW do this with pricing so that the car is rarer in the future because it sells enough with the gross profit to keep the accountants happy and makes it idolised more for brand value? You could argue just make it a limited run but there has to be a reason. Hope that makes some sense lol
M240i : Laughs at everything you say. M2 : Laughs at your jokes only. M2 Comp: Laughs at some jokes. M2 CS: Does not laugh at all. Like how 'serious' do you want to be lol
You can get 2 types (well in the UK) a pure ev and a range extender (with a small petrol engine that doesn't power the wheels, just acts as a generator.
Interesting point about EV’s. Personally I think the technology will die out. There are too many compromises with it, particularly range, high cost of manufacture and the fact the battery packs are incredibly difficult to recycle. Plus, the power still comes from big power stations.... they really aren’t a green prospect long-term. It would require MASSIVE investment in infrastructure to enable it too. I honestly believe that Hydrogen Fuel Cell vehicles will overtake them as they really are eco friendly and require virtually no change to infrastructure or the way we use/refuel cars.
Because storing hydrogen safely is a doddle.......and most is produced by burning fossil fuels. For larger vehicles - ships, trains maybe trucks ok but not for private vehicles. Green hydrogen via people like ITM may be a different proposition but it’s still a way off
Robin H it is in liquid form which is how HFC vehicles work. It’s no more dangerous than current liquid fuels. Whilst it’s true that hydrogen is created by burning fossil fuels.... it’s also a byproduct of nearly every song or human activity on earth. It’s literally everywhere and when burnt only produces water. It’s a far far greener prospect than anything else and can be used not only to power vehicles but to power the power stations to produce the electricity to run the plants that build the vehicles. All with very little change to current infrastructure. It’s already been in use for nearly 20 years in places such as California. The only reason we haven’t adopted it is because governments are trying to push BEV vehicles which they have been trying to make work for over 30 years now with very little change in approach.
Lastly, Sam never seems to feature any comments in his podcast or videos, either positive or negative. Let's have some discussion on feedback from listeners to acknowledge that they are actually read ..
I agree with Tony, Porsche have always been very nice but up untill the 991 they were not the CULT that they are. Yes they were really good cars but, as Tony said, they weren't really that reliable, nor as good to drive. To summarise, Porsche were always very good cars but with the 991 and RUclips people understood them better and thats what made them so desirable I think. Great video btw :)
I love the idea of EV's but I would need 4-500 mile range before I considered one as a 'main car' in the household, fine as a back up and as you say around town car etc, but I drive from Southern England to Scotland and I don't really want to extend an already long ass journey! You hit the nail on the head though, the infrastructure is hilariously pathetic, imagine if everyone went out and bought an EV in the UK this year... I'll keep firing up the V8 in the meantime :P
I bow to both of your superior knowledge on Porsche and other cars, but when it comes to electric cars, either of you have very little knowledge of them, £100k to get an electric car with more than 85 mile range may have been true in 2012, but now, there are many cars sub £40k with over 200 miles of range. The new Renault Zoe £20-£30k with 250 mile range is a good car, watch the Fully Charged RUclips channel to be educated on the subject, also having said that, the charging network does need improving, but it’s getting there.
If. Not that I can show a specific source. According to all the scientists at my university of engineering in Sweden an EV is better for the environment if you use power/electricity of what is called "general EU mix". Mixing coal and modern power. This is including the COMPLETE lifecycle with building it. But I agree with Tony on every other point for now on EV.
After 4 years of running an EV as my 2nd car my conclusion is this is the only way it makes sense use it for all your short journeys and be in control of your own charging....running costs are filthy cheap then have a tasty Porsche for more special trips! But as your only car it will frustrate
“Yeah but Paul Wallace is a chav who wears vests” had me rolling, won’t lie
and 2 seconds earlier when Tony mumbles,(talking about Wallace @13:17) "he's a dick!" 😂🤣
As a member of the Porsche cult, I approve this episode.

I'm an American viewer. Love the podcast and STG. My first vehicle was a Bronco - thanks for giving it a shout out - I would love to get the new one!
Tony is a straight up legend of a bloke
Tony must of be gunning his i3 i.e. 80mph+. In my 80k miles in my 94ah i3 I could easily get 110 miles from a journey.
Since owning my 986 Boxster S I've fallen in love with Porsche and what they stand for they're up there with Ferrari ,Lamborghini
A small note about what Tony said regarding 911 prices increasing at 43:05 - a 911 Carrera S at £65k in 2005 equates to £97k in todays money whereas a 992 Carrera S today lists at £94K. So if anything 911's have gotten cheaper!

That particular i3 must have been damaged (very old batteries) because I have tested the i3 and it reaches almost 300 kms of actual use.
So the i3 is disposable
Or it must be the old one with the small battery.

if it says 120mi fully charged, whys it only doing 75/80 miles?
You have to drive like a grandma to get 100+ miles out of them
Great episode as always , on the electric car front Bollocks to them
Another great episode chaps. Nice to hear someone finally mention the EV elephant in the room. Love the section on Porsche and quite agree about being part of the Porsche family once you own one. Hope you get another one soon. By the way, Twiggy is great.
THE TDI is only way to go!!!
Love that dog Sam !!🐶
Great episode. Yea time last episode drop you behind on the new gt black series.
Thanks touch on the ford bronco as a usa viewer I pump 💪 do to ford try out do jeep with this one. But bronco Sport crossover thing looks like a range rover 🤔.
Porsche sound is heven with a flat boxster 6 or sound of a Porsche v8. Always keep eye out for a cheap Porsche to add ro my garage like boxser or a 944
It's not twiggy fault lol. My 66lb staffordsire was the size of a rat a 8 weeks too. Always love seeing you tony.
Hearing the 997 referred to as old Porsche is in flat out strange
Thank you gentlemen, an entertaining BTG episode, Tony really is spot on, and got to ask, how about Twiggy cam 👍
Obesity is going to be a massive issue when we all go electric by the sound of this chat.
Would love to see a holy trinity ep!
Perfect timing, just about to give the dog a bath ha
Sam, you know you want a Bronco.👍😇😎
Tony is right. EVs are no good
M240i : Laughs at everything you say. M2 : Laughs at your jokes only. M2 Comp: Laughs at some jokes. M2 CS: Does not laugh at all. Like how 'serious' do you want to be lol
I thought the i3 is not straight battery? It’s essentially a hybrid in a sense?
Or is this North America only?
@@alwinau Most sold in EU are EV only.
Francisco Sousa Thanks!
Green hydrogen via people like ITM may be a different proposition but it’s still a way off
What interesting points were said? The only truthful points most EV owners can relate to is the charging network.
Tom I said interesting point.... I was referring to the network, or lack of. Can’t see it taking off personally.
@@jameskalas16 yer I think I'll hold off posting at 2 am next time. LoL
seen the new defender the other week. I dont see many farmers rushing out the buy them.
What about the ID3?
Lastly, Sam never seems to feature any comments in his podcast or videos, either positive or negative. Let's have some discussion on feedback from listeners to acknowledge that they are actually read ..
Yes more Porsche talk, lets go! 👏🏼
Did a STG fan buy the 911T?
Lol 918’s batteries are “super heavy” hahah
Last week I did 280 miles in one day and all that was required was one 30 minute stop...... Which was welcomed after hours driving
